AMD to Acquire SeaMicro: Accelerates Disruptive Server Strategy

AMD to Acquire SeaMicro: Accelerates Disruptive Server Strategy

SeaMicro Low-Power, High-Bandwidth Microserver Solutions Set the Stage for AMD’s Disruptive Approach To Lead Fast-Growing Cloud Data Center Market

SUNNYVALE, Calif. —2/29/2012

AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire SeaMicro, a pioneer in energy-efficient, high-bandwidth microservers, for approximately $334 million, of which approximately $281 million will be paid in cash. Through the acquisition of SeaMicro, AMD will be accelerating its strategy to deliver disruptive server technology to its OEM customers serving cloud-centric data centers. With SeaMicro’s fabric technology and system-level design capabilities, AMD will be uniquely positioned to offer industry-leading server building blocks tuned for the fastest-growing workloads such as dynamic web content, social networking, search and video.

AMD’s server technology combined with SeaMicro technology provides customers with a range of processor choices and platforms that can help significantly reduce data center complexity, cost and energy consumption while improving performance.  AMD plans to offer the first AMD Opteron™ processor-based solutions that combine AMD and SeaMicro technology in the second half of 2012.  The company remains firmly committed to its traditional server business, and will continue to focus and invest in this area.

“By acquiring SeaMicro, we are accelerating AMD’s transformation into an agile, disruptive innovator capable of staking a data center leadership position,” said Rory Read, president and CEO, AMD.  “SeaMicro is a pioneer in low-power server technology.  The unmatched combination of AMD’s processing capabilities, SeaMicro’s system and fabric technology, and our ambidextrous technology approach uniquely positions AMD with a compelling, differentiated position to attack the fastest growing segment of the server market.”

SeaMicro technologies offer substantial advantages in large data center and cloud environments.  Cloud data centers are projected to be the fastest growing segment of the server market through 2015, according to IDC1.   Current systems featuring SeaMicro technology typically use one quarter the power and take one sixth the space of traditional servers with the same compute performance, yet deliver up to 12 times the bandwidth per core2.

Foremost among SeaMicro’s innovations is their supercompute fabric, which connects thousands of processor cores, memory, storage and input/output traffic. SeaMicro’s fabric supports multiple processor instruction sets. SeaMicro solutions are currently deployed in multiple sites across the world. AMD will continue to support all current SeaMicro customers while accelerating plans to deliver new platforms that combine AMD and SeaMicro technology and enable AMD’s OEM partners to bring differentiated solutions to market.

“Cloud computing has brought a sea change to the data center--dramatically altering the economics of compute by changing the workload and optimal characteristics of a server,” said Andrew Feldman, SeaMicro CEO, who will become general manager of AMD’s newly created Data Center Server Solutions business. “SeaMicro was founded to dramatically reduce the power consumed by servers, while increasing compute density and bandwidth.  By becoming a part of AMD, we will have access to new markets, resources, technology, and scale that will provide us with the opportunity to work tightly with our OEM partners as we fundamentally change the server market.”

The acquisition does not change AMD’s 2012 financial guidance and the transaction is expected to be accretive to earnings after 2012. AMD will fund the cash portion of the acquisition with existing cash reserves.

AMD Conference Call

AMD will hold a conference call for the financial community at 4:45 p.m. EST today to discuss today’s announcement. AMD will provide a real-time audio broadcast of the teleconference on the Investor Relations page of its Web site at www.AMD.com. The webcast will be available for 10 days after the conference call.

