CIOs REVEAL HIRING PROJECTIONS FOR THIRD QUARTER

Robert Half Technology Survey Finds High Confidence in Business Prospects and Planned IT Investments

TORONTO, June 14 /CNW/ - Technology executives forecast continued information technology (IT) hiring activity in the third quarter of 2011, according to the just-released Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Index and Skills Report. In the latest quarterly survey, 18 per cent of chief information officers (CIOs) said they plan to expand their IT departments, and 4 per cent expect cutbacks, for a net 14 per cent projected increase in hiring. Ninety-three per cent of CIOs are confident in their companies' growth prospects in the next three months, a five-point increase from last quarter.

The IT Hiring Index and Skills Report is based on telephone interviews with more than 270 CIOs from companies across Canada with 100 or more employees. Executives are asked whether their companies plan to increase or decrease the number of full-time IT personnel on their staff during the coming quarter. The survey is conducted by an independent research firm and developed by Robert Half Technology, a leading provider of IT professionals on a project and full-time basis. Robert Half has been tracking IT hiring activity in Canada since 2000.

                                 Key Findings
                                 ------------

    -  The net 14 per cent increase in anticipated IT hiring activity is down
from a net 17 per cent projected last quarter. However, executives'
confidence in business growth and IT investments is rising.
    -  Ninety-three per cent of CIOs are confident in their companies' growth
prospects in the next three months, a five-point increase from last
       quarter.
    -  More than half (52 per cent) of technology executives rated the
confidence of their firms investing in IT projects in the third
quarter a 4 or higher on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the most
optimistic. This is up 11 points from the last quarter.
    -  Network administrators and Windows administrators are in greatest
demand right now, according to survey respondents.
    -  Forty-nine per cent of CIOs said it's challenging to find skilled
professionals today, up ten points from the previous quarter.

"In order to meet increased technology demand, organisations are continuing to hire IT professionals," said Lara Dodo, a regional vice-president of Robert Half Technology in Canada. "Firms are even more confident in their future business growth and planned IT investments, compared to last quarter."

Confidence in Business Growth and IT Investments
               ------------------------------------------------

Ninety-three per cent of CIOs reported being at least somewhat confident in their company's prospects for growth in the third quarter of 2011; 52 per cent rated the probability of investing in IT projects a 4 or higher on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the most optimistic.

                               Skills in Demand
                               ----------------

The functional areas in which executives interviewed foresee the greatest challenge in finding skilled IT professionals are networking (19 per cent) -- up from 11 per cent last quarter, and help desk/technical support (15 per cent). Security and applications development followed, with 10 per cent and 9 per cent of the response, respectively.

Network administration and Windows administration remain the skill sets in greatest demand, each cited by 69 per cent of CIOs. Database management ranked second, with 68 per cent of the response, followed by desktop support at 64 per cent.

                              Industries Hiring
                              -----------------

The finance, insurance and real estate sector leads in terms of hiring expectations for the third quarter. Twenty-two per cent of CIOs plan to expand their IT departments and none anticipate staff reductions. Executives in the professional services industry and the business services sector forecast a net 20 per cent and 18 per cent projected hiring increase, respectively.

                               About the Survey
                               ----------------

The quarterly IT Hiring Index and Skills Report was developed by Robert Half Technology and conducted by an independent research firm. First published in 2000, the study is based on more than 270 telephone interviews with CIOs from a random sample of Canadian companies with 100 or more employees. In order for the study to be statistically representative and ensure that companies from all segments were represented, the sample was stratified by industry and number of employees. The results were then weighted to reflect the proper number of employees within each region. The margin of error for this study is +/-5.0 per cent at the 90 per cent level of confidence.

Information from the study is featured in The Robert Half Professional Employment Report, which was launched last year and the first study of its kind to monitor the hiring environment for professional-level positions exclusively. Based on more than 1,000 telephone interviews with executives throughout Canada, it provides insight on employment trends to help businesses and job seekers prepare for the upcoming quarter. To see how hiring within the technology profession has changed since last quarter and how it compares to other sectors, please visithttp://www.roberthalf.ca/per.

