Compromised Android Malware Removal Tool Discovered -- Info from Symantec

Good morning,

After malware was found last week on the official Android Market, Google published an application – “Android Market Security Tool” – to undo the side effects caused by Android.Rootcager. Symantec has now discovered suspicious code within a repackaged version of the “Android Market Security Tool.”

Symantec found this suspicious version of the tool on an unregulated third-party Chinese marketplace. This threat appears to be capable of sending SMS messages if instructed to do so by a command and control server. Analysis of the application is still ongoing, however, of note is that the threat’s code seems to be based on a project hosted on Google Code and licensed under the Apache License.

For more information, please see this Symantec blog post: http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/androidbgserv-found-fake-google-security-patch. Also, please let me know if you would like to speak with a Symantec security expert about this topic.

PRESS RELEASE: Symantec Takes the Pain Out of Renewing SSL Certificates

Good morning,

Today, Symantec Corp. announced two new features designed to relieve one of the most common pain points of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificate management: the renewal process. Now, customers who have deployed VeriSign Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificates can fully automate the SSL Certificate renewal process for up to six years. The new features make Symantec the industry’s only Certificate Authority to offer this innovative way to renew and manage SSL Certificates.

Key highlights from this announcement:

·         When a certificate is up for renewal, the SSL customer simply pays for a new validity period – there is no need to generate a new CSR or to re-install for VeriSign SSL Secure Site and Secure Site Pro Certificates for up to six years for VeriSign Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates for up to two years.

·         To further automate the renewal process and help ensure SSL protection continues without interruption, Symantec’s VeriSign SSL customers can activate the AutoPay Renewal Service (AutoPay) upon their initial enrollment.

·         Express Renewal is available at no charge to VeriSign SSL and EV SSL customers who submit a minimum 2048-bit certificate signing request (CSR).

Symantec Takes the Pain Out of Renewing SSL Certificates

Express Renewal and AutoPay Features Make Symantec the Industry’s Only Certificate Authority

to Completely Automate Renewal Process

TORONTO, ON. – March 10, 2011 –  Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced two new features designed to relieve one of the most common pain points of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificate management: the renewal process.

Symantec’s Express Renewal feature eliminates the need to submit a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) or re-install a VeriSign® SSL Certificate when it approaches renewal time.  When a certificate is up for renewal, the SSL customer simply pays for a new validity period. There is no need to generate a new CSR or to re-install for VeriSign SSL Secure Site and Secure Site Pro Certificates for up to six years for VeriSign Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates for up to two years.

To further automate the renewal process, Symantec’s VeriSign SSL customers can activate the AutoPay Renewal Service (AutoPay) upon their initial enrollment. By automating payment for renewal, AutoPay service helps ensure SSL protection continues without interruption.

“With Express Renewal and AutoPay, Symantec has become the industry’s only SSL Certificate Authority to eliminate the pain of renewing certificates,” said Michael Lin, senior director of Trust Services at Symantec.    “The features greatly reduce the possibility of unexpected certificate expirations – and best of all, customers don’t have to do a thing. Website operators now have the same flexibility to pay for 1-3 year terms but with added ease of management. ”

Express Renewal is available at no charge to VeriSign SSL and EV SSL customers who submit a minimum 2048-bit certificate signing request (CSR). Customers can activate and deactivate AutoPay at any time, for any reason and without penalty, for as long as they hold their VeriSign SSL or EV SSL Certificate.

Symantec is the leading provider of SSL and EV SSL protection worldwide, with nearly 70 percent of the EV SSL market. More than 100,000 websites display the VeriSign seal by deploying VeriSign SSL, VeriSign EV SSL, or VeriSign Trust Seal solutions. As the most popular and recognized security mark in the world, the VeriSign seal is viewed by Internet users up to 650 million times in a single day.

Nokia Siemens Networks is the first to demonstrate easy upgrade to 400G optical transport

    Nokia Siemens Network

Press Release

Munich

, Germany – March 9, 2011

Nokia Siemens Networks is the first to demonstrate easy upgrade to 400G optical transport

400Gbit/s successfully transmitted with high spectral efficiency over 600km fiber

Nokia Siemens Networks has demonstrated how FlexiGrid* technology can upgrade optical transport networks to 400G (gigabits per second). The move is aimed to address the rapidly growing demand for bandwidth among operators today. Using FlexiGrid, the company has conducted the industry’s first trial of 400G data transmission over single mode fiber at a distance of over 600km. The trial was conducted at Nokia Siemens Networks’ R&D lab in Munich, Germany. Nokia Siemens Networks is demonstrating its optical transport networks at the OFC/NFOEC conference in Los Angeles, California during March 8-10, 2011.

Nokia Siemens Networks used FlexiGrid* and advanced digital signal processing for this demonstration. Once the solution is commercialized, it will allow 400G evolution for operators’ current 10G/40G or 100G DWDM multi-haul hiT 7300 platform and Next Generation Packet Optical Transport Solution (P-OTS)**. In addition, the increased utilization of fiber capacity will drive down costs.

“ With the increase in network traffic outgrowing revenue coupled with 100G reaching the limits of spectral efficiency, operators are looking to evolve their network beyond 100G,” said Uwe Fisher, head of optical networks product management at Nokia Siemens Networks. We have now reached another milestone, which demonstrates that our hiT 7300 paves the way for operators to easily upgrade their optical data transport networks and allow them to flexibly balance between speeds above 100G and the fiber length along with improving the efficiency of their fiber infrastructure.”

