ARMONK, N.Y., Sept. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced a definitive agreement to acquire Algorithmics for $387 million, subject to price adjustments at closing. Algorithmics is a risk analytics firm with operations in Toronto, Canada.  The company's risk analytics software, content and advisory services are used by banks, investment and insurance businesses to help assess risk, address regulatory requirements and make more insightful business decisions. Algorithmics is a member of Fitch Group, which is majority owned by Fimalac, a holding company based in Paris.

This acquisition expands IBM's business analytics capabilities in the financial services industry by helping clients quantify, manage and optimize their risk exposure across a range of financial risk domains including market, liquidity, credit, operational and insurance risk as well as economic and regulatory capital risk.

In a recent IBM Institute of Business Value survey of 1,900 global CFOs, nearly half indicated that their finance organizations are not effective in the areas of strategy, information integration, risk and opportunity management.  The roles of financial officers across all industries are evolving -- drawing them into more frequent boardroom conversations about forecasts, profitability and exposure to risks. The survey found that the importance of integrating information has more than doubled, mirroring the exponential rise in information volume and velocity within businesses today. Financial officers are becoming more involved in mitigating corporate risk in all its many forms – whether strategic, operational, legal or environmental.

Across the financial industry, integrated risk management continues to be a challenge -- made even more pressing by regulations triggered in response to the global financial crisis. Financial practitioners are tasked with making split-second decisions by analyzing activity happening both within their corporations and in the marketplace. With the combination of IBM and Algorithmics' analytics technologies, companies can measure and assess operational risk associated with lending processes, market and credit risk exposures.  Having this type of transparency and granular insight of financial risk in advance can help organizations meet new regulatory requirements.

More than 350 clients, including 25 of the top 30 banks and more than two-thirds of the CRO Forum of leading insurers, use Algorithmics' analytics software and advisory services. Clients include The Allianz Group, BlueCrest, HSBC, Nedbank, Nomura, Societe Generale, and Scotia Capital.

"Today's economic environment demands that financial institutions have more cash on hand, a better understanding of their financial standing and the ability to deliver more transparency to stakeholders," said Rob Ashe, general manager, business analytics, IBM. "Combining Algorithmics' expertise with IBM's deep analytics portfolio will allow clients to take a more holistic approach to managing risk and responding to economic change across their enterprises."

IBM's agreement with Algorithmics demonstrates that companies are looking to integrate independent silos to gain an enterprise-wide view of risks for strategic planning, operations and new growth opportunities.

"It is increasingly important to deliver integrated solutions that provide an understanding of risk and enable effective decision support while meeting rapidly evolving regulatory requirements," said Michael Zerbs, president and chief operating officer, Algorithmics.  "The need to have the right information at the right time is fundamental to developing and managing business strategies. The combination of Algorithmics' thought leadership, technology, content and services and IBM's globally recognized analytics business will help a broader group of clients improve their business performance based on a deeper understanding of risk."

Algorithmics' risk analytics software and services, together with technologies IBM acquired from OpenPages   and its recent investments in predictive analytics will provide clients with the broadest range of business analytics solutions.

Algorithmics' risk advisers will enhance IBM's Business Analytics and Optimization practice. The Business Analytics and Optimization team has more than 8,000 consultants including 200 mathematicians with more than 500 patents and a network of analytics solution centers, backed by an overall investment of more than $14 billion in acquisitions in the last five years. Algorithmics' focus on credit, market and liquidity risk, as well as key customers in operational risk, will strengthen and expand IBM's risk consulting services.

The acquisition is subject to applicable regulatory clearances and other customary closing conditions. With the closing of this acquisition, approximately 900 Algorithmics employees will join IBM's Software Group.

Trend Micro Canada offers Five Top Back to School Internet Safety Tips

Trend Micro Canada offers Five Top Back to School Internet Safety Tips

OTTAWA, Sept. 1, 2011 /CNW/ - With summer drawing to a close and a new school year about to begin, the Trend Micro team in Ottawa offers some quick and easy ways to help your family stay on top of Internet safety.

