TORONTO, Nov. 7, 2012 /CNW/ - Saskatchewan residents now have access to phone, cable TV and Internet electronic bills from Access Communications through epost, Canada Post's digital mailbox. Access Communications is yet another local telecommunications bill to join the recently revamped epost.
"Now with more local mailers in Saskatchewan along with the range of national ones, epost is a convenient, one-stop destination to manage the bulk of major household bills," says Kerry Munro, Group President, Digital Delivery Network at Canada Post.
epost digital mailbox users in Saskatchewan have grown 26 per cent over the last two years. Among Canadians living in the Prairies, only three in 10 get all their bills by mail. For those who have switched to online billing, nearly half (48 per cent) complain that they have to keep track of too many online passwords on too many sites. Forty-three per cent want a one-stop electronic bill presentment solution.
"Offering our communities more convenience and choice is important, especially when many of our customers prefer managing bills online," says Carmela Haines, Vice-President of Finance and Administration at Access Communications. "epost is an easy and secure way to consolidate your household business online."
epost offers one place with one login and password to view and manage household bills or statements. It also links directly to the major banks enabling seamless online banking for payment. Unlike email that can have privacy concerns, epost offers a high level of security that keeps personal and sensitive information safe.
epost is the largest bill consolidation solution in Canada. With more than 7.7 million Canadians having registered with epost, and more than 100 participating businesses, epost has a robust, safe and secure foundation that allows Canada Post to continue enhancing the scope of services available.
About epost
epost is the free digital mailbox that helps busy Canadians simplify their lives by offering one place, one login, one password to manage their household bills and essential documents. Fully integrated with your bank, epost makes it easier than ever before to consolidate and pay your bills. Bank-grade security protects sensitive information while reminders help avoid late fees. It also stores all bills and statements for up to seven years. epost allows Canadians to stay better organized, and save time and money.

Religion-driven IT will generate more than $40 Billion in software and service opportunities by 2017, according to Gartner, Inc. Religion is positioned to fuel IT innovation and growth in emerging markets. The dynamic of IT and religion will create a new industry, generating software and service opportunities.
“Religion has a great influence on high-growth regions such as Latin America, Africa, the Arab world and South Asia, thus compelling new entrants and incumbent IT providers to seek new opportunities with religious entities,” said Asheesh Raina, principal research analyst at Gartner. “Direct IT spending by religious groups is small compared with the influence of religion on the IT spending of other industries and enterprises.”
The convergence of religion and IT will present completely new ways of doing business and unconventional opportunities for IT entrepreneurs and innovators over an extended period of time. Some of the forces that compel IT as an industry to embrace religion are:
“Religion-based banking, equity trading, mutual funds, financial services and so forth (including Islamic banking, takaful insurance and the Dharma Global Index) require new applications, products and heavy software customization, thus creating a role for religion domain experts. The number of people visiting religious places (such as temples and shrines during hajj and other religious pilgrimages/tours) is growing and hence increasing the need for religious bodies to attain automation through IT to provide safe, secure and faster religious services,” said Mr. Raina.
With the global slowdown and with new business opportunities drying up for the majority of organizations and enterprises (including IT providers) in mature economies, there is a need to explore new markets and opportunities. This has led to the shift of focus toward fast growing emerging markets to seek growth, which is a significant way to expand customers and markets — albeit within different business environments.
The high religiosity index in emerging markets, IT becoming mainstream, and increased spend on religion due to economic development will all lead to a gradual shift toward religion-driven IT. Religion-driven IT is becoming a crucial test model for IT providers to gain a larger presence in these markets. In the next five years, the list of emerging markets will include Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Poland, Turkey and Argentina (all with high religiosity), and IT providers' successful execution of this model within the current set of emerging markets is key for a sustainable presence.
The role of religion in generating new business opportunities for the IT industry will continue to evolve and will benefit from ongoing convergence of traditional and emerging trends, with added support and findings from religion experts and sociologists.
“In the next four to five years, religion slowly but steadily will continue to drive and change the way IT is consumed today by generating a significant amount, and variety of, new IT opportunities and business models. A lack of standardization and nonavailability of skilled resources in this space will require IT to play a critical role, albeit while treading carefully,” said Mr. Raina.

MONTREAL, Nov. 5, 2012 /CNW/ - In marking the launch of Media Literacy Week 2012, Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart released new guidance to help Canadians of all ages protect their privacy while playing interactive multiplayer videogames.
The theme of this year's Media Literacy Week, organized by a Canadian not-for-profit charitable organization for digital and media literacy Media Smarts is "Privacy Matters," and Commissioner Stoddart took the opportunity to underline that the days of kids playing videogames alone or with friends on the old TV in the basement are largely over.
Today, while they may be playing in the basement, they're very likely doing so with others, whether they're friends from around the block or virtual ones around the world.
"As gaming consoles are now onramps to the Internet, we need to recognize that, like anything else that brings together personal information and connectivity, there are privacy issues at play," said Commissioner Stoddart. "Interactive gaming accounts are increasingly becoming linked to social networks while videogames today are also avenues for advertisers to youth."
