Logicalis, an international provider of integrated information and communications technology (ICT) solutions and services, was named winner of the Outstanding IBM Systems Storage Solution Beacon Award in the IBM Beacon 2011 Awards competition. This prestigious honor is awarded each year to a select number of IBM Business Partners to recognize information technology excellence, commitment to skills attainment, industry knowledge and innovative solutions based on IBM products and services.

The Beacon Awards are an important element of IBM’s Business Partner recognition program. Chosen from among hundreds of nominations by leading industry journalists, analysts and IBM executives, Beacon Award winners have set the standard for business excellence, innovative technology solutions, industry knowledge and client satisfaction.

“For Logicalis, winning an IBM Beacon Award is as prestigious as the Packers winning the Super Bowl.  It speaks to our team’s ability to work together to be the best in the category for which we’ve been recognized,” says John Iffert, vice president, IBM Solutions for Logicalis.

The IBM Beacon Awards provide a wide range of industry recognition, increased visibility and promotional opportunities to award winners and finalists. This year’s awards recognized Business Partner achievements across 27 award categories.

The Outstanding Storage Solution award recognizes Logicalis’ achievement in deploying information infrastructures that help the company’s clients manage storage efficiency, protecting their valuable data while at the same time reducing administration and operational expenses.  To be recognized by IBM as a Beacon Award winner, Logicalis demonstrated aptitude with both IBM storage hardware and software products, with a specific focus on XIV, ProtecTier and Storwize V7000.  The winning solutions Logicalis developed are repeatable and demonstrate a strong collaborative approach between Logicalis and the IBM Storage sales and marketing teams.

Interview Opportunity: Watson Technology wins Jeopardy! but can also change our healthcare delivery

Subject: Interview Opportunity: Watson Technology wins Jeopardy! but can also change our healthcare delivery

Good morning Mary,

On Wednesday, February 16, IBM’s Watson successfully competed against Jeopardy!’s most successful contestants -- Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Watson represents a breakthrough innovation – a machine that rivals a human’s ability to answer questions posed in natural language – quickly, accurately, and confidently.

Following the culminating victory on Jeopardy!, IBM announced doctors from Columbia University Medical Center and the University of Maryland School of Medicine will work to take the same Jeopardy! playing capabilities of Watson and apply them to medicine in an effort to address some of the healthcare industry’s biggest challenges. IBM also just announced a research agreement with Nuance Communications, Inc. to explore, develop and apply the Watson computing system to healthcare.

We've already seen, in the research work IBM and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology are doing with premature babies in Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children's neonatal intensive care unit, how capturing and analyzing biomedical data can aid physicians' decision-making abilities and impact patient care.

Consider these numbers. Primary care physicians spend an average of only 10.7 - 18.7 minutes face-to-face with each patient per visit. Approximately 81% average 5 hours or less per month – or just over an hour a week -- reading medical journals. An estimated 15% of diagnoses are inaccurate or incomplete.*

In today’s healthcare environment, where physicians are often working with limited information and little time, the results can be fragmented care and errors that raise costs and threaten quality. What doctors need is an assistant who can quickly read and understand massive amounts of information and then provide useful suggestions.

Watson’s ability to deal with natural language across a wide collection of diverse information and make it more digestible for humans holds enormous potential to transform healthcare effectiveness, efficiency and patient outcomes.

The Jeopardy! win was not the end, but just the beginning of how technology can transform business and society with application that make sense of loads of data and provides, for example, doctors with a new tool to stay up-to-date on latest information and best practices to help with a decision. A decision that only humans can make, but who now will be armed with an assistant who never tires, or needs to sleep or eat dinner.

Please let me know if you'd like to speak with IBM about this exciting new development and how our healthcare system will benefit from these advances, I can be reached at 416.355.7425.

Thank you,

Deborah

Hello IT in Canada team,

We wanted to make you aware of a Mississauga, ON-based company called The Brand Felt Ltd. that is making use of VMware technology to virtualize its IT environment. It has used VMware vSphere Essentials Plus to increase application availability, minimize planned and unplanned downtime and simplify IT administration. The company's servers are now 100 per cent virtualized, as are the firm's mission critical applications.

The Brand Felt Ltd., family owned and operated since 1959, manufactures industrial felts, engineered pressed felts and various technical felts for the automotive, chemical, steel and furniture industries, among others. From its headquarters, the company's two-member IT team supports approximately 50 users and also runs retail web sites.

