Gartner Says Worldwide Business Intelligence Software Revenue to Grow 7 Percent in 2013

Gartner Says Worldwide Business Intelligence Software Revenue to Grow 7 Percent in 2013

Analysts to Discuss Business Intelligence Trends at Gartner Business Intelligence and Analytics Summit 2013 February 25-26 in Sydney and March 18-20 in Grapevine, Texas

February 19, 2013

Worldwide business intelligence (BI) software revenue will reach $13.8 billion in 2013, a 7 percent increase from 2012, according to Gartner, Inc. The market is forecast to reach $17.1 billion by 2016.

"BI and analytics have grown to become the fourth-largest application software segment as end users continue to prioritize BI and information-centric projects and spending to improve decision making and analysis," said Dan Sommer, principal research analyst at Gartner. "As more and more information is generated, business models need reinvention, and it's increasingly clear that mastering analytics on big data will be a key driver for the next economic cycle."

CIO appetite for BI is complemented by more-tactical buying in business units for departmental and workgroup analysis, as well as for personal BI, enabled by the Nexus of Forces (cloud, mobile, social and information). These are fundamental drivers. However, in the near term, growth will be hampered by sluggish macro indicators, as well as by slowing sales cycles of multimillion-dollar end-to-end BI deals. Compared with 2011 growth of 16 percent, 2013 and the coming years are expected to be slower, with growth in the high single digits.

"Although this is a mature market and has been a top CIO priority for years, there is still a lot of unmet demand. Every company has numerous subject areas — such as HR, marketing, social and so on — that have yet to even start with BI and analytics," said Kurt Schlegel, research vice president at Gartner. "The descriptive analytics have largely been completed for most large companies in traditional subject areas, such as finance and sales, but there is still a lot of growth expected for diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive deployments. Since many midsize enterprises have yet to even start their BI and analytic initiatives, we expect the market for BI and analytics platforms will remain one of the fastest-growing software markets."

The emerging data-as-a-service trend could significantly grow the market for BI and analytics platforms. Today, the business model is largely "build" driven in that organizations license software capabilities to build analytic applications. However, organizations increasingly will subscribe to industry-specific data services that bundle a narrow set of data with BI and analytic capabilities embedded. In time, most companies, regardless of their business model, will need to provide a data-as-a-service offering. Therefore, this trend has the potential to grow the market significantly as a range of vendors look to embed a BI and analytic platform provider's software capabilities into their data-as-a-service offerings.

More detailed analysis is available in the reports "Forecast Analysis: Enterprise Application Software, Worldwide, 2011-2016, 4Q12 Update" and “Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence andAnalytics Platforms”. The reports are available on Gartner's website at http://www.gartner.com/resId=2323315 andhttp://www.gartner.com/resId=2326815, respectively.

Additional information and analysis on the BI software market will be discussed at the Gartner Business Intelligence Summits 2013 taking place February 25-26 in Sydney and March 18-20 in Grapevine, Texas. The Gartner BI Summit is specifically designed to drive organizations toward analytics excellence by exploring the latest trends in BI and analytics and examining how the two disciplines relate to one another. Gartner analysts will discuss how the Nexus of Forces will impact BI and analytics, and share best practices for developing and managing successful mobile BI, analytics and master data management initiatives.

HP Extends Converged Infrastructure Leadership

Press Release: February 19, 2013

HP Extends Converged Infrastructure Leadership

New offerings extend HP’s commitment to open, heterogeneous and efficient solutions

LAS VEGAS — HP today announced new innovations that strengthen its HP Converged Infrastructure portfolio.

At its yearly Global Partner Conference in Las Vegas, HP unveiled a new HP BladeSystem, HP Converged Storage and HP Networking solutions, as well as HP Services that accelerate return on IT investment and enable customers to refocus resources from operations to innovation.

Significant shifts in the IT industry, including cloud, big data, social media and mobility, have added new challenges for chief information officers (CIOs) in meeting customer, partner and employee expectations while aligning IT and enterprise goals with limited funding.

