NEC Demonstrates First Terabit/s Superchannel Transmission over 10,000km

NEC Demonstrates First Terabit/s Superchannel Transmission over 10,000km

For immediate use January 10, 2012

Tokyo, January 10, 2012 - NEC Corporation (NEC) has announced the successful experimental demonstration of 1.15-Tb/s ultra-long haul optical transmission over 10,000 kilometers using optical superchannel technology. This is the first instance that a terabit/s channel generated from a single laser source has been transmitted over such a distance. Four superchannels were transmitted together by wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to achieve a total capacity of 4 Tb/s and a spectral efficiency of 3.6 b/s/Hz. The results clearly demonstrate that practical high-capacity transmission for transoceanic communication can be achieved using cost-effective superchannel technology.

Optical superchannels allow phase-locked carriers with independent modulation to overlap in frequency following the principles of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). This enables efficient bandwidth utilization, allowing higher spectral efficiency and higher data rate per laser through parallelization. NEC's system uses state-of-the-art hardware and advanced techniques, including optical multi-tone generation, large-core/ultra low-loss fiber, intradyne digital coherent detection, and digital equalization at higher oversampling, along with well-established technologies such as EDFAs and DP-QPSK modulation. The experiment yielded a 2-dB system margin above the hard decision FEC threshold without using processing-intensive MAP or MLSE algorithms.

This work was conducted by NEC Laboratories America, NEC's research group in Princeton, New Jersey, USA and the result was published as a post-deadline paper in the recent Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP 2011) in Shanghai, China, after rigorous scrutiny by the ACP program committee.

"This success is another example of NEC's continuing leadership in high capacity, long distance optical communication technologies, following its record achievements of 101.7 Tb/s per fiber for single core fiber transmission, the first terabit field trial with coexisting 100G, 450G and 1T signals on the same fiber, and the highest order QAM optical transmission of 1024QAM" confirmed Dr. Yasuhiro Aoki, General Manager for NEC's Submarine Network business.

Oracle Unveils New Release of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service

Oracle Unveils New Release of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service

Enhancements Simplify Globalization, Improve Security and Integration

Redwood Shores, Calif. – Jan. 11, 2012

News Facts

To help retailers increase operational efficiency, improve the customer experience and simplify the payment process across global markets, Oracle today announced a new release of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service.
The latest version of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service provides retailers with greater international functionality and security by providing a common and open interface that can be localized for different markets, providing integration for multiple international payment partners, and using tokenization to further secure customer card data.
The new release also delivers greater efficiency for store associates and simplifies deployments through expanded integrations with Oracle and third-party solutions.

Enabling Commerce Across Global Markets

To simplify and consolidate payment authorization, one of the most complex and labor-intensive challenges for international retailers, Oracle Retail Point-of-Service now provides an Authorized Payment Foundation.
The Authorized Payment Foundation is a secure and flexible application programming interface that isolates the authorization process from the Point-of-Service and enables integration with payment processing solutions from industry leaders such as ACI Worldwide and Servebase.
Retailers that take advantage of the Authorized Payment Foundation will have a configurable, extensible and hot-pluggable localization foundation necessary to address the ever-changing requirements for payment authorization that supports payment devices and multiple gateway and switch providers around the world.

Using Biometrics to Improve Security

Using integrated biometrics from a leading global provider of authentication and endpoint protection for access, data and communication, DigitalPersona, the latest release of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service simplifies and strengthens compliance with PCI security standards by allowing operators to login using their fingerprint.
The biometrics features solve the operational challenge of PCI compliant passwords by replacing PINs or passwords with the touch of a fingerprint and eliminate the opportunity for an unauthorized employee to use a manager’s ID or swipe card to access the Point-of-Service or inappropriately approve an override.

Speeding Transactions and Improving Store Operations

Oracle Retail Point-of-Service now includes image-based quick reference screens that allow a cashier to quickly view pictures or icons to easily add an item to the transaction. This eliminates the need for cashiers to consult a “Scan Book” to find item numbers, which can slow down the checkout process.
To further improve checkout, the new release extends integration with Oracle Retail Price Management to improve the configurability of threshold-based promotions, such as, “buy two get one free” and “equal or lesser value” promotions.
Oracle Retail Point-of-Service also now enables store managers to preview point-of-service reports at anytime, without sending the entire report to print. It also delivers user interface improvements such as more visible status and transaction totals and highlights where input is needed from the store associate.
ACI Worldwide, DigitalPersona and Servebase are Gold level members in Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN).