"With all members of the family spending more time online for both school and fun, there are more opportunities to encounter spam, scams, spyware, viruses, and other Web threats," said Ian Gordon, Trend Micro Canada Chief of Marketing and Channel. "While common sense and caution are the best ways to protect your family's life on line, it also helps to keep your Internet security software up-to-date."

  1. New school year = New passwords
After a summer of increased web surfing, start the school year with new secure passwords. Frequent password changes deceases the chances of financial and social networking accounts being hacked.
  2. Have the talk about online safety. Again
Talk about the importance of not sharing personal details online such as name, address, phone number, age, passwords or log on information. Even the most cynical of teens will get the message through this light but powerful (and safe to click on) video on the topic: The Wrong Hands.
  3. Be careful where you click
Prevent your devices from being infected with malware and other uninvited viruses.  Teach your kids to be wary of unexpected or strange looking emails.  Never open attachments from strangers or click on links from these emails.
  4. Keep software security up-to-date
Make sure you have installed up-to-date security software to protect your family and all devices from smart phones, to laptops and desktop computers from viruses, spyware, and spam.
  5. Keep the off line communication lines open
Encourage your children to think critically about what they see and read on line rather then assuming it is all true or accurate. Encourage your kids to come to you if they come across content that is upsetting to them in anyway.

Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704;TSE: 4704), a global cloud security leader, creates a world safe for exchanging digital information with its Internet content security and threat management solutions for businesses and consumers.  A pioneer in server security with over 20 years' experience, we deliver top-ranked client, server and cloud-based security that fits our customers' and partners' needs, stops new threats faster, and protects data in physical, virtualized and cloud environments.

Business decision makers at large and very large companies state that key features including password recovery/enforcement, phone autolock, remote track/wipe and sandboxing range in importance from 35 per cent to 50 per cent as 'must have' and 'highly appealing' requirements. Motorola ATRIX 4G ensures the IT department can deliver on access and control, with new password recovery and SD card encryption functions, among other security features.

From an employee perspective, smartphone business users listed apps in the top five important criteria, showcasing the desire to use their mobile devices for business and pleasure. Motorola ATRIX 4G satisfies these business and personal requirements and makes the best Android smartphone choice.

Brocade and Avnet Technology Solutions Bring Simplified Server and Desktop Virtualization Solutions to the Channel Through the Brocade

Brocade and Avnet Technology Solutions Bring Simplified Server and Desktop Virtualization Solutions to the Channel Through the Brocade CloudPlex Architecture
Integrated Solutions Provide Open, Validated Virtualization Stacks

LAS VEGAS, NV, Aug 30, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- VMworld 2011 -- Brocade /quotes/zigman/106821/quotes/nls/brcd BRCD +0.26% and Avnet Technology Solutions, the global IT solutions distribution leader and operating group of Avnet, Inc. /quotes/zigman/218726/quotes/nls/avt AVT -0.92% , today announced the joint development of marketing and enablement support for a new set of multi-vendor, pre-tested and configured virtualization solutions to help reseller partners in the U.S. and Canada design and deploy open, efficient and scalable virtualization solutions.

This joint effort will focus on building virtual compute blocks, which are integrated, tested and validated solution bundles comprised of server, virtualization, networking and storage resources and an integral element of the Brocade(R) CloudPlex(TM) architecture. This open, extensible architectural framework will help end-user organizations and solutions integrators build the next generation of distributed and virtualized data centers in a simple, evolutionary way. Avnet will be providing integration services for these solutions, as well as other channel enablement and sales support.

At VMworld, Brocade will be introducing the first success of its joint development efforts with Avnet: a reference architecture and validated solution designed to cost effectively scale virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments to support thousands of clients (or desktops) per solution bundle. VDI technology offers IT managers a simple and highly effective way to manage operating system and application updates throughout their enterprise, one of the most complex and time-consuming tasks they face in today's highly distributed and mobile computing model.

