Pacific Northwest Utility Company chooses TITUS Information Security Solutions for Data Governance and NERC Compliance

January 17, 2012 (Ottawa, Ontario) – A Pacific Northwest utility company has recently chosen TITUS classification products  to secure their sensitive information, allowing them to comply with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards.  The organization is using TITUS Message Classification, TITUS Classification for Microsoft Office, and TITUS Classification for Desktop to identify, classify and protect unstructured data to meet NERC data governance and compliance requirements.

NERC is the organization responsible for the reliability and security of the bulk power system in North America. NERC reliability standards define the requirements for planning and operating the North American bulk power system. They have created a set of Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards that ensure the information and computer systems security for any entity that generates, distributes or transmits power across the grid.

TITUS data security, governance and compliance solutions enable energy and utility organizations to adhere to NERC standards by:

·         addressing many core information security requirements for NERC standards. By having end users identify and classify sensitive information, organizations can ensure compliance to the classification requirements of the NERC standards.

·         generating log files from classification actions. This allows organizations to assess adherence levels and identify possible deficiencies in their information protection program, as outlined in the NERC standards.

·         automatically embedding metadata into every email, document and file. This allows organizations to enhance downstream solutions, such as data loss prevention and archiving systems, in order to retain information based on their classification level in accordance to the NERC standards.

The following TITUS data security, governance and compliance products were selected by this utility company, and can be used by other utility companies throughout North America, to identify and classify unstructured data and comply with NERC requirements:

·         TITUS Message Classification - classifies, labels, and protectively marks email in Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Web Access, and mobile devices. This allows organizations to comply by ensuring every email is classified and protectively marked before being sent.

·         TITUS Classification for Microsoft Office - classifies, labels, and protectively marks documents in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This allows organizations to comply by ensuring every document is classified and protectively marked before being saved or printed.

·         TITUS Classification for Desktop - classifies any file type in Windows Explorer, including Adobe PDF, multimedia files, and CAD documents.

Roam Mobility Launches Service today to Eliminate High Roaming Rates for Canadians Travelling into USA

Roam Mobility Launches Service today to Eliminate High Roaming Rates for Canadians Travelling into USA

MONTREAL, Jan. 17, 2012 /CNW/ - Canadian telecom company Roam Mobility, today launched a service that eliminates voice and data roaming charges for Canadians travelling into the United States. The mobile virtual network operator partnered with T-Mobile USA Inc. to deliver the first US network exclusively for Canadians travelling into the US.

"Canadians are tired of paying the highest roaming charges in the world and we're about to change that," said Emir Aboulhosn, CEO of Roam Mobility. "Canadians can now use their phones, smartphones, tablets and laptops in the same way they would at home, the second they enter the US".

It's estimated 18 million Canadians cross the US border each year. With few options, most Canadians purchase roaming packages from their existing service providers for a hefty fee. This results in $450 M being spent in US roaming annually. Roam Mobility is boasting price reductions of up to 99% for Canadians, in a move intended to inject transparency in the industry.

"We are able to offer fair and transparent pricing because we are the first mobile virtual network operator to directly broker a deal with a tier 1 telecom company over an international border," said Aboulhosn. "Canadians have been waiting for a socially-responsible cellphone service like this for a very long time."

Roam Mobility's network is a nationwide US network covering more than 200 M people and offering blazing speeds with HSPA+ 42 technology. All Roam's plans are pre-paid and available in increments ranging from one to 30 days. All talk and text plans are unlimited, and include calls and text messages to the US and Canada starting at $2 per day. Data plans are available in 500 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB and 5 GB increments, with rates as low as two cents per megabyte. For more information visit: www.roammobility.com

About Roam Mobility
We aim to be the trusted first choice for people looking to stay connected while travelling abroad. Whether it's friends, family or the office, Roam Mobility keeps Canadians connected to what's important by bringing mobility within affordable reach of everyone.

We are Roam. Mobility for the traveller.

