Dimension Data / Forrester Research news: survey finds desktop virtualization to surge in next two years

DESKTOP VIRTUALISATION APPROACHING TIPPING POINT
Organisations view investing in, or implementing desktop and application virtualisation as a high priority

NEW YORK – 14 September 2011 – Cost reduction, security, manageability and simplifying the migration to Windows 7 are driving organisations to adopt an aggressive deployment approach when it comes to desktop and application virtualisation.

This is one of the key findings in a commissioned study* conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Dimension Data, on the desktop virtualisation market. Over half of the 546 organisations surveyed ranked desktop and application virtualisation as a critical or major initiative over the next 12 to 18 months. Furthermore, deployment levels are predicted to grow from 27% to 46%, taking the number of virtual desktops in organisations from hundreds, to tens of thousands in the next two years.

Ettienne Reinecke, Dimension Data’s chief technology officer said, “While only 13% of respondents said they had completed their enterprise roll-out of Windows 7, organisations across all industries and geographies are prioritising their investments in desktop virtualisation. In addition, early adopters are now also emerging from regions other than the heavily regulated industries in North America and Western Europe.

Overall, 40% of organisations view investing in, or implementing desktop and application virtualisation as a high priority, while 12% believe this a critical priority over the next 12 to 18 months. However, organisations looking at desktop virtualisation as a silver bullet to address desktop challenges must first understand their business drivers, workforce demands and the state of their application ecosystems before defining their next-generation desktop roadmap.

“Typically, an organisation will start by piloting desktop or application virtualisation to a small group of users and then scale out deployments. The most successful deployments we’ve seen are those designed with workforce segmentation in mind, where the end result is a combination of traditional and virtual desktops that suits the end user’s requirements.”

Organisations are quickly realising the need to transform their desktop infrastructure. The focus on Windows 7 upgrades, the maturity of desktop and application virtualisation, coupled with business pressure to embrace the consumerisation of IT and bring-your-own-device policies, has created the perfect storm for organisations to modernise their desktop infrastructure.

However, Reinecke warns organisations against pursuing desktop virtualisation purely as a cost reduction tactic. “There’s a general misconception that a desktop virtualisation initiative will translate into immediate cost savings. This is underscored by the fact that 60% of the research participants cited cost saving as one of the main drivers for desktop virtualisation projects.

“Desktop virtualisation requires significant investment in the supporting network infrastructure, servers, storage upgrade and software licensing fees to ensure that the solution can effectively meet business and end user demands.”

Entrust Underscores Growing Demand for Mobile and Cloud-Based Credentials at International Civil Aviation Organization Symposium

Entrust Underscores Growing Demand for Mobile and Cloud-Based Credentials at International Civil Aviation Organization Symposium

Many countries seeking easier, faster, and more economic methods of securing credentials

DALLAS, Sept. 12, 2011 /CNW/ -- Entrust, Inc., a global leader in securing online identities and information, provided an update on the evolution of its ePassport technology and growing international interest in Cloud for PKI services and mobile-based border security solutions to the attendees and participants of the International Civil Aviation (ICAO) Seventh Symposium in Montreal this week.

In his presentation, "Trends in ePassport Trust," Entrust product marketing manager David Mahdi noted that while ePassport technology has been adopted by several nations around the world, many that have executed on ePassport programs still only rely on paper- based security features due to a lack of resources. "Without appropriately implemented interoperable PKI-based trust infrastructure and ICAO-compliant document verification, the investment in an ePassport solution is for naught," he said. A potential solution, Mahdi said, may come from cloud-based trusted PKI solutions that enable countries to better manage costs and system, while still providing the confidence in the country's ability to meet global border security standards.

Craig Delmage, Entrust Director, Government Affairs, also highlighted the trend toward mobile devices when he delivered his presentation entitled, "Global Travel Identity PKI: 2011 Update." Delmage highlighted that in 2012 we will continue to see rapidly increasing deployment of mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets integrated with PKI. "The tremendous explosion of commercial off the shelf mobile devices moving into the border security arena will ultimately result in better security, speedier border control services, and improved economies of scale," he said.