However, to scale properly, enterprise-wide VDI deployments should be built on top of an open, multi-vendor-based architecture that can scale easily and quickly migrate desktops and user data between data centers when needed, all while simplifying the management and configuration processes.

Specifically, this new set of virtualization solutions will incorporate Brocade and VMware networking and hypervisor technologies in conjunction with a number of compute and storage platforms. All virtualization solutions are qualified through a multistage validation process conducted by Brocade and Avnet, enabling value-added reseller and solutions integrator partners to deploy these solutions with confidence and the assurance of interoperability.

"The collaboration between Brocade and Avnet brings forth best-in-class virtualization solutions designed to address the challenges facing resellers and their end customers today," said Barbara Spicek, vice president of Global Channels at Brocade. "This joint effort underscores Brocade's belief that multi-vendor technology integration must take place in the channel. Whether it be through a world-class distributor like Avnet whose integration capabilities are second to none, or via a reseller that specializes in virtualization and cloud technologies, the channel is where the 'rubber meets the road.' Recognizing this, Brocade is committed to working with channel partners to deliver viable, compelling technology offerings that arm resellers with what they need to remain differentiated in an increasingly competitive marketplace."

As the use of virtualization technology becomes increasingly prevalent, end customers are looking to the reseller community to provide the guidance and expertise on how best to deploy and integrate virtualization technology into their operations. The creation of fully validated, pre-configured, open standards-based virtualization technologies presents an attractive value proposition to resellers looking to quickly and seamlessly implement these solutions in multi-vendor IT environments. In addition, resellers will benefit from the technical know-how and enablement resources available through Avnet's data center services offerings.

"While virtualization and cloud computing presents a world of opportunities to reseller partners, it also introduces new levels of complexity into their business and operations," said Scott Look, vice president and general manager of the Technology Infrastructure Solutions Group at Avnet Technology Solutions, Americas. "At Avnet, we are committed to fully supporting our reseller partners and have evolved our business to be able to meet their changing needs through vertical industry-focused integration services, partner enablement programs and go-to-market assistance."

In addition, Avnet's SolutionsPath(R) methodology provides resellers a wide range of tools to help them gain relevant technical skills and develop specialized solution-selling capabilities in vertical and technology markets. Avnet's SolutionsPath includes data center technology practices around mobility, networking, security, storage and virtualization, along with vertical market practices for the energy, finance, government, healthcare and retail industries. Avnet resellers also have access to value-added supplemental resources, such as hosting live, online demonstrations from virtually anywhere by connecting to the Avnet Global Solutions Center in Phoenix, Ariz.

Earlier this year, Brocade and Avnet introduced Avnet Accelerator, an invitation-only program designed to help resellers tap into the power of Ethernet fabric technologies to assist their customers in simplifying their network architectures and managing the growth of server virtualization and virtual machines inside their data centers. Today's announcement provides yet another opportunity for resellers to capitalize on the sale and deployment of virtualization solutions.

Availability and Additional Details

The Brocade/VMware VDI solution will be available to U.S. and Canada resellers through Avnet this November. Additional multi-vendor, open standards-based virtualization solutions will be available in the following months.

Tweet This: @Dell announces its first public #cloud - #VMware #vCloud Datacenter Service http://dell.to/qoxV7e

Today at VMworld® 2011, Dell and VMware™ jointly announced the availability of the Dell Cloud based on VMware vCloud® Datacenter Services designed to provide a seamless multi-tenant environment for running virtual systems. Dell is one of the first providers authorized to provide VMware vCloud Datacenter Services for enterprise-class, secure, public, private and hybrid clouds.

Today’s announcement is the first public and hybrid cloud offering by Dell and supports Dell’s strategy to provide customers next-generation computing solutions composed of hardware, software and services. Dell will also offer consulting, application and infrastructure services to help companies transform their legacy IT environment and integrate these cloud services effectively in their business.

