HP Raises the Bar on Dynamic Application Security Testing

HP WebInspect Real-Time finds and fixes vulnerabilities with exceptional speed and accuracy

PALO ALTO, Calif., July 14, 20111

HP today announced the release of HP WebInspect Real-Time, a dynamic application security testing solution that observes running application code in real time during testing to more accurately find vulnerabilities.

HP WebInspect Real-Time, based on HP WebInspect 9.1, works with HP Fortify SecurityScope to attack and observe an application during security testing, enabling testers to pinpoint line-of-code detail where vulnerabilities exist.

Dynamic analysis solutions execute automated security attacks against a running application to discover and validate vulnerabilities in its code and configuration. While this approach provides the quickest way to begin finding and fixing security vulnerabilities, when used in isolation it can be ineffective in identifying the source code file and line of code responsible for the security vulnerability.

HP WebInspect Real-Time can attack an application through automated external security tests, and then gather internal, code-level vulnerability information by observing the attacks in the code as they happen. This real-time cooperation of technologies results in higher accuracy in detecting an exploitable vulnerability, and more actionable information for remediating it.

“Dynamic application security testing (DAST) solutions scan web applications and identify attack patterns that can exploit applications, but even when a vulnerability is detected, DAST cannot point to the specific line of source code where the vulnerability exists,” said Joseph Feiman, vice president and fellow, Gartner. “This has led to the emergence of integrated application security testing (IAST) technologies that observe the running code of the application in real-time while the application is being tested. This helps to confirm or disprove the exploitability of the suspected vulnerability, and point to its origin in the application, as well as provide developers with real, actionable information like stack traces and line of code detail, so that they can fix the security problems faster and accurately.”

With the introduction of WebInspect Real-Time, users of HP application security solutions can:

  • Find more real vulnerabilities: HP Fortify SecurityScope, a new integrated application security testing technology that runs as part of the application being tested, enables HP WebInspect Real-Time to identify and crawl more of an application to expand the coverage of the attack surface and detect new types of vulnerabilities that can go undetected by siloed security-testing technologies.
  • Better understand application vulnerabilities: HP WebInspect 9.1 now improves the security tester's ability to review and interact with vulnerability results through a new searchable vulnerability grid view.
  • Fix security issues faster: By observing the running code of the application during testing through HP Fortify SecurityScope, HP WebInspect Real-Time can provide actionable details on identified issues, such as stack traces and lines of code. By confirming and removing duplicate vulnerabilities, it also eases prioritization of discovered issues.

"Fortify and HP are focused on finding and fixing security vulnerabilities in software code as early as possible in the development process," said Brian Chess, co-founder and chief scientist, Fortify Software, an HP Company. "Now through HP WebInspect Real-Time, we're able to combine static and runtime analysis with dynamic security testing in meaningful ways in a single solution, allowing our customers to find and fix these issues even earlier than before."

HP WebInspect Real-Time is now available worldwide, and consists of a bundle of HP WebInspect and HP Fortify SecurityScope.

These new security solutions are key elements of the HP Security Intelligence and Risk Management Framework, which helps businesses and governments in their pursuit of an Instant-On Enterprise. In a world of continuous connectivity, the Instant-On Enterprise embeds technology in everything it does to serve customers, employees, partners, and citizens with whatever they need, instantly.

HP will host HP Protect Sept. 11-14 in Washington. The event showcases how organizations can secure their Instant-On Enterprise.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PEER 1 Rolls out EMC Atmos Globally Distributed Cloud Storage for
Innovative Storage-as-a-Service

EMC Atmos Speeds Time to Market; Provides Highly Available, Flexible,
and Cost-Efficient Self-Service Cloud Storage

HOPKINTON, Mass. - July 18, 2011 - EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today
announced that PEER 1 Hosting, one of the top hosting providers in the
world with 12,000 customers, has deployed EMC® Atmos™
(http://www.emc.com/storage/atmos/atmos.htm) globally distributed
cloud storage as the foundation of its CloudOne Storage, a self-service,
metered storage solution. Powered by EMC Atmos, which provides powerful
and efficient management of globally distributed cloud storage and big
data environments, PEER 1’s CloudOne storage provides customers with a
highly flexible, cost-efficient and reliable storage-as-a-service
solution for content and data storage, backup and archiving, off-loading
of large media objects and virtually any other data requirement.

