New Release of Oracle(R) Database Firewall Extends Support to MySQL and Enhances Reporting Capabilities

New Release of Oracle® Database Firewall Extends Support to MySQL and Enhances Reporting Capabilities

Redwood Shores, Calif. – January 9, 2012

News Facts

In an effort to assist organizations further prevent internal and external attacks from reaching their enterprise databases, Oracle today announced a new release of Oracle® Database Firewall which introduces support for MySQL Enterprise Edition, complementing previously announced support for Oracle Database 11g and earlier releases, IBM DB2 Linux Unix Windows, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) and Sybase SQL Anywhere.
This latest release of Oracle Database Firewall also features new reporting capabilities including new reports that help to further address regulatory compliance.

Network-Based Security Software Helps Prevent Attacks from Reaching Databases

To address threats like SQL injections, Oracle Database Firewall establishes a defensive perimeter around databases, while monitoring and enforcing normal application behavior in real-time to help prevent SQL injection attacks as well as unauthorized attempts to access sensitive information.
According to the most recent IOUG Data Security Survey, only 36 percent of respondents have taken steps to ensure their applications are not subject to SQL injection attacks. (1)
Oracle Database Firewall now protects MySQL databases against data breaches without requiring any changes to existing applications, the database infrastructure or the existing operating system of the target database.
To enhance reporting capabilities, Oracle Database Firewall introduces a new reporting infrastructure for running and modifying the layout of existing reports. Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher customers can take advantage of all capabilities offered for authoring, managing, and delivering highly formatted documents that can be designed using familiar desktop products.
Featuring dozens of prebuilt and customizable reports, this new release of Oracle Database Firewall introduces 10 new out-of-the-box reports to further help organizations comply with privacy and regulatory mandates such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS) and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).
This new release of the Oracle Database Firewall also offers a new proxy operating mode that allows customers even greater flexibility in deploying it on the network. In addition, new 'multi-core' management capabilities offer administrators fine-grained control over the resources allocated to protect specific databases for even greater scalability.
To ensure that customers can adopt a defense-in-depth strategy, Oracle Database Firewall is now also integrated with Oracle Advanced Security allowing encrypted traffic to Oracle Databases to be monitored for potential threats.
Part of Oracle's comprehensive portfolio of database security solutions, Oracle Database Firewall complements Oracle Advanced Security, Oracle Audit Vault and Oracle Database Vault. Together, the products support Oracle’s commitment to provide customers with the most comprehensive and advanced security offerings that help reduce the costs and complexity of securing their business information across the enterprise.

“Organizations can further enhance enterprise database security with Oracle Database Firewall,” said Vipin Samar, vice president of Database Security, Oracle. “With new MySQL support, Oracle Database Firewall extends the combination of databases that organizations can secure across their enterprise. The improved reporting capabilities automate time-consuming regulatory compliance reporting functions.”
“Oracle Database Firewall examines SQL traffic, creating a specific perimeter around databases,” said Martin Kuppinger, Founder and Principal Analyst, KuppingerCole. “Based on its grammar-based analytical approach and a well thought out and efficiently manageable policy approach, organizations can relatively quickly implement Oracle Database Firewall while minimizing the risk of disruption to database applications.”
“Since most customers are at risk of SQL injection attacks, the Oracle Database Firewall provides much needed security," said Andy Flower, President of the Independent Oracle User Group (IOUG). "Oracle Database Firewall is an example of the necessary first line of defense for large and small customers that can monitor database activity and block threats before they even reach the database. This new release shows Oracle listens to the customer community with inputs like the IOUG Security Survey. I'm sure our members are pleased with Oracle's commitment to investing in securing Oracle and non-Oracle databases.”

Canadian Web Hosting, Green Data Centre Offer Joyent SmartDataCenter in Canada

Canadian Web Hosting, Green Data Centre Offer Joyent SmartDataCenter in Canada

  • By Liam Eagle, January 04, 2012

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Canadian Web Hosting announced on Wednesday that it had partnered with Canadian data center operator Green Data Centre Inc. to distribute Joyent’s SmartDataCenter product to Canadian Web Hosting’s softwar as a service clients in Canada, enabling them to access a more flexible range of cloud computing offerings.

SmartDataCenter is Joyent’s cloud infrastructure stack, a cloud platform the company says is optimized “at every level” for service providers.