HP Delivers Enterprise Agility With New Converged Infrastructure Solutions

HP Delivers Enterprise Agility with New Converged Infrastructure Solutions

LAS VEGAS, June 6, 2011 – HP today announced several industry-first Converged Infrastructure solutions that improve enterprise agility by simplifying deployment and speeding IT delivery.

HP Converged Infrastructure solutions are a key element in a client’s Instant-On Enterprise journey. These offerings break through IT sprawl and turn technology assets into interoperable, shared pools of resources with a common management platform. These new offerings include:

Converged Systems, a new portfolio of turnkey, optimized and converged hardware, software, tailored consulting and HP Solution Support services that enable clients to be up and running with new applications in hours vs. months.(1) The solutions address top application areas including real-time data analytics, database consolidation and data warehouse.

Converged Storage architecture and portfolio, which integrates HP Store360 scale-out software with HP BladeSystem and HP ProLiant hardware to reduce storage administration, speed time to service delivery, increase energy efficiency and improve access for any data type or application workload. The offerings are complemented by new Storage Consulting services.

Converged Data Center, a new class of HP Performance Optimized Data Centers (PODs) that can be deployed faster than any competitive offering – just 12 weeks – and at a quarter of the cost when compared to a traditional brick-and-mortar data center.(2) Extending HP’s leadership in modular data centers, the HP POD 240a, also referred to as the “HP EcoPOD,” uses 95 percent less facilities energy.(3)

HP Server Automation 9.1 software seamlessly provisions physical and virtual application instances across the entire life cycle.

UPS relies upon HP Converged Infrastructure solutions to help deliver more than 15 million packages daily and keep its website available at all times for tracking. HP Converged Infrastructure allows UPS to scale technology resources to meet changing demands and support the organization’s highly distributed environment.

Delivering enterprise agility with Converged Infrastructure

Cloud computing and mobility are redefining how people live, how organizations operate and how the world interacts. Enterprises must instantly adjust to meet the changing needs of users, customers and citizens by driving innovation and agility through technology. Yet IT sprawl is causing enterprise complexity and crippling the ability of organizations to keep pace with enterprise demands.

Research conducted on behalf of HP found that 95 percent of private and public sector executives consider agility important to the success of their organizations. Plus, more than two-thirds of C-suite executives believe that enterprise agility is driven by technology solutions.(4)

“In a world where enterprises must instantly react to changing markets, clients are turning to HP Converged Infrastructure to dramatically improve their agility,” said Dave Donatelli, executive vice president and general manager, Enterprise Servers, Storage and Networking, HP. “The new solutions announced today extend the benefits of convergence to deliver new levels of speed, simplicity and efficiency that enable clients to capitalize and anticipate change.”

Converged Systems accelerate time to application value

HP Converged Systems speed solution deployment by providing a common architecture, management and security model across virtualization, cloud and dedicated application environments. They include:

HP VirtualSystem increases performance and reduces complexity with an architecture optimized for virtual server and virtual desktop environments. It integrates server, storage, networking, virtualization software and services, dramatically simplifying deployment and management. It also provides advanced security and single-pane-of-glass management across hybrid environments, and it supports Microsoft® Hyper-V, Citrix Xen and VMware. HP VirtualSystem provides a simple path to cloud computing with a rapid upgrade to HP CloudSystem.

HP CloudSystem, originally announced January 2011, provides a platform for building and managing cloud services across private, public and hybrid environments. Universal security, governance and multitenant management enable clients to ensure quality of service and reduce risk.

HP AppSystem maximizes performance while simplifying deployment and application management. These systems offer best practice operations with a standard architecture that lowers total cost of ownership. Among the new systems are HP Vertica Analytics System, as well as HP Database Consolidation Solution and HP Business Data Warehouse Appliance, which are both optimized for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.

