E-Plus, Nokia Siemens Networks build Germany’s first off-grid base station

Press Release
Munich, Germany– April 1, 2011

E-Plus, Nokia Siemens Networks build Germany’s first off-grid base station
Base station goes green by being powered with renewable energy

E-Plus, a leading mobile service provider in Germany, has become the first to operate a base station without using any German grid electricity. Instead, the site relies on a combination of solar and wind power, supported by fuel cell and deep cycle battery technology. Nokia Siemens Networks’ end-to-end Energy Solutions business set up the ‘green’ base station site. The environment-friendly operation of the site allows E-Plus to reduce its carbon footprint. Nokia Siemens Networks’ remote energy management enables the monitoring of all green energy components at anytime.

"With this innovative energy concept, we show how mobile phone transmission sites can become carbon neutral," said Rafal Markiewicz, chief technology officer of E-Plus Group. "This new transmission plant is part of our sustainability strategy. For us, building the first green base station site of this type is an important achievement and underlines our claim to operate the most efficient network in Germany."

“ABI Research has found that 86 percent of the energy needed by an operator is consumed by its networks, and we are always committed to innovation that enables energy conservation for the communication service provider,” said Rohit Kumar, head of energy solutions at Nokia Siemens Networks.

“E-Plus’ commitment to the environment is closely aligned with our own, and it’s great to see that the operator will achieve energy efficiency and zero CO2 emission during this site’s operation,” added Stefan Ilchmann, responsible for E-Plus business at Nokia Siemens Networks.

Nokia Siemens Networks has provided a solar tracking system, which follows the sun and turns the maximum surface of the solar panels toward it, to increase solar energy production for the site operation. Nokia Siemens Networks’ Green Energy Controller* manages the solar energy, a wind turbine, a fuel cell system and the deep cycle battery technology, which is mounted in SiteStar** cabinets for extended life time. The vendor has also extended its network management platform, NetAct, for network monitoring and optimization to enable energy management of this site. This platform also enables the operator to remotely maintain and install new software remotely, which obviates the necessity of visiting base station sites, thereby further preventing CO2 emissions.

Green site operation and remote energy management help E-Plus achieve zero CO2 emissions during the operation, supporting its target to increase energy efficiency by five percent by the year 2012, and by 20 percent by the year 2020. Electricity grid independent base station can be used at locations lacking an affordable energy grid connection to cover ‘white spot’ areas and increase the broadband penetration.

About the E-Plus Group
The E-Plus Group is the challenger on the German mobile communications market. Simple services tailored to customer needs and a major reduction in call and data charges can be traced back to the initiative of the third-largest mobile network operator in Germany. After revolutionizing the voice market for larger user groups now the company opens the mobile data market for the masses by its massive network roll-out and highly attractive low-priced data tariff schemes. As a result of innovative business models, modern structures and strong partnerships the E-Plus Group was able to significantly strengthen its market position and show a more dynamic and profitable development than the market.

Since 2005 E-Plus Mobilfunk GmbH und Co. KG has developed into a family of brands offering target group-specific services and thus breaks new ground in mobile communications in Germany. The flat-rate brand BASE and the mobile discounters simyo
and blau are market leader in their segments, while the original E-Plus brand offers a range
of services to its existing customers. The brand AY YILDIZ addresses the Turkish community in Germany. Vybemobile is aimed to appeal to young music lovers. The partners of the E-Plus group include many other brands, such as MEDIONmobile (ALDI TALK) and the German music TV station MTV.

More than 20 million customers are using the network of the E-Plus Group to make calls andsend text messages or data. The Group generates an annual revenue of €3.2 billion (2010) and employs more than 2,500 people (FTE) in Germany.

Notes to editors

*Nokia Siemens Networks’ Green Energy Controller helps to power telecommunication sites in the most efficient and environment-friendly way by using fuel cells or by dramatically reducing the runtime of diesel generators in cases where diesel generators are used. The Green Energy Controller reduces maintenance cost, and cuts down – in some cases it even eliminates – carbon emissions. The solution effectively utilizes available renewable energy sources such as sunlight and wind. It is part of Nokia Siemens Networks’ end-to-end Energy Solutions which offer the industry’s most comprehensive approach to energy efficient and sustainable end-to-end network rollout as well as modernization and management.

