Symantec Introduces New Security Solutions to Counter Advanced Persistent Threats

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 and Symantec Protection Center 2.0 to combat the volume and complexity of cyber attacks in traditional and virtual environments

TORONTO, ON – May 4, 2011 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) continues its mission to protect the world’s information and allow organizations to confidently conduct business in today’s connected world. Threats to information continually evolve, and new security solutions from Symantec help organizations of all sizes identify and combat coordinated, multi-pronged attacks on information which are striking businesses with increasing frequency. Symantec Endpoint Protection 12, now available for public beta and optimized for virtual environments, will offer organizations the vital protection needed to effectively block both known and new cyber threats. Symantec Protection Center 2.0 will draw upon correlated visibility from multiple security products combined with Symantec’s Global Intelligence Network to provide relevant actionable intelligence that reduces risks to enterprise businesses.

Click to Tweet: Combat cyber attacks with correlated visibility and actionable intelligence in new Symantec Protection Center: http://bit.ly/lxh7UK

Threat Landscape:  The sheer volume of sophisticated attacks targeting organizations of all sizes poses a daunting challenge for traditional signature-based security solutions that can’t keep up.  According to Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report, in 2010, attackers unleashed more than 286 million distinct malicious programs, an average of more than nine new threats every second of every day. These threats impact multiple areas of the IT infrastructure with a 93 percent increase in Web-based attacks, 42 percent more mobile vulnerabilities, and  6,253 new vulnerabilities including 14 zero-day vulnerabilities which played a key role in targeted attacks like Hydraq and Stuxnet. Security solutions that provide central management and security intelligence are required to combat persistent, coordinated assaults on organizations today.

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12:  To provide unmatched protection against this new threat landscape, Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 is designed to detect and block sophisticated new threats earlier, more accurately, and with greater performance than any other security product. Symantec Endpoint Protection leverages Insight, Symantec’s award-winning community and cloud-based reputation technology, to block new and unknown threats missed by other security solutions.  By blocking risky files with a poor reputation from entering an organization, Symantec Endpoint Protection provides a vital first line of defense in the battle against advanced persistent threats. Built for speed and effectiveness in virtual environments, internally-conducted testing of the software in heavily consolidated virtual environments shows a 90 percent reduction in disk usage, thus delivering up to a tenfold increase in consolidation density. Symantec continues to work closely with VMware to take full advantage of virtualization awareness and introspection capabilities based on VMware vShield technology, and Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 is the first step along the optimization path for virtual and cloud environments.

Symantec now opens its previously invitation-only beta program to the public, and interested parties may sign up here. Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12, also now available for public beta, will offer small organizations with limited IT staff and resources a solution they can easily deploy to start protecting their businesses in less than 20 minutes (on average in a less than 50 user environment). The new versions are scheduled to be generally available later this year for purchase through Symantec’s worldwide network of value-added authorized resellers, distributors and systems integrators or directly.

Large and small organizations differ vastly in the complexity of environments and the expertise required to deploy and manage protection which is why Symantec provides different offerings based on those organizational needs. For mid- to large-sized organizations, Symantec offers Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 for on-premises deployment. For smaller organizations, Symantec offers both on-premises and cloud-based solutions with Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition and Symantec Endpoint Protection.cloud, respectively, providing customers with flexibility of choice and freedom of deployment to best meet their business needs.

Symantec Protection Center 2.0:  Effective protection against today’s complex attacks requires correlated visibility into multiple security products along with actionable intelligence to reduce risk and simplify management. Without a way to summarize and prioritize risk factors across products, groups and regions, organizations can easily overlook high-severity threats and compromise their security posture.  Symantec Protection Center 2.0 is a centralized security management console that will allow organizations to identify emerging threats, prioritize tasks and accelerate time to protection based on relevant, actionable intelligence.

To identify emerging threats across local and global environments, Symantec Protection Center will offer a centralized view across the Symantec security portfolio and third-party products through three levels of integration - single sign-on, data collection and process automation.  Organizations will be able to extract local intelligence from their security solutions to identify trends across areas such as malware, spam and assets. Symantec Protection Center delivers context-aware security management by correlating data from enterprise security products along with early warning alerts from the Symantec’s Global Intelligence Network, one of the world’s leading commercial cyber-intelligence communities. Symantec Protection Center 2.0 is fully integrated with Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 and will be available for existing Symantec customers of integrated products at no additional charge later this year.

