Canadian Distance Learning on the Rise, According to New Report

Canadian Distance Learning on the Rise, According to New Report

Offers Guidance to Facilitate Adoption of Technology and Improve Training

INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new report on online learning in Canada indicates that distance learning continues to grow and is now available in all thirteen provinces and territories.

“Canada was one of the first countries to embrace technology and the Internet to deliver distance learning courses to students in remote locations, and growth of online learning in Canada has been significant”

The annual report, the fourth in the series, State of the Nation: K-12 Online Learning in Canada, was released today by the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL) at the Virtual School Symposium (www.virtualschoolsymposium.org), iNACOL’s annual conference, November 9 -11 in Indianapolis.

“Canada was one of the first countries to embrace technology and the Internet to deliver distance learning courses to students in remote locations, and growth of online learning in Canada has been significant,” said iNACOL President and CEO Susan Patrick.

The report finds that the total number and proportion of K-12 students enrolled in distance education has increased from year to year, with British Columbia leading the way with the most structured regulations and highest number and highest percentage of student participation. Other jurisdictions reporting notable growth were Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba.

“Unlike in the United States, K-12 online learning in Canada is still primarily seen as a substitute when face-to-face learning is not feasible or not available,” said Wayne State University Assistant Professor Michael K. Barbour, the author of the report. “However, this is beginning to change in many urban centers and more populous provinces where online learning is seen as an alternate way to deliver education to students who have not had success in the traditional school environment.”

In addition to provincial and territorial profiles, this year’s report also includes a comprehensive survey of 242 individual programs or jurisdictions offering K-12 distance education.

The report is available on iNACOL’s web site at www.inacol.org.

About iNACOL

iNACOL is the International Association for K-12 Online Learning, a non-profit 501(c)(3) membership association based in the Washington, DC area with more than 3,800 members. iNACOL is unique in that its members represent a diverse cross-section of K-12 education from school districts, charter schools, state education agencies, non-profit organizations, colleges, universities and research institutions, corporate entities and other content and technology providers (www.inacol.org). iNACOL is host to the annual Virtual School Symposium (VSS). VSS 2011 is being held Nov. 9 - 11, 2011 in Indianapolis, IN (www.virtualschoolsymposium.org).

CDW Canada donates technology and financial support to SickKids

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CDW Canada donates technology and financial support to SickKids

Etobicoke, ON — November 9, 2011 — CDW Canada, a leading provider of technology solutions for Canadian organizations in the public and private sectors, today announced it has donated more than $22,000 and 18 computers to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto. The donation will expand the technology resources available to SickKids patients, families and staff. CDW Canada presented its donations today at the hospital in the Simulation Centre, one of the many sites that will receive new technology.

“CDW Canada is very happy to support SickKids and provide technology that will be used by patients and staff alike,” said Mary Ann Yule, Vice President and General Manager, CDW Canada. “Our organization has been a proud supporter of SickKids for three years, and most recently our coworkers raised more than $22,000 during an annual fundraiser which was donated in addition to the technology. As a top solutions provider, we know how integral technology is to help optimize healthcare. We’re especially happy to hear that our donation will go to not only help and train hospital staff, but will also be used by patients and their families so they can be connected during their hospital stay.”

CDW Canada donated a total of 18 English and French computers to the hospital — including laptops, notebooks and desktop PCs — which will be used in several areas:

  • Clinical Areas: Some of the donated laptops will be used in clinical areas — including Neurology, Bone Marrow Transplant and Oncology — to allow young patients to stay connected to the outside world of family, friends and school. This is especially comforting for patients who are confined to their hospital bed and unable to be with loved ones. They will also be able to use the computers to do activities and play games, providing a great distraction to help decrease anxiety and stress during hospitalization.