The company has found vSphere Essentials Plus to be a perfect SMB solution, one that has opened up opportunities to be leaner and more efficient. Above all, it has provided high availability and simpler IT management -- critical for an organization with a smaller IT staff and less flexibility to handle sudden upsurges in IT maintenance and support.

Please get in touch if you would like an interview with The Brand Felt Ltd. and/or VMware.

A short case study can be found below this message, or on VMware's site at: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/customers/VMW_10Q1_SS_BRAND_FELT_USLET_EN.pdf

Best regards,

Deployment environment
Brand Felt has virtualized its mission critical
applications and operates nine
virtual servers, hosting mail, Web and
Microsoft SQL Server services in a high
availability cluster with two VMware ESX®
hosts and one storage area network (SAN).

Case study:

Family owned and operated since 1959, The Brand Felt Ltd. is a quality manufacturer of
industrial felts, engineered pressed felts and various technical felts for the automotive,
chemical, steel and furniture industries, among others. From its headquarters in Toronto,
Canada, the company’s two-person IT team is tasked with supporting approximately 50
users, as well as running retail Web sites.
Like many small to medium-size businesses (SMBs), The Brand Felt Ltd. faces the dual
challenge of maximizing IT resources and providing high availability and data protection
with minimal upfront investment. In an effort to stretch its IT dollars, the company
recently implemented a comprehensive virtualization program. “We were approaching
a major hardware refresh cycle when our IT consultant suggested we consider
virtualization, both for costs and for the future,” recalls Michael Paquette, network
administrator at The Brand Felt Ltd.
The company considered Citrix XenServer and Parallels Virtuozzo but ultimately chose
VMware® vSphere™ Essentials Plus specifically for the newly released VMware High Availability
feature. “What really sold us on VMware was vSphere Essentials Plus. Finally, an affordable
high availability solution for SMBs, which was nonexistent up until now,” says Paquette.
Since implementing virtual technology, The Brand Felt Ltd. has virtualized approximately
90 percent of its IT environment, including all of its mission-critical applications. Within
six months, the company expects to be 100 percent virtualized. “vSphere Essentials Plus
has really opened doors in terms of high availability and simplified IT management. We
don’t see ourselves ever turning back from virtualization. It’s something we’re going to
be sticking with for a very long time,” concludes Paquette.
Results
• Increase application availability. “Users definitely notice the difference since we
implemented VMware. In terms of email and Citrix, everything loads up much faster,
so they’re able to get more done without calling me. And I don’t need to bother with
freeing up blocked sessions and database crashes and freezing,” says Paquette.
• Minimize planned and unplanned downtime. “Since implementing vSphere Essentials
Plus, we haven’t had any unplanned downtime,” comments Paquette. “Everything
we’ve experienced has met or exceeded our expectations. And it continues to do so.”
• Simplify IT administration. “Using vCenter is like going right through to any Windows
platform and taking Linux to a whole new level. We do everything through vCenter—
all of our HA management, our file-level copies. It’s a one-stop shop for all of your
virtualization needs,” says Paquette.
• Improved application performance. “The configuration of our virtual infrastructure
greatly improves application performance,” Paquette states. “For example, the IIS
Web server is on the same ESX host as the SQL server, which means that they’re on
the same network path; so there is very little communications traffic, and there is no
streaming through the LAN.”
• Simplify security. “In terms of security, we have more organization and more ability to
lock everything down from one central point, since everything is centrally managed
from vCenter,” comments Paquette.

Zain Kuwait customers to get full impact of individual communications experience

Operator successfully implements range of Nokia Siemens Networks’ customer experience management applications

Kuwait’s largest mobile operator, Zain will soon be able to offer its customers new and personalized services more rapidly. The operator has unified its customer data that was previously distributed across the network into a single database based on Nokia Siemens Networks’ One-NDS platform*. The deployment promises better insights into customer preferences, savings in capital and operating costs, and up to a six-month reduction in time to launch new services.

“A rapid increase in traffic necessitated a better understanding of customer behavior,” said said Fahad Al-Ali, network director, Zain Kuwait. “With our network simplified and customer data consolidated, we are equipped to accurately predict usage and capacity requirements, and offer new services such as fair use policy and tailored marketing services. We would like to thank the Nokia Siemens Networks’ team for its hard work and commitment on the successful and timely completion of this project.”

“The extent to which network operators can enhance customer experience is emerging as their key market differentiator,” said Jaafar Al-Shraideh, head of customer insight and experience in Nokia Siemens Networks’ Middle East and Africa operations. “We expect this project, which marks the first global launch of our multi-application services on the one-NDS 8 platform, to help Zain Kuwait deliver better pricing, customer care and network quality, ensuring improved customer loyalty and an overall improved end-user experience.”

