Nokia Siemens Networks launches Liquid Radio

Press Release

Nokia Siemens Networks launches Liquid Radio
Unique architecture allows network capacity and coverage to flow to where it’s needed

A new architecture for mobile networks, launched by Nokia Siemens Networks at CTIA Wireless 2011, is able to direct mobile broadband capacity to where it is needed most. Known as Liquid Radio, the approach enables a more economic use of network resources through sharing and redistributing capacity based on user demand.
Nokia Siemens Networks has also announced its innovative Flexi Multiradio Antenna System as part of the Liquid Radio architecture. The company expects to begin to deploy this architecture during 2011.

“Liquids are unconstrained, streaming to fill any gap or space,” said Thorsten Robrecht, head of Network Systems product management, Nokia Siemens Networks. “In the same way, our Liquid Radio architecture removes the constraints of traditional mobile broadband networks to address the ‘ebb and flow’ of traffic created by users’ movements across the network.”

At the heart of Nokia Siemens Networks Liquid Radio is the ability to respond to the fluid demands of today’s networkswith a technique known as baseband pooling. This approach centralizes the resources needed to undertake processing functions common to every base station in a given area. Baseband pooling helps to achieve a more cost efficient sharing of resources over a large geographical area.

Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio Antenna System is based on active antenna technology that combines antenna and radio part in one functional enclosure, built with dedicated power amplifiers for each antenna element. The active antenna allows beamforming – focusing a particular radio connection and directing it to a specific user – as well as handling of multiple technologies in one unit. Together with other layers of coverage provided by macro, pico and micro site configurations, beamforming allows capacity to be directed exactly where the user requires it, delivering up to 65% capacity gain.

The Flexi Race is the next evolutionary step in miniaturization. It will be the basic element to build next generation active antennas and future products to build micro and pico cells. Due to its compact size, the Flexi Race is equipped with additional intelligence and scaling options required for this type of deployments.

With its unique, broad product and professional services portfolio, Nokia Siemens Networks helps operators to build unified heterogeneous networks. This approach reduces management complexity and allows connectivity for different layers of the network in one unified network and user experience. This is orchestrated by the company’s Self Organizing Networks (SON) capability and its continuous evolution to fully support cognitive self learning and adaptive networks.

“We foresee demand for network capacity increasing to up to 1 GB per user per day[1],said Robrecht. “Not only will this require substantial network investments, but also a unique combination of base station sites for wide area coverage complemented by Wifi and small, compact micro, pico and femto cells. Nokia Siemens Networks Liquid Radio ensures that existing network investments are fully leveraged and that future investments deliver the return necessary to support today’s pressing challenge of maintaining and transitioning GSM, evolving 3G and introducing LTE and LTE-Advanced.”

Notes to Editors:

Nokia Siemens Networks‘ Liquid Radio architecture comprises three key elements:
·         Baseband pooling achieved via Nokia Siemens Networks‘ recently launched Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station enables centralized pools of over 10 Gbps baseband capacity to manage up to 100 cells dynamically via smart scheduling algorithms.

·         The new Flexi Multiradio Antenna System provides true active antennas and complements the market leading Flexi Multiradio Base Station family. With availability starting end of 2011, Flexi Multiradio Antenna System is the only architecture based on several distributed radio frequency components integrated in the antenna housing to genuinely cooperate as a single entity to enable advanced features like beamforming. Beamforming provides additional capacity exactly where it is needed, allowing up to 65% capacity gain.

·         Unified heterogeneous networks enable various network layers to be used as a logically unified network with automated management, seamless interworking and uncompromised quality of experience to the user. As modern mobile networks continue to carry most of the traffic for mobile broadband in the future, they are getting more complex with several bands and mobile technologies (like LTE, HSPA+, Long Term HSPA Evolution) and the use of smaller cells like micro, pico and femtocells. Also, alternative technologies like 802.1x WiFi are increasingly being used for mobile broadband capacity enhancement as well as the more traditional in-building coverage.