The HP Converged Infrastructure portfolio addresses these growing challenges and leads the industry in deploying and managing large-scale infrastructures. HP has delivered more than 8 million virtual connect ports, issued more than 7 million HP Insight Management licenses, shipped more than 40 petabytes of bladed storage and 50 million switch ports, and grown to nearly 900 HP CloudSystem customers.(1) In addition, HP has led the industry in blade server revenue and shipments for 24 consecutive quarters.(2)

Only HP Converged Infrastructure offers customers:

  • An open, standards-based, heterogeneous approach that integrates servers, storage, networking and management software.
  • Proven experience of implementing Converged Infrastructure solutions for customers around the world—as well as close collaboration with 4,500 HP AllianceOne members and partners who develop complete solutions built on HP Converged Infrastructure.
  • Comprehensive consulting and support services by HP and certified partners that simplify IT management, improve return on investment (ROI) by optimizing IT investments, and ensure a high-quality customer experience.

“HP pioneered the concept of a converged infrastructure, and we were the first to deliver it,” said David Donatelli, executive vice president and general manager, Enterprise Group, HP. “But we’re not resting on our achievements, we continue to innovate and extend the HP Converged Infrastructure portfolio to deliver the benefits that our business and government customers expect from us.”

New HP BladeSystem delivers breakthrough data center economics

Virtualization offers significant benefits to organizations. According to Gartner, in 2016, 82 percent of server workloads will be running in virtual environments,(3) which could increase management complexity and operational costs.

The new HP BladeSystem c7000 Platinum enclosure, a key solution within the industry-leading HP ProLiant portfolio, dramatically improves performance, efficiency and availability of resources in virtualized and cloud environments. As a result, organizations can save up to 68 percent in data center operating costs.(4) These groundbreaking data center economics are delivered through next-generation technologies that provide long-term investment protection and can scale to support growth.

The HP BladeSystem c7000 Platinum enclosure with the new SX1018 HP Ethernet switch, which provides the lowest port-to-port latency of any blade switch, is more than four times faster than previous switches.(5,6) HP also is the first in the industry to provide 40GB downlinks to each blade server for near-real time performance. This provides the ideal network interface for high-performance clusters or financial services applications.

HP also introduced the new HP ProLiant WS460c Generation 8 (Gen8) Server Blade, the only bladed infrastructure that supports virtualized client solutions with high-density 3-D graphics and eight GPUs per blade server. Supporting four times more users per host blade, the HP WS460c lowers costs by up to 60 percent per user compared to previous generations, to mobilize an entire workforce.(7,8)

HP innovations accelerate move to modern storage architecture

Unpredictable data growth and workload performance demands are forcing customers to upgrade legacy storage architectures. This transition—from legacy to modern, scale-out storage architectures—represents a multibillion dollar opportunity for channel partners.

HP StoreVirtual Storage offers pioneering software-defined storage that is delivered either as virtual storage appliance (VSA) software or as a converged storage appliance (CSA) on HP ProLiant hardware. HP has been shipping VSAs for more than seven years and has distributed more than 150,000 VSAs worldwide.

To capitalize on and accelerate the adoption of software-defined storage, HP announced two new HP StoreVirtual Storage systems, based on HP ProLiant Gen8 technologies. Improving both productivity and efficiency for businesses deploying virtualization, HP StoreVirtual Storage systems deliver nearly double the performance and capacity density compared to previous models.

In addition, the new HP StoreSystem, a channel-only midrange storage solution, combines HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage and HP StoreOnce Backup systems that are preracked for rapid deployment. Offering primary block-and-file storage with information protection in a single system, HP StoreSystem now includes all HP 3PAR platform and VMware software suites to maximize customer efficiency and agility.

HP Technology Services simplify, integrate, automate a Converged Infrastructure

With HP Technology Services, customers can simplify, integrate and automate their IT environments to rapidly respond to organizational change and accelerate time to revenue.

HP Technology Services is now offering the HP Proactive Insight experience, which enables customers to take proactive actions as well as automate and manage tasks, resulting in problem prevention and productivity gains averaging $32,000 per 100 users.(9)

The HP Proactive Insight experience begins with HP Proactive Care, which provides proactive problem avoidance and direct access to advanced technical expertise. This service is powered by innovative support and management technologies, including HP Insight Online, the industry’s most comprehensive cloud-based management portal; and HP Insight Remote Support, which remotely monitors servers, storage and networks. With the HP Proactive Insight experience, customers can increase user productivity and achieve a return on their services investment in 30 days or less.(9)

HP innovations deliver the industry’s only complete BYOD networking solution

By 2016, two-thirds of the workforce will own smartphones, and 40 percent of the workforce will be mobile.(10) Yet, today’s legacy infrastructure requires two separate networks to support wired and wireless connectivity, resulting in operational complexity and security challenges.