Nokia Siemens Networks has upgraded the customer’s legacy Home Location Register (HLR) system with a next generation platform, and replaced the operator’s existing authentication, authorization and accounting system with the company’s One-AAA server to manage access to new, customized services. Both applications are connected to the centralized data base One-NDS. The deployment also includes Serve atOnce Activation Manager (SAAM), which will help Zain unify and automate access to the centralized data base independent of the application used. This will speed up the provisioning process of the multi-application data base and hence reduce the time-to-market for service launches.

For Immediate Release

Enhanced Mobile Portfolio from McAfee, Inc. Helps Secure Devices for
Work, Personal Life and Commerce

McAfee Announces New Mobile Security Suite, Business Ready Program and
Beta of McAfee WaveSecure Software for Android Tablets

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- February 22, 2011 -- McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE)
today announced that it is furthering its commitment to securing devices
for work, personal life and commerce with enhanced mobile device
offerings. These new consumer to business-ready solutions, which are
part of the McAfee mobile security portfolio, make it easier for device
manufacturers and service providers to differentiate their offerings
with security safeguards against device loss, data theft and malware.

McAfee is helping to set a new standard in mobile device security with
its new Mobile Security Suite and Business Ready Program. McAfee has now
bundled its WaveSecure and VirusScan® Mobile technologies as a single
licence for partners, allowing users to remotely lock, locate, back-up,
wipe and restore their stolen or lost devices, while at the same time
protecting them against malware threats that originate via email,
instant messaging and Internet downloads. This McAfee® mobile security
offering is available immediately to McAfee partners.

The McAfee "Business Ready" program, which is set to launch in Q2 2011,
will enable partners to pre-load or load McAfee® Enterprise Mobility
Management (McAfee® EMM™) client software with the McAfee Mobile
Security consumer client technology. With every device that is loaded
with WaveSecure, VirusScan Mobile or the mobile suite, McAfee will also
include the McAfee EMM client, making the device ready to be connected
to the enterprise secured by McAfee EMM software. This enables consumers
to purchase a device that is "business ready," making it easier for them
to bring their device to work, while also enabling McAfee partners to
better serve their consumer and enterprise customer segments.

Smartphones and Tablets Gaining Momentum
In International Data Corporation (IDC)’s "Worldwide Quarterly Mobile
Phone, Media Tablet, and eReader Trackers," December 2010, IDC predicted
unit shipments of smartphones and tablets would eclipse PCs in 2011. By
the end of 2010, IDC expects more than 21 per cent of all handsets
devices shipped to partners worldwide will be smartphones converged
mobile devices, the first time this has occurred. In comparison, 15 per
cent of all devices shipped in 2009 were smartphones converged mobile
devices.

"The proliferation of mobile devices has really determined the need for
protection that can span beyond the consumer to the enterprise," said
Todd Gebhart, senior vice president and general manager of small
business, consumer and mobile security. "Our goal is to help our
partners differentiate their device or their service, make it easier for
our consumer customers to bring their device to work when they're ready,
but rest assured that their own data is protected, and enable our
business customers to offer guidance to their end-users."

Addressing the Market Need for both Consumer and Enterprise Customers
McAfee Mobile Security offers a real-time defence against emerging
threats that target mobile devices, mobile services and mobile content.
McAfee WaveSecure software, which is available in 16 languages, has
already achieved more than one million downloads direct to consumers.
WaveSecure allows users to enjoy their mobile lifestyle without worry -
users can find their missing phone with alarm and location tracking,
prevent misuse with remote lock and wipe and preserve important memories
and personal data with remote backup, even from a lost or misplaced
phone.

McAfee has now entered the beta testing phase with partners and end
users for its WaveSecure™ Software for Android Tablets. This edition is
specifically designed to operate with Android tablets that have WiFi
connectivity. The product
will be available for partners and direct to
consumers by Q2 2011.

McAfee VirusScan Mobile software protects mobile devices from viruses
and malicious applications and helps keep critical communication
features always working. It automatically secures mobile devices by
scanning and cleaning files, emails, Internet downloads, text and MMS
messages and attachments. VirusScan Mobile software requires minimal
mobile computing and memory resources, allowing users to access their
devices' functions, without interruption. VirusScan Mobile software
solution is it also available as a Software Development Kit (SDK) for
OEM customers to use for embedded systems and has been shipped in over
100 million mobile devices.