For further information on these technological innovations, please refer to the company’s websites on Nokia Siemens Networks Liquid Radio and Flexi Multiradio Antenna System.

Avaya Extends Enterprise Collaboration to Locations of All Sizes

New Avaya Aura® Branch and Midsize Enterprise Solutions, Plus New Conferencing Phones Offer Greater Flexibility To Cost-Effectively Bring Teams Together Using Multiple Modes Of Communication

March 17, 2011

Basking Ridge, N.J. -- Avaya, a global leader in business collaboration systems, software and services, today announced that employees in enterprise locations of all sizes can easily collaborate via voice, video and data with new Avaya Aura® branch and midsize enterprise solutions. The new and enhanced Avaya unified communications products offer greater flexibility to enable spontaneous, multi-modal collaboration among any group of employees – including branch, remote and mobile workers – with more value, greater simplicity and dramatically low total cost of ownership.

With today’s announcement, Avaya further delivers communications technologies that conquer the challenges of enabling highly productive collaboration among employees in any location of any size business. The new Avaya Branch solution, Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprises and  conferencing endpoints simplify and enrich person-to-person or group interactions across teams regardless of location to accelerate business outcomes and improve customer service. These highly flexible, easy to install, manage and administer solutions are also backed by Avaya’s Software Investment Protection Policy, making it even more cost-effective for customers to upgrade to advanced communications and collaboration tools.

The Avaya Aura Branch portfolio expands with a new, flexible gateway for small to midsize branches that adapts current infrastructures (H.323, PRI, etc) to support a SIP core infrastructure on a single platform.  Scalable to over 350 users per branch, the Avaya B5800 Branch Gateway offers a range of basic to advanced options and supports:

  • Centralized environments with applications extended from and managed at the Avaya Aura core with enhanced survivability in the branch.
  • Distributed environments with applications and call control delivered locally while centrally managed; for example, those typically found in real-estate or franchised business.
  • Mixed environments with both localized and centralized applications; for example, a local auto attendant application to provide directions, multiple languages and sales announcements while centralized applications enable video, collaboration and mobility.

The Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprise brings Avaya Aura applications onto a single virtualized server for easy installation and management, reduced TCO and energy efficiency for companies with 250 to 1000 users. The updated Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprise 6.1 now offers:

  • Avaya Aura Session Manager for management of all SIP endpoints
  • Avaya Aura Presence to share rich presence information between endpoints from Avaya and other third-party vendors
  • Avaya Aura Session Border Controller
  • An expanded platform for advanced collaboration, such as with the Avaya Flare™ Experience on the Avaya Desktop Video Device and Avaya Video Conferencing Solutions

New Avaya Conferencing phones – added to Avaya’s Unified Communications portfolio following the acquisition of Konftel earlier this year – include three new options for enterprise customers that deliver high-performance, rich features and simplicity at a highly cost-effective price.

General availability: The Avaya B5800 Branch Gateway is globally available this month; Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprises 6.1 will be globally available in April. Conferencing endpoints will be generally available in April and May.

The Avaya Software Investment Protection Policy provides Avaya customers with existing unified communications and contact center licenses who are upgrading to Avaya Aura solutions - including the new Branch and Midsize Enterprise solutions – with entitlements to cost-savings in two ways: Under existing software subscription contracts, customers can upgrade to current, like-for-like licenses at no charge; customers without subscription contracts can save between 25 and 80 percent on standard Avaya Aura upgrade pricing.

Quotes

Boyd Brothers Transportation, Elaine Maund, vice president, Information Systems:

“Each of our customers is assigned a dedicated team of employees and it’s absolutely critical we maintain consistency in those teams for the best customer experience. These employees may be located anywhere, but need to work as if they’re in the same building. With the Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprises, we can use video to address teams, support mobile, remote and home-based workers and more. It’s changing how we look at our business now that we’re seeing all that we can do and do differently.”