  • Simulation Centre: The Simulation Program at SickKids seeks to advance paediatric clinical education by offering individuals and teams the opportunity to practice routine procedures and life-saving techniques, and to recognize and treat rare conditions in a real-time environment without any risk to patients. The Learning Institute launched a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre in 2009 which features a high-fidelity lab, debriefing room, procedural training space and a control room. Used in combination with lower-fidelity mannequins, the donated laptops will be used to display vital signs, thereby increasing the realism of the scenario during mock code training. They will also be used during simulation training sessions for participants to view presentations, training materials, videos and more.

  • Learning Disabilities Research Program: For almost 30 years, the Learning Disabilities Research Program (LDRP) at SickKids has been collaborating with school boards across the Greater Toronto Area and the province to improve services for children and teens who struggle to learn to read and write.  The LDRP develops and evaluates interventions for children and adolescents who have significant learning difficulties and has seen more than 6,000 children in its laboratory classrooms to date. The additional computer will be used for data analysis as well as program development activities, allowing staff to move forward with research projects and the writing of new learning materials for children.

-more-

  • Ontario Poison Centre: This centre electronically documents all calls in patient records, which  are gathered to generate statistical reports and conduct research. Computers at the centre and at its satellite office at Montfort Hospital in Ottawa will be upgraded courtesy of the donation. The Montfort office is a bilingual site which specifically supports services to the Francophone community in Ontario.

  • Family Resource Centre: The AboutKidsHealth Family Resource Centre provides services to inpatient and outpatient families. The Centre and the AboutKidsHealth website offer information for families as well as community-based professionals to help with the health and quality of life of children. The donated computer will be used by families who wish to search for health information or simply want to keep in touch with family members and friends.

  • Interpreter Services: Interpreter Services is an on-site, service-oriented resource that provides language service to patients and their families receiving care at SickKids. Trained interpreters are on-hand to help families.

  • Telemedicine: SickKids is able to stay connected to patients and healthcare professionals provincially, nationally and internationally through telemedicine. Live interactive videoconferencing technology and high-speed telecommunications networks are used for patient consultation and professional medical education.

“We are so grateful for CDW Canada’s donation to SickKids. This technology donation, as well as the generous support of CDW Canada’s employees, touches many different areas of the hospital and will help patients and families stay connected,” said Diane Armes-Redrupp, Senior Development Officer, SickKids Foundation. “Our corporate partners make a big difference to the families who rely on SickKids, and donations like these help SickKids continue to be a leader in paediatric research, learning and care.”

EMC Heritage Trust Project Grant to Help Library Digitize and Preserve Largest Collection of Canadian Company Annual Reports

EMC Heritage Trust Project Grant to Help Library Digitize and Preserve Largest Collection of Canadian Company Annual Reports

C.B. "Bud" Johnston Library collection includes the histories of Canadian Tire Inc. and Labatt Breweries of Canada

TORONTO, Nov. 10, 2011 /CNW/ - EMC Corporation today announced the C.B. "Bud" Johnston Library, part of The University of Western Ontario Libraries, was one of eight organizations worldwide receiving an EMC Heritage Trust Project grant through the company's Information Heritage Initiative program. Through the initiative, EMC has donated more than $20 million to date to help advance the preservation and accessibility of information heritage. The 2011 grants will support projects that digitize, protect and improve access to cultural information in communities around the world.

"This is the fourth year of the EMC Heritage Trust Project and the fourth time we have had at least one Canadian organization receiving a grant," said Michael Sharun, Managing Director of EMC Canada. "Preserving Canada's heritage plays an important role in maintaining our cultural identity and EMC is proud to support organizations seeking to make this country's past more accessible."

"Photographs, ancient writings, letters, film, music and visual art are all part of the world's information heritage. Yet many of these historical treasures are at risk of disappearing," said Bill Teuber, Vice Chairman, EMC Corporation. "Through the EMC Heritage Trust Project, we are dedicated to helping local community organizations worldwide preserve and protect these historic artifacts so that future generations can continue to enjoy and learn from them."

The C.B. "Bud" Johnston Library houses the largest collection of Canadian businesses' annual reports in the country. The US$10,000 Heritage Trust Project grant will be used to help digitize the collection and make it more accessible to researchers.