Entrust provides a hosted, PKI-based inspection service that can be seamlessly integrated with the ICAO PKD and domestic do-not-fly lists, and is compliant with ICAO and EU standards. The company is an industry leader in the issuance of ePassports and border security technology including advanced electronic machine-readable travel documents (eMRTD). Entrust technology is currently in use in a number of countries issuing a high volume of ePassports, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Singapore, Ireland, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, New Zealand, Canada and Finland.

The ICAO Symposium, Sept. 12- 15 at the organization's headquarters in Montreal, focused on a broad range of products and services related to MRTDs, biometric identification, travel document security applications and border inspection systems. Each year, the event attracts hundreds of participants from states, international organizations, security vendors and interested institutions.

Intel CEO Outlines Company's Plans to Lead Future of Computing

Intel CEO Outlines Company's Plans to Lead Future of Computing

Announces Joint Effort with Google* and Details Low Power Ultrabook™ Innovation

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, San Francisco, Sept. 13, 2011 – Intel Corporation today announced a new effort with Google* that aims to accelerate Intel's business in smartphones.

The company also revealed that Intel's engineers are working on a new class of platform power management for Ultrabooks™ that will aid in the delivery of always-on-always-connected computing.

Intel's President and CEO, Paul Otellini, made the announcements during the opening keynote of the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.

"Computing is in a constant state of evolution," said Otellini, describing the opportunities and challenges facing Intel and the industry. "The unprecedented demand for computing from the client devices to the cloud is creating significant opportunity for the industry. Intel is innovating and working with our partners to deliver computing experiences that are more mobile, secure and seamless. I'm excited about the new experiences that will be created across a range of devices, and we're just getting started. "

Growth in New Market Segments
Addressing a major corporate goal of growing Intel's business in adjacent computing market segments, Otellini discussed the company's recent efforts to accelerate its smartphone business and showcased a form factor reference design based on Intel® Atom™ processor, and running the Android™ platform.

Otellini then introduced Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google*. The two executives outlined plans to enable and optimize future releases of the Android™ platform for Intel's family of low power Intel® Atom™ processors. The joint effort is designed to speed time-to-market of Intel technology-based smartphones running the Android platform.

"Our collaboration with Google will bring a powerful new capability to market that helps accelerate industry innovation, adoption and choice," said Otellini. "I'm excited by the possibilities of this collaboration. It will enable our customers to bring exciting new products and user experiences to market that harness the combined potential of Intel architecture and the Android platform."

Today's announcement builds upon the two companies' recent joint initiatives to enable Intel architecture on Google products. Joint initiatives include Chrome OS, Google TV, and the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) and Native Development Kit (NDK).

Pushing the Limits of Low Power for Ultrabooks™ and Beyond
Otellini predicted that Ultrabook systems will provide the most satisfying and complete computing experience. The company is working with industry partners to deliver mainstream-priced products beginning this holiday season for this new category of lighter, sleeker compute companions.

Intel's CEO said the company's engineers will further accelerate Ultrabook innovation with Intel's "Ivy Bridge" 22nm technology early next year with the help of the company's revolutionary 3-D Tri-gate transistors.

He highlighted the broad enabling work between Intel and Microsoft, and pointed to the future opportunities that Windows 8 will present across tablets, hybrid devices and new form factors such as Ultrabooks™.

Otellini also described the new class of platform power management in development for the 2013 "Haswell" products for Ultrabooks. The advances in silicon technology and platform engineering are expected to reduce idle platform power by more than 20 times over current designs without compromising computing performance. Otellini said he expects that this design change, combined with industry collaboration, will lead to more than 10 days of connected standby battery life by 2013. The advancements will aid in delivery of always-on-always-connected computing where Ultrabooks stay connected when in standby mode, keeping the e-mail, social media and digital content up-to-date.