HP Technology Services provides a full life cycle of consulting services including strategy, assessment, design, test, implementation and training. HP Solution Support provides single-point-of-contact services for the entire turnkey solution, including third-party software.

HP Converged Storage drives rapid response

Legacy monolithic and unified storage architectures were designed to address predictable workloads, structured data and dedicated access – before the explosive growth of web browsers and smartphones. Today’s requirements, however, are exactly opposite, with unpredictable application workloads, such as cloud, virtualization and big data applications. These IT challenges change the relationship between storage, servers, networks and applications, requiring a new level of integration across the enterprise.

To address this gap in storage, HP’s new Converged Storage architecture fundamentally changes how data is accessed by integrating scale-out storage software with converged server and storage hardware platforms. Advanced management tools that span the architecture help speed IT service delivery. As a result, clients can deploy and grow storage 41 percent faster(5) while reducing administration time by up to 90 percent.(6)

HP Converged Storage solutions enable clients to independently increase performance and capacity without downtime for any data type or application workload. New solutions include:

HP X5000 G2 Network Storage Systems increase availability for file serving in small enterprise environments. Built on HP BladeSystem technology, they can be deployed in minutes and reduce power requirements up to 58 percent, cooling needs up to 63 percent and storage footprint up to 50 percent.(7)

HP X9000 IBRIX Network Storage Systems optimize retention of unstructured data with new compliance features and the capacity for more than 1 million snapshots. The solution provides insight to the enterprise on trends, market dynamics and other pertinent facts by simplifying management of massive data sets. Policy management capabilities automate the movement of data to optimize resources. It is ideal as a content archiving solution for email, SharePoint files, multimedia, medical image archival (Picture Archive Communications Systems) and other file-based data.

Enhanced HP storage systems and new services

HP’s fifth-generation Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) family includes the new HP P6000 EVA, offering thin provisioning and Dynamic LUN Migration software along with 8 Gb Fibre Channel, 10 Gb iSCSI and FCoE support. This easy-to-manage solution enables clients to consolidate application data to speed administration and reduce total cost of ownership.

HP Enterprise Services has integrated HP 3PAR Storage into the HP Data Center Storage Package, which offers world-class storage management services that allow clients to “flex” their storage needs up and down with changes in demand. Offering thin provisioning and autonomic data tiering, this service provides 3PAR in a utility storage model.

HP also announced a new Storage Consulting Services offering that helps clients to design and deploy a Converged Storage environment, optimize the storage infrastructure, reduce costs, and protect and align data while preparing storage for cloud computing.

First Converged Data Center sets standard for the future

Demands for data center capacity continue to rise, however, traditional brick-and-mortar construction methods can take up to two years or longer to build, are costly and can consume more energy than the technology they support.

The HP POD 240a, the world’s most efficient data center, can be deployed in weeks vs. years, as well as save upfront capital costs by up to 75 percent when compared to a brick-and-mortar facility.(8) Annual facilities energy savings can be reduced by up to 95 percent with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) as low as 1.05, compared to a PUE of 2.0 for traditional data centers.(9)

Automation helps drive agility

HP Server Automation 9.1 provides heterogeneous, automated server life cycle management for enterprise servers and applications for both converged and traditional environments. With new integrated database automation, it offers a single tool that enables IT to significantly reduce the time it takes to achieve full application life cycle automation.

HP Extends Cloud Leadership
with New Hybrid Delivery Solutions

New market opportunities for enterprise clients, service providers change dynamics of cloud industry

LAS VEGAS, June 7, 2011 – HP today extended its Hybrid Delivery solutions portfolio so enterprises can improve their agility and quickly respond to changing customer and citizen needs.

Hybrid delivery environments, which combine traditional IT infrastructures with private and public clouds, enable enterprise agility by using flexible delivery models to best meet changing market demands.

