Veeam Unveils End-to-End Backup, Storage and Recovery Architecture with HP StorageWorks

Fast, flexible and reliable disk-based backup improves recovery time from hours
to minutes for all recovery scenarios

COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 19, 2011 – Veeam Software, innovative provider of VMware data protection, disaster recovery and VMware management solutions for virtual datacenter environments, today unveiled an end-to-end backup, storage and recovery architecture with HP StorageWorks.

The blueprint includes Veeam Backup & Replication™, an award-winning data protection and disaster recovery solution that provides fast, flexible and reliable disk-based backups that protect virtualized applications and data. Combined with HP D2D StoreOnce Backup Systems, which leverage HP StoreOnce deduplication technology, the combined solution reduces backup storage requirements and slashes recovery time.

Veeam Backup & Replication performs fast full and incremental backups of virtual machines running on VMware vSphere™ to the HP D2D Backup Systems, which eliminate redundant data with HP StoreOnce deduplication software. This reduces overall storage requirements, resulting in significant cost savings. Veeam Backup & Replication automatically verifies the recoverability of every backup by creating a virtual machine (VM) in an isolated environment and running it directly from the backup file. It starts the VM, boots the operating system and confirms that applications inside the VM are running normally. Administrators know that the backups actually work—every backup, every VM, every time.

“This combined storage and data recovery solution provides exceptional value through technology innovation,” said Ratmir Timashev, Veeam President and CEO. “We have fully certified this solution so customers can deploy it with confidence and achieve outstanding and affordable data protection.”

“Customers know they need to back up and protect their virtualized applications and data, but are always conscious of reducing data center costs,” said Sean Kinney, Director of StoreOnce at HP. “The HP D2D StoreOnce Backup Systems provide a reliable and economical disk-based backup storage solution for Veeam Backup & Replication, allowing customers to achieve high availability of their virtualized environments, as well as recovery times measured in minutes, not hours.”

For more information about Veeam Backup & Replication and HP D2D Backup Systems, a whitepaper focusing on best-practice deployment for the solution is available at http://www.veeam.com/HP_StoreOnce.

Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus 2012 Public Betas Now Available

2012 Betas Raise Bar for Protection and Performance, Provide Insight Into Safety and Stability of Applications Before Installation

TORONTO, ON – April 15, 2011 – Today Norton by Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) released the 2012 beta versions of the award-winning Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security, which are now available for free download from the Norton beta website. The Norton 2012 betas improve on performance and protection in what are already the industry’s fastest and lightest security products. They include key security enhancements, including the ability to assess the safety and stability of an application before installation.

“As we’ve proven year after year, we are committed to arming consumers against cybercrime with the strongest protection possible, without slowing down their computers,” said Jens Meggers, vice president of engineering, for Norton products. “For the Norton 2012 release, our aim is to continue to raise the bar for both protection and performance.”

With the 2012 betas, Norton continues to deliver the strongest core protection technologies, without sacrificing performance. The betas feature Insight 3.0, the latest version of Norton’s exclusive reputation-based security technology, which leverages the anonymous software adoption patterns of millions of contributing Symantec users to automatically identify and block new malicious software. Download Insight, which checks every downloaded file for safety before it is allowed to run, has been updated this year to include information that lets users know if a downloaded application is likely to cause stability issues when they install it on their PC. Now Download Insight provides users with additional data they can rely on before installing an application, to decide whether to install  that application or look for a similarly safe, yet more stable application. The betas also include upgraded SONAR 4.0 behavioral protection, which monitors running applications for suspicious behavior to quickly detect and disable previously unknown threats.

In terms of performance, the 2012 betas are designed to maintain or improve upon Norton’s industry-leading benchmarks in installation times, scan times and memory usage.

The Norton Internet Security beta features a revamped Norton Identity Safe, with a streamlined interface, improved login and form detection technology, and the capability to store passwords in the cloud so they are accessible from any computer with Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security installed. Both 2012 betas enable consumers to conserve bandwidth by postponing non-critical Norton activity to a later time, particularly useful for consumers with limited data plans.

The 2012 betas include an updated user interface, which offers quick access to the Norton Cybercrime Index, alerting consumers to online trouble-spots and potential hazards, including the day’s most dangerous websites, the most hijacked search terms by cybercriminals, as well as top scams, identity theft and spam. The free tool includes expert news about the most dangerous threat of the day and advice on how to stay safe online.

Beta Availability

The beta is available for free public download now at: http://www.norton.com/nis2012beta or http://www.norton.com/nav2012beta. Norton beta testers are encouraged to share feedback and discuss their product experiences in our online Norton Public Beta Forum.

Symantec System Recovery Delivers Flexible Recovery of Physical and Virtual Systems

Symantec System Recovery Delivers Flexible Recovery of Physical and Virtual Systems

Symantec solutions provide comprehensive strategy to help customers remediate data, system and application downtime

TORONTO – April 12, 2011 Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced its strategy to provide organizations of all sizes with a tailored approach to solve their data, system and application recovery challenges to better meet stringent recovery time objectives and keep their business up and running. As part of its broader downtime remediation strategy, Symantec is also delivering new recovery updates and platform support to Symantec System Recovery 2011, formerly Backup Exec System Recovery, for both physical and virtual environments.