Symantec Security Framework:  Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Protection Center are part of the Symantec Security Framework, a portfolio of security products and services that enable organizations to counter emerging threats, support new computing models and simplify security management. Symantec’s portfolio of security products and services allow organizations to pursue innovations - such as mobile, cloud and virtual computing models. By providing relevant, actionable security intelligence and simultaneously simplifying security management, businesses can increase both the efficiency and effectiveness of their security posture.

Quotes:

Symantec Endpoint Protection defends against all types of attacks and is optimized for performance on VMware View and VMware vSphere®.”
-- Francis deSouza, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Security Group, Symantec
  • “Organizations leveraging the VMware vSphere® platform require superior security effectiveness that doesn’t sacrifice performance. Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 in a virtual environment is demonstrating a high level of performance without sacrificing the security of my virtual machines."
-- Seth Shestack, Associate Director of Information Security, Temple University
  • “The best thing about Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition is that we don’t even know it is there – the product didn’t slow anything down, the installation was flawless and we know we’re protected. It is not common practice for us to participate in beta programs, but our confidence in Symantec is so high that in this case, participating in the beta felt risk-free. We have had a great experience with this product throughout the years, and we are impressed with how Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 Small Business Edition continues to completely protect our business information.”
-- Paul Shager, Sales Manager, Sea-Way Marine
  • “Symantec Endpoint Protection  Small Business Edition protects our case workers while they are out in the field. Their laptops contain sensitive information, and the new protection features offered in the beta have enabled The Arc to save both time and money that would have been spent remediating infected computers.  Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 Small Business Edition has helped us simplify the management of our systems.”
--Linda Yurko, Associate Executive Director, The Arc of Greensboro
  • “Bringing security intelligence, internal threat reporting and real-time global threat information together in a single web interface that supports role specific views is critical to reducing operational security overhead and improves an organization’s ability to take immediate action against advanced persistent threats.”
-- Lawrence Pingree, Research Director - Datacenter Transformation & Cloud Security, Gartner

Symantec to Combine eDiscovery, Data Loss Prevention, and Encryption to Define Information Governance

Symantec Enterprise Vault 10 archiving software will help organizations improve management and eDiscovery of information on-premise and in the cloud

TORONTO, ON - May 4, 2011 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Symantec Enterprise Vault 10, Enterprise Vault.cloud, and Cloud Storage for Enterprise Vault to enable organizations to manage and discover their information with unprecedented speed, efficiency and scale, on-premise and in the cloud.  Symantec Enterprise Vault 10 software will add new integration with Symantec's data loss prevention and encryption technologies to archive and discover organizations’ information without compromising confidential information, in addition to allowing organizations to discover data stored in the cloud and from social networks.  Symantec's Software-as-a-Service-based Enterprise Vault.cloud will offer unlimited cloud storage for e-mail, with rapid search and access, for a flat fee per mailbox per month.

Click to Tweet: Symantec’s SaaS-based Enterprise Vault.cloud offers unlimited cloud storage for e-mail archiving: http://bit.ly/jZQl6b

According to Gartner, law firms and eDiscovery service providers will require their clients to adopt more formal information management processes to help reduce the costs and risks associated with discovery. Companies without an information governance strategy and archiving solutions will spend approximately 33 percent more on eDiscovery.[1]

“Information streams are evolving from email to social networks and archives are moving from on-premise to the cloud, causing IT administrators to lose sleep over managing  information and  lawyers to debate new retention policies,” said Brian Dye, vice president of product management, Symantec. “Symantec Enterprise Vault and Enterprise Vault.cloud removes the stress from IT and legal users with its best of breed archiving technology to allow greater control and visibility into the archives to reduce eDiscovery costs.”

Classifying Specific Emails

An important new feature of Enterprise Vault 10 is the Data Classification Service (DCS).  This new feature leverages Symantec's data loss prevention technology to analyze email content and metadata to automatically classify the email and assign the appropriate archiving and retention policy for that message or even flag the message to be reviewed for compliance reasons.  Classifications can also be used as filters to speed up the search and review process for eDiscovery. Additionally, customers who have implemented Symantec Data Loss Prevention can share classification policies to greatly simplify the automated classification of information. Enterprise Vault also adds new integration with Symantec’s encryption technologies to allow organizations to effectively classify, store, and discover encrypted information.