HP also launched the industry’s only complete solution that supports growing bring-your-own-device (BYOD) initiatives. This solution delivers unified wired and wireless management as well as switching platforms that create a single network for wired and wireless connectivity.

HP networking innovations also include device on-boarding and provisioning functionalities through a single management application, automated security with software-defined networks (SDN) technology, and mobility connectivity services that further extend the customer benefits of the HP FlexNetwork architecture.

To double network scalability over legacy infrastructure, the new OpenFlow-enabled HP 2920 Switch Series speeds data transfer by up to 45 percent, while increasing performance by up to 100 percent.(11) In addition, the new HP 830 Unified/WLAN Switch eliminates the need to purchase up to 50 percent of traditional network access devices, including separate switches and controllers, while supporting up to 1,000 wireless devices.(12)

To help customers create an optimized, scalable wired and wireless infrastructure, HP is offering HP FlexNetwork Design and Validation and HP Wireless LAN Lifecycle Services. These services provide validated and interoperable high-level designs and device configurations based on proven HP FlexNetwork reference architectures.

HP’s premier America’s client event, HP Discover, takes place June 11-13 in Las Vegas.

Cisco Opens Up New Business Opportunities for Service Providers With Major Mobile Internet Innovations

Cisco Opens Up New Business Opportunities for Service Providers With Major Mobile Internet Innovations

New Cisco Software Suite, Small Cell Innovations, and Network Infrastructure Help Service Providers to Monetize Data in Motion, Benefit From 'Internet of Everything'

SAN JOSE, CA--(Feb 19, 2013) - With the mobile Internet predicted to grow 13-fold between 2012 and 2017 with the addition of billions of connections between people, devices and objects, Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) today introduced a range of major innovations to enable service providers to more effectively monetize those connections. The new Cisco technologies enable service providers to deliver new, better and more personalized connected experiences and to gain more intelligence about those networked connections that they can utilize to deliver new revenue-generating services.

Many of the new business opportunities presented by the growing connectivity of people, data, processes, information and devices (the 'Internet of Everything') center on analyzing and monetizing "data in motion." Data in motion consists of real-time and near real-time data generated by mobile and fixed connections between people, things and processes. According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast, by 2017 there will be more than 10 billion mobile-ready devices/connections -- including 8.6 billion personal mobile devices and 1.7 billion machine-to-machine connections

To help ensure service providers accommodate exploding network traffic and profit from it, Cisco is aggressively delivering innovative mobile solutions in three key areas: software, access and infrastructure.

Intelligent Software via Cisco Quantum

To better enable service providers to analyze and monetize the data in motion in their networks, Cisco is today introducing the Cisco® Quantum™. The result of the integration of more than $1.5 billion in recent acquisitions with in-house innovation, Cisco Quantum delivers unparalleled mobile network intelligence to service providers and enables greater network programmability, a key building block for the delivering of new network services. The suite includes:

- Cisco Quantum Network Abstraction Suite: provides a real-time network abstraction layer for network data collection, aggregation and orchestration to augment available information in all network decision processes.

- Cisco Quantum Policy Suite: offers a next-generation policy management solution that enables service providers to scale, control, monetize and personalize any service on any type of network through a flexible, interactive architecture that supports application-centric policy capabilities.

- Cisco Quantum Analytics Suite: provides business and network analytics capabilities that enable both historical and real-time predictive policy decisions. It includes dashboards for data visualization and programmable interfaces to create system alerts in conjunction with policy.

- Cisco Quantum Wide Area Network (WAN) Orchestration Suite: provides network management tools to simplify capacity and traffic management, increase network efficiency, and reduce operational costs for service providers, particularly in IP/MPLS (Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching) environments.

Global service providers, including Vodafone Netherlands, are recognizing the importance of using an intelligent network to deliver new experiences and expand revenue opportunities.

Intelligent Access

To provide improved coverage and capacity to the mobile network architecture, Cisco is also transforming small cells into a platform for business and service innovation, with new small-cell licensed radio technology. Cisco's market leadership in the small-cell market sets the stage for success in the licensed radio market. Innovations include:

- Cisco 3G Small Cell Module for Cisco Aironet® Access Points is Wi-Fi compatible and integrates licensed and unlicensed small cells with a plug-in 3G radio for ease of deployment.

- Cisco 3G Small Cell expands Cisco's proven solution for enterprises with an unsurpassed channel to market for premises-based deployments.

- Cisco ASR 901S is designed to enable wide-scale deployment of outdoor small cells by extending carrier-class small-cell routing to the outdoor installation pole to break the backhaul bottleneck.