SnapTax app arrives in Canada - file your taxes from your iPhone

Picture This: Filing Taxes on Your iPhone

Intuit’s SnapTax Arrives in Canada; Makes Tax Filing as Simple as Point, Tap, File

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. –  Feb. 29, 2012 – If a picture’s worth a thousand words, a snapshot of your tax return information may be worth much more. The maker of Canada’s No. 1-selling tax software, TurboTax, wants you to file your taxes in a snapshot, using just a T4 slip and an iPhone or iPod touch.
SnapTax, the innovative point-and-shoot tax preparation app from Intuit takes only minutes to prepare and file simple tax returns. Users can finish tax chores in record time, bringing that hoped-for refund much closer to their bank account.
“Nothing comes close to SnapTax. You take a picture, review the forms and file. Just like TurboTax, the calculations are guaranteed accurate,” said Jeff Cates, president of Intuit Canada. “We know Canadians love their iPhones and iPod touches, and know they’re using them for just about everything these days. With SnapTax that now includes getting their maximum tax refund!”
Point, Tap, File. Done.
Filing taxes with SnapTax is as easy as point, tap and file.
  • Point: Download SnapTax from the App Store, and then simply take a picture of your T4 slip; SnapTax does the rest. SnapTax’s state-of-the-art optical character recognition technology automatically populates your tax information into an electronic form using TurboTax software.
  • Tap: After snapping your pic, tap through a few basic questions about your life, so SnapTax can determine whether the government owes you any money through tax credits. As you answer, SnapTax shows a running tally of your progress – showing you exactly how much you’ll get back – or owe.
  • File: Double-check the numbers to make sure they’re accurate and simply tap “File Now” to electronically NETFILE your return in minutes. In a snap, you’re done.

The only thing left is deciding how to spend your refund – or sending a payment.

Security First
Just like TurboTax, SnapTax protects privacy by encrypting transactions with the same Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology used by Canadian banks. And because no tax information is stored on your iPhone or iPod touch, your information is safe and sound if you misplace or lose your device.
Pricing and Availability
Canadians can download and try SnapTax for free on iTunes. After entering information, it costs $9.99 to submit their return through NETFILE.

Microsoft Announces Availability of Windows 8 Consumer Preview
Milestone lets users explore a re-imagined, no-compromises Windows experience.

Download the Windows 8 Consumer Preview

BARCELONA, Spain Feb. 29, 2012 — Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview — the next milestone of the Windows operating system. This latest preview will be made available for download starting today at http://preview.windows.com. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview offers a more robust experience for testing the world’s most popular operating system and is available to the widest range of people yet following the initial release of the Windows 8 Developer Preview late last year. The Developer Preview received more than 3 million downloads.

“With Windows 8, we reimagined the different ways people interact with their PC and how to make everything feel like a natural extension of the device, whether using a Windows 8 tablet, laptop or all-in-one,” said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft. “The Windows 8 Consumer Preview brings a no-compromises approach to using your PC.”

At a Windows 8 Consumer Preview event in Barcelona that was attended by partners from Europe and around the world, the company shared some key new updates in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview:

Broad range of product changes and improvements. Since the Developer Preview in September, designed to preview the programming platform, Windows 8 has progressed across every dimension. From completing the user experience for touch, keyboard and mouse to refining the development platform, the Consumer Preview improves performance, quality and reliability across all subsystems. With the added features, it represents a more complete view of the capabilities of Windows 8.

Windows Store with new apps. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview marks the beta opening of the Windows Store, which is filled with a variety of new Metro style apps from both third-party developers and Microsoft. During the Consumer Preview, these apps are available to try and experience at no cost to users. The Windows Store will offer personalized recommendations, and Windows 8 gives users the ability to take their apps and settings with them across multiple PCs, making it easy to discover and try new apps while offering developers the greatest opportunity of any platform.

Connecting to the cloud across Windows-based PCs and Windows Phone. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview offers seamless integration with the content people care about across their devices. An optional additional sign-on with a Microsoft account provides access to a host of features, including the ability to roam all settings, use cloud storage, communicate with email, calendar and contacts, and connect to a broad range of services. Your connection to the cloud works across your Windows-based PCs and your Windows Phones.

Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 5. The best way to experience the Web on Windows is with Internet Explorer 10. The browser has been re-imagined to create a new experience designed specifically for Windows 8 devices. It provides an edge-to-edge user interface that is all about less browser and more Web. Fast and fluid, Internet Explorer is hardware-accelerated to enable Web performance.

Preview of new hardware capabilities. At the event, Microsoft also showcased Windows 8 running on a wide range of new x86- and ARM-based reference hardware. This hardware will be available to select developers for trial and testing as previously announced.

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview will be available worldwide for download in English, French, German, Japanese and simplified Chinese languages. More information about Windows 8 and how to download the Consumer Preview is available at http://preview.windows.com or http://windowsteamblog.com.

MELBOURNE, Fla., Feb 27, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Harris Corporation HRS +0.83% , an international communications and information technology company, plans to discontinue its Cyber Integrated Solutions operation -- which provided remote cloud hosting -- and sell its related data center facility in Harrisonburg, Virginia. "There is a large and growing market for cyber security and cloud-enabled solutions, and Harris is committed to continuing to be a significant player in this area," said William M. Brown, president and chief executive officer. "These actions allow us to refocus our capital and efforts on the secure, cost-effective communications and IT solutions that our customers are demanding."

The company expects to incur an after-tax charge of $70 million to $80 million during fiscal 2012 as a result of these actions.

Virtualization, cloud computing, mobile technologies, and the emergence
of a new class of Big Data applications have dramatically altered how
organizations create, deliver and manage information. The sudden
openness of information within rapidly expanding IT infrastructures,
application portfolios and cloud environments could expose organizations
to new forms of risk. IT and security teams are hindered from
maintaining direct control over IT resources - at a time when
organizations have near-total reliance on digital assets, and operate

facilitate safe, efficient stewardship of high-value information.

* Governance, Risk, and Compliance Advisory Services are designed to
identify, analyze, manage, and mitigate risks. These services bring
governance and visibility to risk management, providing confidence that
information is secure, compliant with regulations, and meets specific
business requirements.

* Fraud and Identity Management Advisory Services help organizations
cope with the complex, evolving threat landscape. Clients can protect
sensitive information, while allowing trusted identities to freely and
securely interact with online systems in ways that increase efficiency,
improve customer satisfaction, and control costs. Business agility is
balanced with the appropriate levels of security and authentication.

* Mobile Device Security Advisory Services were developed to allow
organizations to extend their current enterprise security policies and
controls to help mitigate the rapidly escalating risks associated with
providing mobile devices access to sensitive data and resources.

The new EMC Security and Risk Management services portfolio extends t
he
security offerings of EMC Consulting and RSA, which are backed by
hundreds of certified security professionals with extensive governance,
risk, compliance, and security management experience. The proven
security track record of EMC and RSA helps enterprises transition from

Cisco Extends Context-Based Security to the World's Most Widely Deployed Firewall for Unprecedented Visibility and Control

Cisco Extends Context-Based Security to the World's Most Widely Deployed Firewall for Unprecedented Visibility and Control

New Innovations in Cisco's Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA), TrustSec and Identity Services Engine (ISE) Allow Enterprises to Say Yes to More Applications, Devices and the Evolving Global Workforce

SAN FRANCISCO – Feb. 28, 2012 – Building upon its established security Cisco SecureX, Cisco is extending the Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance, the world’s most widely deployed firewall platform, with the new Cisco® ASA CX Context-Aware Security solution. This solution moves the ASA platform well beyond the capabilities of existing “next generation” firewalls by providing unprecedented visibility into security threats and highly-customizable application access control. The Cisco ASA CX enables administrators to control which devices and users have access, and which type of access, to network resources and more than 1,000 applications and 75,000 micro-applications.

Additionally, Cisco is updating its midrange firewall appliances to use the Cisco SecureX Framework for a context-aware approach to security. With additions to the Cisco TrustSec® solution and its policy-management platform, Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), Cisco is once again setting the industry benchmark for security.