Social Media Archiving

Posts to an organization's publicly-facing social media outlets including blogs, Facebook pages and Twitter feeds are considered business communications that must be preserved according to the same industry-specific regulations governing the retention and discovery of  emails, instant messages and other electronic records. Through new partnerships with CommonDesk, FaceTime, Hanzo and Socialware, Enterprise Vault 10 automatically archives social media interactions for compliance, eDiscovery or corporate governance purposes. Organizations can comply with requirements for social media communications without restricting or banning the use of those tools.

On-premise, Hybrid, and in the Cloud

Recognized globally as a leading provider of on premise archiving products, Symantec will continue to enhance its Symantec.cloud email archiving service under the name Symantec Enterprise Vault.cloud.  This change will take place beginning in June 2011.  The service enables organizations of all sizes to address the challenges of email storage management, legal discovery, and regulatory compliance, with the ease and efficiency of a purely hosted archiving service. With no hardware, software, or plug-ins to install and maintain, this solution offers unlimited email storage and retention in secure enterprise-class data centers for a flat fee per mailbox per month.

Symantec also announced Enterprise Vault Cloud Storage for Nirvanix, a hybrid model designed to make using the cloud for archiving as easy as managing on-premise storage while also lowering costs. The Symantec connector for Enterprise Vault Cloud Storage for Nirvanix optimizes how businesses use the cloud to archive information.

Supporting Quotes:

·         “The new components of Symantec’s Enterprise Vault focus on solving what we expect to soon be new challenges in the overall archive and information retention space around social media content and advancing SharePoint management,” said Brian Babineau, vice president of research and analyst services of Enterprise Strategy Group. “While Symantec is addressing the future of enterprise collaboration, they are also adding automated classification, enhanced search and cloud capabilities to help organizations address today’s archiving challenges – the massive data growth.”

·         “Social media sites, particularly Facebook, have become such an important part of our marketing team's efforts and we don’t want to restrict access to those networks,” said Gregg Davis, senior vice president and CIO, Webcor Builders. “We've been an Enterprise Vault customer for a number of years, and it's been an invaluable tool for helping us manage email records and comply with eDiscovery requests. Facebook is quickly becoming as popular a communications tool for us as email, and we need the ability to archive social media interactions the same way do emails.”

·         “Social networking is pervasive across the financial services industry for building business relationships throughout roles including marketing, sales, and recruiting, and that presents the same demands for effective information management and discovery as email has required,” said Mike Williams, vice president of strategy, Socialware. “Partnering with Symantec enables our customers to overcome the barriers to leveraging social media while still satisfying the industry's strict requirements governing communications.”

·          “The integration of Hanzo Enterprise Web Archive and Symantec Enterprise Vault 10 and Discovery Accelerator provides organizations with the unique ability to combine business content flowing through websites, SharePoint, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social networks, all in one place.” said Mark Middleton, CEO of Hanzo Archives.  “Our joint solution, based around our Web Archive Connector, helps streamline the archiving process for organizations bridging into new media.”

·         “The addition of Symantec Enterprise Vault to our ‘One Click to the Cloud’ solution portfolio is an important move to address the long-term archiving of information to the enterprise-grade cloud,” said Scott Genereux, president & CEO, Nirvanix. “The cloud model changes the whole acquisition cycle and avoids the maintenance and technology upgrade costs. Symantec Enterprise Vault Cloud Storage for Nirvanix simplifies archiving right out of the box and leverages global cloud economics to positively impact business.”

Availability

Symantec Enterprise Vault 10 is scheduled to be available worldwide in the second half of the year.

EWS RELEASE: PEER 1 Hosting Brings IPv6 Enabled Network Online

PEER 1 Hosting Brings IPv6 Enabled Network Online

Customers assured of worldwide reach following $10 Million network investment for new protocol

VANCOUVER, May 3, 2011: PEER 1 Hosting, the global online IT hosting provider, announced the arrival of its IPv6 enabled 10GB backbone network today, bringing future-ready network reach to customers ahead of the imminent IPv4 address exhaustion.

