Trend Micro Envisions Smart, Data-centric Security for the Post-PC Era

Trend Micro Envisions Smart, Data-centric Security for the Post-PC Era

A new security model driven by changing landscape

OTTAWA, ON and CUPERTINO, CA, Oct. 5, 2011 /CNW/ - Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704;TSE: 4704), a global cloud security leader, today unveiled the company's vision for a smarter security model.  This new model, released at the company's annual Insight event for the analyst community, is inspired by a changing security landscape now marked by data breaches, and the challenges generated by mobile devices, cloud implementations and targeted attacks.

Trend Micro CEO, Eva Chen, outlined her vision of the new model the core of which centers on a data-centric, anti-hacker framework:

  • Trend Micro plans to build trust within the post-PC landscape where data and devices are exposed and ubiquitous. The new security model puts the spotlight on data by integrating threat and data protection capabilities within a unified framework, ensuring visibility into who is accessing what data, when, where and how.
  • This new model updates and adds to the power of the Trend Micro™ Smart Protection Network™ infrastructure, which correlates data from more than 70 billion daily queries and has protected more than 130 million users since it was first unveiled in 2008. Customers of all sizes will continue to benefit from this real-time, cloud-based protection.
  • The security industry is at a crossroads, facing a complicated horizon that covers an escalation of targeted attacks against companies; growth in the use of unsecured personal mobile devices; and cloud implementations where data can be accessed anytime, anywhere. A bolder approach to security is needed within this new environment where users don't know who or what to trust.
  • Unlike traditional, perimeter-centric security, which assumed protectable boundaries surround critical data, the new model recognizes the level to which data is exposed and aims to rebuild lost confidence by shifting focus to the data itself.
  • Under this vision, the company will build upon the cloud-based security of the Smart Protection Network by adding two essential capabilities developed with the underlying principle that data needs to be protected wherever it travels and wherever it resides:
    • Smarter threat protection brings the power of Trend Micro's global, cloud-based detection and correlation technologies inside a customer's environment with newly-developed local threat intelligence throughout their network to identify and protect against targeted attacks.
    • Smarter data protection enables integrated data protection and contextual awareness throughout the organization to ensure the confidentiality and protection of valuable data across physical, virtual and cloud environments.

Trend Micro is delivering more adaptive and contextually-aware security that protects the data itself - whether on a device or server; at home or on the road; in physical, virtual or cloud environments -- and provides the intelligent integration and coordination required to manage, control and defend that data in real time.

Benefits for businesses and consumers

  • For businesses, Trend Micro's vision will mean better, faster threat protection; adaptive security that enables rather than hinders business productivity; and increased efficiency and manageability of their security, which leads to lower TCO. It means they can embrace the opportunities and advantages of cloud computing and consumerization with new confidence.
  • For consumers, Trend Micro will be better equipped to protect their digital life located on computers, smartphones, or smartpads. With security threats becoming more pervasive and cybercriminals targeting consumers on mobile devices or engaging with friends on social networking sites, consumers need smarter, more complete protection.

Supporting quotes:

Eva Chen, CEO, Trend Micro
"Stagnation is not an option in an industry where a multi-billion dollar cybercriminal enterprise works relentlessly to steal customers' data - and their trust. We need to continually innovate to stay ahead, and help our customers regain confidence as we deliver better security.  Three years ago, Trend Micro led the industry with the Smart Protection Network, which delivered security from the cloud.  Now, we are moving even further ahead in the face of advanced, multi-faceted, targeted attacks by leveraging our scalable cloud security advantage and customizing it for the data, infrastructure, devices and applications supporting the cloud journey."

Steve Quane, Chief Product Officer, Trend Micro
"This is a fundamental change in the approach to security for organizations who have relied on a perimeter-based network security model, and for consumers whose digital lives are increasingly mobile.  Our new data-centric framework takes into account the changes required to secure data in an accelerating cloud-dominated world."

Jim Short, General Manager Trend Canada
"Trend Micro solutions protect across physical, virtual and cloud environments in real time. In Canada and beyond, both our consumer and our enterprise customers in government and business will benefit from this savvy, data centric model."