While it isn’t completely explained in the press release, the implication seems to be that Green Data Centre is supplier of data center space to Canadian Web Hosting, and has assisted the company in deploying the Joyent platform. The release also suggests that the Canadian Web Hosting cloud products will be available to GDC customers.

"With the SmartDataCenter platform, we are able to control access to our pool of resources and better manage timing, throughput and latency giving that helps us deliver an elevated quality of service because of the amount of control we can give our customers. Working with Canadian Web Hosting, we are able to deploy faster and more robust clouds when compared to other cloud products on the market. Our customers now have a competitive advantage," says Emerich Winkler, CEO of Green Data Centre Inc., quoted in the press release.

The end result of the work, however, is that the companies have reduced the time it takes to deliver Joyent-based cloud services to clients, and reduced deployment costs by more than 50 percent. Canadian Web Hosting says it worked directly with Joyent, as well as with GDC, to deploy SmartDataCenter in line with its CICA 5970 and SAS70 Type II credentials to ensure the solution met the compliance requirements of its customers.

CWH says it now offers cloud solutions based on Microsoft’s Hyper-v, VMware, Citrix Xen and now Joyent’s SmartDataCenter.

"Cloud computing can be a simple web-based application available to customers online, or an array of high powered servers capable of processing thousands of transactions for customers worldwide. The only constant for our customers is the cloud itself. In reviewing the broad types of cloud infrastructures required by our customers, and their primary business functions, SmartDataCenter represents a perfect combination of flexibility and performance,” says Matt McKinney, managing director at Canadian Web Hosting, quoted in the press release.

Based in Nova Scotia, Canada, Green Data Centre, Inc. says it works to be a leader in the Canadian market when it comes to deploying green information and communications technology, and to promote environmental responsibility.

Instant Media Mode (IMM). IMM includes a Qualcomm dual core processor,
up to 16 GB of memory and a custom Linux-based operating system. To
switch to IMM from Windows, users simply click on an icon on the
laptop’s home screen. With IMM, the laptop operates much like a
smartphone, remaining turned on and requiring fewer charging sessions.

Via IMM, users can watch videos, view photos, listen to music and
browse the web while preserving precious battery life. Pioneered by
ThinkPad, the ThinkPad X1 Hybrid laptop also includes Rapid Charge2,
technology that charges the battery up to 80 per cent in just 30
minutes.

The Best of ThinkPad X1
Measuring less than 0.6-inches and weighing less than four pounds, the
13.3-inch ThinkPad X1 Hybrid goes heavy on performance by doubling the
CPU performance and quadrupling the graphics performance of previous
Lenovo 13-inch laptops. The hybrid comes equipped with choices of the
latest Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors and the Windows 7 o
perating
system.

While a great crossover PC, the ThinkPad X1 Hybrid remains a
business-class laptop first with features like optional mobile
broadband, a high definition display that includes Corning® Gorilla®
Glass and a high definition web camera and microphones for video and
voice calling. It also has robust security layered with Intel vPro3
technology, encrypted hard drives with remote management support and a
fingerprint reader. Content on the ThinkPad X1 Hybrid looks good and
sounds good in both Windows and IMM. The laptop features Dolby Home
Theater v4 sound, an HDMI port and Intel Wireless Display technology to
connect and stream 1080p video wirelessly to a TV or projector.

Ultrabook That’s All Business
Lenovo’s first business ultrabook, the ThinkPad T430u, equips
business users with the same thin and light designs found in consumer
ultrabooks without sacrificing business-class performance, and it comes
at a mainstream price starting at US $849.

The stylish ThinkPad T430u ultrabook borrows some of the elements
typically found on premium laptops, such as a matte finish that’s soft
to the touch and an aluminum top cover that complements its small - less
than 0.8-inches and less than four pound - frame. It also sports
ThinkPad’s new modern and minimalist island-style keyboard.