The guidance, which can be found online at www.priv.gc.ca/videogames includes the following tips to protect privacy while at play:
"While it's clear that it's not only kids who play videogames these days, we can't lose sight of the fact that many children are gaming and that they are among the most vulnerable to potential privacy abuse," added Commissioner Stoddart. "As a result, we encourage parents to play with their kids so they can learn more about the virtual world's realities."
The Privacy Commissioner of Canada is mandated by Parliament to act as an ombudsman and guardian of privacy in Canada. The Commissioner enforces two federal laws for the protection of personal information: the Privacy Act, which applies to the federal public sector; and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), which applies to commercial activities in the Atlantic provinces, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Territories. Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia each have their own law covering the private sector. Even in these provinces, PIPEDA continues to apply to the federally regulated private sector and to personal information in interprovincial and international transactions.

New Cluster- and Flash-Enabled FAS3220 and FAS3250 Set Performance, Efficiency, and Scalability Foundation for a Dynamic, Always-On Agile Data Infrastructure
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 5, 2012 — Balancing the data infrastructure realities of today with the growth promise of tomorrow, NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) today updated its FAS midrange storage systems with the introduction of the FAS3220 and FAS3250. The new systems deliver a superior mix of industry-leading performance, capacity scaling, and value to create an infrastructure foundation that accelerates business growth.
Designed for stringent SAN and NAS environments, the new FAS storage systems help enterprises and midsized businesses that are consolidating operations onto a shared storage platform improve performance by up to 80% and increase storage capacity up to 100% over existing midrange products. Native support for high-speed, low-latency Flash and industry-leading nondisruptive operations provides organizations with the necessary foundation for an intelligent, immortal, and infinitely scalable agile data infrastructure.
“Most enterprises, despite uncertain economic conditions, continue to aggressively invest in technology leaders that can drive agility cost savings into their IT infrastructure,” said Brendon Howe, vice president, Product and Solutions Marketing, NetApp. “Our new unified midrange products are optimized for both mission-critical SAN and NAS environments, leverage technologies such as Flash and clustered Data ONTAP® to address today’s performance and capacity needs and nonstop operations, and are architected to scale for future needs.”
With NetApp® SAN solutions, organizations can double storage utilization, cut storage spending in half, and boost productivity across the entire business, while enjoying high performance and availability. NetApp’s award-winning FC SAN solutions show industry-leading performance for clustered storage. Customers using NetApp SAN technology experience storage efficiency through thin provisioning and data deduplication of up to 50% or greater.
Powerful and Affordable Midrange Systems Deliver Enterprise Scalability and Efficiency
The FAS3200 series is a flexible platform that can be tailored for virtualized, private cloud or traditional environments, requiring only a few terabytes of storage to over 2PB in a single system. When clustered, a FAS infrastructure can scale performance and capacity across 24 storage nodes. This architecture provides significant performance and capacity scale while delivering nondisruptive operations by enabling transparent upgrades, system replacements, and performance balancing.
Clustered Data ONTAP enhances industry-leading NetApp Data ONTAP storage operating system features by enabling high-availability storage platforms, such as FAS3220 and FAS3250, to operate as a shared pool of resources. This capability offers massive scalability and performance, simplified management, and the ability to transparently migrate application data. Data ONTAP is the number one storage operating system and—in a single, feature-rich data management platform—offers data protection, massive scalability, thin provisioning, deduplication, thin clones, Snapshot™ copies, backup, and disaster recovery.
To ease expansion and allow system customization, the new systems include up to three times the number of PCIe expansion slots, which can be used to support network cards, Flash Cache cards, and additional storage connectivity.
As with all FAS systems, the FAS3220 and FAS3250 enable companies to reduce disk purchases by 50% through a superior set of storage efficiency features that apply to both primary and secondary storage.
Optimized System Performance with Flash-Enabled Platforms
Both the FAS3220 and FAS3250 systems are designed to boost application responsiveness and performance by leveraging NetApp's powerful Flash technologies, all of which are designed to provide fully automated, virtual storage tiering. NetApp Flash Cache, which is a controller-based PCIe card, speeds data access through intelligent caching of recently read user data and metadata in the storage controller. No setup or ongoing administration is needed, and by adding NetApp Flash Cache intelligent caching, IT administrators can optimize storage system performance, improve storage efficiency, and reduce costs with an increase in I/O throughput of up to 75% and use fewer disk drives without compromising performance.
NetApp Flash Pool is a software feature within Data ONTAP that enables automated storage tiering across combinations of solid state disks (SSDs) and traditional hard disk (HDD) based on traffic patterns, providing better performance under load without requiring users to migrate data in demand. The Flash Accel™ software product leverages Flash technology on the server to deliver I/O throughput gains of up to 80% and average response time improvements of up to 90%. With support for “hot” data access at the server, as well as Flash-based storage caching with Flash Cache and Flash Pool, organizations can meet service levels and gain storage efficiencies in excess of 60% by enabling the right storage media to be used at the right time for the right data.