Recent research conducted on behalf of HP reveals that 95 percent of business and government executives believe agility is important to the success of their organizations. Investments in technology were viewed as a key factor to increasing agility in the next five years.(1)

Building hybrid environments to enhance enterprise agility

HP CloudSystem – the most complete, integrated and open platform for building and managing services across private, public and hybrid cloud environments – now includes the industry’s first “dual bursting” capability to help clients manage uneven demands. This innovation allows clients to provision and dynamically scale resources up and down either via a public cloud provider or through an onsite pay-as-you-go cloud model.

In addition, to enable service providers to take advantage of the rapidly growing cloud market, HP announced HP CloudAgile, a comprehensive program that spans the full HP enterprise portfolio including CloudSystem. To speed time to revenue and improve financial flexibility for a broad range of service providers, the program provides participants with direct access to HP’s global sales force and its worldwide network of channel partners, as well as opportunities to deliver new cloud services.

Transforming technology environments to leverage sourcing options

HP Hybrid Delivery services enable clients to select the best method of delivery for their organizations, tuned to their environments.

HP Support Services for CloudSystem provides a single point of accountability with integrated hardware and software support, 24/7 coverage, proactive problem prevention and automated HP Remote Support. As a result, clients can shift resources from trouble shooting to innovation, improving their ability to quickly respond to changing customer and citizen demands.

In addition, HP CloudStart services extend the capabilities of HP CloudSystem to help clients define initial private cloud services, implement internal costing and chargeback, and comply with clients’ existing security and backup policies. New functionality automates deployments of basic applications, compliance monitoring and patch management in a private cloud. This allows clients to realize the benefits of cloud computing in a compressed timeframe.

New HP CloudSystem curriculum and courses from HP Education Services provide clients with knowledge and change management support to quickly realize the full potential of their cloud technology investments.

Delivering cloud-based security services

New HP security services, available through the cloud, mitigate risk of security vulnerabilities, while lowering the financial commitment often required for security contracts. Services include:

HP Enterprise Cloud Service – Vulnerability Scanning, which reduces the risk of data loss or unauthorized access by reducing common security mistakes. The service scans network nodes – including servers and networking devices where vulnerabilities may exist.

HP Enterprise Cloud Service – Vulnerability Intelligence, which provides information on newly discovered potential threats, enabling clients to take corrective actions with targeted, actionable information before an outage or network loss occurs.

HP also announced enhancements to HP Cloud Services Enablement for Communications as a Service (HP CSE for CaaS). These services enable communications service providers to help their small- and midsize business customers take advantage of utility pricing and the flexibility of an on-demand services model. : Global Survey Reveals Canadian Companies Among Top Cloud Computing Adopters

Global Survey Reveals Canadian Companies Among Top Cloud Computing Adopters Experiencing Cloud Sprawl

Three Signs Point to Cloud Computing as a Maturing Technology

TORONTO--(Marketwire - Jun 7, 2011) - Avanade, a business technology services provider, today announced the results of a global survey, which reveals the rapid growth in the use of public cloud services. Cloud services are becoming more mainstream, which is causing growing pains for many companies. One in five executives says it's impossible to manage the disparate cloud services within their organization, while another 60 percent globally and 71 percent in Canada are worried about cloud sprawl -- the unmanaged adoption of public cloud services within an organization.

Despite these challenges, the survey shows cloud computing is maturing in the enterprise as CIOs increasingly look to cloud services to achieve business benefits, such as improved flexibility, reduced costs and helping to speed time to market.

"Just two years ago, Avanade's 2009 survey found Canada was among the slowest cloud adopters and this year we are one of the top three," said Benoit Bertrand, vice president and chief technology officer at Avanade Canada. "Further, our 2011 survey shows the barrier to entry for many cloud capabilities continues to lower. In fact, our research shows some cloud services are so easy to use, they are outpacing IT's ability to manage and control them."

One in five respondents says they have personally purchased a cloud service without the IT department's knowledge. While 60 percent of companies globally and 77 percent in Canada report they have policies in place that prohibit such actions, respondents say there are no real deterrents for purchasing cloud services by stealth. In fact, 29 percent report there are no ramifications whatsoever while another 48 percent say it is little more than a warning.