Canada among top five countries with the highest number of finalists in global YouTube Space Lab competition

YouTube Space Lab Announces 60 Finalists in Global Competition to Send
Students’ Experiments into Space

Thousands of entries from more than 80 countries: Canada among top five
countries with the highest number of finalists

Toronto, Ontario - January 17, 2012 - YouTube, Lenovo and Space
Adventures, in cooperation with world space agencies including the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space
Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), today
announced the 60 finalists of YouTube Space Lab (youtube.com/spacelab),
the global science competition that challenges 14-18 year-olds to design
a science experiment that can be performed in space. YouTube Space Lab
received thousands of video submissions from more than 80 countries, a
remarkable number given the unique challenge of designing an experiment
that could realistically be carried out in space - something that has
traditionally been the mission of qualified astronauts and scientists.
Entrants not only described their science experiment ideas via video,
but demonstrated and animated the procedures they were submitting.

The U.S. led with 10 finalists, followed by India with nine. Rounding
out the top five countries in terms of total submissions are Poland,
Canada, and Spain. A complete list of finalists is below.

Starting today through January 24, the YouTube community will be
invited to vote on these entries alongside a prestigious panel of judges
to determine the winners. Judges include Canadian Space Agency astronaut
Chris Hadfield, Cirque du Soleil’s founder Guy Laliberté, renowned
scientist Professor Stephen Hawking, NASA’s Associate Administrator
for Human Exploration and Operations William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s
Associate Administrator of Education and former astronaut Leland Melvin,
ESA Astronaut Frank De Winne, and JAXA Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide.
YouTube users and the judging panel will determine six regional winners
(two teams from each of the three regions) who will travel to
Washington, D.C., where the global winners (two teams from each age
group) will be announced in March.

"We’re thrilled with the response to YouTube Space Lab,” said
Zahaan Bharmal, Google’s Head of Marketing Operations, Europe, Middle
East, and Africa, and the man behind the idea for Space Lab. “They
rose to the challenge - demonstrating great imagination, creativity and
passion with their ideas. Our mission was to inspire the next generation
and the response shows we've done just that. Today's Space Lab entrants
are tomorrow's space explorers.”

High Interest Across the World

Space Lab invited budding scientists in two age categories, 14-16 years
old and 17-18 years old, either alone or in groups of up to three, to
submit a YouTube video describing their experiment to
YouTube.com/SpaceLab. The Space Lab channel, which serves as a launch
pad for discovering the best space and science videos on YouTube, has
received more than 40 million views worldwide.

The majority of entries, approximately 40 per cent, came from India,
followed by the U.S. with 15 per cent. The remaining top 10 countries in
terms of submissions include the U.K., Russia, Israel, Canada, Spain,
Italy, Poland and Japan. Seventy-eight (78) per cent of the entries came
from the 14-16 year old teams and the remaining 22 per cent from the
17-18 year old category.  Nearly half of the youth entered the
competition on their own, while teams of two and three students
comprised slightly more than 50 per cent.

“Space Lab brings together the brightest young minds in the world
today - and we’re impressed with all of the thought-provoking
entries,” said Michael Schmedlen, worldwide director of education,
Lenovo. “From a global education standpoint, we’re seeing a strong
correlation between the entries received and the results from our Global
Student Science and Technology Outlook survey, which revealed that
students in emerging countries - India, Mexico and Russia - have a
greater interest in and prioritize science-related careers more than
their counterparts in developed countries.”

Six regional winners will be announced in February and will gather in
Washington, D.C. in March to experience a ZERO-G flight and receive a
Lenovo IdeaPad laptop. Among them, two global winners, one from each age
group, will be announced. They will have their experiments performed 250
miles above Earth aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and
live-streamed on YouTube from a ThinkPad laptop as part of a global
event celebrating science and space. Additionally, the global winners
will get to choose a unique space experience as a prize:  a trip to
Japan to watch their experiment blast off in a rocket bound for the ISS,
or once they are 18 years old, a one-of-a-kind astronaut training
experience in Star City, Russia, the training centre for Russian
cosmonauts.

Trend Micro Marks 2011 "The Year of Data Breaches"

Jan. 17, 2012

Trend Micro Marks 2011 "The Year of Data Breaches"

A look back: 2011 put a heavy price on data, and the security industry was challenged more than ever to protect this new currency.

CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Having spent much of the year battling data breaches that led to huge information and financial loss, the security industry was likely relieved to see 2011 come to a close. In its annual threat roundup report, Trend Micro (tyo:4704) wraps 2011 as "The Year of Data Breaches," after witnessing large, well-known companies succumb to targeted data breach attacks that not only stained reputations, but caused them significant collateral damage.

Authored by Trend Micro threat researchers, this year's report revisits past predictions, and summarizes notable threat incidents and security wins throughout 2011. Highlights include:

The mobile threat landscape reached new levels of maturity in 2011. Trend Micro threat researchers tracked a staggering spike in the volume of mobile malware, especially those targeting the Android platform. RuFraud and DroidDreamLight -- just two of the most notorious Android malware variants -- took much of the spotlight, causing millions of users lost data and money.

2011 was a profitable year for social media threats, spammers and scammers who leveraged the trending topics of social networking sites to improve upon their social engineering and hacking tactics, stealing the data of millions of social networkers worldwide. Consequently, regulators have started demanding that social networking sites implement policies and mechanisms to protect the privacy of their users.

While the number of publicly reported vulnerabilities decreased from 4,651 in 2010 to 4,155 in 2011, exploit attacks evolved with higher complexity and sophistication. Exploit attacks in 2011 were targeted, original, and well controlled, the most notable of which set their sights on CVE-2011-3402, CVE-2011-3544, and CVE-2011-3414, along with a couple of Adobe product zero-day vulnerabilities that were exploited in the wild.

Finally, despite an aggressive cybercriminal landscape, Trend Micro, along with its industry partners and law enforcement authorities achieved some remarkable and strategic wins this year. One of them - Operation Ghost Click - reached success after 5 years of stealth tracking and working closely with the FBI. Trend Micro, the only security company that was involved, was able to assist the FBI in what was noted as the biggest cybercriminal takedown in history.

"Reflecting back on 2011, I am very proud of what we've achieved. But our work is never done. With 3.5 new threats created every second, and as businesses and consumers take the journey to the cloud, the risk of data and financial loss are greater than ever," said Raimund Genes, CTO. "As a company (and as an industry), we must continue to evolve and create better, data-centric security products for the post-PC era where users need greater visibility and assurance into who is accessing their data, when, where and how."

CANARIE’s call to stakeholders to demonstrate support for mandate renewal generates enthusiastic response

OUR EARS ARE RINGING!

CANARIE’s call to stakeholders to demonstrate support for mandate renewal
generates enthusiastic response

[Ottawa, January 12, 2012] CANARIE, Canada’s Advanced Research and Innovation Network, today announced that a wide range of stakeholders have made their voices heard in support of continued funding for its mandate renewal.

CANARIE operates Canada’s ultra-high speed network, thousands of times faster than the Internet, which enables world-class research and discovery at universities, colleges, research hospitals, government labs and private sector research facilities across the country. CANARIE also funds the development of software to enable wider access to research data and tools.

CANARIE receives funding from the Government of Canada in five-year mandates, and its current mandate expires in March 2012.

“We are delighted with the show of support from our stakeholders, and I would like to thank each and every person who wrote a letter on our behalf,” says Jim Roche, President and CEO of CANARIE. “We hope that this will demonstrate that CANARIE is absolutely vital digital infrastructure that supports not only advanced research and discovery, but innovation in education and the ICT sector as well.”

In response to a request from CANARIE to send letters of support to key government decision-makers, CANARIE stakeholders, from university presidents to high school teachers and PhD students, have made their voices heard. A few excerpts:

“CANARIE delivers meaningful network cost savings to our national platform facilities and major international projects, such as SNOLAB, which is operated by a consortium of Canadian universities, including Queen’s.” ~ Dr. Daniel R. Woolf, Principal and Vice Chancellor, Queen’s University

“CANARIE is a national treasure that fuels a knowledge-based economy integral to equipping researchers with the digital tools required for data-intensive, multidisciplinary, collaborative research.” ~ Dr. B. Mario Pinto, Vice President, Research, Simon Fraser University

“CANARIE has been instrumental in allowing our development efforts to continue in these tight economic times. As a company that must compete globally against companies, like those in the US that have far more funding, CANARIE allows us to remain competitive and continue our product development without the need to raise millions of dollars in funding.” ~ Simon Gauvin, Founder and CEO, Agora Mobile Inc.