Dax Moreno, General Manager of ServerBeach, PEER 1 Hosting’s
dedicated server division, said, “We did an exhaustive evaluation of
eight cloud providers, but EMC was the only one that offered a
completely integrated software and hardware cloud storage solution. We
were also impressed with EMC’s big R&D investments in cloud. We
avoided having to start from scratch and build our own solution or buy
pieces from different vendors, so we were able to go to market much
faster by deploying EMC Atmos’ robust and proven cloud storage.”

With headquarters in Vancouver and 17 data centres worldwide, PEER 1
Hosting's
(http://www.emc.com/collateral/customer-profiles/h8641-peer1-hosting-cp.pdf)
deployment of EMC Atmos
(http://www.emc.com/collateral/software/data-sheet/h5770-atmos-ds.pdf)
has provided them with the ability to scale to unlimited capacities. The
solution incorporates key features of EMC Atmos software, including
GeoProtect for advanced data protection, Atmos Web Service APIs for
integrating customers’ Internet-based applications with CloudOne
Storage, and multi-tenancy to enable PEER 1 Hosting to securely and
efficiently serve multiple applications from a single cloud
infrastructure.

John Hamner, Product Manager, PEER 1 Hosting said, “Atmos has a lot
of built-in flexibility because we can easily set different policies to
match the different cost and availability requirements of our cloud
storage customers. We want to make sure that CloudOne Storage provides
not just raw storage but also the high availability our customers
demand. Additionally, with Atmos’ GeoProtect, we get sophisticated
data protection that is designed specifically for cloud
environments.”

One of PEER 1 Hosting’s objectives is to make sign up and access to
CloudOne easy. “Our go-to-market strategy is to make CloudOne Storage
just three clicks away from any customer that wants it,” stated
Hamner. “EMC Atmos helped us reach that goal and in addition, using
the new Atmos APIs, we are able to customize the fit for our
customer’s offerings and tap into a number of different markets
such as streaming media or desktop backups.”

One such customer is XYZMP3.com, which distributes digital music and
video to consumers through a variety of devices such as game systems,
digital video recorders, smart phones and PCs.
Roland DeLeon, CEO of XYZMP3.com, explained, “By leveraging the Atmos
API, we have our digital media streaming application tightly integrated
with CloudOne Storage. This has really accelerated our go-to-market
strategy because artists, producers and media outlets can use our
offering to more rapidly distribute their creative music and video
content across a wide variety of channels.”
“Instead of simply storing our customers’ data,” M
oreno adds,
“we’re able to cache the popular content on servers, use site
accelerators to distribute it a lot quicker, and provide faster page
loads and response times. As higher-quality video and music becomes more
pervasive on the Web, our cloud storage offering is expanding its role
as a huge market enabler for our customers.”

Trend Micro Supports Microsoft SBS 2011 Essentials for SMBs

LOS ANGELES, July 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at the 2011 Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global leader in Internet content security, has become the first hosted endpoint security provider to support Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials dashboard add-in functionality, with Worry-Free Business Security Services.

Worry-Free Business Security Services is a hosted security service for protecting PCs, servers and other Windows-based devices. It leverages the cloud to provide central management for the security of these devices without installing burdensome software components that will slow the server down. Now it includes a server dashboard add-in for the recently launched Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials.

"We are very excited about Trend Micro's support for SBS Essentials. Their Worry-Free Business Security Services solution perfectly marries the server's philosophy of an IT infrastructure that offers advanced functionality to our customers without the cost of high complexity that usually comes with it. As a cloud solution that integrates with the server's dashboard, Trend Micro's software does exactly that. It protects their network giving customers full control, but it takes away the worry and the time spent of making sure the software is always well maintained and up to date, small businesses will be pleased," said Enrico Toro, senior marketing manager, Windows Server, Microsoft.

With this new addition business owners have the ability to be in control of their businesses' security, they can see if it's at risk and can enforce policies such as Web usage. Because it is all hosted on the Internet they have visibility and control even while they're on the go.