Today’s business needs have changed the face of network security. Enterprises are being driven to enable more types of users – from employees to contractors and even sometimes their “co-opetition” – with greater access to applications, devices and resources. But these enterprises need to make sure that only the right users get access to specific applications, data and service functionality, while securing the rest. These demands have broken legacy security models, which force IT to choose between enabling greater productivity or greater security.

Cisco’s security offerings turn this “or” to “and” by enabling businesses to accommodate an increasingly mobile workforce while mitigating the inherent risk in “borderless” enterprises. Using fine-grained controls that combine context awareness, identity awareness, policy and threat intelligence, Cisco delivers a unique and powerful combination that will help enterprises accelerate their businesses while delivering the right levels of security for all devices in all segments of their network.

Key Highlights

  • Cisco ASA CX: The next-generation context-aware security solution:
    • Extends the ASA platform by setting the industry bar for having the broadest visibility and most fine-grained control. It identifies more than 1,000 applications, such as Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter and iTunes, which it breaks down into more than 75,000 micro applications. It buckets these micro applications into easy-to-use categories so that firewall administrators can easily allow or deny access to the relevant parts of the application. (E.g., Facebook micro applications are categorized into business, community, education, entertainment, games and so on.) This gives IT more flexibility in allowing users to access greater numbers of applications without completely denying access.
    • Utilizes the power of the Cisco SecureX Framework – a context-aware, network-centric security framework that’s delivered across unified access, edge, branch, data center and cloud segments of an overall network, supported by Cisco’s portfolio of security products and services.
    • Unlike other firewalls, only ASA CX uses SecureX to gain end-to-end network intelligence, aggregating information from the local network using Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility as well as near real-time threat data from the global Cisco Security Intelligence Operation (Cisco SIO), an advanced security infrastructure that provides threat identification, analysis and mitigation to continuously provide the highest level of security for Cisco customers.
    • Empowers administrators to enable devices and applications with high levels of protection and control. Administrators can clearly see the specific type of device, as well as the operating system it’s running, its location and its current security posture.
  • Cisco TrustSec and Cisco Identity Services Engine: Cisco TrustSec 2.1 and ISE 1.1 provide comprehensive visibility via new device sensors that are integrated into the infrastructure to automatically detect and classify all devices attaching to the network. ISE 1.1 also provides real-time directed endpoint scans, based on policy, to gain more relevant insight and accuracy while classifying devices. Together, they provide the industry’s most scalable, reliable and comprehensive view across an entire corporate infrastructure. In addition, TrustSec 2.1 broadens support for Cisco’s innovative Security Group Access (SGA) technology, which provides highly granular control through policy-based enforcement across both wired and wireless infrastructures.
  • Cisco ASA 5500-X Series midrange security appliances: These new high-performance, next generation Cisco ASA appliancesinclude the ASA 5512-X, 5515-X, 5525-X, 5545-X and 5555-X, areoptimized for Internet edge deployment for small-to-large enterprises. Utilizing the Cisco SecureX Framework’s context-aware approach, they deliver multiple security services (without requiring additional hardware modules), multi-gigabit performance, flexible interface options, and redundant power supplies – all in a compact 1RU form-factor. They optionally deliver broad and deep network security through cloud- and software-based integrated security services, backed by threat intelligence through Cisco SIO.
  • Security Certifications: Cisco also updated the security certification programs Cisco CCNA® Security, Cisco CCNP® Security and Cisco Security Specialists which include ASA training and offer professionals job-ready training and skills specific to the best practices of network security administrators, engineers and experts using the latest Cisco equipment, devices and appliances.

Supporting Quotes:

  • Christopher Young, senior vice president of Security and Government Group, Cisco:

“Instead of taking a firewall-only approach, Cisco has taken a context-aware approach where the firewall is a living, breathing and dynamic part of the highly secure network. Cisco is building security into the network, utilizing all of the unique ability of the network to deliver context, intelligence and control. No part of your infrastructure knows more about what's happening in the environment than the network. We are bringing that powerful contextual awareness forward, starting with our firewall.”