**SiteStar cabinet is a true innovation which significantly reduces the operational cost. This is achieved by keeping the batteries at stable temperatures, which can extend the battery life by factor 2 or 3. The rack has a very low power requirement of less than 40W at 35°C and thus consumes up to 95 percent less energy compared to conventional cooling systems.

A large majority of Canadians and Americans believebusiness leaders need to be open to take more intelligent risksin order to create innovation, a Microsoft Canada survey conducted by Harris/Decima revealed today.

Wanted: Canadian business leaders who innovate

Poll highlights need to transform ‘risk’ into true opportunity

March 31, 2011 @ 11:00AM

TORONTO – A large majority of Canadians and Americans believebusiness leaders need to be open to take more intelligent risksin order to create innovation, a Microsoft Canada survey conducted by Harris/Decima revealed today.

The survey polled senior and junior/mid-level Canadian and U.S. office workers to better understand their views about technology and innovation in the workplace.

The results were clear: 84 per cent of Canadians and 77 per cent of Americans believe business leaders need to take more risks to create innovation, while only 53 per cent of Canadians and 55% of Americans feel the company they work for is already driving innovation.

“Canadian business leaders must embrace an appetite for intelligent risk instead of shying away from it to stay within the comfort of status quo,” says Eric Gales, President of Microsoft Canada. “Now is the time to createorganizational cultures where risk is not a dirty four-letter word, but is encouraged as a valuable ingredient in fueling learning, creativity and inspiring innovation.”

The majority of office workers in both Canada (97 per cent) and the U.S. (96 per cent) also agreed that companies must embrace new technologies in order to remain competitive. Both Canadians (96 per cent) and Americans (99 per cent) agree that technology is shaping the future of how they work.

“The business world is in the midst of an exciting period of change driven by technology,” said Peter Aceto, Chief Executive Officer, ING DIRECT, commenting on the survey results. “For businesses to be successful in this environment, leaders need to promote a culture where employees at all levels not only understand their business but feel safe to experiment in it- to reach far across the divide - with no danger of the repercussions of failure.”

Added Gales: “What we need to do is overcome the misconception that risk automatically equates to danger. We need to transform the idea of risk into a true opportunity – whether in business, skiing down a mountain, or in improving Canada’s healthcare system. Business leaders need to empower their teamsand drive forward innovation to strengthen our economy and put Canada on the map.”

“Understanding the intersection of technology and innovation is critical to the future success of firms. It is particularly critical for larger organizations, that must not only embrace change and creativity, but most also "scale up" in order to survive global competition. This report is an excellent start toward understanding and infusing Canada’s corporate culture with the need to innovate and accept change,” commented Dr. Benson Honig, McMaster University, DeGroote School of Business, TeresaCascioli Chair in Entrepreneurial Leadership.

The next generation of innovators

The survey also found:

  • The younger generation of corporate/business workers entering the workforce are considered to be just as innovative (Canada 47%; US 46%) or more innovative (Canada 41%; US 39%) than today’s current leaders
  • The top reason for indicating the younger generation is more innovative than today’s current leaders is their experience, comfort, and understanding of technology (Canada 68%; US 80%)
  • Americans are more likely than Canadians to believe the younger generation is more innovative due to their experience with technology (80% vs. 68%), while Canadians are more likely than Americans to think the younger generation is more innovative because of their ability to learn and adapt (27% vs. 15) and their fresh approach (10% vs. 5%)

Survey: Using Harris/Decima’s online panel, 504 surveys were completed among a random sample of Canadian office workers and 501 surveys were completed among a random sample of American office workers. The survey was conducted from January 5th, 2011 to January 14th, 2011.

Ingram Micro Canada Now Offering Avaya Installation Services

Avaya Connect Channel Partners to Capture More Services Business Using the

Ingram Micro Services Network

Mississauga, Ontario – March 30, 2011 – Ingram Micro Canada, a subsidiary of Ingram Micro Inc. (NYSE: IM), is pleased to announce that Avaya installation services are now available to Avaya Connect channel partners in Canada through the Ingram Micro Services Network (IMSN).