Symantec’s downtime remediation strategy includes an optimal mix of solutions to solve customers’ recovery challenges:

  • Symantec System Recovery provides complete system recovery in minutes, even to dissimilar hardware, bare metal, remote locations or virtual environments, to minimize business downtime
  • Symantec Backup Exec eliminates backup windows and helps customers meet recovery point objectives through granular recovery of physical and virtual environments
  • Symantec ApplicationHA enables automated monitoring and recovery for virtual applications running in VMware

“Symantec offers proven technology to help our customers recover data, systems and applications to avoid disruption to their business,” said Amit Walia, vice president of product management, Symantec. “Symantec System Recovery shortens the recovery time window with new features such as the ability to transform a USB device into a recovery disk and additional flexibility to the customizable recovery disk wizard.”

Symantec research indicates that disasters can have a significant impact on a business and organizations of all sizes are vulnerable to downtime. Symantec’s 2011 SMB Disaster Preparedness Survey found that the majority of small businesses surveyed are still unprepared to deal with a disaster and 54 percent of SMB customer respondents reported they have switched SMB vendors due to unreliable computing systems. Similarly, Symantec’s 2010 Disaster Recovery Survey, which surveyed enterprise organizations, found that the time required to recover from an outage is twice as long as respondents perceive it to be.

Available now, Symantec System Recovery 2011 adds the following new features:

  • All-in-one backup and recovery USB device: With new wizard functionality, customers can easily transform a USB device into a bootable Symantec System Recovery Disk and into a backup storage device, creating an all-in-one backup and recovery USB device to help reduce boot time and speed up the recovery process.
  • Enhanced centralized management: Symantec System Recovery Management Solution is a highly scalable solution designed to centrally manage large numbers of clients from a single management server. The Symantec System Recovery Management solution can now be installed to and hosted on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit environments.
  • Enhanced customizable recovery disk wizard: Additional flexibility has been added to the customizable recovery disk wizard with the option to select an ISO image as the source for a custom recovery disk. This is especially helpful for larger enterprise organizations that already utilize a customized version of the Symantec System Recovery Disk and would like to use it as the source for future modifications to their recovery environment.
  • Platform support: Symantec System Recovery includes updated support for the latest Microsoft Windows, Linux, VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer operating systems and applications

SAS Canada No. 3 on ‘Best Workplaces in Canada’ List

Recognized for its commitment to Environmental Sustainability, Employee Benefits and Community

Focus

TORONTO, Canada (April, 12, 2011) – SAS Canada, the leader in business analytics, is No. 3 on the 2011 Best Workplaces in Canada list, in the category for companies with less than 1,000 employees. SAS Canada is one of the top companies on the list, published by the Great Place to Work Institute Canada, because of its commitment to environmental sustainability, employee benefits, and for its dedication and focus to the community.

Earlier this year SAS Canada celebrated five consecutive years of double-digit growth announcing a 10 per cent increase in 2010 software revenue over the previous year.  In response to this growth, SAS also announced that it is adding approximately 25 new positions to meet the continuing demand for its solutions.

“SAS has always believed that our employees are the cornerstone of our business,” said Carl Farrell, President SAS Canada. “A commitment and philosophy to work/life balance and leading employee benefits is quite frankly good for business as these are the pillars that allow us to retain top talent and maintain the strong customer loyalty SAS is known for."

The Great Place to Work® Institute Canada was launched in 2005 and is the Canadian affiliate of the U.S. based Great Place to Work® Institute, the largest programme of its kind in the world. The institute surveys over 4,000 organizations in 44 countries annually, surveying a total of over 2 million employees across the globe annually.

“Promoting a healthy work-life balance is the way of life at SAS,” said Seta Kouyoumdjian, Senior Director, Human Resources for SAS Canada. “Flexible work schedules and excellent work environments contribute to the satisfaction and peace of mind of all our employees. Employees know they're working for a company that is committed to their long-term success, and they, in turn, are committed to the long-term success of the company”.

This list of “Best Workplaces in Canada” is compiled by The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business by the Great Place to Work Institute Canada.  The competition process is based on two criteria: two-thirds of the total score comes from a 58-statement survey completed by a random selection of employees, along with their open-ended comments about their organization; the remaining one-third of the score comes from an in-depth review of the organization's culture, including an evaluation of HR policies and procedures. This offers a rigorous representation of the organization from an employee perspective, and an overall portrait of the workplace culture. Together they provide crucial data relative to the five trust-building dimensions of a great place to work: credibility, respect, fairness, pride, and camaraderie.

In addition, SAS Canada has been named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers for nine consecutive years. Its environmentally friendly Toronto headquarters was LEED Silver certified in 2008 and the company continues to generate public recognition for its leadership in corporate sustainability practices. SAS Canada was honored with the Award of Excellence – energy conservation – at the 2009 Green Toronto Awards. The headquarters was also the winner of the Real Estate Excellence Award (REX) for Office Development of the Year in 2005.