Xeta, Marty Lucas, National Sales Director

“While today’s business environment moves toward decentralization to get closer to their customers, an organization's satellite offices are expected to be autonomous yet have access to home office feature sets to improve customer service and stay connected with their extended employees. Avaya's B5800 Branch Gateway enables XETA's large enterprise customers to effectively extend enterprise-grade communications to their outlying branch offices in a robust and flexible manner. As a trusted advisor to our clients, we strive to bring advanced technologies and solutions to our customers and the B5800 gateway provides our customers the best in communications technology combining functionality and cost savings."

IDC, Rich Costello, senior research analyst, Enterprise Communications Infrastructure

"There's real market opportunity to provide midsize enterprises with functional, less complex, and easier to manage UC solutions. Likewise, branch office environments require flexible configuration options and things like local PBX and collaboration features for end users, along with access to centralized UC applications. The new Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprises and Avaya Aura Branch Solution address their targeted segments appropriately, nicely leveraging Avaya Aura communications features and functionality with effective pricing options for smaller locations."

BANK LEUMI PROTECTS CUSTOMER DATA WITH CHECK POINT DLP

Check Point Data Loss Prevention Solution

Upholds Customer Confidence and Corporate Reputation

CALGARY, AB – MARCH 16, 2011Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: CHKP), the worldwide leader in securing the Internet, today announced that Bank Leumi Switzerland, the international private banking center for the Leumi Group, has deployed Check Point’s Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solution– to secure sensitive data and address critical compliance requirements, while simplifying IT management. With a growing network of over 4,500 clients in over 80 countries, the bank requires a strong DLP solution that ensures it meets and exceeds government regulatory compliance standards and safeguards confidential customer information, such as bank account numbers, credit card data and Social Security numbers.

“A recent data leak at one of our competitors cost them several million dollars in lost business and raised concerns about the security of customer information within the banking industry,” said Daniel Brunner, head of information security, CISO at Bank Leumi Switzerland. “With Check Point DLP, we added an additional layer of protection to our communications policies, helping to ensure our customers’ information remains secure. We were able to deploy, monitor, and identify questionable communications within minutes.”

The bank implemented the Check Point DLP Solution to proactively prevent data loss and educate employees on the bank’s communications practices and policies. In addition, it required a solution that would easily integrate with their existing security requirements. By leveraging pre-defined policies that comply with government financial regulations, the Check Point DLP solution was easily installed and integrated into the bank’s network within one day. The Check Point DLP solution not only enables IT administrators to prohibit sensitive information from being sent, it also alerts and educates users when data is at risk – significantly reducing the number of potential incidents.

“Human interaction can be the weakest link in any security strategy,” said Brunner. “The Check Point DLP solution provides us with an additional line of defense that safeguards our most valuable information, customer data, in the event of human error.”

“Our comprehensive DLP approach enables our customers to actively prevent unintentional data loss with an effective solution that combines advanced content detection with user awareness technologies,” said Paul Comessotti, Canadian Regional Director at Check Point Software Technologies. “Our solution goes above and beyond just policies and enforcement, it actually involves and educates the user on best practice policies, helping businesses minimize the complexities associated with governance, risk and compliance requirements.”

Check Point offers several different options for deploying the DLP solution depending on customer requirements. Customers can choose from the Check Point DLP-1 appliance or the Check Point DLP Software Blade that can be deployed on all Check Point security gateways. More information on Check Point DLP can be found at:

http://www.checkpoint.com/products/dlp/index.html.

“We looked at other DLP solutions, but ultimately decided on Check Point because of its ease of deployment, feature set, and intuitive management interface. It’s an essential component of our security puzzle,” said Brunner.

The Check Point DLP solution can be purchased through the Check Point worldwide network of value-added resellers. To find a Check Point partner, visit:

* To build a 10.5 MW solar park in Thunder Bay, Ontario

* Says agreement in addition to two previous ones in December

* Says combined capacity of about 30 MW (Follows alerts)

March 16 (Reuters) - China-focused Canadian Solar Inc and SkyPower Ltd have signed a third agreement to build a 10.5 MW solar park in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The companies had agreed in December to build a 10.5 MW solar park in Napanee and an 8.5MW solar park located on Thunder Bay International Airport Authority land.