  • David Kennedy, vice president, chief security officer, Diebold, Inc.

“Cisco ISE provides a best-in-class access control solution for Diebold, enabling unmatched granularity and insight about our users without additional equipment. As a longtime trusted vendor for Diebold, where security is part of our very culture, Cisco was the right choice to enhance our global security needs. Cisco ISE has given us the power to simplify our enterprise security management and help ensure the integrity of any individual or device entering our network.”

  • Nick Young, network support manager, Four Seasons Healthcare (FSHC)

“With Cisco AnyConnect, ASA, ASA CX and IronPort, we are finally getting to the point of having a joined-up approach where all the components can interact with each other. For FSHC, using Cisco security products has simplified control and given us better visibility, allowing us to be more responsive to the business needs to the point where we stop worrying about what we can allow on our network and concentrate specifically on what we don't want to allow. We are looking forward to the next developments in managing these appliances from a single global console.”

  • Osamu Saito, president, Little eArth Corporation Co., Ltd. (LAC)

“Cisco's next-generation ASA 5500-X is a perfect fit for firewall deployments that require both high-performance and multiple security services running on the firewall concurrently. Cisco ASAs more than meet our requirements of a firewall and IPS running inside one appliance. From a Managed Security Service perspective, we are happy to utilize ASAs for our Japan Security Operation Center, offering the highest level of protection to organizations in Japan.”

  • Chad Spiers, director, voice and data infrastructure services, Sentara Healthcare

“In Sentara Healthcare’s quest to best serve the needs of our patients, Cisco ISE met our high-water mark to strengthen our security posture, improve operational efficiency and maintain HIPAA compliance with flying colors. The use of 802.1x ensures dynamic, authorized user access, enabling us to segment and segregate clinical from consumer data and hundreds of devices, many of which are FDA regulated or vendor controlled.”

  • Rick Dastin, president, Enterprise Business Group, Xerox Corporation

Cisco and Xerox are evolving the TrustSec solution to respond to the explosion of personal devices in the workplace. To protect confidential information, companies need to secure network endpoints – such as printers, tablets, webcams – and deploy security policies faster than ever before. By allowing IT managers to automatically identify, monitor and manage all devices from a central location, TrustSec helps ensure the network path to and from these devices is secure.”

Survey Says 51 Percent of Organizations Lose Data Through Mobile Devices, 59 Percent of Employees Dodge Security Controls

Mobile devices help business, but security is needed to prevent costly data loss

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- RSA CONFERENCE -- BOOTH # 1332 -- A new "Global Study on Mobility Risks" reveals that corporate mobile devices and the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) phenomenon are rapidly circumventing enterprise security and policies. Seventy-seven percent of more than 4,000 respondents in 12 countries agree that the use of mobile devices in the workplace is important to achieving business objectives. But 76 percent also believe that these devices put their organizations at risk—and only 39 percent have the necessary security controls to address the risk.

"IT has spent years working on desktop security and trying to prevent data loss over web and email channels—but mobile devices are radically changing the game," said Tom Clare, senior director of Product Marketing Management. "Tablets and iOS devices are replacing corporate laptops as employees bring-their-own-devices to work and access corporate information. These devices open the door to unprecedented loss of sensitive data. IT needs to be concerned about the data that mobile devices access and not the device itself."

According to a previous Ponemon Institute survey, IT respondents said 63 percent of breaches occurred as a result of mobile devices. And only 28 percent said employee desktop computers were the cause.(i)

Today's research, conducted by the Ponemon Institute© and sponsored by content security provider Websense, Inc.® (NASDAQ: WBSN), is designed to help IT security professionals plan for an increasingly mobile workforce. The research shows that organizations often don't know how and what data is leaving their networks through non-secure mobile devices. Traditional static security solutions such as antivirus (AV), firewalls, and passwords are not effective at stopping advanced malware and data theft threats from malicious or negligent insiders.

