Microsoft Reimagines Windows, Presents Windows 8 Developer Preview

Microsoft Reimagines Windows, Presents Windows 8 Developer Preview
BUILD conference attendees and developers get first access to new operating system.

LOS ANGELES Sept. 13, 2011 — Today at its developer-focused BUILD conference, Microsoft Corp. showcased a detailed preview of the next major release of Windows, code-named “Windows 8.” The company also detailed new tools for developers to help write applications for more than 1 billion people around the world who use Windows every day.

“We reimagined Windows,” said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft, in his keynote address to the thousands of developers in attendance. “From the chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise.”

The company also highlighted a variety of new features in Windows 8, including the following:

Touch-First User Interface

Metro style. Windows 8 introduces a new Metro style interface built for touch, which shows information important to you, embodies simplicity and gives you control. The Metro style UI is equally at home with a mouse and keyboard as well.

Touch-first browsing, not just browsing on a touch device. Providing a fast and fluid touch-browsing experience, Internet Explorer 10 puts sites at the center on new Windows 8 devices.

More Ways to Engage With Powerful, Connected Apps

Powered by apps. Metro style apps built for Windows 8 are the focal point of your experience, filling your entire screen so there are no distractions.

Apps can work together. Apps communicate with each other in Windows 8. For example, you can easily select and email photos from different places, such as Facebook, Flickr or on your hard drive.

Your experience syncs across your devices. Live roams all the content from the cloud services you use most — photos, email, calendar and contacts — keeping them up-to-date on your devices. With SkyDrive, you can access your files, photos and documents from virtually anywhere with any browser or with Metro style apps in Windows 8.

Enhanced Fundamentals

The best of Windows 7, only better. Windows 8 is built on the rock-solid foundation of Windows 7, delivering improvements in performance, security, privacy and system reliability. Windows 8 reduces the memory footprint needed — even on the lowest-end hardware — leaving more room for your apps.

Preserving power-user favorites and making them better. For those who push the limits of their PC, Windows 8 features an enhanced Task Manager and Windows Explorer and new, flexible options for multimonitor setups.

New Developer Opportunities

Windows Store. The Windows Store will allow developers to sell their apps anywhere Windows is sold worldwide, whether they’re creating new games or familiar productivity tools.

Build using more languages. Windows 8 lets you leverage your existing skills and code assets to create great experiences using the programming language you prefer.

Rich hardware integration leads to richer experiences particularly for games. DirectX 11 gaming power underlies Windows 8, allowing the easy creation of full-screen games with smooth, flicker-free action.

New Generation of Hardware

One Windows — many shapes and sizes. Support for ARM-based chipsets, x86 (as well as x32 and x64) devices, touch and sensors means Windows 8 works beautifully across a spectrum of devices, from 10-inch tablets and laptops to all-in-ones with 27-inch high-definition screens.

Always connected. With Windows 8, new ultrathin PCs and tablets turn on instantly, run all day on a single charge and stay connected to the Internet so your PC is ready when you are. Next-generation system on a chip (SoC) support will also enable greatly extended standby and low-power states.

Tap the full power of your PC. Windows 8 runs on PCs and is compatible with the devices and programs you use today on Windows 7, without compromise, to deliver the performance you expect of a PC.

Developers will be able to download the Windows Developer Preview via the new Windows Dev Center later this week. Webcasts of sessions will be posted on the BUILD site as well.

Gartner Says PC Shipments to Slow to 3.8 Percent Growth in 2011; Units to Increase 10.9 Percent in 2012

Gartner Says PC Shipments to Slow to 3.8 Percent Growth in 2011; Units to Increase 10.9 Percent in 2012

STAMFORD, Conn., September 8, 2011—

Worldwide PC unit growth is on pace to total 364 million units in 2011, a 3.8 percent increase from 2010, according to the latest preliminary forecast by Gartner, Inc. PC shipments are forecast to see better growth by the end 2012, when units are expected to reach 404 million units, a 10.9 percent increase from 2011.

PC unit growth for both 2011 and 2012 has been reduced from previous projections: from 9.3 percent growth for 2011 and from 12.8 percent growth for 2012. The notably lower outlook for 2011 PC growth is largely due to sharply downgraded forecasts for Western Europe and the United States in the second half of the year. The lower outlook for 2012 is the result of a weaker 2011, and also a slower start to 2012 — with an expectation for better growth in the second half of next year as economies stabilize and new mobile PC form factors enter the market. Even so, the slowdown in the market is notable: Total unit shipments in 2012 are expected to barely reach 400 million units, which was originally a target for 2011.