Dell and VMware will provide Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) choice for customer organizations, hosting and outsourcing firms, system integrators and service providers. The offer provides automation, multi-level security and availability in order to manage on-demand capacity, workload scalability, or as a platform to respond to changing business needs more rapidly.

To address one of the greatest concerns customers have with cloud implementations, Dell delivers a complete, multi-layer enterprise security solution. Through the acquisition of SecureWorks and strategic partnerships with VMware and Trend Micro, Dell’s top priority is securing critical IT assets for the customer through the multi-layer provisioning of services. Dell protects the datacenter’s infrastructure through the management and monitoring of network firewalls, web application firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and vulnerability scanning. Virtual datacenters are also protected with security boundaries allocated to specific organizations. Log monitoring and reporting provides visibility into relevant security controls to help customers demonstrate compliance with industry standards.

Dell powers many of today’s top global search engines and largest web sites. In addition, Dell has one of the largest install bases of VMware customers and is very well positioned to offer comprehensive support from the datacenter to the cloud for VMware environments.

Dell Cloud with VMware vCloud Datacenter Services includes several options for customers:

  • Public - Dell Cloud with VMware vCloud Datacenter Service is an enterprise-class, secure offer of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS) hosted in a secure Dell datacenter. This service provides access to vCPUs, memory, storage networks, IP addresses, firewalls, and catalog capabilities.
  • Private – Utilizing the same expertise, service and technology delivered in its own datacenters, Dell will build private clouds at either our customer’s datacenter or Dell datacenters leveraging VMware offerings including VMware vSphere® and VMware vCloud Director™ as well as Dell’s vStart offering.
  • Hybrid - Dell and VMware provide a single source to substantially simplify the management of customers’ physical and VMware vSphere-based virtual data center infrastructure adding flexibility to customer requirements. Utilizing VMware vCloud Connector, the hybrid cloud solution provides management of on- or off-premise private cloud and Dell’s Public cloud offering.

In keeping with Dell’s principles of open, capable and affordable, the cloud offering is based on open standards and interoperable technologies that enable the seamless portability of workloads between public and private clouds. This offering is optimized to IT outsourcing capabilities for customers wanting to leverage their standardized VMware data centers to achieve greater business transformation results at lower costs.

This is the first offering of Dell’s cloud vision that is based on providing next generation end-to-end solutions to address customers’ requirements.

Solution Availability and Beta Program

Dell is currently offering the Dell Cloud with VMware vCloud Datacenter Service with beta customers. The offering will be generally available in the U.S. in the fourth calendar quarter this year with rollout planned for EMEA and APJ in 2012.

Partnership

Dell and VMware have enjoyed a strong and strategic relationship for almost 10 years. Dell is one of the largest VMware resellers in the world and the companies’ combined products are used worldwide to help organizations drive efficiency. VMware hypervisors are certified as a component of Dell’s converged infrastructure offering, vStart, and can be managed by Dell’s Advanced Infrastructure Manager offering, which enables businesses to manage physical and virtual resources from a single console.

Mobile Clinical Computing

Also at VMworld 2011, Dell is announcing that its Mobile Clinical Computing (MCC) is now certified under the VMware Ready™ Desktop Solutions program. The MCC solution builds on Dell Desktop Virtual Solutions architecture adding tools, features and services designed to enhance clinical workflow by simplifying doctor and nurse access to critical patient care applications and information. VMware View™ centralizes clinical desktops and point-of-care applications into the private cloud or datacenter enabling them to be delivered as a secure managed service to any qualified end point device. This increases security, simplifies desktop management and increases the level of availability of clinical desktops for Dell’s MCC customers. Hospitals that have implemented MCC are reclaiming thousands of hours a year per clinician for patient care thanks to the solution’s robust clinical efficiency features that streamline authentication procedures, enable workstation sharing, provide persistent compute sessions despite location changes and, ultimately, reduce the number of clicks and the amount of time it takes for clinicians to access information they need for their jobs. For IT departments, MCC simplifies the configuration, deployment and management of client systems, virtually eliminating the need for time-consuming desk-side or bed-side support. MCC is being demonstrated at Dell’s VMworld Booth #901 and is being presented at Dell’s VMworld Booth #901 at 10:45 am on Tues., Aug. 30 and 12:15 pm on Wed., Aug. 31.