PEER 1 Hosting’s network is one of the first supporting both IPv4 and IPv6 traffic, ensuring customers’ websites remain visible to all users around the world, irrespective of the networks or hardware they are using.

The IPv6 upgrade is the result of $10M investment over the last three years by PEER 1 Hosting and has included a beta phase, allowing Colocation and transit customers to test the backbone through PEER 1 Hosting’s network of datacenters. Offering both IPv4 and IPv6 network capabilities will allow PEER 1 Hosting’s Colocation and hosting customers to adopt the new protocol at their own pace, by providing a bridge to both worlds as networks transition towards IPv6 as standard protocol.

“Ping is one of the things we pride ourselves on and here is the perfect example of how we’re making sure businesses are accessible and online,” said Jag Bains, director of Network Operations for PEER 1 Hosting. “IPv6 is the next wave and we’re at the forefront of the transition. When IPv4 reaches capacity we’re ready to support our clients with the new protocol.”

PEER 1 Hosting is ahead of the curve in bringing IPv6 online for its customers, while industry debate continues to linger over standards and adoption. The PEER 1 Hosting backbone will also offer the added network benefits of the IPv6 protocol including increased addressing capacity, more flexible security, the ability to expand infrastructure and accelerate business.

and enable mobile workers

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 3, 2011 – HP today announced new imaging and printing solutions and devices designed to help small and midsize businesses (SMBs) and enterprise organizations enhance employee productivity, both in the office and on-the-go.

By making strategic decisions about their imaging and printing investments – including streamlining paper-intense processes – businesses can improve office efficiencies and uncover new revenue streams.

“In recent years, IT organizations have been under tremendous stress to control and reduce costs while also investing in business process innovation,” said Jeff Hayes, president of InfoTrends, a market research and strategic consulting firm. “Successful organizations realize they need to strategically invest across their entire IT infrastructure including business printing.”

Today’s announcement includes:

Expanding HP solutions suitable for the enterprise but scaled for SMBs and delivered by channel solutions partners.

Introduction of strategic technology partners Hyland Software and Nuance as well as new workflow solutions for healthcare and financial services enterprise customers.

New and enhanced multifunction printers ideal for the office environment and featuring ePrint capabilities.

“Customers need a partner that can help them solve complex business issues,” said Bruce Dahlgren, senior vice president, Managed Enterprise Solutions Business, HP. “Our new technologies and innovations are designed to transform paper-intense processes into simple digital workflows, allowing businesses to identify new opportunities for growth.”

Extending HP solutions to SMBs

HP solutions previously only available to HP’s enterprise customers are now available through select channel partners. These HP trained and certified partners will offer a portfolio of printing and imaging applications. New applications include;

Quotes

·    "As a facilities operator, the last thing I want is for my critical infrastructure to fail. InfoBunker prides itself on delivering ultra-reliable network services from an ultra-secure underground data center. It is what we are known for, and what Avaya data solutions have enabled us to provide corporate clients and government agencies with since 2006. Our Avaya switches are as reliable as the concrete used in our bunker -- they simply don't fail. With support for high levels of resiliency, a multi-terabit fabric interconnect stack and the virtualization capabilities of Avaya VENA, the Avaya VSP 7000 promises to help us drive further deployment in our data center and make it faster, simpler, and just as reliable."
--Jason McGinnis, president, InfoBunker

·    "Virtualization has transformed almost every part of IT today. With the tripling of end-user devices in the enterprise and the resulting increase in network complexity, it is hard to think of a company that hasn't been impacted by virtualization. With VENA, Avaya enables a consistent enterprise-wide architecture that lets IT decide how far and how quickly they want to extend virtualization across their networks. The introduction of the Avaya VSP 7000 is significant as the company continues to deliver against the Avaya VENA roadmap -- it gives Avaya a competitive edge with a complete portfolio of core and top-of-rack data center switches."

Breaking the Backup Window: A Plan for the Future

Symantec outlines its vision for backup, releases V-Ray for virtual machine protection and announces the upcoming release of new cloud and appliance backup solutions

TORONTO, ON – May 3, 2011 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) has outlined a plan to modernize the way organizations of all sizes backup, recover and discover their data.  Information explosion and the rise of virtualization have created unique pressures on the data center, while companies have the same or less time to backup dramatically larger systems and new, higher density virtual environments.  Meeting backup windows and successfully protecting data on a daily basis continue to be major pain points, putting recovery and business continuity at risk. While recent technologies have provided some relief to these problems, they have also created new challenges that impact both the recovery and discovery of information.