"Western Europe is not only struggling through excess PC inventory, but economic upheaval as well," said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner. "U.S. consumer PC shipments were much weaker than expected in the second quarter, and indications are that back-to-school PC sales are disappointing. An increasing pessimistic economic outlook is causing both consumer and business sentiment to deteriorate in both regions. We're expecting consumer spending to tighten in response. Business spending will also tighten, but less than the consumer space."

Gartner analysts said that while PCs remain important to consumers and businesses, purchases can be easily delayed, especially when there are complementary devices that are seen to be more attractive.

"More worrisome for the long term is that Generation Y has an altogether different view of client devices than older generations and are not buying PCs as their first, or necessarily main, device," Mr. Atwal said. "For older buyers, today's PCs are not a particularly compelling product, so they continue to extend lifetimes, as PC shops and IT departments repair rather than replace these systems."

"Media tablets have dramatically changed the dynamic of the PC market and HP's decision to rethink its PC strategy simply highlights the pressure that PC vendors are under to adapt to the new dynamic or abandon the market," said George Shiffler, research director at Gartner. "Vendors' tried and true business models are failing as traditional PC functionality is extended to other devices, and users continue to lengthen PC lifetimes. Vendors only seem to be flailing as they look for quick fixes to their problems. Unfortunately, the resulting chaos is just creating more confusion across the entire PC supply chain, impacting sell-in."

Note: Gartner's PC forecast does not include media tablets, which are forecast separately.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) September 12, 2011

Cartika recently launched its Canadian Cloud from within their NOC in Toronto, Canada. In addition to being able to deliver a 100% Canadian based Cloud solution, the Cartika Canadian Cloud boasts a revolutionary storage solution built on Open Standards and Open Source ZFS Storage Platforms.

Andrew Rouchotas, Cartika CEO recently stated "Our Cloud storage backbone differentiates us from all other Cloud providers available in Canada or the United States. We felt that building a solution on open standards and Open Source technology was the appropriate path to take. ZFS is simply the most powerful and resilient file system available and is the appropriate backbone for Cloud Computing platforms."

ZFS is a combined file system and logical volume manager designed by Sun Microsystems. The features of ZFS include data integrity verification against data corruption, support for near limitless storage capacities, integration of the concepts of filesystem and volume management, snapshots and copy-on-write clones, continuous integrity checking and automatic repair, RAID-Z and native NFSv4 ACLs. ZFS is implemented as open-source software, licensed under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL). The ZFS name is a trademark of Oracle.

Cartika has developed a Cloud storage platform to operate within the Oracle Open Standards and Open Source ZFS filesystems and logical volume managers. Using this technology, Cartika is able to deliver highly flexible and available storage systems which are resilient to corruption by perpetually self healing itself. Data is replicated automatically both onsite and offsite between its Canadian and US datacenters for the purposes of disaster recovery. Those wishing to opt out of cross border replication are able to do so.

Cartika has introduced several new concepts and key features to Cloud Computing and storage platforms:

  • Automatic replication not only locally, but, also offsite which is expected to be a stepping stone towards a fluid Cloud solution spanning multiple data centers.
  • The use of Commodity hardware for their Cloud storage backbone where data can be seamlessly replicated and activated on different hardware
  • Auto and continuous self healing of all data to ensure data integrity in all replicated copies of the data
  • Read and write SSD caching removing bottlenecks typically seen in SAN solutions and ultimately delivers SSD performance rates for all reads and writes regardless of what drives and drive speeds are found behind the cache
  • Using ZFS replication, Cartika is able to deliver a local storage based Private Clouds where Virtual Cloud instances are replicated across pools of local commodity types of servers

Norton to Deliver Personalized Security Service to Protect Consumers Across Multiple Devices

Norton One will be the security industry’s first customized, membership-based offering

TORONTO, ON. – Sept. 12, 2011 – Norton by Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced plans to deliver Norton One™, a personalized service that will protect consumers across multiple devices, give them the option to select a combination of solutions that work for them, and take away the hassle and worry of securing and maintaining today’s connected household. The service is expected to be available in the first half of 2012.

Today’s Internet-enabled household relies on multiple devices to communicate, work, shop and play. Norton market research has found that consumers in the U.S. have an average of 4.5 devices in their household between desktop computers, laptops, tablets, mobile phones and more. All these devices need protection against online threats, but protection today needs to provide more than just basic security and must cover the distinct needs of all the household’s connected devices.

Norton One will be the industry’s first membership-based offering spanning PC, Mac and mobile security solutions. It will provide a different security experience in the following ways:

  • One membership is all that’s needed to protect each connected device in the household, all managed from a single user interface.

New Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center Offers Management and Control of SSL Certificates

New Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center Offers Management

and Control of SSL Certificates

TORONTO, ON. – Sept. 12, 2011 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center, a cloud-based service for enterprises with large numbers of certificates used for business authentication and data encryption on servers. Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center discovers, centralizes, and provides in-depth insight through advanced reporting which enables organizations to proactively manage certificates from any Certificate Authority (CA). For the first time, enterprises have total visibility and control over their certificates, enabling them to reduce risk, costs and operational inefficiencies.

Managing Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates is critically important for enterprises and is becoming a larger challenge, especially due to the skyrocketing number of mobile and cloud-based applications and devices worldwide which are driving growing infrastructure needs. SSL Certificates enable the verification of business identity as extended to a server, and encrypt sensitive data traversing between a web application and a web browser among other extended applications.

Unfortunately, until now getting comprehensive information on all SSL certificates, regardless of CA, across complex enterprise networks has been expensive, time consuming and resource-intensive. SSL Certificates deployed on both internal and external customer-facing applications pose a management challenge and an expiration risk, so in both cases certificate expiration surprises or installation misconfiguration can cause substantial embarrassment, service disruptions, increased support costs and lost revenue.

Click to Tweet: Symantec helps large enterprises better manage SSL certificates through Certificate Intelligence Center: http://bit.ly/o1bTj2

Total Visibility into SSL Environment

Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center answers many enterprises’ call for an easily achievable central certificate data repository and an affordable, automated scanning service that provides timely and efficient discovery of certificate data across diverse networks. Highly optimized discovery capabilities, advanced notification and scheduling features and rich reporting functionality on the intelligence collected from the network encourage both proactive certificate management and peace of mind for enterprises.

Essential Business Continuity and Compliance

Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center automatically evaluates certificates nearing expiration and triggers alerts based on an administrator’s configurations. By vastly reducing the risk of unknown or unwanted certificates on enterprise networks, Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center minimizes costly surprise certificate expirations or high-risk rogue certificates, and thus helps ensure business continuity. Moving forward, Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center is expected to provide policy compliance checking to ensure enterprise certificates discovered meet internal or regulatory policies.

Improved Operational Efficiency

Centralization and automation are an improvement over current scattered and manual SSL accounting processes in spreadsheets, which historically have been error-prone, did not effectively track all certificates, and presented an additional time-consuming burden on already swamped IT staff. Data visibility frees IT staff to perform other core duties and actually save time through proactive management. Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center also aims to add relevant capabilities to its feature set around automating SSL renewal and installation on a number of enterprise applications to further reduce management overhead and allow IT administrators to focus on more important tasks.

Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center beta is available now. For more information, please visit: http://bit.ly/oVYur4

Quotes

·         “Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center illustrates Symantec’s commitment to helping enterprises get the most out of their SSL Certificate investments. Over the last year, this service was developed in consultation with more than 25 Fortune 500 and Global 1000 companies with the key goal to create a simple and usable solution to centralize certificate data and automate core lifecycle processes. Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center will make certificate management easier than ever—an important advantage as more enterprises adopt cloud-based certificate solutions to power the next generation of security applications.”
-- Fran Rosch, Vice President, Trust Services, Symantec Corp.

·         “Implementation of centralized policy controls for the lifecycle of SSL certificates and automation of certificate updates and maintenance can result in operational improvements, lower risk of service downtime as well as the ability to better identify rogue certificates. Organizations are already faced with the challenge of visibility into the existing estate of SSL certificates from multiple certificate authorities. This challenge will be further compounded as digital certificates for authentication and secure communications proliferate through adoption of cloud-based services, virtual machine sprawl and distribution of certificates to endpoints, particularly mobile endpoints. Cross-platform approaches, such as Symantec Certificate Intelligence Center, can provide the tools to tackle this challenge through greater degree of visibility into the state and distribution of certificates and by improving rates of automation.”
-- Steve Coplan, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Security Practice, the451 Group

Acision to Launch its Cloud Services Delivery Model for Mobile Operators

Acision to Launch its Cloud Services Delivery Model for Mobile Operators

Mobile data services leader to enable faster, cost effective delivery of innovative VAS from within the Cloud to increase revenue-earning potential for operators

FUTURECOM, SAO PAULO, Sept. 12, 2011 /CNW/ - Acision, a world leader in mobile data, today announced the first details of its Cloud Services Delivery Model, with solutions planned to be made available from October. Acision's new approach to deploying Software as a Service (SaaS) will enable mobile operators to quickly and cost effectively respond to rapidly changing technology developments and end user preferences, by having the ability to access and offer customers new value added services from the cloud while maximising their revenue-generating potential.

Analysts predict that the global market for Cloud Computing will grow to $82.9 billion by 2016(1) Visiongain 2011, and Acision's strategy is to ensure that operators around the globe can capitalise on this model by taking advantage of the latest, innovative mobile data services from within the cloud. By working with Acision, operators will be able to select services on demand from a central location, which connects to their existing network infrastructure, and deliver new, differentiating services faster while having the ability to scale and adapt to evolving market demands.