To safely permit corporate use of mobile devices, Websense today released its new Websense TRITON Mobile Security solution. It combines four key components (web security, data security, mobile malware and app protection, and vital mobile device management features) into one solution. As a cloud security service, available anytime anywhere, it prevents confidential data loss on iPads, iPhones, Android, and other mobile devices.

More than 4,600 IT and IT security practitioners in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Mexico, Singapore, United Kingdom, and the United States were surveyed. With an average of 10 years' experience in the field, fifty-four percent are supervisors (or above) and 42 percent are from organizations with more than 5,000 employees. This survey defines mobile devices as laptops, USB drives, smartphones, and tablets.

Key findings

  • Fifty-nine percent of respondents report that employees circumvent or disengage security features, such as passwords and key locks, on corporate and personal mobile devices.
  • During the past 12 months, 51 percent of the organizations in this study experienced data loss resulting from employee use of insecure mobile devices, including laptops, smartphones, USB devices, and tablets.
  • Seventy-seven percent of respondents agree that the use of mobile devices in the workplace is important to achieving business objectives. A similar percentage (76 percent) believes that these tools put their organizations at risk. Only 39 percent have the necessary security controls to address the risk, and only 45 percent have enforceable policies.
  • Insecure mobile devices increase rates of malware infections. Fifty-nine percent of respondents say that over the past 12 months, their organizations experienced an increase in malware infections as a result of insecure mobile devices in the workplace, with another 25 percent unsure.
  • Sixty-five percent of respondents are most concerned with employees taking photos or videos in the workplace -- probably due to fears about the theft or exposure of confidential information. Other unacceptable uses include downloading and using internet apps (44 percent) and using personal email accounts (43 percent). Forty-two percent say that downloading confidential data onto devices (USB or Bluetooth) is not acceptable in their organizations.

Websense cloud security services protect remote users anytime and anywhere, including mobile devices and laptops. Endpoint protection on the laptop includes data encryption with portal decryption for USB drives to securely share information between users.

Quotes

"This survey shows that organizations need a safe way to manage their mobile devices," said Tom Clare, senior director of Product Marketing Management. "Websense saw that need and developed our new Websense TRITON Mobile Security solution. We think we are the only vendor that addresses the security gaps detailed in the survey. We take mobile security to the next level by combining device management (MDM) with real-time protection from data loss, dynamic web threats, mobile malware, and malicious mobile apps."

"We asked thousands of IT security professionals and mobile devices were overwhelmingly important to business objectives," said Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute. "However, mobile devices put organizations at risk—risks that they do not have the necessary security controls and enforceable policies to address. It's also clear that employees are deliberately disabling security controls, which is a serious concern."

COS offers a higher level of managed services by serving as a client's communications arm, integrating directly with their IT processes and managing their overall communications functions (such as production, billing, operations and more).

Avaya Communications Outsourcing Solutions are custom-managed services typically designed for two types of businesses: Those who are ready to migrate their aging infrastructure and transform it with advanced capabilities, but may have constraints around internal resources or budget; and those who are not ready for a technology transformation, but want to improve the cost-efficiency and performance of their existing infrastructure.

These services solve customer issues in four key areas—performance, resources, tools and cost. Avaya Communications Outsourcing Solutions includes:
  • Seamless worldwide multi-vendor support using nine global Network Operation Centers (NOC) supporting 3 million communications ports under contract(1).
  • Extensive communications applications expertise and support, driven by an organization of more than 700 dedicated voice managed services experts.

  • A breakthrough communications management platform, Matrix—the result of a $15 million+ investment in a predictive, preventive cloud-based platform. This includes a customized Web portal to let supervisors get a clear view into Avaya services.
  • Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) improvements can be delivered by COS. Typically, 15 to 20 percent in TCO improvements are driven by Avaya Managed Services through improved performance and reduced investment needs(2).