Softbank, a Japanese telecommunications and Internet services providers; WiLine Networks, a provider of fast, flexible, affordable broadband solutions; and Telkom, a wireline and wireless telecommunications provider in South Africa, have joined more than 100 global service providers selecting Cisco as their infrastructure partner for wireless carrier backhaul and licensed data backhaul services.

"Softbank's customers have come to expect instantly available mobile broadband wherever they happen to be, on whichever device they happen to choose," said Keiichi Makizono, Corporate Officer, Deputy Unit Head, Technology Unit, and Division Head, Network Division, SoftBank Mobile Corp. "We use Cisco today for backhaul, including the Cisco ASR 903 for Internet Protocol radio access network. The new Cisco small-cell backhaul technology will potentially help enable us to expand our service portfolio so that we can provide customers with anytime, anywhere access on any network."

"With the accelerated growth of mobile networks, speed and flexibility are hallmarks of successful next-generation backhaul providers," said John McGuire, CEO, WiLine Networks. "WiLine Networks chose Cisco and the Cisco ASR 901 Series, which provides unequaled flexibility to both address immediate demands and the expected growth of backhaul driven by the advance of small cells. Our relationship with Cisco is a win for our customers, speeding time to deploy Ethernet services with best-in-class network solutions."

"With the rapid growth in the number and sophistication of mobile devices, mobile networks are challenged to provide adequate capacity and performance," said Zoltan Miklos, executive, Telkom South Africa. "Telkom South Africa prides itself on delivering the highest quality and reliability to our customers. With that in mind that we are implementing the Cisco ASR 900 Series of routers for cellular backhaul and mobile aggregation requirements today, and look forward to utilizing the next generation in small cell backhaul."

Intelligent Infrastructure

To provide the ability to handle the many connections required in the Internet of Everything, Cisco's market-leading Cisco ASR 5000 Series evolved packet core sits at the heart of the market transition to 4G technology. With more than 210 deployments by global service providers, the Cisco ASR 5000 Series provides the elasticity necessary to meet the dynamic and ever-evolving demands of the mobile Internet.

Toronto-based Neighbourhood Buzz and Vertica Resident Services Launch Mobile Websites

Neighbourhood Buzz and Vertica Resident Services Launch Mobile Websites

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 15, 2013) - In response to the rapid rise of mobile usage in Canada, Neighbourhood Buzz has launched an industry-leading mobile website product that features GPS technology for apartment hunters. Vertica Resident Services has partnered with Neighbourhood Buzz to launch this white labeled, mobile-optimized site for their national residential apartment portfolio. Now, when a prospect visits Vertica's corporate website or any of their other individual property specific websites, from any mobile device, they will instantly be redirected to the mobile site. The mobile experience for the websites strives to replicate the user experience from a computer with the goal being to further enhance an apartment hunter's search on the go.

"Mobile usage already accounts for 11% of our website traffic, and we only expect it to rise in the future." said Laura Holland, Vice President of Vertica Resident Services. "The user experience has always been important to us for any marketing initiatives we undertake. Now with our mobile optimized websites, prospects on the go will be able to quickly find the perfect Vertica apartment home closest to them and easily contact our leasing consultants."

The mobile websites employ user location data to map out a property management company's nearby apartments, as well as generating a route from the user's current location to the apartment building. Other features include mobile-optimized design, 'One-click' call and email functionality, local amenities mapping, standard rental rates, easy browsing and downloading of suite pictures, floorplans and application details.

"Today's renters rely heavily on the internet to do research before walking into a building. They form opinions before you've even talked to them. It's kind of scary," says Steve Ballantyne, Co-founder of Neighbourhood Buzz. "We are giving the growing number of mobile users a premier first impression of Vertica buildings. A simple user experience will have people across mobile platforms calling, emailing, and visiting Vertica's buildings quickly and easily."

State of Texas to Improve Communication and Collaboration by Adopting Office 365 for More Than 100,000 State Employees

State of Texas to Improve Communication and Collaboration by Adopting Office 365 for More Than 100,000 State Employees
Feb. 15, 2013
Cloud-based productivity service to help state meet CJIS security and HIPAA privacy requirements.