Looking further into the future, Otellini predicted that platform power innovation will reach levels that are difficult to imagine today. Intel's researchers have created a chip that could allow a computer to power up on a solar cell the size of a postage stamp. Referred to as a "Near Threshold Voltage Core," this Intel architecture research chip pushes the limits of transistor technology to tune power use to extremely low levels.

Securing the Next Billion Computing Devices
Otellini was joined on stage by Candace Worley, senior vice president and general manager, Endpoint Security  at McAfee. She discussed how Intel and McAfee have been working together on a range of innovative hardware assisted software security solutions.

The two executives reinforced the growing need for continued investment and innovation as billions of new computing devices are expected to connect to the Internet and with one another.

Worley introduced McAfee's new DeepSAFE technology platform that works with hardware capabilities found in the Intel® Core™ i3, i5 and i7 processors. DeepSAFE technology provides new levels of security and a different vantage point by operating below the operating system. This technology will launch in a McAfee enterprise product later this year.

Otellini announced that Intel is working with McAfee on a roadmap of security solutions that extend across the spectrum of computing from embedded devices to the cloud.

Seamless, Consistent, Interoperable Experiences
With computing continuing to evolve, Otellini emphasized the need for seamless, consistent and interoperable experiences across a variety of devices. To help support this vision, Intel is now building capabilities into a broad array of devices including Ultrabooks and all-in-one computers. Otellini demonstrated several new capabilities that will be available on Acer*, Lenovo*, and Toshiba* systems later this holiday season.

HP Ensures Delivery and Receipt of Critical Information for Businesses with HP Exstream 8.0

HP Ensures Delivery and Receipt of Critical Information for Businesses with HP Exstream 8.0

Customer communications management software helps make touch points more meaningful, personal and profitable

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 13, 2011 – HP today introduced HP Exstream 8.0, the latest version of its top-ranked customer communication management solution, enabling global enterprises to build loyalty and form long-lasting customer relationships, while helping to save costs annually and drive top-line revenue growth.

Unveiled at the HP Exstream User’s Conference, HP Exstream 8.0 now enables assured delivery and receipt of on-demand documents, electronic signatures for accelerated transactions and expanded multichannel capabilities.

“Leveraging the multichannel capabilities in HP Exstream 8.0, we are able to produce multiple communication outputs in a single call, which increases system response time, requires less development and allows us to support faster release schedules,” said Brandon Danner, application development analyst, Penn National Insurance. “Today our independent agents are using these documents to provide meaningful conversations to better explain coverage and pricing, increase referrals and boost response rates.”

Ensure electronic communications are delivered

As customers increasingly desire communications via electronic channels such as email and SMS, HP Exstream 8.0 now automatically provides delivery of a secondary communication – like a printed document – if the first delivery fails, through HP Exstream Delivery Manager. HP Exstream Delivery Manager also logs all delivery activity, enabling enterprises to track what communications were sent and to whom.

Enterprises can now encourage customers to choose communications in electronic formats and be assured the messages are delivered.

“With the proliferation of smartphones and other mobile devices, enterprises are seeking innovative ways to deliver personalized communications in the formats customers prefer,” said Avi Greenfield, product manager, Exstream, HP. “With a complete and intuitive communication solution like HP Exstream, enterprises can use a single platform to engage customers in meaningful ways and make every interaction more profitable.”

Rapidly integrate e-signatures into customer communications

HP Exstream 8.0 facilitates the addition of electronic signatures, increasing security and improving response times for critical customer communications. Rather than deliver documents via print channels and then waiting for customers to sign and fax or mail back, enterprises can deliver documents via the web or email, and enable customers to electronically sign contracts, agreements and other critical communications.

With the integration of electronic signatures into HP Exstream 8.0, enterprises can accelerate transactions and also track in real-time completed customer communications.

Customer communications via expanded electronic formats

HP Exstream 8.0 offers expanded HP Exstream Multichannel capabilities, delivering customer communications across multiple electronic channels including the web, SMS and email, while also providing personalized, real-time content for smartphone and tablet-based apps. This can generate new revenue opportunities, reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction.