New “Andromo” App Maker Creates Quality Android Apps In Minutes - FREE

New “Andromo” App Maker Creates Quality Android Apps In Minutes - FREE

www.andromo.com

(Winnipeg, Canada) – The market for apps that run on Android smartphones and
tablets  continues to grow significantly, with over 500,000 Android
smartphones activated every day. Current market research shows that Android
now holds the largest portion of the smartphone industry at 39 percent, even
surpassing Apple’s iOS which sits at 28 percent.

To address that huge market, Indigo Rose Software has launched the “Andromo
App Maker” for Android. Andromo is a free application that makes Android app
development quick and easy enough for anyone. Andromo uses a simple
point-and-click process designed to create professional Android apps in as
little as five minutes. Users are walked through the steps needed to
customize their app’s appearance and specify features and functions. Andromo
then builds a fully-functional, customized app ready to be uploaded to the
Android Market and promoted to millions of customers.

Andromo’s streamlined online app making process is quick and easy to use and
provides professional results. Users have full control over the appearance
of their apps from background colors, textures and graphics to the position
of text and icons on screen. Apps made with Andromo can open websites,
display graphics, and bring in blog posts, Twitter feeds, Facebook updates,
and more. Advanced activities are also possible, such as the ability to
embed websites and html pages directly into the app. Andromo was also
designed to be easily extended with new functions and activities as the
Android product and market expands in the months ahead.

“Most app creation software now on the market focuses on iPhone apps with
Android development as an afterthought,” says Indigo Rose Software President
Colin Adams. “Andromo apps look and feel like Android apps, not iPhone apps
or web sites.” Adams adds that with Andromo a user doesn’t have to be a
programmer or hire one to make an app. “We created a tool from the ground up
that was designed specifically for Android, the apps you create with Andromo
look and feel like the apps you see in the Android Market.” Adams says they
wanted to create something that anyone could use to make Android apps, not
just programmers. “We wanted something that could democratize app making,
like Blogger did for the web, without flooding the Android market with
poorly programmed apps. If you can use Blogger or Wordpress, you can use
Andromo.”

Symantec Unveils New Platform for Cloud Security at Vision Conference

Press Release

Symantec Unveils New Platform for Cloud Security at Vision Conference

BARCELONA, Spain – Symantec Vision 2011 – October 4, 2011 – Symantec Corp., (Nasdaq: SYMC) at its Vision Barcelona event today, provided customers and partners their first look at Symantec O3, a new cloud security platform designed to protect all enterprise cloud applications and cloud infrastructures. Symantec O3 combines access control, information protection and compliance control in a single security solution, allowing enterprise customers to extend their internal security policies to public and private cloud services.

Cloud computing is one of the most significant IT trends. Enterprise adoption of SaaS, public or private clouds promises to drive significant cost and complexity reduction. However, concerns over security, compliance and trust still represent a significant barrier to adoption. These new cloud platforms are not inherently insecure but comprehensive security and compliance solutions for the cloud are still missing.

Symantec O3 will help to fill that void by establishing a new security control point that applies consistent identity and information security across all cloud services. Symantec O3 provides three core security layers. The cloud access control layer leverages an enterprise existing identity infrastructure for authentication while enabling authorization and federation services. The information security layer builds on Symantec leading DLP and PGP encryption technologies to automatically detect, block and encrypt confidential information before it is stored in the cloud. Moreover, by virtue of being in line with all cloud traffic, the Symantec O3 visibility layer aggregates all cloud-related security events, to provide the foundation for a comprehensive cloud audit solution.

According to a recent Symantec survey, 44 percent of CEOs said they were cautious about moving business-critical applications to the cloud, with 76 percent citing security as a main concern1. Symantec O3 will give businesses the confidence to more rapidly shift enterprise resources to public and private clouds.

Symantec O3 is now in an early access beta program and is scheduled to be generally available in 2012. For more information, please visit: www.symantec.com/O3

Quotes

  • “As organizations work to embrace cloud delivered services, they struggle to balance the potential upside benefits against the many challenges created as their sensitive information flows between an increasing number of solution providers, over networks, through organizations and down to devices outside of their infrastructure. Symantec O3 will provide the visibility, control and protection they need to confidently embrace cloud computing.”