REDMOND, Wash. — Feb. 15, 2013 — The Texas Department of Information Resources is moving to the cloud with Microsoft Office 365 as part of a statewide IT modernization strategy. Office 365, an always-up-to-date cloud productivity service, will streamline and improve the state’s communication and collaboration capabilities for more than 100,000 employees, making it the largest statewide deployment of email and collaboration services in the U.S. Office 365 has already been deployed across multiple state agencies, including the Health and Human Services System, Department of Transportation, Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Information Resources, and Department of Insurance, with the Department of Criminal Justice and Alcoholic Beverage Commission coming on board soon. The move to Office 365 offers the state significant savings in IT spending because of greater efficiencies and increased capacity.

“No other solution provides the rich capabilities of Office 365, including webconferencing, real-time collaboration, and document and calendar sharing,” said Todd Kimbriel, director of E-Government for the Texas Department of Information Resources. “Office 365 will increase efficiency and help our agencies better serve the needs of citizens without compromising on security or privacy.”

Compliance was an important factor in the state’s selection of Office 365. Several agencies, including Texas’ Department of Criminal Justice, Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Department of Insurance, and Health and Human Services System, require access to data that is subject to complex security and privacy regulations.

Texas Department of Information Resources and Microsoft Corp. worked together to support the state’s requirements under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS), in order to maintain the state’s compliance posture and high standards for security and privacy. Microsoft has made a contractual commitment to the Texas Department of Information Resources by signing the CJIS Addendum in addition to a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement. As a result of this partnership, jurisdictions at all levels within the State of Texas, including cities and counties, will be able to take advantage of Office 365.

“Microsoft has been a long-standing strategic partner with a commitment to understanding and addressing the unique requirements law enforcement and health care practitioners must meet,” said Karen Robinson, Department of Information Resources executive director and State of Texas chief information officer. “The enterprise-class capabilities of Office 365 and Microsoft’s proven track record gave us the confidence we needed to move to the cloud.”

“We’ve worked hard to provide security and privacy solutions the State of Texas can trust,” said Michael Donlan, vice president for Microsoft’s State and Local Government business. “The familiarity of Office backed by deep investments in cloud security, privacy and compliance play an important role in how Microsoft is enabling city, state and federal agencies to move to the cloud.”

HP Helps Clients Transform Finance and Accounting Processes with New BPO Solution

Press Release: 02/14/2013

HP Helps Clients Transform Finance and Accounting Processes with New BPO Solution

PALO ALTO, Calif. — HP Enterprise Services today announced a new business process outsourcing (BPO) solution, HP AutoFlow, that enables clients to automate core business processes, including finance and accounting, to enhance operational agility.

As business functions become more complex, organizations struggle to maximize efficiencies while maintaining quality and process transparency. At the same time, these complexities often prompt organizations to perform inefficient, time-consuming manual workarounds when responding to and solving issues. Yet, while enterprises are constantly looking for ways to cut costs, they are also aiming to increase the return on investment (ROI) of their enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

HP AutoFlow integrates with any ERP platform and is designed to provide a scalable, unified solution that automates and streamlines finance and accounting processes. Utilizing a leveraged, private cloud infrastructure, the solution offers out-of-the-box functionality. HP AutoFlow can be rapidly deployed to support client efforts to:

  • Reduce the need for manual intervention and shift valuable resources to more strategic projects by increasing automation through improved integration with ERPs and legacy systems.
  • Support enablement of e-invoicing to achieve better invoice accuracy and improve on-time payment performance.
  • Drive process transformation via process-modeling capabilities.
  • Realize improved cost and additional savings by accelerating processing time for accounts payable, thereby increasing opportunities for early payment discounts.

“Today’s chief financial officers are plagued with diminishing resources and the growing complexity of processes and technology,” said Danila Meirlaen, vice president, Business Process Outsourcing, HP Enterprise Services. “HP AutoFlow builds on our strong history in finance, administration and technology to increase process automation and optimize cost structures, so clients can focus on revenue-generating activities.”

HP AutoFlow combines HP’s deep BPO experience with the Omniflow workflow solution from leading business process management and enterprise content management provider Newgen Software Technologies. Hosted in a leveraged cloud environment, HP AutoFlow fully integrates with HP Document Processing Services and the HP invoice automation program to enable electronic receipt, document scanning, data capture and document repository services while allowing easy integration into clients’ back office systems.

In addition to finance and administration, HP AutoFlow can be used in other business processes such as human resources, procurement, supply chain, master data management, dispute management and financial services.

Pricing and availability

HP AutoFlow is available immediately worldwide; pricing varies according to client needs and environment.

HP’s premier Americas client event, HP Discover, takes place June 11-13 in Las Vegas.