The survey also reveals a communication chasm. One-quarter of executives report they don't have open communication with the departments and business unit leaders that may be provisioning their own cloud services.

"While policy is a place to start, managing cloud sprawl requires a real cooperation and dialogue between CIOs and their business counterparts," said Tyson Hartman, global chief technology officer at Avanade. "It's important that companies define a user-centric cloud strategy. With that strategy in hand, it's much easier to have an open dialogue in discovering what cloud services are already being used, where the gaps are and what new technologies the company should leverage to drive business value."

In terms of overall cloud computing adoption, the survey found 74 percent of companies are using some form of cloud services today -- a 25 percent growth in adoption since Avanade's September 2009 survey. Of those organizations that have yet to implement cloud, three-quarters say it's on the horizon.

With this growth in adoption also emerged three signs cloud computing is maturing:
1. Companies are increasing investments to secure, manage and support cloud.
2. There is a growing adoption and preference for private cloud.
3. Executives are starting to see cloud as a way to generate revenue.

Executives report they are investing in security solutions as well as people to ensure successful cloud deployments. In fact, 64 percent say they are investing in training for new and current employees to increase expertise in cloud technologies. This number increases to 80 percent in Canada.

The survey also shows private cloud deployments are growing -- especially where critical, differentiating internal operations and customer services are at stake. Today, 43 percent of companies report they utilize private clouds, while an additional 34 percent say they will begin to do so in the next six to 12 months.

Further, companies are moving beyond internal employee-facing cloud services to use them with external customers. Many companies report they are now using cloud computing to deliver new products and services to customers, while more than one in five C-level executives believe cloud computing will increase revenues.

"Any decision to begin using cloud computing requires forethought, planning and preparation," said Larry Beck, senior director, cloud strategy at Avanade. "Companies must identify their business objectives, determine which applications are prime targets for moving to the cloud, prove the business case and ensure the technology fits. The journey to cloud is an evolution that will occur over time. IT professionals should start with a clear plan, sound analysis, proven methodologies and practices, and a strong line of communication to the user community and corporate executives."

The "Has Cloud Computing Matured?" survey was conducted by Kelton Research, an independent research firm, in March to April 2011, and surveyed 573 C-level executives, IT decision makers and business unit leaders at top companies located in 18 countries across North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

City of Cambridge announces "first-of-a-kind" program to improve city planning

City of Cambridge Selects IBM Analytics to Enhance City Operations and Services

CAMBRIDGE, ON, June 6, 2011 – IBM (NYSE: IBM) and the City of Cambridge today announced a new, collaborative initiative that combines IBM research, consulting services and software to help the City improve city planning, operations and services across all municipal departments.

The new IBM Analytics for City Services and Safety (ACCESS) project at the City of Cambridge is part of IBM’s “First-of-a-Kind” program that brings IBM researchers and clients together to test new technologies for business and develop software solutions to improve the way business works. The project will help the City foster greater collaboration by improving the quality of its information across all key municipal departments. Through the initiative, IBM’s Global Business Services consultants and its research arm will combine IBM research innovation in asset management, predictive modeling, and geo-spatial analytics with IBM business analytics software to unify city asset and service management.

This pioneering collaboration will help the City develop a unified approach to quickly take relevant information from different departments and apply the insight gleaned across all city departments and private service providers. Through the project, Cambridge will be able to synchronize work to better understand how to apply limited resources to sustainably improve quality of service. This will help ensure roads don’t get dug up multiple times, minimize disruption to the public and infrastructure and help the City better plan for future growth.

Like all cities, Cambridge has a network of complex systems which are managed by multiple departments. These departments perform several types of activities ranging from capital improvement planning and project execution through to the management of day-to-day city operations. They must also prepare for unplanned events like snow storms and traffic accidents. Budget restraints, coupled with growing demands due to rapid urbanization and aging infrastructure add further complexity.