By leveraging the proven expertise of the IMSN, new Avaya resellers can engage certified Avaya channel partners in a non-competitive environment to complement their team and meet the needs of their customers. Together, these partners deliver the professional services and technical support necessary to orchestrate and deploy Avaya solutions.

“Out of the gate, new Avaya Connect channel partners aren’t always equipped to offer the installation services expertise required to deploy Avaya solutions,” says Mark Snider, general manager, Ingram Micro Canada. “With the support of the IMSN, new partners can sell and support Avaya solutions day one. There’s no waiting period. By joining the IMSN and partnering smart, our channel partners can instantly expand their geographic coverage and technical capabilities around advanced solutions such as Avaya. It’s a tremendous value-added service that Canadian channel partners can only get from Ingram Micro.”

Partnering with members of the IMSN enhances a channel partner’s professional and technical services capabilities. It also takes away the risk and uncertainty channel partners face when bringing in a contractor to get the job done and enables them to go after bigger services deals and business they otherwise may not have pursued, says Snider.

Ingram Micro Canada became an Avaya value-added distributor (VAD) last year. As an Avaya Connect VAD, the Canadian distributor is authorized to market, sell and support the complete portfolio of Avaya Enterprise Communications Solutions – including Avaya’s unified communications, contact center, small-medium enterprise and data networking solutions – to authorized Canadian resellers.

In addition to the new installation services, Ingram Micro Canada offers Avaya channel partners access to business development, demand generation and technical support resources, as well as set up, custom configuration, certification training and pre- and post-sales support.

“It’s essential that Avaya and our channel partners be able to deliver world-class customer service through every link in the chain,” says Renzo Dipasquale, director of channels, Avaya Canada. “As new Avaya Connect channel partners build their skills and credentials, we are confident that Ingram Micro will support them with the extended services and resources they need to build a solid, customer-oriented business.”

Avaya partners interested in offering their services as part of the IMSN, and Canadian-based channel partners interested in becoming an Avaya reseller, should contact their Ingram Micro sales representative or send an email to avaya@ingrammicro.ca. To use the IMSN to grow their business and expand their reach, channel partners must be an active Ingram Micro reseller and enroll in the IMSN.

Riverside Medical Center Deploys LogRhythm for Centralized, Proactive Security and Systems Management

Suburban Chicago Hospital System Relies On Pattern Recognition Technology to Detect Security Threats, Operational Problems, and Meet Regulatory Compliance Requirements

BOULDER, Colo., March 29, 2011 – LogRhythm, the company that makes log data useful, today announced that Riverside Medical Center has implemented its award-winning integrated SIEM/Log Management system to proactively monitor activity across a distributed IT infrastructure that spans several locations to detect security threats, operational failures, and comply with regulatory mandates. LogRhythm’s advanced pattern recognition and correlation capabilities enable Riverside Medical to detect problems that would otherwise remain undetected.

Founded in 1964, Riverside Medical Center operates several medical campuses and nine community health centers in the south suburban counties of Chicago. Earlier this year, Riverside Medical Center was a recipient of the 2010 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ for the 5th year in a row (2006-2010) and ranked among the top 5% in the nation for patient safety. Riverside also partners with RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago.

“LogRhythm was the only solution that provided in-depth pattern recognition and correlation across all logs on our network and integrated with our existing infrastructure, including our networked storage,” said Sumit Sehgal, Information Security Manager, Riverside Healthcare. “By combining SIEM and log management capabilities in one platform, LogRhythm gives us an easy-to-use, proactive tool for monitoring, detecting, and addressing security and network problems. Plus, we no longer have to go through 10 systems for security audit and compliance reporting.”