"We know hosted endpoint security is fast becoming the platform of choice for small businesses," said Greg Boyle, global product marketing manager at Trend Micro. "We have been working closely with Microsoft during the development of SBS 2011 to deliver an update to our service and to ensure that it's available in all of our 22 supported languages to make cloud services more accessible to small businesses worldwide."

Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials is designed for businesses with less than 25 employees. It provides simple out-of-the-box functionality for improved data backup, remote access to company information and improved productivity. It also enables seamless integration to cloud services.

"Hosted security is perfect for small businesses buying their first server. Rather than deploying management software onto the box and potentially slowing it down, the full power of the box can be used to grow the business as it was intended. We expect that the adoption of hosted or cloud security along-side first servers and in particular Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, will significantly add to the 300,000 strong user base of our hosted endpoint platform," concluded Mr. Boyle.

New Symantec Web Gateway 5.0 Stops Malware In Its Tracks

Integrated DLP protects sensitive information from leaving organizations

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – July 12, 2011 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the release of Symantec Web Gateway 5.0, a Web security solution that protects organizations against all types of Web-borne malware. Web-based attacks are a primary vector for malicious activity and a leading source of malware infections in the enterprise. With an integrated ability to act as an enforcement point for Symantec Data Loss Prevention, Symantec Web Gateway customers also have the ability to monitor and protect sensitive information being communicated across the Internet. In addition, customers have the flexibility to deploy the solution as either a virtual appliance or on physical hardware.

Click to Tweet: Symantec Web Gateway protects businesses from Web-based attacks, which have almost doubled in the last year: http://bit.ly/qDe0jG

According to Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report, the average daily volume of Web-based attacks observed in 2010 was 93 percent higher than in 2009. Cybercriminals produce millions of new malware strains in a matter of hours, highlighting the need for real-time protection. Businesses need security solutions that accurately detect malware without compromising sensitive company intellectual property, or adding IT complexity.

Symantec Web Gateway provides comprehensive Web protection with more than URL filtering. The solution secures and manages Web traffic by blocking malware threats with real-time scanning, preventing confidential data loss over Web protocols and blocking inappropriate content. Symantec Web Gateway ensures that organizations maintain critical up-time and employee productivity which can both suffer when organizations come under attack.

Better Protection

Symantec Web Gateway is powered by Insight, Symantec’s award-winning community and cloud-based reputation technology, to detect and block new threats earlier and more accurately than any other Web gateway product. Symantec Web Gateway delivers innovative security that will ensure an organization’s information and employees stay safe on the Web. Backed by the world’s largest malware research organization, the Symantec Global Intelligence Network, Symantec Web Gateway is powered by the collective wisdom of more than 175 million systems which helps to identify new threats before they wreak havoc on unsuspecting victims. Based on advanced data-mining techniques, Symantec maintains a real-time dynamic security rating for more than 2.5 billion files, with 31 million new files added every week. These ratings allow Web Gateway and other Symantec security solutions to determine the riskiness of files and to rapidly identify new and existing threats. Insight enhances protection and can’t be evaded or coded around by self-mutating malware. The result is smarter scans and unmatched security.

Greater Control

Symantec Web Gateway, with its integrated ability to act as an enforcement point for Symantec Data Loss Prevention, gives customers the ability to monitor and protect sensitive information being communicated across the Internet. As more of today’s websites use SSL encryption, Symantec Web Gateway’s ability to quickly decrypt SSL will allow for full visibility into modern social networking and Web based email communication. Combining the unprecedented malware detecting intelligence of Symantec Web Gateway with Symantec’s market leading data loss prevention solution allows customers to deploy a robust Web security solution and implement a cohesive data loss prevention strategy from a single vendor.

Easy Management

Every IT environment is unique, and company preferences and requirements for deploying gateway security technology can vary greatly. Symantec Web Gateway adjusts to meet different needs by providing flexible deployment options. In addition to deployment of Symantec Web Gateway on a physical hardware appliance, customers now have the option to deploy Web Gateway as a virtual appliance on VMware ESX/ESXi 4.x servers. Together with Symantec’s highly-successful Symantec Messaging Gateway virtual offering - a featured VMware partner - Symantec provides organizations the ability to secure their Web and messaging infrastructure without requiring additional hardware.