The 14-inch laptop has business-primed features including:

● Choices of the latest Intel Core processors and Intel integrated or
NVIDIA graphics
● Choice of SSD storage or up to 1 TB of HD storage
● Up to six hours of battery life
● Quick resume and fast boot up
● Lenovo Solution Centre powered by Intel Small Business Advantage
for energy savings and remote management, a set of productivity and
security tools helping to enable overnight energy savings and automatic
patch updates

Pricing and Availability4

available starting in Q2 2012 and Q3 2012 respectively, through business

Statement

Lenovo today announced to its employees worldwide the evolution of its
organizational structure from three go-to-market geographic
organizations (Mature Markets, Emerging Markets, and China) to four new
geographic regions that are balanced in size, focused on growth and well
positioned to implement the company's strategy worldwide.  These regions
and their leaders are:

● Asia Pacific/Latin America – led by SVP (and current head of
Mature Markets) Milko Van Duijl
● North America – led by SVP (and current GM of North America)
David Schmoock
● China – Led by SVP (and current GM of China) Chen Xudong
● EMEA – Effective April 2, this geography will be led by
Gianfranco Lanci (currently a consultant to Lenovo, and former CEO of
Acer)

The changes will be effective beginning April 2 (the first Monday of
the new fiscal year).

This is a structural change, not a strategy change.  These new regions
will create four stronger, faster, and more focused organizations to
execute Lenovo’s "protect and attack" strategy.  This strategy, which
is based upon driving profitable growth in its core businesses (e.g.
commercial PCs, China) , and aggressively seeking new opportunities in
those markets where we see the greatest potential for future growth
(e.g. emerging countries, mobile, consumer), has helped Lenovo drive
industry-leading results for the past 2+ years.

Since 2009 when Lenovo created its Mature and Emerging markets model,
the company has doubled in size in terms of market share and climbed
from number 4 in worldwide PCs to number 2.  Lenovo has, outperformed
the market for 10 straight quarters, has been the fastest growing major
PC company for eight straight quarters, and  achieved record market
share and unit sales.  The company has also launched a mobile internet
and digital home business unit and has begun selling tablets and other
consumer devices worldwide.  Additionally, Lenovo has added major new
operations to our business with the NEC joint venture in Japan and
Medion acquisition in Germany both well underway.

The company expects the new organizational structure to help it
maintain this momentum and position it for continued long term success.
According to CEO Yuanqing Yang's internal note to employees: “Our new
organizational structure will accelerate our end-to-end operational
speed.  It will help us deliver on our strategy in every market.
Combined with continued focus on strong execution, this will enable us
to continue our great performance and put Lenovo in position to achieve
our long-term objective of being a global leader in PCs, mobile devices
and innovative personal technology.”

Symantec's Control Compliance Suite achieves Common Criteria EAL +3 Security Certification

Symantec’s Control Compliance Suite achieves Common Criteria EAL +3 Security Certification

TORONTO, ON. – 5 January, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) has today announced that its enterprise-class IT risk and compliance solution, Control Compliance Suite, has earned the Common Criteria certification EAL + 3. Provision of this worldwide standard verifies that the software has completed a rigorous independent testing process of specification, implementation and evaluation, and conforms to standards sanctioned by the International Standards Organization.

Common Criteria Certification testing is managed by an independent evaluation firm and is recognized by public sector security authorities and organizations with high-level security requirements for its expertise and adherence to published international security regulations. Common Criteria is an important worldwide evaluation for security products and is recognized in 20 countries around the world including the UK, USA, Canada, Germany and Australia.

Symantec’s Control Compliance Suite is a holistic, fully-automated solution to manage all aspects of IT risk and compliance, designed to provide visibility into an organization’s security and compliance posture while lowering cost and complexity.

In many high security and government organizations in the public sector, software applications must meet strict criteria known as Common Criteria/EAL. Such is the robustness of Symantec’s Control Compliance Suite, it has passed this stringent inspection and been awarded one of the highest grades possible, providing customers with the confidence that the software has gone through the most thorough testing procedures.

Jane Doorly, Vice President European Research, IDC comments on the importance of compliance today: “In recent years, there has been a higher level of adoption and spending in technologies and services that enable companies to meet their compliance objectives. As a result of this trend, we have seen the importance and relevance of independent testing and Common Criteria certification increase, making it a vital element of an organization’s purchasing process.”

Guido Sanchidrian, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Symantec, commented: “Being awarded a Common Criteria EAL +3 is testament to the continuous hard work and commitment Symantec puts into the development of its products and meeting its customers’ security needs. The award of this certification has resulted in positive feedback from Symantec’s customers, particularly from the public sector, which naturally demands the very highest of security standards. It is crucial that customers have a high level of confidence and trust in their security solutions and an independent review of this caliber is an important step toward building that confidence.”
