by Techvibes Newsdesk on 8/15/11

Ottawa's Ideavibes has announced that Expansion Bridge Mexico will be joining them as an Integration Partner for the Ideavibes Engagement Platform. Expansion Bridge will focus on capacity building in the area of engagement and open innovation for governments and corporations throughout Mexico and Latin America.

“We have seen an increasing demand from in Latin America from both companies and governments looking for an engagement platform that focuses on innovation and engagement and is tightly integrated with popular social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook," said Paul Dombowsky, Founder and CEO of Ideavibes. "Ideavibes is well positioned for growth in Latin America through this strong partner that understands the market and how best to capitalize on this growth. Early on we see demand from cities from all over the world looking for the tools to go beyond what surveys or public consultations can do. Making sure a broad spectrum of voices is heard, whether you are a brand or a city/state government, is important. Our platform focuses on enabling participation from as diverse a crowd as possible on any issue.”

According to Francisco Valverde, VP of Social Platforms of Expansion Bridge Mexico, there are few options for platforms in Spanish focused on open innovation, crowdsourcing or citizen engagement. “We are pleased to join Ideavibes as a Integration Partner and plan on implementing the new Spanish version of their platform to help our clients in Mexico and Latin America. We work with many brands, City and State Governments, and other public institutions to help them use consultation and innovation to build better products, deliver open government, and provide mechanisms for useful citizen engagement.”

The Ideavibes Crowd Engagement Platform enables organizations to create crowdsourcing or crowdfunding initiatives to solicit engagement from the community or crowd or market, and use this engagement and the ability to post, vote, and comment on ideas to come up with crowd-driven ideas that make change happen.

Ideavibes has implemented their Crowd Engagement Platform in cities such as San Francisco and Calgary. The patform is also the backbone for the recently launched Fundchange crowdfunding initiative sponsored by Vancouver-based Telus.

General Mills Builds E-Commerce Site on Windows Azure to Promote Gluten-Free Lifestyle

News Press Release
General Mills Builds E-Commerce Site on Windows Azure to Promote Gluten-Free Lifestyle
Cloud-based, direct-to-consumer channel provides consumers an easy way to find and shop for gluten-free products and information.

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 15, 2011 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that General Mills Inc. has built a direct-to-consumer online channel, called Gluten Freely, based on the Windows Azure platform. Designed to help consumers who have Celiac disease or are sensitive to gluten, a protein naturally found in certain grains, the website helps people locate and shop for gluten-free foods and provides diet and health information.

“We needed to build an e-commerce solution without incurring the costs and maintenance of a traditional on-premises platform,” said Dom Alcocer, marketing manager at General Mills. “Gluten Freely was brought to market about twice as fast and at about half the cost of what we were expecting from a traditional IT development.”

Recognizing the growing importance of meeting the needs of consumers who need to remove gluten from their diet, General Mills began making a range of gluten-free food products beginning with Rice Chex cereal in 2008. The company looked for a focused way to direct its products and information to the public while avoiding the burden of investing in traditional hardware and software IT resources.

Using Windows Azure as a platform, General Mills was able to build a direct-to-consumer online channel in the cloud. So far, the company has experienced substantial site traffic, sales, consumer enthusiasm and positive social media feedback, including more than 90,000 Facebook fans.

“General Mills is excelling at developing innovative business models, and we enjoyed supporting the company’s effort to build a brand-new business solution in the cloud,” said Mark Hindsbo, vice president U.S. Developer and Platform Evangelism at Microsoft. “Windows Azure was just right for Gluten Freely: a scalable and comprehensive platform that was flexible and cost-effective.”

More information about how Windows Azure helped General Mills build its new e-commerce channel is available in a case study at http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?CaseStudyID=4000010724. More information about Windows Azure is available at http://www.WindowsAzure.com.

The City of Calgary to launch first search-based website in Canada

The City of Calgary to launch first search-based website in Canada

CALGARY, Aug. 15, 2011 /CNW/ - To view the Social Media Release, click here: http://smr.newswire.ca/en/city-of-calgary/city-of-calgary-1st-search-based-website-canada

Following a successful preview, The City of Calgary today announced the official launch of the new search-based calgary.ca.

The website, which uses Microsoft SharePoint and Google search technology, was available for public preview from August 8 to 12. During the preview process, Calgarians were able to test the new site by typing in keywords to find relevant information. Public feedback during the preview process was exceptionally favourable with very few problems reported.

"We were incredibly impressed with the amount of feedback we received. Comments on social media indicated this was a move in the right direction for the City of Calgary" said David Watson, General Manager of Planning, Development and Assessment and Project Sponsor.