Availability

Symantec Web Gateway 5.0 is available now as a stand-alone solution or as part of Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition. Existing Symantec Web Gateway and Protection Suite Enterprise Edition customers with a valid subscription are entitled to perform a simple upgrade to the new version at no additional cost.

Symantec Security Framework

Symantec Web Gateway is part of the Symantec Security Framework, a portfolio of security products and services that enable organizations to counter emerging threats, support new computing models and simplify security management. Symantec’s portfolio of security products and services allow organizations to pursue innovations - such as mobile, cloud and virtual computing models. By providing relevant, actionable security intelligence and simultaneously simplifying security management, businesses can increase both the efficiency and effectiveness of their security posture.

Quotes

“Symantec Web Gateway provides so much more than just URL filtering. By blocking malware from entering our environment, we better protect our network and reduce downtime due to attacks coming in through the Web. In our beta testing, we are seeing the solution block dozens of threats per day.”
-- Mark Feeney, principal IT systems engineer, AMETEK

“Our customers told us they wanted to deploy Symantec Web Gateway as a virtual appliance, and now they can. With this comprehensive approach to Web protection we keep the bad files out and the important files in.”
-- Blake McConnell, Senior Director, Product Management, Symantec

NEWS RELEASE: Cisco Unveils a First-of-Its-Kind Enterprise-Class Application and Business Tablet Ecosystem for Cisco Cius

f

Cisco Unveils a First-of-Its-Kind Enterprise-Class Application and
Business Tablet Ecosystem for Cisco Cius

Customers Worldwide Are Redefining Mobility in the Workplace With Cisco
Cius

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 29, 2011) - Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) today
introduced AppHQ™, an application ecosystem built specifically for Cisco
Cius™ that provides new ways to create, manage and rapidly deploy tablet
applications in the enterprise. Cisco Cius, an Android-based tablet
created for the enterprise, combines voice, video, collaboration, and
virtualization capabilities unlike any other tablet on the market today.
With Cisco Cius, organizations can now deliver an optimized tablet with
enterprise-grade security, as a natural extension of the enterprise
network. The device provides customers with mobility, centralized
manageability, virtual content creation and computing capabilities, and
a comprehensive suite of collaboration applications.

AppHQ provides developers with tools and resources to create, test and
market applications for Cisco Cius, and allows IT managers to control
which applications can be used on the devices. Additionally, companies
can create private, custom-branded application storefronts for their
organizations where employees can find, publish and procure applications
that complement their business environments.

During a series of media events hosted today, Cisco highlighted that
CDW, Nervecentre Software, Nottingham University Hospitals, Palomar
Pomerado Health, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Verizon are
among customers using Cisco Cius to help employees remove barriers to
mobile productivity in the office, around campus, at home or on the
road.

Introducing Cisco AppHQ: A Trusted Source for Business Applications

Cisco AppHQ is a highly secure, cloud-based user storefront that
provides capabilities for end users and IT managers not found in other
application stores today. Some of these capabilities include:

* Testing and validation: IT managers want to know that applications
deployed in their environment are appropriate for the enterprise. Cisco
AppHQ provides IT managers and users with a "trusted source" for
applications, ensuring that every application within AppHQ goes through
Cisco validation testing, whether developed by Cisco, third-party
Android developer partners, or users within the enterprise. The
validation process includes interoperability testing both for the
application itself and in typical configurations within the device.

* Store-within-a-Store: Enterprises will have a Cisco hosted,
highly-secure and private application store within AppHQ. Businesses can
customize the storefront, following their corporate branding guidelines,
including use of logos, icons and color schemes. Beyond customization,
the store-within-a-store is a platform that customers can use to deploy
applications efficiently in their organizations. For example, a
financial services company could deploy applications pertaining to their
back office operations, such as human resources or payroll apps, and
populate those applications on the devices of relevant employees.

* Empowers IT management: With AppHQ Manager™, IT will have the ability
to allow (or deny) access to application marketplaces by user role or
device and to grant (or deny) access to applications by type, source or
category. This unique capability will let IT organizations balance the
individual freedom of users with the enterprise-class policies on
security and cost efficiency.