“CANARIE is recognized as a world leader in developing new network technologies. CANARIE, together with my team in Victoria and a number of industrial partners recently built and operated an ultra-high speed network between the International Super Computing Conference in Seattle and the University of Victoria. The demonstration project transferred almost 5 Petabytes of data in five days at rates of up to 186 Gigabits/second (likely 20,000 times faster than the connection on your desktop).” ~ Randall J. Sobie, Professor, University of Victoria

“During 2009-10, University College of the North increased its delivery of technology-mediated courses … and technology-enriched or “blended” courses ... These distributed learning technologies are essential to ensure access to education throughout northern Manitoba.” ~ Konrad Jonasson, Interim President, University College of the North

“CANARIE is recognized internationally as an exemplary model of national research and innovation networking.” ~ Douglas R. Edmond, Director of Research, Planning and Systems Management, Winnipeg School Division

The mandate renewal section (www.canarie.ca/en/renewal) of the CANARIE website provides more detailed information on CANARIE’s renewal proposal, as well as information and tools for stakeholders wishing to send messages of support to government decision-makers involved in the renewal process.

» ~ B. devices boosts productivity and enhances communication, especially
while traveling and working out of office. Our goal is to enable the
BYOD shift to happen. Simply put, we make device diversity
manageable."

Miradore streamlines IT management processes and eliminates a large
share of manual work. The cloud-based management solution integrates
all end device management functions across a variety of devices, used
and monitored via a single, unified dashboard.

Phone devices on top of the existing Android and Symbian mobile
devices. The combined IT and mobile management solution also covers
Windows-based servers and workstations, Apple OS X for Mac, all major

protection, as Miradore enables remote locking and wiping of lost or

Retailers to Enhance Customer Experience With Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail

News Press Release
Retailers to Enhance Customer Experience With Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail
Seamless multichannel insight and customer connection enable retailers to deliver a complete shopping experience.

NEW YORK — Jan. 16, 2012 — At the National Retail Federation’s annual conference today, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq “MSFT”) announced the upcoming release of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail, which will provide midsize and enterprise retailers with an end-to-end solution that includes cross-channel capabilities, social and mobile commerce, enriched point of sale (POS), and powerful enhancements for merchandising. These capabilities are designed to help retailers deliver uniquely consistent, convenient and personalized experiences for shoppers.

Mattress Firm is the largest mattress retailer in the U.S. and an early adopter of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail. The company needed a solution to support aggressive growth plans while empowering store and company associates who are passionate about offering best-in-class customer shopping experiences.

“We chose Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail because it provides us with a scalable platform to support our future growth and a differentiated customer and sales associate experience at the point of sale,” said Patty Wade, chief information officer and vice president of Strategy and Technology, Mattress Firm. “Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail gives us what other solutions could not — ease of use and simplicity in operations, coupled with the ability to scale and reliably deliver on our brand promise.”

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail helps retailers do the following:

Connect to customers. Multichannel capabilities enable customers to buy, pick up, return or replace items on their terms. Support for social and mobile commerce means retailers can offer promotions, discounts or coupons targeted to marketplaces or social networks — creating critical new opportunities for customer engagement.

Empower employees. Orders can be created and managed at the POS, offering the sales associate increasing amounts of valuable face-to-face time with customers. Employees can also make highly accurate, timely and consistent decisions because they are armed with relevant details delivered through enhanced Role Centers, dashboards that deliver a succinct set of information relevant to each individual user.

Execute with insight. Integrated multichannel management allows complete insight to help retailers be proactive in anticipating trends. In addition, powerful merchandising functionality puts control into the retailers’ hands with unlimited categories and hierarchies possible for assortment and replenishment to best meet customer demand accurately and efficiently.

Retailers worldwide, including AkzoNobel Decorative Paints, Ashley Furniture Industries, DavidsTea., Kwit-Fit Nederland Groep B.V., Malabar Gold, Mattress Firm, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro Inc., Simon Pearce and Turisme de Barcelona, have chosen Microsoft Dynamics AX for Retail during the past year.