Madison Advisors rated HP Exstream Multichannel delivery capabilities among the best of document composition technologies.(1)

Building upon the previous version, HP Exstream 8.0 also allows business users to:

Deliver better, faster customer responses. Using intelligent, interactive documents, businesses can quickly and easily follow up their one-on-one customer interactions with highly personalized communications.

Support complex multilanguage requirements. Meet global demand and domestic requirements in a single Unicode product with broad support for documents that use double-byte character sets (DBCS). Users can easily switch between language layers in interactive documents and language translations are aided by special user-interface views to provide communications in a customer’s preferred language.

Ease integration into IT environments. Simplify integration with business systems and enable rapid deployments into existing IT environments, including service-oriented architectures to acquire content, update systems or create documents in real time.

training and testing and incident response named key elements to better
defend against advanced threats and recover from inevitable
cyber-attacks.
* RSA commits to bring further education and dialogue with cyber
security, business and government leaders worldwide through series of
regional Advanced Threat Summits beginning Oct. 10, 2011,

BEDFORD, MA. – Sept. 13, 2011 – RSA, The Security Division of EMC
(NYSE: EMC) and TechAmerica today released key findings derived from a
forum of more than 100 of the world's top cyber security leaders from
government and business who met in Washington, DC to address the impact
of Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) as well as strategies for defense
and mitigation. Participants at the APT Summit shared threat
intelligence, defensive strategies and best practices for protecting
against the most menacing security threats targeting highly sensitive
information and intellectual property of governments and businesses.

“The frequency and volume of attacks has reached pandemic levels –
this is not a passing fad or anomaly,” said Eddie Schwartz, Chief
Security Officer of RSA, The Security Division of EMC. “The new fact
of life is a ‘state’ of persistent, dynamic, intelligent threat and
disruption, the economic and societal ramifications of which are
overwhelming. This doesn’t mean that we as a collective of security
professionals are powerless against our adversaries – we can and
should be able to manage our risk to an acceptable level and change the
ongoing and grim trends. Only through collaboration can we unite our
strategies to combat these advanced threats as we move forward together
in our pursuit of a trusted digital world.”

Distinguished attendees and speakers at the APT Summit included CISOs,
CIOs, technology Fellows and senior officials from leading think tanks,
industry associations, government, defense and law enforcement.
Attendees also represented numerous commercial industries including:
aerospace and defense, critical infrastructure, legal, finance, energy,
technology and manufacturing.

“We hear thatour nation’s defense secrets, financial security, and
critical infrastructure face significant risk by attackers far away and
hidden in obscurity behind the complex web of the internet. The cyber
security leaders gathered at the RSA-TechAmerica APT Summit understand
the gravity of these threats and have expressed their commitment to
working together to strengthen our defenses against those who are hard
at work trying to exploit any weakness they can find,” said Bill Boni,
Vice President and Corporate Information Security Officer of T-Mobile
USA who attended the APT Summit. “The findings from this event and the
promise to do more of these around the world should help open dialogue
and inspire innovation amongst cyber security leaders and professionals
across many sectors who refuse to be conquered by these threats.”

Summit attendees participated in multiple interactive sessions, which
yielded numerous ideas and perspectives that were collected and
synthesize
d into a 3-page key findings summary brief available today.
Some highlights of that document include:
* Organizations must learn to live in a state of compromise and should
plan and act as though they have already been breached, focusing on
closing the exposure window and limiting damage.
* Situational awareness is essential to detecting threats early and can
help improve security and attack response. Organizations can benefit
from advanced monitoring techniques and technologies, learning from
attacks against other companies and industries and sharing timely threat
intelligence.
* Attack vector has shifted from technology to people. Anyone can be
phished given the right context and the attackers have growing access
about would-be targets through social networking sites. While user
training alone cannot entirely neutralize the threat, training and
testing coupled with user restrictions and visibility can give
organizations a fighting chance.
* Attack customization defies traditional signature-based approaches to
work against a target’s specific weaknesses. Attackers are
increasingly agile and can take advantage of vulnerabilities more
quickly than signature-based approaches can remediate.
* Attackers are better at real-time intelligence sharing than targets
and fixing this should be a top priority. Attackers operate unimpeded by
legal restrictions and other rules that govern corporations and
government organizations. While not a panacea, information sharing of
real-time threat intelligence and attack information is of paramount
interest to give situational awareness used in helping defend critical
infrastructures and mitigate the effects of wide-scale cyber-attacks on
economic prosperity.
* Simplicity is the path to better security, and can be an effective
countermeasure to the many unmanageable and complicated IT
infrastructures in operation today. Given that security is a weakest
link problem, only through understanding assets, processes and endpoints
is there a chance at real defense.