Additional Details about Cisco AppHQ and Cisco Cius

* The AppHQ ecosystem will include Cisco selected, industry-leading
business and consumer applications that deeply integrate Cisco
collaboration capabilities, as well as validated business-to-business
and business-to-consumer applications from developer partners. Cisco
will continue to add applications to AppHQ based on customer
requirements. IT managers can also select from approxim
ately 200,000
applications in the Android Marketplace.

* Cisco AppHQ offers a user-friendly interface to find and install
applications, and a platform for user feedback about applications. End
users can find information about an application, such as the publisher
and release date, and install or update apps and even sort by category,
such as most popular or new.

* Cisco Cius offers integrated access to the comprehensive suite of
Cisco® Collaboration applications, including Cisco WebEx® meeting
applications, Cisco Quad™ social software, Cisco Jabber® messaging, and
Cisco TelePresence™.

* Cisco Cius is scheduled for global availability on July 31, 2011. The
estimated street price is below $750 USD and Cisco has made available a
new promotion* called "Triple V" (for Voice, Video and Virtualization)
that could enable further price reductions below $700 USD. Pricing may
vary by country. Basic access to Cisco AppHQ is included with every
Cisco Cius device.

* With Cisco Cius, customers benefit from enterprise-class warranty and
support with a single number to call. If necessary, a replacement can be
obtained in 24 hours. There are also one, two and three-year warranty
options from Cisco Services available, which follow an enterprise
customer model.

make more timely decisions. Our app, MIAA (Medication Information,
Anytime, Anywhere) not only pulls patient records from disparate
facilities on demand, but also lets multiple doctors consult via e-mail
and video conferencing while they all view the same patient information.
We chose the Cisco Cius because it allowed us to combine the flexibility
of the Android platform with enterprise-grade security and
virtualization, as well as access to important collaboration features
like HD video."

Mike Smith, vice president enterprise communications, network and
mobility, Verizon

"The promise of mobile Unified Communications and Collaboration for
decentralized, accelerated decision-making is coming to light with the
advent of intelligent 4G LTE networks, the cloud and enterprise tools
such as the Cisco Cius. Our sales teams and customers will continue to
benefit from cloud-based enterprise apps that help them get the job done
from virtually anywhere with greater collaboration and speedier service
delivery to their customers."

Elena Pokot, chief information officer, University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater

"One of the core values of our university is to prepare students to
deal with complexity, diversity, and change in the 21st century. To this
end, we strive to enable them to communicate and collaborate on multiple
levels within and outside of the organization, using a variety of means.
When we equip faculty and student project teams with the Cisco Cius and
its HD video capability with Cisco WebEx integration, we increase the
level of communication and reduce their dependency on location by
enabling a virtual presence. As a learning institution, we understand
that having such capability provides a powerful enhancement to the
collaboration
process. This is particularly relevant for students, whose
personal communication skills can further develop by observing and
learning body language, and experiencing visual awareness with others."

Terry Stepien, president, Sybase iAnywhere

"With the exponential growth of highly innovative personally owned and
corporate-liable devices, such as the new Cisco Cius Android tablet,
businesses are seeking a comprehensive platform to simplify and
centralize the development, deployment, management and security of their
mobile application landscapes across a widening array of device types.
We are pleased to partner with Cisco to develop collaboration-enabled
mobile applications that will leverage the unique capabilities of Cisco
Cius to drive exceptional customer value."

Ken Snyder, emerging technology solutions manager, CDW

"Call center supervisors are challenged with needing to be accessible
to their agents at all times, with the most up-to-date call center
performance and management information; however, the very nature of
their job requires that they are not tethered to a desk. CDW created an
application for Cisco Cius to extend the capabilities of CDW's Mobile
Wall Board to deliver a new realm of operational effectiveness and
productivity. The app provides call center supervisors with
instantaneous access to operational KPI data in order to take real-time
corrective action in their operations, to increase responsiveness to
their agents, and have a convenient all-in-one communication tool,
including video calling and presence."

Vittorio Viarengo, vice president, End-User Computing, VMware

"VMware and Cisco are committed to delivering full-featured,
user-centric solutions that enable people to work and collaborate freely
-- whether in the office or on the go. VMware View™ and the Cisco Cius
offer customers of all sizes a best-of-breed virtual workspace that
combines flexible and secure virtual desktops with unified collaboration
designed to support rich multimedia content, enabling universal access
to corporate applications and data."