McAfee EMM software enables enterprises to offer employees mobile
device choice, while delivering secure and easy access to mobile
corporate applications. With secure mobile application access, strong
authentication, high availability, scalable architecture and compliance
reporting via McAfee® ePolicy Orchestrator® platform, McAfee EMM
software brings the same level of control to mobile devices - including
employee-owned smartphones and tablets - that IT applies to laptops and
desktops.

Story Idea: Microsoft & VMware

Hello Folks,

I don’t know if the following would be of interest, particularly because the only Veeam customer I could put you in touch with on this particular issue I s U.S. based. But, the topic is interesting for those looking deeply into the virtualization space, so I thought I’d send it along.

Microsoft faces a big challenge when it comes to selling its management systems to new customers – the ubiquity of VMware. Unfortunately for Microsoft, System Center Operations Manager can’t natively manage the VMware environment – to SCOM, VMware is just a black box, and that’s a problem for Microsoft, because the customers they’re approaching want to manage their entire IT environment from a single solution.

Luckily for Microsoft, Veeam already has a solution called nworks MP that quickly and effectively gives MS SCOM the ability to peer into and manage the VMware environment. As such, Veeam has become a very important part of Microsoft’s management suite sales strategy. Last year, Veeam was a finalist for Microsoft Partner of the Year, a huge achievement for a small company.

I’d be happy to put you in touch with Veeam and also with Travis Backs, Network Administrator for Information Technology at AmSurg. Amsurg partners with about 1,200 physicians at across the United States on the development, management, and operation of more than 200 outpatient surgery centers.

About 85 percent of AmSurg’s server environment is virtualized with VMware. But since it used Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) to manage its servers, it had a big headache. When there was a problem, Backs didn’t know if he had problems with space, performance, I/O or some other issue.

To solve the problem, he turned to Veeam’s nworks solution, which integrates VMware with SCOM. Deployment took 30 minutes, and afterward, he had a single clear view of his entire environment. It’s a solution that Microsoft itself is heavily promoting, since it’s helping them solve a big problem for current and prospective SCOM customers.

Backs can also talk to the challenges and benefits of virtualizing almost all of his server environments.

Let me know if you’d like to talk to Becks and / or an executive from Veeam.

Best to all!

Backup Exec and VMware Work Together for SMBs

To help customer Design & Source Productions <http://bit.ly/eOLGOd> manage
their growing information, Baroan Technologies implemented Backup Exec 2010
and VMware data protection technologies.

"Prior to implementing Backup Exec 2010, backups were performed manually and
sporadically, which put a lot of Design & Source Productions' proprietary
business and customer data at risk,"
explained Guy Baroan, president of Baroan Technologies. "With a recent
network and server upgrade, Baroan Technologies helped Design & Source
implement VMware to significantly reduce their power consumption while fully
protecting their data with Backup Exec 2010."

"We already use 100 percent wind power at our headquarters.  By helping us
reduce power consumption without compromising the safety of our data,
Symantec Backup Exec and VMware helped us go one step further in making our
business more efficient, while still staying green," said Laura Tufariello,
founder and owner of Design & Source Productions.

Availability and Stability for a Complex Infrastructure

Data protection and energy efficiency are top priorities for
MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions <http://bit.ly/hATrGM> , which provides
heating, ventilation and air conditioning services mechanical design and
construction services alongside energy management programs to commercial
facilities.

"Since we are a green business, we are always looking for ways to minimize
physical hardware in the data center and reduce the power and cooling that
it requires," said Seth Henderson, Network Administrator, MacDonald-Miller
Facility Solutions.

"By deduplication and archiving their messaging system with Backup Exec and
Symantec Enterprise Vault <http://bit.ly/eRijXh> , we were able to
effectively help MacDonald-Miller better manage their data volumes and
storage hardware consumption while reducing energy in the data center," said
Lauren Newman, account executive, SHI International Corp.

Virtualization Key to Business Management

Electrical product supply company, Cetnaj <http://bit.ly/fjv7mQ>  has
300 employees throughout Australia and New Zealand and has been able to
efficiently streamline backups due to the deep integration Backup Exec has
with VMware.

"With Backup Exec, we have been able to reduce the complexity of data
protection for both physical and virtual machines, while greatly reducing
overhead in terms of power," said Tony Cuffe, operations manager Cetnaj.

"Backup Exec delivers comprehensive data protection to an unlimited number
of VMware virtual guest systems.  For a small business with several servers
like Cetnaj, this technology is essential," said Ian Irving, Sales Director,