Nokia Siemens Networks’ hiT 7300 platform is part of the company’s unique Smart Transport*** offering that enables the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for operators. Nokia Siemens Networks’ Smart Transport is based on its globally available IP Integration capabilities to plan, install, provision maintain and where needed operate multivendor transport networks. In addition, it includes Nokia Siemens Networks’ own products such as DWDM based optical transport, optical transport network (OTN) switching, TransNet network planning tool and NetAct network management. It is also complemented by IP/MPLS routers from the leading companies.

The FlexiGrid technology incorporated in Nokia Siemens Networks’ hiT 7300 DWDM platform, allows the evolution to 400G networks by dynamically adapting the network’s wavelength grid to the needs of the high-capacity channels. This is done by using the network operator’s existing fiber infrastructure without causing any disruption in service.

Notes to editors:

* The new FlexiGrid technology incorporated in Nokia Siemens Networks’ hiT 7300 DWDM platform since 2011, allows greater flexibility in channel spacing, which is the minimum frequency separation between two multiplexed signals in a WDM network. At present, the channel spacing is hard wired and 50GHz by default . However, this is insufficient to achieve speeds that are higher than 100G. The FlexiGrid technology allows CSPs to dynamically adapt the wavelength grid to the needs of high-capacity transport channels, enabling speeds as high as 400G and beyond.

** Nokia Siemens Networks’ next generation packet optical transport solution (P-OTS) combines the intelligence needed to reliably send information, wherever needed coupled with the huge scale and speed of optical fiber communications. Next Generation P-OTS off-loads IP/MPLS routers connected to the optical transport network by switching traffic in the optical layer instead of the more expensive electrical layer switching by the routers.

*** Nokia Siemens Networks’ DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) solution, comprising of the hiT 7300 and TransNet DWDM planning and automation tool, provides a cost optimized, flexible and automated platform, thereby, offering a viable answer to excessive traffic demand, reconfiguration and cost pressure issues. The design principle of the DWDM platform (hiT 7300) is based on high modularity as well as high re-use, thus creating a single platform from metro to core. It also provides network operators with a new level of simplicity for commissioning and maintaining DWDM systems, driving out complexity while providing complete administrator control. Nokia Siemens Networks’ TransNet end-to-end planning tool provides optimal network design, guaranteed performance and automated configuration, resulting in significant OPEX savings, reduced outage time and procedural errors along with an exceptionally low TCO.

With over 100 DWDM customers around the world, Nokia Siemens Networks leads the way and provides a migration path to Terabit Optical Transport, It also provides scaling capacity for channels of 10/40/100 Gbit/s with its platform being open to 400Gbit/s and even more. The company has 12 hiT 7500 customers and 90 hiT 7300 customers.

Edmonton wins US$400,000 from IBM

Hi ~

Not sure if you’re aware of IBM’s “City Forward” website (http://cityforward.org/wps/wcm/connect/CityForward_en_US/City+Forward/Home), but it provides constituents, city planners and politicians with statistics and graphing tools - based on best practices from cities from around the world - to help planners improve air quality, decrease traffic, improve hospital emergency room procedures, increase mobility and public transportation, etc..

Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa are currently the only Canadian cities represented on the site. With the announcement of the US$400,000 win from Edmonton, below, Edmonton will soon join them.

Please let me know if you have any questions about City Forward and/or the Edmonton win.

Edmonton Wins in IBM “Smarter Cities Challenge”
IBM names Edmonton as first Canadian city in program that recognizes innovative use of technology

March 9, 2011

EDMONTON, March 9 - Edmonton is among the smartest cities in the world when it comes to the innovative use of information technology to benefit citizens. Technology giant IBM has named Edmonton as the first Canadian city---and one of just 24 worldwide---to receive an IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant of up to US$400,000.

The grants provide winning cities access to IBM's top experts to analyze and recommend ways to support successful growth, better delivery of municipal services, more citizen engagement, and improved efficiency through the creative use of information technology. IBM specialists will work closely with City staff on strategic projects.

“We are proud to be recognized by a respected global corporation as a smarter city, among a handful in the world,” says Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel.  “This recognition shows Edmonton is becoming known as one of the best cities anywhere for technological leadership, and we are positioned for even greater things.”

Edmonton City Manager Simon Farbrother agrees, adding:  “We are an ideal candidate for the IBM program, based on the leadership and momentum we have developed toward new and innovative ways of managing our City, for the benefit of all our citizens.   The recognition – and the technological support that winning provides – helps our efforts to transform Edmonton to achieve our vision of an increasingly vibrant, innovative, inclusive and sustainable city.”

Two hundred cities around the world applied for the Smarter Cities Challenge, and the winners include:  Chengdu, China; Delhi, India; Glasgow, UK; New Orleans, LA; Nice, France; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, among others.

IBM selected cities that made the strongest case for participating in the Smarter Cities Challenge.

"These cities are eager to implement programs that tangibly improve the quality of life in their areas, and to create roadmaps for other cities to follow,” said Stanley S. Litow, IBM vice president of Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs, and President of IBM's Foundation.  “We're excited to help cities tackle the most pressing challenges of our time."

The IBM Smarter Cities Challenge is a competitive grant program in which IBM is awarding a total of $50 million worth of technology and services to 100 municipalities worldwide over the next three years.