Sumit Dhawan, vice president and general manager, Receiver and End-user
Services, Citrix

"New tablets like the Cius are an example of the expansion of
consumerization in the enterprise. Users want the flexibility to use a
variety of devices to do their work. Citrix is partnering closely with
Cisco, bringing virtualization and mobile collaboration together with
Citrix Receiver for the Cisco Cius, so both users and IT benefit from
this new and unique device."

: HP Announces webOS Pivot for HP TouchPad

Image001

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 23, 2011 – HP today announced HP webOS Pivot, providing users an entertaining and informative editorial resource for discovering webOS 3.0 applications for the HP TouchPad, which launches July 1.

Designed to complement the HP webOS App Catalog, Pivot will showcase a broad range of applications – and the developers who create them – by providing customers the freedom to explore based on their interests and lifestyles. It’s just one of the new ways HP is enhancing the webOS Developer Program and investing further in the success of the growing ecosystem.

“Pivot brings app discovery to a new level for customers and developers alike,” said Richard Kerris, vice president, webOS Worldwide Developer Relations, HP. “We want our partners to experience webOS as the growing platform of opportunity, and we’re investing in new ways to help market their applications on our platform.”

Published on a monthly basis, Pivot is designed to broaden developer exposure and create a dynamic marketplace for the burgeoning webOS developer community. Consisting of original content by journalists and photographers affiliated with leading publications, Pivot will include visually driven editorial pieces, columns from notable guest writers sharing their perspectives on digital culture, feature stories focused on applications around specific topics, and in-depth reviews – all accompanied by vibrant photos and illustrations on HP TouchPad’s brilliant screen. Content will be catered to the specific interests and requirements of a given region, appealing to a wide range of international customers.

Pivot will publish initially for English, French, German and Spanish languages and will be updated over the air directly to all HP TouchPad customers.

“Pivot has the right focus,” said Joe Simon, chief technology officer, Conde Nast. “It provides an enriching experience for customers and is a great environment for developers considering the platform.”

Investing in webOS developer success

The webOS Developer Program enhancements also include a new discount structure. Developers will have access to this pricing model based on their years in the Palm developer program and active applications in the webOS App Catalog.

“Working with HP and the webOS ecosystem has been fantastic,” said Haden Blackman, co-president and chief creative officer of Fearless Studios, a game company recently started by Blackman and fellow LucasArts alum, Cedrick Collomb. “It’s a perfect fit with our core values as a company – creative risks mitigated by smart technology choices. Because the platform is so accessible and developer-friendly, we’ve been able to build the game we want to build.”

“We love the TouchPad and the webOS platform for game development,” added Collomb, chief technology officer, Fearless Studios. “It’s built from the ground up for seamless connectivity between devices and it’s an open platform, which makes development that much easier.”

HP TouchPad availability

The Wi-Fi version of HP TouchPad(1) will be available in stores and online in the United States on July 1 with the option of either 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage(2) for $499.99 and $599.99, respectively.(3) HP TouchPad will be available in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Germany on July 2 and in Canada on July 15, with availability scheduled to follow later this year in Australia, Hong Kong, Italy, New Zealand, Singapore and Spain.

Battle of the Sexes: Who's better at online networking?

LinkedIn data reveals Canadian men are savvier online professional networkers than women

Toronto, Canada June 22, 2011LinkedIn, the world's largest professional network with more than 100 million members worldwide and more than three million in Canada, today released data on the differences between men and women when it comes to networking professionally online.

To declare a winner in this battle of the sexes argument, LinkedIn developed an online professional networking "savviness" ranking. Globally and in Canada men are savvier online professional networkers than women. LinkedIn defines online professional networking savviness as a ratio of two things: the ratio of connections that men have to connections that women have and the ratio of male members on LinkedIn to female members.

“Making connections and building solid relationships is crucial to business growth,” said Donna Messer, Canadian networking guru and owner of ConnectUs Communications. “As a businesswoman and entrepreneur, I don’t always have time to meet everyone face to face and networking online using LinkedIn has given me visibility and credibility. I encourage women to consider LinkedIn as a place to find common ground with their business contacts and to build relationships that will ultimately lead to career success.”