IT infrastructure, through speed, capacity, and reliability, is turned into a competitive advantage. Combined with NetApp virtual storage tiering, Flash also improves storage efficiency by enabling reductions in power, cooling, and data center space requirements.
A Building Block for Partners to Meet More Customer Requirements and Drive Long-Term Sales
The FAS3200 platform is designed for environments spanning traditional to cloud and enables partners to meet their customer-specific needs and foster long-term business sales. These systems address the needs of enterprises and midsize businesses alike with the agility to respond to customer needs dynamically and without interruption. The FAS3220 and FAS3250 provide the predictability, connectivity, and scalability to meet the many needs of the customer and manage growth with an intelligent, simple, predictable, and scalable platform.
To help customers maximize the technology advantages of the new platforms and generate higher ROI by managing cash flow and utilizing limited budgets more efficiently, NetApp is offering 0% financing for customers who are trading-up to the newly released FAS3200 systems. Promotional financing is made available to customers in countries and regions where NetApp Capital Solutions is available. Offer valid until 04/19/2013. Purchases of Tablets by Businesses Will Triple by 2016
Barcelona, Spain, November 6, 2012— The consumerization trend has hit IT as an unstoppable force, as 821 million smart devices (smartphones and tablets) will be purchased worldwide in 2012 and pass the billion mark in 2013, according to Gartner, Inc. Smart devices will account for 70 percent of total devices sold in 2012.“For most businesses smartphones and tablets will not entirely replace PCs, but the ubiquity of smartphones and the increasing popularity of tablets are changing the way businesses look at their device strategies and the way consumers embrace devices,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.
Gartner analysts today discussed the directions in mobile device technologies and management approaches at Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2012, taking place in Barcelona through November 8.
“In 2016, two-thirds of the mobile workforce will own a smartphone, and 40 percent of the workforce will be mobile,” said Ms. Milanesi. Tablets will be the key accelerator to mobility. Gartner estimates that in 2012 purchases of tablets by businesses will reach 13 million units and will more than triple by 2016, to reach 53 million units.
Smartphones have become truly pervasive in every aspect of an employee’s life. Gartner estimates that 56 percent of smartphones purchased by businesses in North America and Europe will be Android devices in 2016, up from 34 percent in 2012 and virtually no penetration in 2010.
“Today the wide range of brands and price points that the Android ecosystem is offering is winning over users. While Apple remains the heartbeat by which the market moves, Google has rapidly become its archrival,” said Ms. Milanesi.
The increasing penetration of Android in the enterprise will continue to pose challenges for the IT department and the CIO to ensure that security and manageability remain a priority. However, Android and iOS-based devices will continue to increase their presence in the enterprise side-by-side and in most cases instead of RIM. “As businesses are looking for a multi-device strategy and a rich application portfolio it is clear that RIM has a huge challenge ahead in regaining its key presence in the enterprise,” said Ms. Milanesi.
In the business market, Windows 8 will take the No. 3 position in the tablet market behind Apple and Android by 2016, with interest coming more from businesses than consumers. Tablets and convertibles will be the way into businesses for Windows 8. Gartner estimates that the share of Windows 8 tablets and ultramobiles in businesses will reach 39 percent in 2016.
Over the past year, we have seen consumer preferences shaping not only the vendors’ landscape but also the way IT departments need to think about devices in the enterprise with BYOD becoming a part of the devices policy. “In just 12 months businesses have moved from resisting Apple to accepting its devices in the organization. CIOs who balance workers' passion for Apple with the needs of IT will reap surprising benefits and prepare the business for entry of other consumer-market vendor technologies, as this is just the beginning,” said Ms. Milanesi.

The HP mt40 Mobile Thin Client is aimed at telecommuters and on-campus mobile workers who need to connect securely to a network to access files. With the HP mt40, an employee or contractor simply turns on the device and logs in to the secure network at the business, roaming the campus or at home. The worker can then begin working on even the most sensitive files, saving his or her work to the server—nothing resides on the device itself.
HP also announced that HP Device Manager 4.5, the latest version of HP’s powerful thin client management tool, will come preinstalled on the HP mt40 and future thin clients to help users easily configure and deploy HP thin clients.
A key new feature of HP Device Manager 4.5 is that it enables wireless imaging, allowing updates over the same wireless connection that the remote desktop infrastructure uses—so all HP mt40 devices can be can be accessed and imaged remotely.
“With the growth in telecommuting, as well as the rise in the number of workers who regularly travel between locations, a mobile thin client makes a lot of sense both from a mobility productivity and a security standpoint,” said Anneliese Olson, vice president, PC Solutions, Attach and Services, Asia Pacific and Japan, Thin Clients, HP. “HP now enables global organizations to equip workers with high-performing mobile thin clients that connect them to the cloud, from any location, all while greatly minimizing the risk of data loss.”
HP mt40 Mobile Thin Client combines performance, mobility and durability
The HP mt40 Mobile Thin Client is suited for enterprises that have deployed virtualization solutions from the major independent software vendors (ISVs)—Citrix, Microsoft, and VMware—for their desktop virtualization deployments. It’s also ideal for organizations that are considering moving to virtual desktops for their more mobile employees.