"Our library is shifting from being a storehouse for printed material to being more of a knowledge centre for the Richard Ivey School of Business, which is also part of The University of Western Ontario," says Joyce Garnett, University Librarian. "The goal is to allow people to better interact in a digital environment and digitizing the annual report collection will be a big step forward in achieving that goal."

The Canadian Annual Reports Collection encompasses more than 6,300 firms, dating back as far as 1867. The Libraries' collection includes the annual reports and other documents of two iconic Canadian companies - Canadian Tire Inc. and Labatt Breweries of Canada, now part of Anheuser-Busch InBev. The reports are of value not only because of the financial record they provide of individual companies, but also because they present a view of the social and cultural thoughts from the past and the corporate stories of individual companies.

Digitizing the collection not only makes it more accessible; it helps protect the collection from damage or theft.

The EMC Information Heritage Initiative program was formalized in 2007 to recognize organizations and individuals that protect and preserve invaluable cultural information from around the world through digitization, allowing readily accessible online research and education. Using the same criteria for excellence that guide this initiative and deployed in local communities, the EMC Heritage Trust Project was created to recognize and support people and projects that practice and inspire the digital stewardship of the world's information heritage. For 2011, EMC received 95 applications from 19 countries for grant consideration.

The EMC Heritage Trust Project grant recipients were selected based on the following criteria: potential size of the audience that would benefit from access to this information; the at-risk status of the information and why it is urgent to digitize; and how significant the EMC grant would be to the overall success of the project.

For more information on the EMC Heritage Trust Project, please visit: www.EMC.com/heritage_trust.

Primus Canada Expanding its Data Centre Footprint in the Greater Toronto Area

Primus Canada Expanding its Data Centre Footprint in the Greater Toronto Area

New Data Centre in Markham to offer businesses scalability, flexibility in fully secure facility certified to the Uptime Institute's Tier III Site specifications

TORONTO, Nov. 9, 2011 /CNW/ - Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. (Primus Canada), a wholly owned subsidiary of PTGi (Primus Telecommunications Group, Incorporated) (NYSE: PTGI), today announced that construction has begun on a new high density Data Centre facility in Markham to meet the spiking demand among GTA businesses for mission critical and business continuity solutions. This newest member of Primus Canada's national footprint of 8 data centres is designed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, will be certified by the Uptime Institute as a Tier III site, and will offer advanced Disaster Recovery features.

The new Toronto Data Centre enhances the scale of Primus Canada's IT management services and represents significant progress in the transformation of the company into a full-service, next-generation, information and communications technology provider. This investment is further evidence that Primus Canada is committed to growth and expansion in data centre capabilities as part of a total PTGi strategy.  The Toronto-based management team is working on delivering enhanced enterprise-quality IT facilities to key metropolitan cities all across Canada.

"Through our continuing national expansion program, we now have one of the largest data centre footprints in the country.  Our Primus Business Services team has demonstrated its expertise and ongoing execution capabilities to be considered a data centre leader for the business market across Canada," says Andrew Day, CEO of Primus Canada.   "We are designing and constructing state-of-the-art Tier III facilities that aim to meet our customer's managed services and cloud platform requirements well into the future."

The first phase of this 30,000 square foot GTA Data Centre initiative will be a 7,500 square foot pod that is built to LEED standards for environmental sustainability.  The Data Centre will include an innovative HVAC system that leverages free-air cooling and optimized air distribution to achieve a 50 per cent reduction in energy utilization over their current facility designs, and effectively eliminate the water usage and waste resulting from the HVAC plant that is used in most data centre designs today. As a result, companies that elect to host their IT services in the Primus Canada Data Centre can better meet targets for environmental sustainability, which is quickly growing in importance for high-end customers.