That’s not to say women aren’t already teaching men a professional networking lesson or two. “My husband was thinking of going back to school so I introduced him to LinkedIn,” said Alexa Samuels a retail strategy consultant and LinkedIn member based in Toronto. “I showed him how to use LinkedIn Advanced People Search to find graduates of the program he was applying to and so he could connect with them to get the inside scoop.”

LinkedIn’s data got even more interesting when it was sliced by industry. What you would think would be a female savvy industry (the textiles industry for example) is actually a male savvy industry. In the shipbuilding and think tank industries, it was the female professionals that were savvier online networkers than the men.

Top Canadian industries where women are savvier online professional networkers than men

1. Alternative medicine

2. Think tanks

3. Shipbuilding

4. Writing and editing

5. Alternative dispute resolution

Top Canadian industries where men are savvier online professional networkers than women

1. Textiles

2. Glass, ceramics & concrete

3. Investment banking

4. Recreational facilities and services

5. Government relations

In Canada, men and women were equally as savvy in the following industries: “architecture & planning,” “furniture,” “market research,” “public safety” and “ranching.”

Blancco's Solution Answers Cloud Computing Need for Erasure of Storage Systems in Live Storage Environments

Blancco's Solution Answers Cloud Computing Need for Erasure of Storage Systems in Live Storage Environments

Blancco's New LUN Eraser Helps Prevent Dangerous Information Leaks

ATLANTA, GA, June 22, 2011 /CNW/ - Blancco, the global leader in data erasure and end-of-lifecycle solutions, recently launched its latest solution for the secure erasure of data within live storage environments.

With worldwide revenue from public IT cloud services forecast to reach US$55.5 billion by 2014, [1] data centers will be entrusted with more information than ever before. In this rapidly emerging cloud computing environment, data centers need secure, cost-effective options for reusing enterprise storage systems without rebuilding them. For safe reuse of these costly and complex systems, Blancco offers LUN Eraser, a centralized tool that can erase logical drives like LUNs in a live storage environment where the host computer cannot be rebooted.

"Not only does Blancco LUN Eraser sustain data center compliance with a wide range of policies and regulations like PCI DSS, it can simultaneously erase data on 200 or more logical units through remote management from an application server," said Markku Willgren, President of Blancco's US Operations. "For external data centers and internal corporate users alike, this concurrent erasure expedites data removal and improves productivity, while also providing detailed erasure reports for audit purposes."

Blancco LUN Eraser erases logical and physical drives detected by UNIX and Windows operating systems. It shreds the drive by overwriting the entire writeable area, sector by sector, according to a process chosen from among all major government and industry overwriting standards, as required by the user. The automatically generated report, which documents details like the LUN identifier and date, time, and technician for the erasure, can be uploaded to Blancco Management Console or emailed as a PDF.

Blancco LUN Eraser protects data at vulnerable transition points

Blancco LUN Eraser supports both corporate users with data centers and external storage providers in their efforts to meet increasingly strict regulations and internal data security policies that mandate data destruction. Common scenarios that require erasure of LUNs and associated documentation include:

  • PCI DSS compliance - The Payment Card Data Security Standard requires that customer data is not stored more than five years. At the end of this period, the data must be securely erased and the process thoroughly documented.
  • Disaster recovery test - Disaster recovery tests are necessary to ensure a high availability data center environment. During these tests, LUN data is replicated and must be erased afterwards for security reasons, with appropriate documentation to prove its removal.
  • End-of-hosting subscription - In a cloud computing environment, customers may come and go. Erasure is necessary for LUN reuse in a hosted environment when a current customer leaves and a new user is assigned to an existing LUN.

To find out more about how Blancco LUN Eraser meets these and other data center requirements for erasure of logical and physical drives, visit http://www.blancco.com/en/product-services/blancco-lun-eraser.

About Blancco

Blancco is the proven data erasure solution for millions of users around the globe. As the global leader in data erasure and end-of-lifecycle solutions, Blancco offers the most certified data erasure solutions within the industry. The company serves users across a wide range of industries, including banking, finance, government and defense, as well as IT Asset Disposal professionals.