Supporting Quote

“Globalization is one of the primary sources of growth for retailers, and Oracle Retail Point-of-Service is focused on helping retailers quickly serve new markets while localizing offerings and providing a key component for cross-channel retailing,” said Mike Webster, senior vice president and general manager, Oracle Retail. “This release of Oracle Retail Stores demonstrates our ongoing commitment to lead the industry in meeting the needs of retailers now and in the future.”

"We are delighted to be partnering with Intel to deliver smartphones and tablets based on Intel's Atom processor to consumers and businesses," said Sanjay Jha, Chairman and CEO, Motorola Mobility. "Though there are 5 billion mobile subscribers in the world, less than 800 million are using a smartphone today. With Android as the leading smartphone OS globally and advancements in computing technology we see tremendous opportunity for the converged devices market."

Smartphones and tablets are quickly becoming an indispensible part of people's daily lives -- making them constant companions. The strategic relationship between Intel and Motorola Mobility will expand opportunity for continued innovation in these areas as they work closely to leverage Intel's low power system-on-chip (SoC) roadmap for Motorola Mobility's converged mobile device portfolio. The companies will collaborate across hardware, software and services to deliver complete solutions and disruptive new user experiences that offer long battery life, increased computing performance, advanced imaging and video capabilities, and seamless wireless connections.

HP Delivers Enhanced Fan Experience by Extending Access to Paul McCartney’s Digital Library

New paulmccartney.com portal provides access to music legend’s personal collection of songs, images, lyrics and more

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 12, 2012

HP today announced that music fans now have unprecedented access to Paul McCartney’s new portal destination, www.paulmccartney.com, which hosts the musician’s vast digital library of music, lyrics, photos, collections, merchandise, blogs and more.

Over the past year, HP and Paul McCartney’s MPL Communications, Ltd. worked closely to design, deploy and maintain a private cloud-based digital library that catalogs and stores more than a million items from McCartney’s expansive personal collection, which spans more than five decades. Until now, the digital library had provided internal access only to MPL Communications, Ltd.

McCartney’s new dynamic portal leverages the assets and functionality of the underlying digital library to create an engaging and immersive experience for the music community. Built by HP and MPL Communications, Ltd., the site delivers an intuitive and user-friendly experience for fans, with metadata tagging and contextual structuring that enables types of content to be related.

Fans can view precisely what they want in a variety of ways. For example, they can search a certain album and find not only the songs, but also additional information associated with the songs, including lyrics, photography and videos.

“The idea is to intrigue people and bring them into our world with new facts, new photographs, news of what’s happening, accounts of what happened, backstage moments and all the stuff we can give that nobody else can,” said McCartney. “The website really brings the digital library to life by constantly pulling new content from my personal collection so there’s always a new experience for visitors.”

HP Enterprise Services built the digital library on an HP Converged Infrastructure – using servers, storage, networking and software – to seamlessly integrate the digital library and website.

HP technology gives MPL Communications, Ltd. the flexibility to easily retrieve assets for public use via the underlying digital library. As a result, fans also have the opportunity to select assets that are customized for on-demand viewing.

The new website also features a unique online music player – The Jukebox – that fans can use to listen to songs and build personal playlists with music pulled from the digital library. At the click of a link, fans can access historical information from a selection of McCartney songs or albums.

“Fans expect a richer and deeper experience than ever before,” said Jan Zadak, executive vice president, Global Sales, HP. “Our work with MPL Communications, Ltd. showcases the integral role that technology plays in driving the success of an Instant-On music organization, by redefining the fan experience.”

Extracting business insight from data

HP Information Optimization solutions played a critical role in organizing and categorizing McCartney’s personal collection for the digital library. The solutions provide a view into fan preferences, traffic trends and buying patterns on the website; MPL Communications, Ltd. is then able to convert this massive amount of data into business-actionable insight.

Protecting and monitoring the fan experience

HP Enterprise Security experts assessed the security needs for the library and the website to develop a solution that protects priceless assets and performs automated website performance monitoring to maintain the highest level of performance and service levels.

 Instant management through hybrid delivery

HP also designed a Hybrid Delivery solution that consists of an HP-hosted private cloud combined with the MPL Communications, Ltd.’s redesigned and expanded on-premise IT infrastructure, so the company can manage and scale the website anywhere, anytime.