An in-depth whitepaper on these findings will be published in October.

Regional summits announced

RSA also announced a series of regional Advanced Threat Summits this
fall to assemble senior security leaders and visionaries around the
world. The Summits are designed to surface the best strategies,
innovation and public policies that can help bring a collective benefit
to the cyber security ecosystem. The first regional Advanced Threat
Summit presented by RSA will take place Oct. 10 in London just prior to
the 2011 RSA Conference Europe.

“Through this series of regional summits, we are taking this
conversation to the front lines of American business and to
organizations worldwide that are dealing with or trying to protect
themselves against these threats. We intend to bring together leading
cyber security experts and senior-level practitioners who are passionate
about these issues – not just to re-imagine models for defense,
information exchange and industry alliance, but to make true progress
towards their implementation,” said Phil Bond, TechAmerica President
and CEO. “As a group we must not only raise awareness, we must also
lead.”

The Advanced Persistent Threats Summit summary findings can be found
at: www.rsa.com/summitresults. A schedule of upcoming regional Advanced
Threat Summits will be available soon.

Vanderwal will use his extensive management experience and leadership skills to drive continued revenue growth and oversee sales and partner programs in the region.

Vanderwal joins Veeam with more than 15 years of experience developing and implementing sales initiatives.  Most recently, he served as vice president of worldwide sales at BridgeWays, where he led a global sales team and developed a go-to-market strategy that helped BridgeWays grow from a startup company to an industry contender. Prior to BridgeWays, he spent five years at N-able Technologies as regional sales manager. During his tenure, the company grew from 20 to 150 employees, generated impressive revenue growth, and was named to Deloitte & Touche’s “Fast 50” companies for Canada. Since 2009, Veeam has achieved significant growth in the region, developed a comprehensive understanding of the Canadian market, and now works with more than 320 resellers and nearly 1,000 customers. Microsoft September 2011 Patch Tuesday - Info from Symantec

Today, Microsoft issued five security bulletins which addressed 15 vulnerabilities. None of this month’s vulnerabilities are rated critical by Microsoft.

“Although none of this month’s patches are rated critical, we strongly urge users to pay extra close attention to the Office Uninitialized Object Pointer Vulnerability,” said Joshua Talbot, security intelligence manager, Symantec Security Response. “It seems to be a fairly easy to exploit memory corruption issue and leverages extremely common Word files to attack users’ computers.”

“Microsoft is also patching two vulnerabilities that are already in the public realm, but neither are of too great a concern,” Talbot added. “The first is the HTML Sanitization Vulnerability, which is simply an information disclosure issue. The other is the Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability, which is part of the ongoing DLL issue that the company has been working on correcting for more than a year now. We’ve yet to see any exploits targeting one of these vulnerabilities.”

“Despite the number of patches Microsoft issued today, it’s important to not let the out of band advisory Microsoft updated last week slip through the cracks,” Talbot concluded. “The advisory essentially revokes Microsoft’s trust of various DigiNotar certificates. This update should probably be kept at the top of IT admins’ to-do lists – even before any of today’s patches – as there are attacks occurring in the wild leveraging the compromised certificates.”

Symantec strongly encourages users to patch their systems against all vulnerabilities addressed this month.

Please visit the Symantec Security Response blog for more information and also let me know if you’re interested in speaking with a Symantec expert in greater detail about any of the vulnerabilities addressed this month.