Centralized Security Monitoring and Management

Riverside Medical is using LogRhythm to monitor nearly 250 Windows and Linux servers, as well as network and security devices, including routers and firewalls. Some of the key drivers behind Riverside Medical’s decision to select LogRhythm were:

• The integration of log management and SIEM (security information event management) in one platform
• LogRhythm’s unique pattern recognition and correlation capabilities
• Pre-integration with the McAfee security platform  (ePolicy Orchestrator)
• Ability to support Riverside’s existing networked storage arrays
• Pre-configured monitoring, alerting, and reporting packages for HIPAA, HITECH Act, PCI-DSS, and FTC Red Flag Rules compliance mandates

“Riverside Medical Center was struggling with issues we typically see in growing regional hospital systems – a tight-staffed IT department under pressure to keep its network secure and available, and meet increasingly stringent regulatory compliance requirements,” said Preston Lawhorne, vice president of sales for LogRhythm. “With LogRhythm, Riverside Medical gains centralized, uncluttered visibility across its distributed IT environment and can zero in on critical security and network issues that need immediate attention. We sparked Riverside’s interest with our ability to integrate where others couldn’t, but we won their business based on our pattern recognition, advanced correlation technology and ease of use.”

New Citrix NetScaler DataStream Technology Addresses Explosive Growth in Cloud, Mobile and Corporate Data

Key highlights from release:

·         NetScaler:  NetScaler is already firmly established as the delivery infrastructure of choice for most of the world’s largest consumer websites and cloud providers, touching an estimated 75 percent of all internet users each day.

·         The Challenge: Corporations of all sizes today are dealing with an explosive growth in data. This growth is driven by broader trends such as the rise of social networks, video and web, along with the expanding number of mobile and consumer devices being used in the workplace

·         The Solution: The new NetScaler DataStream technology addresses this challenge by inspecting data traffic in real time and applying optimization and security policies. It is the first networking solution of its kind to apply native data protocol and transaction intelligence to both structured and unstructured data:

o   For databases like Oracle® MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server, NetScaler with DataStream technology enables enterprises to scale-up their data infrastructure by offloading CPU and memory-intensive database server connections.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. » 3/29/2011 » To address the exponential growth in cloud, mobile and corporate data, Citrix Systems today unveiled a breakthrough new DataStream technology in its popular NetScaler® service delivery networking product line. NetScaler is already firmly established as the delivery infrastructure of choice for most of the world’s largest consumer websites and cloud providers, touching an estimated 75 percent of all internet users each day.  Leveraging its expertise in web applications, NetScaler becomes the industry’s first service delivery controller to extend the benefits of scalability, availability and security for the web tier to the data tier for both enterprise IT and cloud and mobile providers.

Corporations of all sizes today are dealing with an explosive growth in data. This growth is driven by broader trends such as the rise of social networks, video and web, along with the expanding number of mobile and consumer devices being used in the workplace. Providing visibility and business intelligence into this data is placing increasing demands on traditional databases, cloud storage models and unstructured file systems like Hadoop. Together, these trends have created an increasing need for solutions that can effectively scale, secure and optimize data infrastructures.

The new NetScaler DataStream technology addresses this challenge by inspecting data traffic in real time and applying optimization and security policies. It is the first networking solution of its kind to apply native data protocol and transaction intelligence to both structured and unstructured data. For databases like Oracle® MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server, NetScaler with DataStream technology enables enterprises to scale-up their data infrastructure by offloading CPU and memory-intensive database server connections. For cloud providers who experience three times the average client traffic of the enterprise database, creating a cost-effective, massively scalable database infrastructure is also a key benefit. The new NetScaler DataStream technology also helps companies scale-out their datacenters and private clouds by intelligently load balancing SQL requests to the most appropriate and available servers. It also allows customers to set policies that secure, control and audit data access in real time.