"Microsoft is pleased to be part of Calgary's long term strategic vision to deliver innovation to its employees, citizens and businesses," said Mike Tremblay, Vice President, Public Sector, Microsoft Canada. "We congratulate The City on the launch of calgary.ca and are delighted that Microsoft SharePoint 2010 was selected as the unified platform to help streamline its government services and foster collaboration between Calgary and its citizens and local businesses."

Through a competitive bidding process, The City of Calgary hired Infusion Development to complete development work on the website. "The goal from the onset was to ensure that citizens could find information and services quickly and easily." said, Bill Baldasti, VP Canadian Sales, Infusion. "For this, a custom feed-engine to enable smart searching was developed. On top of this, we built an extensive mapping suite, a completely optimized mobile experience, and online forms that all together will enable revolutionary new ways for the community to interact with their local government."

The new website marks a movement towards eGovernment and a shift to providing more services and information online. "Our citizens have said this is how they want to interact with their municipal government," said Watson. He adds, "The upgrades we've made to calgary.ca have built the foundation for The City to support future advances in technology and will allow us to better serve and communicate with Calgarians for years to come."

To access the new City of Calgary visit: www.calgary.ca

About calgary.ca
Calgary.ca was originally developed in 2002 to meet the growing demand of citizens requesting civic information online. Since its inception, The City has increasingly relied on the internet to deliver information to Calgarians.

Even as the population increases, contacting The City in-person or by phone is decreasing. Last year, the website reached over 9 million visitors. The new website now search-base and structured in a way that is easier to find information for both citizens and customers.

Trend Micro Updates Web Gateway Security for Broader, "Beyond the Browser" Control Over Cloud-Based Applications

Trend Micro Updates Web Gateway Security for Broader, "Beyond the Browser" Control Over Cloud-Based Applications

OTTAWA, Aug. 15, 2011 /CNW/ - Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704);(TSE: 4704), a global cloud security leader, today announced the latest release of its web gateway solution, which now delivers even greater visibility and control for cloud-based applications such as instant messaging, peer-to-peer, video and audio applications, and web mail.

Trend Micro™ InterScan™ Web Security 5.5 provides superior protection against Internet threats, while reducing costs through datacenter consolidation by supporting bare-metal, VMware® Ready and Microsoft® Hyper-V® virtual appliances. It works alongside the Advanced Reporting and Management module, a separate, but essential, component that provides centralized real-time network traffic visibility, drill-down historical reporting, and policy management.

New features for Trend Micro's InterScan Web Security 5.5 release include:

  • Application Control: provides greater visibility into and control over an organization's Internet usage. It automates the discovery and bandwidth usage of over 420 Internet-based protocols and the thousands of client applications that use them. Unlike most web gateway products which can only apply policies to the traffic they can proxy, Interscan Web Security provides total visibility across all ports and many more protocols.

  • HTTP Inspection: provides a more granular control to protect against emerging web threats through the ability to identify behavior and filter web traffic according to any characteristic of the HTTP protocol. Working with supplied policy templates, Administrators can control:
  • whether users can post content to social networking sites;
  • whether users can send specific attachment types in public webmail applications; and
  • which browsers/versions can be used to access the Internet.

In addition, system administrators can easily capture sample traffic from within the product and create custom filters to enforce any policy they might need.

  • URL Filtering enhancements including:

  • Time-based quotas: This allows administrators to define the total allowable browsing time within work/leisure hours that users can visit specific sites or categories of sites. Temporary time extensions can be granted as needed.

  • Password Override: This allows administrator-defined users to override the block action by typing a password in their browser to allow one-time access.

Supporting quotes:

Gabriel de Freitas Braga Castello Branco, security analyst, Real Protect Information Security
"We really like the new features in the latest release of InterScan Web Security. The application control capabilities give us great visibility, so we can discover any of over hundreds of Internet applications on our customers' networks."

John Maddison, GM of data center security, Trend Micro
"Employee-use of cloud-based Web 2.0 applications is standard for many organizations and, as a result, it exposes their organization to cybercriminals attempting to gain access to sensitive data. Trend Micro InterScan Web Security gives organizations visibility into the Internet-based applications, employees' use and also secures that usage by blocking unwanted or unsafe content at the network perimeter. It's powered by the Trend Micro™ Smart Protection Network™ infrastructure, which means customers are getting the superior protection that comes from a cloud-client innovation which combines sophisticated cloud-based reputation technology, feedback loops, and the expertise of TrendLabsSM researchers to deliver real-time protection from emerging threats."