Protiviti Research Finds Most Companies Not Doing Enough to Manage IT Risks

Protiviti Research Finds Most Companies Not Doing Enough to Manage IT Risks

New Protiviti survey examines IT audit trends, gaps in global businesses

MENLO PARK, Calif., Oct. 3, 2011 /CNW/ -- Despite businesses' overwhelming reliance on technology and a continuing increase in information security breaches, a majority of companies still don't place enough emphasis on understanding and addressing their IT risks, according to a new survey from Protiviti (www.protiviti.com), a global consulting firm. Results from the firm's 2011 IT Audit Benchmarking Survey (www.protiviti.com/ITauditsurvey) reveal that many organizations, including one in four with revenues up to $1 billion, are not conducting any kind of IT risk assessment. In addition, 42 percent of organizations acknowledge there are specific parts of their IT audit plans that they cannot address sufficiently due to a lack of resources and expertise.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20111003/SF78762) (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090115/AQTH541LOGO)

Protiviti's inaugural IT Audit Benchmarking Survey, which includes input from nearly 500 executives and professionals worldwide including chief audit executives, audit directors, and IT audit directors and managers seeks to analyze some of the many underlying IT audit trends and gaps evident in organizations today. In addition to data and analysis, the survey report also includes key questions for audit professionals to consider as they evaluate their own IT audit functions.

"There are simply too many risks associated with the pervasive use of technology including social media and mobile devices and not enough focus on identifying and managing those risks," said Bob Hirth, Protiviti executive vice president and leader of the firm's global internal audit and financial controls practice. "Businesses have to get serious about addressing IT risks or they will fall victim to their own vulnerabilities. We hope that our survey data and insights will inspire organizations to take a hard look at the effectiveness of their IT audit function."

Key Survey Findings

According to the survey results, the growth and prevalence of technology throughout most organizations is outpacing the assessment, management and monitoring of related IT risks. Respondents revealed that their organizations often don't have the staff required to address the growing need appropriately.

Survey data also shows that the smaller the company, the less likely it is to have an IT audit function. For example, 43 percent of companies with less than $100 million in annual revenues have no such function. Even more notably, 82 percent of organizations with annual revenues of $100 million to $1 billion lack a designated IT audit director or someone in an equivalent position.

Other key findings include: -- Only 13 percent of companies in the $100 million - $1 billion revenue category, and 17 percent under $100 million, use outside auditors to help with IT audits. Higher percentages for both categories of companies would be expected because most of these companies do nothave full-time IT audit resources in place. -- Nearly 70 percent of North American companies and nearly 80 percent of EMEA/APAC companies have not completed an evaluation and assessment of their IT governance process (as outlined in The Institute of Internal Auditors Standard 2110.A2). Even more surprisingly, when asked if they intend to complete that assessment, 36 percent of North American companies and nearly 30 percent of EMEA/APAC companies said no. -- In 31 percent of EMEA/APAC companies and 29 percent of North American companies, line-of-business executives for example, chief information officers have little to no involvement with the IT risk assessment process, according to the survey. -- A majority of companies at the $1 billion - $5 billion level and those at greater than $5 billion are ensuring their IT audit staff members obtain more than 40 hours of training per year. However, 18 percent of respondents from EMEA/APAC organizations report that they do not provide IT skills training for IT audit staff. Additionally, 32 percent of all small companies (less than $100 million) and 20 percent of companies at the $100 million - $1 billion level provide no IT skills training for these staff members.

"If an organization or internal audit function is not thinking about IT governance, IT risks and specifically IT risk assessment, it should be," said David Brand, a Protiviti managing director and the firm's national IT audit leader. "The increased use of and demand for technology and data compel companies to review how these technologies are being leveraged and the risks they are creating."

Protiviti conducted the 2011 IT Audit Benchmarking Survey using both online and electronic surveys. Survey participants responded to more than 35 questions covering four categories: IT audit in relation to the internal audit department; IT risk assessment; audit plan; and skills and capabilities.

National Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) Careers Week - An exciting program to introduce young people to the different careers the field has to offer

National Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) Careers Week - An exciting program to introduce young people to the different careers the field has to offer

MONTREAL, Oct. 3, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - TECHNOCompétences, in partnership with the Canadian Coalition for Tomorrow's ICT Skills (CCICT) today unveiled its program for the Quebec component of National ICT Careers Week. The program runs throughout the month of October and will take two forms: classroom sessions and an interactive career show. Many dignitaries attended the launch, including the Deputy Premier and Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports, Line Beauchamp.