"We have seen tremendous growth in demand for our data centre services, and expect double digit increases in FCEs despite the current economic volatility. Today, businesses trying to stretch their capital dollars are quickly realizing the benefits of data centre hosting services," said AJ Byers, Executive Vice-President of Primus Business Services. "We have been servicing data centre needs across Canada for more than 10 years now, and we recognize that businesses need higher density facilities that meet the highest levels of certification for service availability.  We believe that we are a perfect match to address the ongoing environmental challenges that surround mission critical computing facilities."

To ensure clients' data is available to them when needed, the new facility will be certified to the Uptime Institute's Tier III Site specifications. To achieve this certification, the site must have multiple independent distribution paths serving the IT equipment, all IT equipment must be dual-powered and fully compatible with the topology of a site's architecture and include concurrently maintainable site infrastructure guaranteeing the highest standards for service availability in the Canadian data centre market.

Although Disaster Recovery is a growing concern of businesses, a recent survey by the AFCOM, the world's leading data center association, found that more than 15 per cent of all data centres have no plan for business continuity or disaster recovery. Primus' Data Centres can assist businesses in safeguarding their sensitive data as they are housed in a highly secure infrastructure, with full server and generator backup in case of a power outage, and protection against environmental emergencies with advanced fire and cooling protection; so invaluable data, such as customer information and financial records, remain safe at all times.

Primus Canada's Data Centre services offered by Primus Business Services enable businesses to see the following benefits:

  • Increased peace of mind: Each Data Centre has obtained full Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance, Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) Section 5970 Type B and Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements (SSAE) No. 16 (previously called Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) 70 Type II) certifications so that businesses who select a Primus Canada certified Data Centre can reduce the complexity and investment required to ensure their own compliance.
  • Reduced cost of IT infrastructure ownership: Building and maintaining data centres is quite costly.  By selecting a managed data centre or cloud solution, customers do not have to invest in managing the facility, its back-up systems, or the power requirements thus allowing businesses to utilize their precious resources to invest in growing the business.
  • Increased internal resource efficiencies: Choosing a managed data centre permits companies to utilize their internal IT resources more effectively. Primus Canada provides 24/7 support for servers, and can manage a variety of outsourced responsibilities so businesses can shift their focus to more strategic initiatives.
  • The Primus Canada network backbone connects its Data Centres: Primus Canada customers are offered a fully packaged solution with connectivity access and data centre hosting services.  Businesses need only partner with Primus Business Services for the full suite of IT services - it's a single service point for business.

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) is one of Canada's largest single-industry trade associations, representing more than 100,000 real estate brokers/agents and salespeople working through more than 100 real estate Boards and Associations. CREA has used Primus services, including DNS Hosting and Server Colocation, since 2004.

Christian Probst, Director of IT for CREA said, "Primus gives us the availability, capacity and continuity we need to serve our members and help Canadians across the country to find new homes - every day, 24/7."

Shaw Launches Canada's Fastest Inter City Fibre-Optic Network

Network makes Shaw first provider in Canada capable of carrying Internet, voice, video and data at 100 Gigabits per second

CALGARY, Alberta, Nov. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Shaw communications announced the next generation of Canada's fastest Internet, with the launch of the nation's first 100 Gigabit per second (Gbit/s) fibre-optic network.

The network, delivered by Alcatel-Lucent, has the capability of carrying up to eighty-eight 100 Gbit/s channels over a single pair of fibres. The result is a game-changing network able to handle up to 133 million voice calls, 440,000 HDTV channels, or transmit 44 Blu-ray Discs in one second.

"People are demanding more from their Internet experience, and as a leader in Broadband Internet, Shaw continues to upgrade to bring Canadians the best Internet experience," said Peter Bissonnette, President, Shaw Communications Inc. "The launch of this fibre-optic network allows us to lay the foundation in delivering a new Internet experience for our customers."

The technology delivers services at a rate of 100 Gbit/s – 10 times faster than Shaw's existing fibre-optic network. The launch follows a field trial over a 350-kilometre network between Calgary and Edmonton. Enhancements to the fibre-optic network will benefit both residential and business customers by providing new services, speed and reliability that is part of the Shaw Internet experience.