Click to Tweet: Symantec announces #FutureofBackup and calls IT admins to end old approach #SymcVision http://bit.ly/kKFBQw

“In our new world of virtualized IT, big data and electronic discovery, traditional approaches to data protection no longer work. However, organizations still want the ability to recover data with greater ease and lower costs,” said Deepak Mohan, senior vice president of the Information Management Group, Symantec.  “Symantec recognizes these challenges and is defining a new vision to help organizations smash backup and recovery windows, drive down costs and reduce complexity.”

“Server virtualized platforms are becoming the norm, and organizations are putting mission critical workloads into them and are deploying hundreds and even thousands of virtual machines,” said Dave Russell, Vice President of Storage Technologies and Strategies at Gartner.  “The industry is looking for the same level of visibility into and control of virtual environments as it has in physical estates, while reducing complexity."

Symantec’s Vision for the Future of Backup:

·          The End of the Dark Ages for Virtual Machine Protection:  Available today, Symantec V-Ray technology embedded directly into core Symantec NetBackup and Backup Exec gives IT administrators X-Ray vision into their virtual environments.  V-Ray provides transparency of backup images across physical and virtual environments with a single solution, ensuring all systems and applications are efficiently protected making it easier for customers to confidently expand their virtualized infrastructure. Symantec V-Ray puts an end to labor-intensive file and application recovery efforts, and drives down escalating backup storage costs with content-aware deduplication across both physical and virtual systems.

·         The End of Integration ComplexityAnnounced today, Symantec will extend its leading backup solutions, Backup Exec, to the cloud with Backup Exec.cloud, and a preconfigured backup appliance that will remove the need for hardware and software integration for small business end users. Backup Exec.cloud and the backup appliances are scheduled to  be available later this year and  continues to deliver on Symantec’s strategy to redefine backup deployment options with simplicity as the end result. Earlier this year, Symantec announced new NetBackup appliances for its enterprise customers.

·         The End of Snapshots in the Dark: While snapshots provide a quick fix for backing up a large amount of data, recovering individual files or applications from a snapshot can be as difficult as searching for a needle in a haystack in the dark as administrators have to recover the entire image.  Symantec plans to solve this problem by building a recovery model around snapshots that allows administrators to more easily recover individual files or folders, combining the best of snapshots with the best of centralized backup and recovery.

·         The End of the Backup Window: If an IT administrator  or IT service provider cannot back up data within 24 hours, that organization can lose business critical information.  Newer technologies such as deduplication  reduce the amount of data moved to address some backup challenges, but large amounts of data still require a substantial amount of time. Symantec plans to destroy the backup window and transform large-scale recovery with the introduction of a new technology that is anticipated to perform 100 times faster than backups today.

·         The End of Roll the Dice Recovery: Symantec also plans to bring to market self-service recovery and discovery technology for large organizations with NetBackup.  For organizations using backup as their primary tool to recover data, new search capabilities will provide better control and help them identify data that needs to be held for eDiscovery purposes.  Symantec Enterprise Vault will supplement those search capabilities as a complete archiving and eDiscovery solution for the legal and IT user.

Symantec to Extend Leading Backup Software to the Cloud and Appliances
Backup Exec provides small and midsized businesses with flexibility and choice to properly tailor modern backup deployments

TORONTO, ON – May 3, 2011 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced a new approach to help small and mid-sized organizations protect data through new delivery models including Backup Exec.cloud, Backup Exec appliances, as well as an enhanced version Backup Exec 2010 software.  For the first time, a company will be able to leverage the benefits of backup from Symantec as software, as a cloud service, or as an appliance, signaling the end of the complexity and delivering a fast, easy and modern backup infrastructure.

“Customers want choice in how they manage their backup environment, and Symantec is leading the transformation of the backup market with new appliances, cloud and enhanced software for Backup Exec,” said Amit Walia, vice president of product management, Symantec.  “The future of backup will be defined by simplicity, flexibility, and allowing companies to deploy a modern infrastructure that best fits their needs.”