"This awareness-raising and educational campaign to promote ICT to young people and their parents will feature, among other things, practical, hands-on presentations that will demystify some of the lesser known jobs, and, above all, make ICT a sector of choice for our youth, thereby ensuring a quality workforce for the future of this strategic sector," remarked Deputy Premier and Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports, Line Beauchamp.

"TECHNOCompétences is pleased to present this exciting program to young people and in so doing, support succession development in this promising sector. Since 2005, promoting ICT careers has been central to our priorities. This is the driving force of many of our initiatives, among them, the MaCarrièreTECHNO.com campaign, which we have carried out with our ICT industry partners," said François Rainville, chair of the Board of TECHNOCompétences. "An important point to consider is that in Québec, over 184,000 people hold technology-related jobs. That means 4.3% of the labour force, and the numbers are steadily increasing. Another sign of technology's omnipresence is that over 55% of ICT professionals work in economic sectors other than those specifically related to ICT, for instance, banking, retail, insurance and avionics. So, the next generation has to be ready to step in!"

Widely known as a technology buff, the reporter, blogger and media personality Dominic Arpin is the spokesperson for National ICT Careers Week. He is already looking forward to meeting young people and introducing them to the myriad of fascinating and creative careers in this sector. "Whether it's in computing, multimedia, telecommunications or electronics, the choice is vast and this industry offers countless opportunities to pursue rewarding careers. More than ever before, young people have the chance to change the world in their own way. It's up to them to take advantage of all the opportunities on offer!"

A careers show like no other
On October 27, teenagers between 14 and 17 can visit Go Techno, a careers show being held at the Montréal Science Centre from 8:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. During this interactive career day, young people can find out about the full range of ICT careers and talk with people in the sector. Instead of listening to abstract presentations, they will be treated to a down-to-earth experience through practical demonstrations by 30 exhibitors and animations. The show features six theme areas, reflecting the great diversity and cross-cutting nature of ICT careers: health/beauty, multimedia/entertainment, mobile communications, transportation/aerospace, security/business and environment/energy. Doors will be open until 8 p.m. for young people who want to come with their parents.

By registering at one of the interactive terminals and answering three questions related to each of the theme areas they have visited, young people can win one of eight iPod nanos. They will also have a chance to win the grand prize: taking a friend to watch the shooting of Vlog, a program hosted by Dominic Arpin!

Classroom sessions to demystify techno careers
During the month of October, over 40 workshops by ICT professionals will be offered to schools in greater Montréal that have registered in the program. Designed for students in grades 9-11, the aim of the workshops is to demystify ICT, with a presentation by an ICT professional, a discussion with the students and a question period.

A freshly overhauled and updated website

HP Acquires Control of Autonomy Corporation plc

Positions HP as a leader in fast-growing enterprise information management and data market

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 3, 2011

HP today announced that it has acquired control of Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU. or AU.L).

Holders of 213,421,299 Autonomy shares have accepted HP’s previously announced offer to purchase the entire share capital of Autonomy at a price of £25.50 per share in cash, representing approximately 87.34 percent of the current issued share capital of Autonomy. As such, all conditions relating to the offer have now been satisfied, allowing HP to acquire control of Autonomy.

The acquisition positions HP as a leader in the large and growing enterprise information management space. Autonomy’s software offerings power more than 25,000 customer accounts worldwide and, as part of HP, will provide high-value business solutions to help customers manage the explosion of unstructured and structured information. Autonomy offers solutions that are complementary across HP’s enterprise offerings and strengthens the company’s data analytics, cloud, industry and workflow management capabilities.

“We are committed to helping our customers solve their toughest IT challenges. The exploding growth of unstructured and structured data and unlocking its value is the single largest opportunity for consumers, businesses and governments,” said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer. “Autonomy significantly increases our capabilities to manage and extract meaning from that data to drive insight, foresight and better decision making.”

As previously announced, Autonomy will operate as a separate business unit. Dr. Mike Lynch, the founder and chief executive officer of Autonomy, will continue to lead the Autonomy business and will report to Whitman.

“This is a historic day for Autonomy, our employees and the customers we serve, as we combine HP’s phenomenal assets and Autonomy’s specialized skills to produce systems that handle all the information in the enterprise, regardless of the format it is in,” said Lynch. “We are at the dawn of a new era when it is the ‘I’ in IT that is changing, not just the ‘T.’”

HP’s offer to purchase the remaining Autonomy shares remains open. Further information is available at www.hp.com/investor/offerdocuments.