Global partners are also a core part of the retail business solution. “Enterprise customers require core retail data and advanced tools to leverage and create value through analytics,” said Janet Hoffmann, managing director of Accenture’s Retail practice. “Accenture, in close collaboration with global Microsoft specialists Avanade, is developing and delivering solutions built on Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail, which enable clients to connect better with their customers.”

“Today’s retail paradigm puts increased pressure on retailers to build lasting customer loyalty by keeping up with fast-moving trends and exceeding shopper expectations,” said Michael Griffiths, global product director of retail, Microsoft Business Solutions. “Microsoft is all in when it comes to retail — from our stores and consumer devices to the customers already running Microsoft Dynamics AX for Retail in more than 30 countries. We are taking that investment to the next level with Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail.”

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail will be available in more than 25 countries starting Feb. 1, 2012. Retailers interested in learning more about Microsoft Dynamics solutions for the retail industry can visit the Microsoft Dynamics website.

Popular Fujitsu Retail Solution for Digital Media Networks Comes to North America

After More Than a Decade of Powering Retail Campaigns Throughout Europe and Asia Pacific, Fujitsu's Digital Media Network Offering Is Poised to Help North American Retailers Increase Revenue and Improve Customer Experience by Targeting Information and Offers In-Store

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire -01/16/12)- National Retail Federation Convention -- Fujitsu today announced the availability of its popular Digital Media Network (DMN) service in North America. This award-winning and highly flexible solution for bringing multimedia and digital display advertising in-store has seen steady adoption across Europe and Asia Pacific for over a decade. Now North American retailers can use the same versatile communications platform to enhance their retail environment and influence customer behavior by providing and managing high-quality imagery across a range of display technologies, from the smallest retail LCDs to the largest LEDs. Fujitsu will offer a comprehensive demonstration of its Digital Media Network offering at the National Retail Federation's (NRF) Big Show in New York, January 16-17.

"Digital Media Networks have proven their ability to cost effectively drive revenue growth, but the complexity of managing digital media campaigns, delivering the right content to the right location, and aggregating third-party advertising has reduced the net benefits and slowed adoption of the technology in North America," said Brian Yates, Director of Retail Product Marketing at Fujitsu America. "Fujitsu's Digital Media Network offering gives retailers the tools and services they need to optimize the effectiveness of their digital media advertising campaigns and increase revenue as well as customer satisfaction and loyalty."

Fujitsu offers three Digital Media Network service tiers to support each retailer's in-house campaign management capabilities:

  • DMN Solution Implementation provides just the necessary software and hardware platform with a standard range of support services, allowing for full campaign execution and control by the retailer.
  • DMN Operational Managed Service adds end-to-end digital content scheduling and a remote distribution service running from a state-of-the-art Fujitsu data center.
  • DMN Creative Operational Managed Service is the most complete offering, including content creation and management.

Benefits Summary

  • Cost effectively and dynamically inform and inspire customers.
  • Increase revenue by providing relevant, real-time information and offers to consumers at the point of purchase, where most buying decisions are made.
  • Develop new revenue streams through the sale of advertising space to partners and suppliers, with easy and accurate billing.
  • Improve customer dwell time and loyalty through highly targeted information, discounts and rewards.
  • Make more effective use of marketing resources by targeting offers more accurately and lowering print costs.
  • Enhance operational agility by rapidly adjusting offers to address changing market conditions and customer needs 24/7, while also freeing up staff for other activities.
  • Improve decision making by integrating digital media advertising management with CRM applications, such as the Fujitsu CustomerCENTER(TM) and OLCAS systems.

TELentice Technology
The Fujitsu Digital Media Network is powered by TELentice(TM), a proven platform that has evolved over the last 10 years in Australia, Asia-Pacific, the U.S., and Europe, including the London Underground's digital advertising network. The TELentice software suite, which can be delivered "as a Service" on Fujitsu's Cloud platform, and will soon be available on Windows Azure, gives marketers the ability to unify, control and innovate with multiple types of communication touch points and channels on a single platform. Other global customers include CBS Outdoor, Taipei High Speed Rail, Bangkok Thai Rail, KFC, Australian public sector organizations such as the Supreme Courts, Optus, Specialty Fashion Group-City Chic, ANZ, Suncorp, BHP Billiton, and many other leading blue-chip organizations.