Backup Exec 2010 Software Updates

·         Improved Virtualization Backup Performance: Available worldwide on May 3, Backup Exec 2010 R3 delivers improved backup and deduplication performance in virtualized environments.  The V-Ray technology embedded into the core solution gives customers X-Ray vision to easily see, protect, and recover their virtual machines with the same solution that protects their physical environments.  Additionally, Symantec’s Backup Exec Management Plug-in for VMware is now part of the standard agent for VMware providing Backup Exec management through vCenter.

·         New Security Layer:  Backup Exec 2010 now provides SSL support from the agent to the server, providing an extra layer of security for customers that transmit backup data across the WAN or to a private cloud.  The added security features help ensure that backed up data sent over a public Internet connection is secure.

·         Improved Archiving for Data Management and Recovery: Archiving complements backup by helping companies identify what to store, what to delete and when to move older data to secondary systems, while ensuring fast discovery and recovery of older data.  Symantec continues to streamline the integration between archiving and backup, helping customers to control storage costs and recovery times.  Backup Exec 2010 Agent for Enterprise Vault now supports Enterprise Vault 10 beta backup, recovery and migration.  Additionally, the Backup Exec Archive Option for Exchange now includes Virtual Vault, allowing users to access archived emails directly from within Outlook.

Backup Exec Cloud Strategy

·         Simple, Cloud-Based Backup: Expected to be available later this year, Symantec Backup Exec.cloud will be an ideal solution for small businesses or remote offices that want to offload their IT infrastructure.  The hosted backup service will  automatically protect the data on Windows desktops and servers with simple, online backup and recovery.  Furthermore, customers will benefit from an expanded Symantec.cloud portfolio of SaaS offerings, that provide integrated solutions for security, email management, and data protection.

·         Automatic Backups and Easy Restore: Customers will be able to quickly protect their critical data by streaming it over a SSL connection to Symantec’s secure, off-site data centers.  Backups can be triggered by file changes or run according to a set schedule, while modified files are protected continuously.  Should disaster strike, the service will help businesses stay up and running by restoring critical files to any service-enabled machine with just an internet connection.  Employees may also take advantage of individual file restore for every day file retrieval.

·         Predictable Pricing:  Symantec plans to offer predictable, subscription-based pricing for Backup Exec.cloud.

Backup Exec Appliance Strategy

·         Secure, Optimized and Simple: The new Backup Exec appliances, scheduled to be available later this year as part of a phased launch, will provide businesses with purpose-built, secure and easy to manage backups that run Backup Exec software.  Symantec will leverage its appliance model success within the enterprise segment to provide a tailored offering that meets the needs of its SMB customers and remote offices for larger organizations.

·         Easily Deployed, Consistent Architecture: Backup Exec appliances can be managed alongside other Backup Exec software installations.  The appliance form factor assures a consistent technology deployed across an organization, allowing administrators to manage their information from a data center, by a channel partner, or from other remote locations for  reliable on and off-site recovery protection.

Supporting Quotes

·         “IDC sees Purpose Built Backup Appliances (PBBA) as becoming a preferred deployment option for many companies and as a significant area for growth,” said Robert Amatruda, Research Director, Data Protection and Recovery at IDC.  “Symantec’s strategy to deliver Backup Exec as a purpose built backup appliance for SMBs makes a lot of sense, and as the market share leader in backup this new strategy has the potential to shift the backup landscape for many years.”

·         “Software-as-a-Service and online backup are important emerging options for small  businesses and are poised for increased adoption,” said Lauren Whitehouse, Senior Analysts at Enterprise Strategy Group. “Backup Exec.cloud promises to deliver simple, reliable backup that requires no on site hardware, and both small businesses and large organizations with remote offices could benefit.”

·         “The latest version of Backup Exec 2010 has significantly improved install times, increased the speed of our backups, and has become more efficient in recovering data,” said Patrick Manness, network analyst, Paul’s Hauling Ltd.  “Overall, I am impressed with the improvements and it has made my life easier.”

·         “Backup Exec is comprehensive in its feature set and easy to implement,” said Adam Miller, infrastructure services architect, Virginia Institute of Marine Science.  “As we move to a virtualized IT environment, I look forward to using Backup Exec that can see into both our virtual and physical servers for greater ease of use.”