Shaw was also the first provider in Canada to trial Gigabit Internet in April 2010, delivered through Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) and will be able to support new and emerging Internet applications that require faster download speeds over the new fibre-optic network.

Allot MobileTrends Charging Report Shows 35% of Operators Already Offering Value-Based Charging Plans Such as Toll-Free Facebook

Allot MobileTrends Charging Report Shows 35% of Operators Already Offering Value-Based Charging Plans Such as Toll-Free Facebook

86.5% of operators have walked away from 'true unlimited' data

BOSTON, Nov. 9, 2011 /CNW/ - Allot Communications Ltd. (NASDAQ: ALLT), a leading supplier of service optimization and revenue generation solutions for fixed and mobile broadband service providers worldwide, announced today that its inaugural Allot MobileTrends Charging Report shows that 35% of operators are already implementing Value-based Charging strategies such as Bill-shock prevention and Social Networking plans that make applications such as Facebook, MySpace & Twitter zero-rated. The MobileTrends Charging Report is based on publicly available data, collected during Q3, 2011 from over 100 mobile operators worldwide.

The face of mobile data charging is constantly evolving with a vast range of go-to-market strategies already being deployed; it is often difficult to keep abreast of developments. The MobileTrends Charging Report captures a snapshot of mobile data charging models and provides a baseline to measure the change as the market evolves.

Today, operators are moving away from All-you-can-eat data plans towards Volume-based models, aimed at curbing usage, deferring investments and increasing ARPU.

"This is a crucial time for mobile operators to adopt new charging modes that allow subscribers to maximize the value they get out of their data plan," said Monica Paolini, PhD, Founder and President of Senza Fili Consulting. "The Allot MobileTrends Charging report shows that many operators have already started shaping win-win usage models that do just that, while also optimizing the utilization of network resources."

According to the Allot MobileTrends Charging Report:

• 35% of operators sampled are already offering Value-based Charging plans, such as zero-rated Facebook

• Only 13.5% of operators sampled are currently offering 'true unlimited' plans

• 26% of operators sampled already have revenue sharing deals and charging models in place

• 48% of operators sampled are currently curbing data overage

• 15% of operators sampled charge for tethering, mainly in North America and EMEA

• Cloud music providers, Spotify, Pandora and Rhapsody are driving the revenue sharing charge

"Our MobileTrends Charging Report reaffirms the trend towards Value-based Charging we see in the market, which is evident from the use-cases being rolled out by our customers," said Andrei Elefant, Allot's Vice President of Marketing. "The first-movers are already reaping the financial rewards from this transition."

The full Allot MobileTrends Charging Report (complete with graphics) can be found on: http://www.allot.com/MobileTrendsChargingReport.html

A Webinar will be held with Fierce Wireless on November 9, 2011, 11 am ET / 8 am PT, to discuss the report findings and implications.

Gartner Says Worldwide Security Service Spending on Pace to Reach $35.1 Billion in 2011

Gartner Says Worldwide Security Service Spending on Pace to Reach $35.1 Billion in 2011

STAMFORD, Conn., November 9, 2011—

Worldwide security services spending is on pace to reach $35.1 billion in 2011, up from $31.1 billion in 2010, according to Gartner, Inc. The market is forecast to total $38.3 billion in 2012, and surpass $49.1 billion in 2015.

"The security services market has changed rapidly over the last several years with a growing number of security technology providers offering their technologies as services, and customers often preferring services to save on operational costs while they consolidate resources to more strategic security related initiatives," said Lawrence Pingree, research director at Gartner.

The IT management segment of security services is forecast to grow from $8 billion to $14.9 billion in 2015 (see Table 1), almost doubling the size of the security services market for managed security using the outsourced management model.