Facts and Highlights

  • Native SQL Fluency – Using its powerful new DataStream technology, NetScaler now inspects data traffic in real time using native SQL fluency and protocol aware policies for Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL database servers. For Microsoft SQL Server, NetScaler natively parses the Tabular Data Stream (TDS) protocol, enabling integrated policy and control with Microsoft System Center. For Oracle MySQL, NetScaler performs SQL-intelligent load balancing, policy control and comprehensive health monitoring to enable secure, large scale Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) deployments.
  • Database Server Offload – NetScaler with DataStream now offers SQL connection multiplexing, significantly reducing the number of SQL connections to backend database servers, and optimizing database infrastructure by enabling database servers to effectively scale-up to host more databases. The ability of NetScaler to offload SQL connection management provides a cost-effective means of database server consolidation and virtualization.
  • Cost-effective Scale-Out – By adding native SQL protocol support, NetScaler with DataStream technology now enables advanced load balancing and health monitoring policies to ensure the best performance, efficiency and reliability. By routing all database traffic to the optimal server, companies can even establish custom policies such as directing all read requests to a read-only database server pool. This capability also enables cost-effective high availability by applying advanced SQL health monitoring to ensure that SQL connections are routed only to backend database servers that are performing properly. When combined with a rich set of load balancing policies, including global server load balancing (GSLB), the active monitoring of database servers increases availability and provides organizations with an attractive alternative to expensive database clustering solutions.
  • Data Security and Threat Control – Using the new DataStream technology, polices can also be applied at the user level to control access to back-end database servers. This allows NetScaler to inspect all SQL transactions and perform SQL protocol validation and data access control. Data access events can also be audited and logged to meet compliance requirements. As a result, NetScaler now provides a holistic view of the web, app and data tiers to enable comprehensive security and risk management of data across an entire datacenter or cloud environment.

CA Technologies Offers RSA SecurID® Customers Opportunity to Trade their RSA Tokens for CA ArcotID Secure Software Credential

RSA Token Trade-In Program Gives RSA Customers a Secure, More Flexible and Convenient Option for Advanced Authentication

ISLANDIA, N.Y., March 29, 2011 – CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA) is offering all RSA SecurID® token customers an opportunity to trade their RSA tokens for CA ArcotID secure software credentials in a one-for-one swap.

For each RSA SecurID token, CA Technologies will provide a three-year enterprise license for the CA ArcotID software credential, including the CA Arcot WebFort authentication server. The only cost to the customer making the switch is maintenance. The program is in effect until Sept. 30, 2011.

“Hardware tokens are a security mechanism whose time has expired. The inconvenience of carrying an additional key fob or device for today’s increasingly mobile workforce is not practical, and the difficulty of remediation in case of a hardware token breach can be overwhelming,” said Ram Varadarajan, general manager for CA Arcot Security Solutions, CA Technologies. “For the past 13 years, the Arcot technology has delivered advanced authentication using secure software credentials as a proven alternative to hardware tokens. CA ArcotID, with nearly 30 million users, offers increased flexibility and simplicity of deployment, without sacrificing security.”

There are significant advantages to using the CA ArcotID secure software credential versus standalone hardware tokens for advanced authentication:

·         Simple deployment and management – The CA ArcotID software credential can be easily and securely downloaded and deployed using patented cryptographic camouflage technology. This is more efficient than a hardware token which must be manufactured, physically distributed to the customer site, and then delivered to the end-user. In addition, in the event of a security breach, a software-based authentication approach provides a speed advantage by allowing organizations to immediately reset the credential. Users would then self-provision a new, and potentially larger, private key the next time they log in. If a hardware token is compromised, the situation could require deploying a new token, which would require the vendor’s assistance and could be a costly, time-consuming and inefficient process.

·         Flexibility – The CA ArcotID software credential works across multiple applications and environments, and it scales to support millions of users. Organizations also have the flexibility to store the CA ArcotID software credential on any supported client device, such as a PC, notebook, tablet device or smartphone.

·         Uncompromised Security – The CA ArcotID software credential combines a standard x.509v3 digital certificate with patented cryptographic camouflage private key concealment technology to allow users to authenticate securely. In addition, each organization creates, manages and stores its own private keys for all its CA ArcotID users. CA Technologies holds no information about any individual software credentials, thereby reducing the risk of compromising customer data.

Customers who take advantage of this offer can benefit from a Rapid Implementation Service that includes basic workflows and templates for downloading the credential and server, and setting up a typical configuration. If a customer requires a more customized implementation, additional services are available from CA Technologies or its partners.

CA Technologies will host a Webcast, “SecurID® Breach: Restoring Strong Authentication for Your Applications,” on Wednesday, March 30 at 1 p.m. ET. Jim Reno, principal security architect, CA Technologies, will discuss authentication best practices and ways to help reduce risk and secure your authentication process.