These complex challenges require city departments to develop and deliver diverse technical skills, equipment and operational processes as they coordinate across multiple levels to support efficient operations.

As one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, the City of Cambridge is progressively tackling these urban challenges before they become major impediments.

Today’s move extends the City’s leadership as a smart city. In Sept. 2010, Cambridge reached a major milestone by applying federal gas tax monies and IBM software to better manage over 200,000 critical Transportation and Public Works assets such as buildings, sewer systems and roadways across 50,000 locations. This new project extends that work, using sophisticated analytics to integrate relevant information in real-time across all departments.

“This new initiative will help us transform from a sense and respond model that is mainly focused on one area to a more predictive model across multiple departments," said Mayor Doug Craig. “With technology innovation, we can reduce overall operating costs, improve quality of service and sustainably enhance operations, infrastructure and public safety for our citizens.” Cambridge was named Canada’s first ‘smarter city’ by IBM in late 2010.

The City of Cambridge ACCESS program will draw on insights from a recent IBM initiative with Washington DC’s Water and Sewer Authority. This collaboration helped the US federal government’s water department develop solutions to more efficiently manage work crews and infrastructure while enhancing revenue and streamlining water usage.

IBM's CFO study found that organizations that invest in analytics lead their peers with 49 percent higher revenue growth, 20 times more profit growth, and 3 percent higher return on invested capital.

“We live in an age in which analytics are an effective tool to help cities better monitor, measure and manage nearly any physical system at work,” said Lisa Caldwell, managing partner, Global Business Services, IBM Canada.  “By collecting and analyzing capital project planning information on everything from transportation networks to the electricity grid, the City of Cambridge will become a worldwide model on how to predict how changes to one system will impact others to substantially increase efficiency and productivity.”

In the last five years, IBM has invested more than $14 billion in organic investments as well as 25 strategic acquisitions and dedicated more than 8000 analytics consultants with industry expertise to build its business analytics capabilities worldwide.

To further help cities of all sizes improve services and reduce costs, IBM today launched the Intelligent Operations Centre for smarter cities. The work is based on what the company has learned from leading more than 2,000 smarter cities and insights from many first of a kind research projects similar to this one over the past two years. The Operations Center will infuse analytical insights into municipal operations through one central point of command so cities will be able to better anticipate problems, respond to crises, and manage resources

Press Release
Moscow, Russian Federation – June 6, 2011

INOVENTICA group of companies to offer cloud services
Select Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy DWDM optical transport network across Russia to provide cloud services

INOVENTICA, a new infrastructure service provider in Russia, is ready to offer cloud computing services to public and private customers. The company will use a DWDM optical transport network from Nokia Siemens Networks to deliver its services. The network is capable of delivering services at 40G (gigabits per second) to 83 Russian regions.

“The development of our own high-tech IT infrastructure with an advanced transport network is a strategically important step for us,” said Vladimir Scherbinin, general director, INOVENTICA. “Expansion of the backbone capacity using advanced technologies from Nokia Siemens Networks will help us improve the quality of services delivered to end-users.”

“Private clouds address the security concerns of large enterprises and public sector companies. Moreover, cloud computing helps them focus on their core priorities without getting concerned with technology implementation,” said Kristina Tikhonova, general director, Nokia Siemens Networks, Russia.

The solution provided by Nokia Siemens Networks is based on its multi-reach hiT 7300 DWDM platform that uses coherent transmission technology*, in particular a modulation format called CP-QPSK (coherent polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying). The platform offers effective 40 Gbps optical channel network design, low-latency connections, and enables an overall reduction in deployment cost and time. It also reduces the operating expenditure and speeds up service delivery.

Nokia Siemens Networks has also supplied its TNMS (Transmission Network Management System) that provides end-to-end administration and performance monitoring for the complete network. TNMS improves operational efficiency, reduces costs for service delivery and simplifies network operations.