"This is largely driven by organizations looking at managed security services (MSS) providers as a way to maximize resources and lower ongoing operating expenditures on security," Mr. Pingree said. "Demand in the small and medium business segments is also high as businesses continue looking to external parties to provide them with additional security expertise and resources that they may be lacking organizationally to help them make the right security decisions or provide security functions externally."

In Western Europe, spending is expected to reach $11.9 billion in 2012 and total $14.4 billion in 2015. Security services spending in Japan is projected to grow from $5.1 billion in 2012 to $5.9 billion in 2015. In Asia/Pacific, spending will total $4.7 billion in 2012 and total $7 billion in 2015.

"It is still very advantageous for smaller emerging vendors to maintain significant focus on North America, where there is a larger number of dollars at stake, and there is still positive growth," Mr. Pingree said. "We are encouraging these vendors to continue to invest in strategies to stay relevant in other emerging high growth markets as well. For the larger, more-established security services providers that already have an extensive North American presence, it may make the most sense to focus efforts on regions with higher growth rates and less overall services market revenue penetration."

Entrust Digital Certificates the Secret to Notarius' Success with Canada's Trusted Professional Organizations

Canadian technology vendor leverages Entrust digital certificates, PKI for key customer wins

DALLAS, Nov. 9, 2011 /CNW/ -- A respected Entrust Inc. customer since 1999, Canadian security vendor Notarius has finalized a digital signature agreement with the country's top professional organizations. Notarius now delivers trusted, Entrust-based digital signatures to 12 professional engineering associations -- varying from engineers, land surveyors, notaries and more -- representing close to 165,000 professionals across Canada.

"Digital certificates and signatures extend to solve many of our clients' security challenges and enable a transition toward greater efficiency," said Notarius Business Development Manager Charles Tremblay. "Powered by digital certificates from Entrust, we're able to provide true value to our customers across Canada."

The technological subsidiary of the Chambre des notaires du Quebec, Notarius' digital signature kits enable partner associations to establish an irrefutable link between its members and the electronic documents they produce. These signature kits provide non-repudiation and protect digital documents against any malicious alterations.

"As with many online processes, vetting and authenticating digital identities is of utmost importance, and this deployment allows these trusted professional organizations to achieve that goal," said Entrust President and CEO Bill Conner. "A valued customer for more than a decade, Notarius never fails to create innovative ways to package and deploy proven security software and technology across a wide region."

The digital signature kits -- powered by Entrust Authority Security Manager -- are leveraged by the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA); the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM); the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC); the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC); the Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC); the Ordre des architectes du Quebec (architects); the Ordre des geologues du Quebec (geologists); the Ordre des arpenteurs-geometres du Quebec (land surveyors); the Ordre des evaluateurs agrees du Quebec (certified appraisers); the Chambre des notaires du Quebec (CNQ); the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Quebec (professional technologists); and the Ordre des ingenieurs du Quebec (notaries).

Enabled by Entrust PKI technology, Notarius manages close to 8,000 digital certificates used to digitally sign electronic documents. This community of professionals is growing at a current pace of approximately 200 users per month and is ever-increasing. The digital signature toolkits enable secure PDF conversion, seamless PDF digital signature capabilities, print-to-PDF options and more depending on the specific needs of the association. The organizations found great value in the technology, enabling them to avoid the costly alternative of printing, physically signing, and manually handling, shipping and archiving critical documents and communications.

Entrust's first public key infrastructure -- the world's first commercially available PKI -- was released in 1994. Now in its eighth edition, the Entrust Authority public key infrastructure product portfolio is the industry's most relied-upon PKI solution.

By managing the full lifecycles of digital certificate-based identities, Entrust Authority PKI enables encryption, digital signature and certificate authentication capabilities to be consistently and transparently applied across a broad range of applications and platforms.

Notarius is a non-profit organization founded in 1996. An ISO 9001-certified technology vendor, Notarius leverages PKI technology to deliver secure digital signatures reflecting technological and professional standards of practice. Trusted, easy-to-use and reliable, the Notarius digital signature is the official digital seal/signature for members of 12 professional associations across Canada.