The construction of all three projects, with a combined capacity of about 30 MW, is expected to be completed by the third quarter, Canadian Solar said.

SkyPower was awarded 148.3 MW solar projects by the Ontario Power Authority.

Canadian Solar posted lower-than-expected quarterly earnings a week ago and said some Italian customers were seeking to postpone orders.

Many solar companies are facing delayed or cancelled orders as cutbacks in French and Italian solar subsidies have put projects there on hold.

Shares of Canadian Solar were trading down 3 percent at $11.47 on Wednesday morning on Nasdaq. They have lost about 24 percent over the last month. (Reporting by Mayuresh Tungare in Bangalore; Editing by Don Sebastian)

SC CONGRESS CANADA - Canada’s Largest and Most Prestigious Security Event Returns to Toronto - June 14 – 15, 2011

SC Magazine Announces Call for Papers – Closes March 31

TORONTO – March 9, 2011: After an incredibly successful launch of the SC Congress Canada last year, SC Magazine today announced SC Congress Canada 2011, the premier Canadian event for information security industry leaders. The 2011 SC Congress Canada will again feature cutting-edge sessions and dialogue coming from Canada’s top industry professionals from the country’s private and public sectors. Taking place in Toronto on June 14 through 15, 2011, public registration will open soon for the event.

SC Congress Canada is currently opening a call for papers from Canadian security professionals to discuss practical security solutions, advice and suggestions that participants can take back and put to work inside their businesses immediately. Speaking submissions will be accepted through March 31, 2011.

This must-attend security event will tackle real-world security challenges and offer solutions to help Canadian private and public security professionals thwart cyber attackers, safeguard critical assets, come into compliance with regulatory mandates, and ultimately contribute to the overall profitability of their organizations.

SC Congress Canada will feature timely breakout sessions where Canadian subject matter experts will address the most pressing IT security questions and challenges. The sessions will follow three tracks, Emerging Threats/Management, Technical and Editor’s Choice, including topics such as:

The WikiLeaks - What Happened and How to Prevent it

Wikileaks, whether you agree with their premise or not, took social engineering and very basic hacking to a new level. Learn what really happened technically as opposed to socially and how to prevent such crazy behavior in the future.

Stuxnet - When Will it End?
Cyber attacks, in general, get lots of press as they are interesting and are 'cool' to know about. But Stuxnet was a wakeup call for the power industry and, in general, those using certain SCADA systems. Learn what really happened here and why this is still a major threat today.

Threat of the Hour
Hear from a leading CERT team member what they and their systems are seeing as the latest most dangerous cyber threat, how it was found and what is being done about it.

Going Mobile
Consumerization of the enterprise is now officially in the rear view mirror. If your organization hasn't started mitigating the mobile threat, it will shortly be too late. Learn about today’s mobile threat landscape and how you can defend against it.

Selling Security to Management
The CISO needs a seat at the table to help guide an organization through the major technology shifts in today’s organizations. More often than not, however, this isn't the case. Learn how to make yourself part of the overall enterprise risk discussion and get a buy in from management.

“Last year, we held an extremely successful inaugural event and brought together Canada’s most esteemed security leaders such as Jennifer Stoddert, Scott D. Swartz, and Dr. Ann Cavoukian,” said Illena Armstrong, editor-in-chief, SC Magazine. “Since our first Canadian event was an absolute hit, with tremendous feedback from our attendees, partners and speakers, we decided to hold our second conference earlier in the calendar year to further support and enhance Canadian information security.  This year’s agenda is already jam packed with topics from Wiki Leaks and Stuxnet to mobile security and tips for selling your security program up stream. We look forward to seeing you at SC Congress Canada 2011, and providing the ‘know how’ that will help the good fight against cybercriminals and, ultimately, shape the Canadian security landscape.”

Keynotes and additional breakout sessions will be announced in the coming weeks. A full list of speakers, a conference agenda, media partners, sponsors and participant registration can be found at http://www.scmagazineus.com/sc-world-congress-canada/section/1576/.