·         “As a Symantec SMB Specialized partner, we understand that our SMB customers need cost-effective products and services that protect their critical information.  We have relied on Backup Exec for years to protect our customers' data in both physical and virtual environments,” said Dave Irvine, President and CEO, Irvine Consulting Services.  “There is no one-sized-fits-all approach, and Symantec is the only major backup vendor that delivers the flexibility and choice for our customers' backup delivery models including software,  appliance, or cloud-based solution - all with deep support for virtual environments.”

Survey Results: Oracle Next Steps & Will They Work?

Gabriel Consulting Unveils Key Findings of New Oracle Survey

Customers speak out on what they expect next from Oracle; will potential Oracle moves pay off?

BEAVERTON, Oregon May 2, 2011 -- Gabriel Consulting Group (GCG), an independent analyst firm, today released more key findings from its “What’s Up With Oracle?” survey, which is focused on Oracle’s recent decision to discontinue porting new versions of its software to Intel’s Itanium processor. The survey was conducted among enterprise IT professionals responsible for data centers of all sizes. There are 450 respondents; 94% are current Oracle customers.

Survey results released today cover the sections of the survey in which customers predicted Oracle’s strategic moves going forward and shared their opinions on how the company’s various options might harm or enhance its reputation. Results from the “What’s Oracle’s Next Move?” section include:

  • An overwhelming 85% of customers surveyed believe that Oracle will “do everything possible to persuade/force customers onto all-Oracle solutions.”

·         Customers doubt that Oracle will reverse course and port to Itanium again. Barely a quarter think they will, and nearly half think they won’t.

·         Half of all survey participants believe that Oracle will eventually withdraw support for IBM’s Power Systems.

·         Even more respondents (60%) say that Oracle will increase costs for RedHat and other non-Oracle Linux customers.

·         Fewer respondents (37%) say that Oracle is likely to increase costs for Microsoft customers.

“We were surprised by the large number of customers who see Oracle pursuing a grand plan that’s designed to put Oracle’s system and o/s competitors at a competitive disadvantage,” said Dan Olds, Principal Analyst at GCG. “Customers quite clearly expect Oracle to pull out all the stops to use their power in software to give their hardware a leg up. They really see Oracle pushing hard to get customers to adopt all-Oracle infrastructures.”

In the “Will Oracle’s Strategy Pay Off?” section of the survey, customers responded, “Help Oracle” or “Hurt Oracle” to each item on a list of potential Oracle strategic moves. Results from this section include:

·         General competitive moves not targeted at specific competitors, while not necessarily popular with the respondents, are seen as ultimately helping Oracle in the medium to long term.

o   Over 40% think it would benefit Oracle to release new versions of its software on its own platforms first.

o   Over 40% think adjusting license/support costs to gain an advantage over competitors would help Oracle.

o   The big exception in this category: “Do everything possible to persuade or force customers onto all-Oracle solutions” will hurt Oracle, according to more than half of all respondents.

·         Competitive moves targeted at specific competitors are seen as damaging to Oracle by an overwhelming number of enterprise customers. Between 60% - 70% say that the following will hurt the company:

o   “Withdraw support for IBM’s POWER processor or AIX”

o   “Increase costs for RedHat or other non-Oracle Linux”

o   “Increase costs for Windows environments”

“It’s interesting that the general, untargeted moves are seen as somewhat helpful to Oracle, while potential actions that single out particular competitors are judged as ultimately harmful to Oracle,” said Olds. “We think that when respondents looked at the targeted actions, it made them think about the non-Oracle platforms in their own data centers and how the Oracle move might affect their own organizations.”

“The accompanying qualifying responses lead us to believe that customers perceive these moves as Oracle trying to force them into actions they don’t necessarily want to take. If Oracle goes down these roads, it’s going to be interesting to see if customers react in the way that Oracle desires.”

The “What’s Up With Oracle?” survey was conducted independently by Gabriel Consulting Group and not sponsored by any vendor or organization.

GCG will be releasing more findings in the next few weeks. More information and detailed results are available here. Visit GCG on Facebook and follow Dan Olds on Twitter @danolds.