The Acision Cloud Delivery Model will leverage Acision's IPR. Initially, Acision will enable its already proven technology in the cloud including its enhanced Personalised Messaging services, such as group messaging, black and white listing, auto reply, auto signature and message copy. Acision has also developed a clear roadmap of services that will be launched over the coming months, ensuring the ability to continually add value through this innovative service delivery mechanism.

Jorgen Nilsson, Chief Executive at Acision, commented: "The growing importance and reliance on mobile data services powered by the soaring adoption of smartphones and faster data connections, means that operators are defining new strategies that ensure competitive differentiation in the mobile data ecosystem. By accessing services in the cloud, operators can maximise economies of scale and increase their revenue generating potential by bringing high value services to market much quicker than with traditional operator deployment models. In addition, the uncomplicated nature of accessing and delivering services in the cloud means that operators can easily trial services with earlier adopters before mass market launch, which is fundamentally more difficult on traditional delivery platforms.

"Acision's innovative solutions across messaging and data services are renowned for delivering new revenue streams for mobile operators globally, and the launch of our Cloud Services Delivery Model will provide additional high value to the core communication services operators have live today," concluded Nilsson.

For more information about Acision Cloud Delivery Model, please contact your local Acision representative.

·    Data Loss Prevention (DLP) – R75.20 further extends the Check Point DLP solution that now enables customers to protect against internal data leaks. R75.20 integrates with Microsoft Exchange, allowing businesses to inspect data sent within the organization to prevent data breaches that may occur between individuals or departments.

Check Point has also introduced two new high-end and data centre system offerings, including Check Point 61000 – a new carrier-grade security solution and the industry’s fastest security gateway – and a new data centre appliance, Check Point 21400. In addition, the company also introduced SecurityPower™, a new metric for security performance that allows customers to estimate their security needs and compare it to the SecurityPower Units (SPU) rating of each security solution.

The R75.20 software blade release continues to build on the Check Point’s 3D Security vision, defining security as a business process by combining policies, people and enforcement for stronger protection across all layers of security.

“The Internet has evolved dramatically and with it, so has malware – urging businesses to go beyond traditional methods of securing the Web,” said Paul Comessotti, Check Point’s Canadian Regional Director. “Our URL Filtering solution provides a unique approach to Web control by integrating with Application Control. Organizations now have the ability to control access to millions of websites, applications and widgets with a single, unified policy. For the first time in the industry, companies have the breadth and depth needed in a complete Web control solution.”

The new integrated URL Filtering solution provides customers with a comprehensive approach to Web control and leverages Check Point’s unique UserCheck™ technology that alerts and educates employees about corporate policies, while enabling them to access websites and use Internet applications when needed. Securing the Web today means more than controlling access to sites, such as Facebook, YouTube or Yahoo!. Organizations want to give employees access for business use, while also controlling web usage for privacy regulations, security, bandwidth and productivity reasons. With Check Point’s integrated solution, companies can easily control access to URLs, as well as applications and widgets within those sites – such as gaming, instant messaging or streaming media – that can expose the network to malware or inhibit business productivity.

“We see a real benefit to combining URL Filtering with our existing Application Control and firewall, greatly increasing the capabilities of an already robust filtering and policy solution,” said Dan Siff, director of information security at Colby College. “In addition to strengthening Web control, the Check Point Software Blade Architecture has helped us decrease network downtime and complexity, while simultaneously reducing total cost of ownership.”

As part of the new release, R75.20 enables customers to leverage Check Point’s comprehensive SSL inspection technology to enforce corporate policies across encrypted channels – such as Gmail, eBay and PayPal. With this new functionality, customers can better enforce corporate security policies, while still protecting employee privacy on sites such as online banking or healthcare. Check Point’s SSL inspection technology is available across all software blades, including DLP, IPS, Application Control, Antivirus and Anti-malware and URL Filtering.

Comprehensive data security and user awareness are important factors to safeguard critical business information. While traditional DLP solutions only monitor external content, R75.20 extends Check Point’s DLP Software Blade capabilities, now allowing inspection and control of sensitive emails between departments through Microsoft Exchange integration – ensuring sensitive information, such as employee personal records and company intellectual property – only remain accessible to designated individuals or departments.

“What we consistently hear from businesses is the need for more security that can withstand the evolving threat landscape, without adding complexity. At Check Point, we strive to deliver the most advanced security solutions that can be deployed in a simple, cost-effective way. Organizations moving towards a next-generation firewall will find it easy to create their security blueprint with a single, unified solution,” concluded Comessotti.