Ready to Collaborate? Intuit Invites Innovators to Participate

Applications Being Accepted for Entrepreneur Day 2011

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug 10, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Startups and innovators looking to collaborate with a proven technology leader to help hatch their next great idea are invited to apply to participate in Intuit Inc.'s INTU +0.81% third annual Entrepreneur Day.

Whether it's mobile applications, cloud computing, or data analytics technology, Intuit is seeking companies that can help support its mission: improving the financial lives of its millions of customers. Those selected to participate will meet with Intuit business leaders and have one-on-one time to pitch their ideas and demonstrate their products.

Potential participants must submit an application that describes their product or service and a profile of their target customers. The application deadline is Sept. 9 for the event, to be held at Intuit's headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., on Oct. 6.

More details on the application process are available at the Intuit Collaboratory website at http://entrepreneur-day.com . Tips on how to create a successful, attention-getting proposal, are posted on the Intuit Network.

Benefits of Entrepreneur Day

Intuit, recently named as one of Forbes Most Innovative Companies, hosts Entrepreneur Day as part of its open innovation program. As a result of previous Entrepreneur Days, several companies have found opportunities to work with Intuit.

"Technology moves fast, and through Entrepreneur Day our Intuit leaders and the entrepreneurs on the front line of emerging technologies will begin to work together to bring something new to market that's meaningful for our customers," said Tayloe Stansbury, chief technology officer, Intuit. "As we open up our innovation processes, the entrepreneurs who participate can benefit from us introducing them to our large ecosystem of partners, suppliers and customers."

After attending last year's event, David Barrett, chief executive officer of Expensify, joined the Intuit Partner Platform and integrated his expense report program within QuickBooks.

"The time I invested in applying for and attending Entrepreneur Day paid off," said Barrett. "The experience opened a number of doors for me. I met with a lot of great people, from top to bottom, and got in front of the right decision makers to move a relationship with Intuit and their product development teams along quickly."

Entrepreneur Day 2011 will begin with a question-and-answer session with Intuit founder Scott Cook and the company's chief technology officer, Tayloe Stansbury. Participants will then get a closer look inside Intuit during roundtable discussions with leaders from the company's different business units. Vision to Reality Award Celebrates Dynamic Canadian Technology Companies

CALGARY, Alberta, Aug. 11, 2011 /CNW/ -- Calgary Scientific, a leading innovator in advanced visualization solutions and web, mobile and collaboration-enabling platforms today announced it was recently a Top 5 Finalist in PricewaterhouseCoopers' (PwC) inaugural Vision to Reality Awards program from amongst a field of more than 70 evaluated nominees across the nation. The awards program celebrates dynamic companies in the broad technology sector that have demonstrated successful growth and outstanding achievements making them among Canada's most successful technology companies. The criteria evaluated included the level of organizational and technical innovation demonstrated, current and potential financial performance, predicted staying power, as well as overall strategic direction.

"We are very pleased to have been named a Top 5 Innovator in the emerging Canadian technology sector," says Dr. Byron Osing, CEO and Chair of Calgary Scientific. "Calgary Scientific has built a strong reputation in the global Medical IT sector as a leading edge innovator with our ResolutionMD(TM) web and mobile product lines, which are now OEM'd by many of the largest global players in the industry, as well as for the major technical breakthrough's we have made with our PureWeb® platform. Aside from what we have accomplished in the medical sector, we are now coming up on radar screens across many other industries, and garnering the attention of the financial and analyst communities as a player to watch."

PureWeb is the first advanced software virtualization platform solution that allows multiple users to interact with the same instance of a software application simultaneously. The software's new collaboration capability allows geographically distributed users to access any PureWeb enabled application and collaborate with other users on a real-time basis, from any web-browser or supported mobile device. PureWeb allows existing software applications to be used in new ways and places, for less time and money, while maintaining high performance and security. Calgary Scientific has seen traction beyond the medical industry with retail, aerospace, defense, gaming, maintenance and simulation.

"PureWeb platform can simplify application management for many organizations through virtualization; it also has the potential to revolutionize the web, mobile and real-time advanced collaboration. While PureWeb is currently focused on the medical software industry, the solution itself can apply to many different industry verticals," said Ian Song, Senior Research Analyst with IDC. "PureWeb is a unique solution in the application virtualization space; it has the capability to address many applications others can't virtualize."

PwC Vision to Reality winners were evaluated by an independent panel of judges including executives from RIM, Fogler, Rubinoff LLP, Wellington Financial LP, Bridgescale Partners and Growthworks Capital. Other than Calgary Scientific, the finalists included Cavet Technologies Inc., IntelliView Technologies Inc. and Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc., with EcoSynthetix receiving the top honor.