Symantec Backup Exec 2010 V-Ray Update Delivers First Predictive Recovery for VMware

TORONTO, ON – VMworld 2011 – Aug. 30, 2011 – Today at VMworld® 2011, Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced new V-Ray technology enhancements to Backup Exec 2010 to provide organizations with greater visibility into their physical and virtual environment with a single backup solution, saving time and reducing overall complexity.  The latest version of Backup Exec 2010 will support VMware’s upcoming release of VMware vSphere® 5 and integrates with Symantec ApplicationHA to predict and trigger an application restore if ApplicationHA is unable to remediate an application failure.  This first-to-market integration helps IT administrators feel confident in expanding their VMware adoption knowing they can now eliminate costly downtime of mission critical applications within virtual environments.  Backup Exec’s V-Ray technology also includes the new virtual machine validator feature to allow administrators to easily resolve backup issues by validating the recoverability of VMware backups through integration with the VMware vCenter™ Server administration console.

“When it comes to backup, businesses must standardize on one product for physical and virtual protection if they seek the greatest storage savings and the least amount of management. Backup Exec V-Ray update provides new predictive VMware recovery, integrated deduplication and automated backup protection of new guest machines to help customers increase cost savings while eliminating downtime,” said Amit Walia, vice president of product management for Backup Exec, Symantec Corp.  “Now with integrated VMware recovery powered by ApplicationHA, Backup Exec opens the floodgates for more critical systems to be virtualized.”

Overall Backup Exec’s embedded V-Ray technology provides backup and virtualization administrators with a simpler data and application recovery process.  The new Backup Exec V-Ray features give administrators a clear catalog view of their backups so they can then select an entire backup set or a single object to restore from either their physical or virtual environments.  Backup Exec’s first predictive recovery feature, powered by  Symantec ApplicationHA helps reduce downtime of tier one mission-critical applications in VMware environments, and also provides new recovery validation and broad platform and application support for the upcoming VMware environment – vSphere 5.

“Symantec’s V-Ray technology provides our joint customers with across-the-board integration and the ability to view deep inside their virtual machine for optimized backup, security and availability of VMware,” said Parag Patel, vice president, Global Strategic Alliances, VMware.  “Symantec’s latest Backup Exec V-Ray updates provide significant operational and technical benefits and helps ensure that users will not have to run separate solutions for physical and virtual backups – ultimately helping to accelerate virtualization and cloud adoption without reinventing backup.”

Backup Exec 2010 is VMware Ready™ and provides innovative backup and recovery features to protect VMware environments:

  • NEW VMware vSphere 5 support, upon its release allows Backup Exec to provide broad platform and application support including protection for the latest VMware environment.
  • NEW Backup Exec predictive recovery automatically triggers an application restore with Backup Exec for any applications it is monitoring and unable to remediate failure.  Symantec Backup Exec integrated with Symantec ApplicationHA can be managed through VMware vCenter Server.
  • NEW V-Ray Virtual Machine Validator enables the Backup Exec destination to power-on a virtual machine directly from the backup to certify recoverability through VMware vCenter Server.
  • V-Ray visibility enables deduplication all the way to the source and across physical and virtual environment for leading storage savings.
  • Patent pending V-Ray with Granular Recovery Technology allows administrators to quickly find and restore objects inside Exchange, SQL and Active Directory in a simple process.
  • Backup Exec V-Ray visibility can automatically identify and backup new machines added to a VMware environment.
  • Backup Exec provides broad disk and tape support for storage infrastructures though one console.
