CA Technologies Supports Windows Server 2012 with Data Classification

Company Extends Content Aware Identity and Access Management Helping Deliver More Precise Access Control for Windows Server

ISLANDIA, NY, September 4, 2012 – CA Technologies (CA: NASDAQ) today announced support for Windows Server 2012 Dynamic Access Control. Integrating CA DataMinder™ Classification with Windows Server 2012 gives customers more precise access control of their data stored on Windows Server, helping to improve information security, reduce risk and meet compliance mandates.

Documents stored on a server that were once classified as non-sensitive can quickly change to contain sensitive or classified information throughout day-to-day operations. CA DataMinder Classification scans, locates and classifies sensitive content stored within Windows Server 2012, including intellectual property, financial information and personally identifiable information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers and other employee relevant data. When used with Windows Server 2012 Dynamic Access Control, CA DataMinder Classification helps to deliver precise and fine-grained access control that enables business processes to continue while protecting the most critical information assets.

“Windows Server 2012 Dynamic Access Control lets customers define central access policies at the organizational level and lets customers control access to data and achieve regulatory compliance,” said Andrew Conway, Director, Product Marketing, Enterprise Client, at Microsoft. “CA DataMinder Classification addresses the dynamic nature of data. By combining the content classification from CA DataMinder with the access policies set in Windows Server 2012, customers can better protect critical information from inappropriate use or disclosure.”

This integration extends CA Technologies Content-Aware Identity and Access Management (IAM) product strategy, which helps protect critical data from inappropriate use or disclosure by controlling users, their access and how they handle information. CA Technologies first delivered capability for Content-Aware IAM by associating content and data policies with identities and roles managed by CA IdentityMinder™ (formerly CA Identity Manager). It continued its Content-Aware direction earlier this year with a security solution for Microsoft SharePoint that enabled CA SiteMinder® to use content classification information for more precise Web access control.

“A core focus for a security professional is to ensure the right people have the right access to the right information. But information changes more quickly than access rights, which can leave organizations vulnerable to sensitive data leaks,” said Mike Denning, general manager, Security, CA Technologies. “Organizations need a layered security approach where information about the data is used as input for access policies to more precisely determine whether a user should be granted access to information.”

SecureKey Selects Dell to Build Scalable, Private Cloud-Based Authentication Platform for Growing m- and e-Commerce Business

·      Designed and built future-proofed ‘data centre in a box’ with no legacy footprint

·      Virtualized environment allows for valuable savings in cooling and power consumption

·      Private cloud provides flexibility, reliability, scalability and 100 per cent availability

TORONTO, Sept. 5, 2012Dell announced an agreement with Toronto-based SecureKey Technologies to provide an end-to-end private cloud infrastructure designed to scale and grow with the online security company’s rapid expansion model. Combining Dell’s servers, storage, security, switches and VMware with Dell’s IT Consulting and Dell Deployment Services, SecureKey has created a cost-effective IT solution that allows the company to serve existing clients and scale quickly and efficiently as new customers and government contracts come on board.

SecureKey’s Credential Broker Service was recently launched by the Government of Canada to allow Canadians to use their bank authentication credentials to access online government services. A service of this magnitude requires a highly scalable solution that can accommodate a huge influx of customers in a short space of time. SecureKey’s private cloud environment and virtualized solution enables this degree of scalability.

SecureKey’s solution uses five Dell PowerEdge R710 servers, three EqualLogic iSCSI SANs for storage, Dell PowerConnect 10-Gigabit Ethernet switches to handle storage traffic, and the VMware vFabric cloud application. This infrastructure solution offers several clear advantages in terms of upgradability, availability and cost effectiveness.

·         The elastic solution makes it easy to add new compute, storage and networking capacity as the company expands its client base. No ‘forklift’ upgrades are required. SecureKey simply adds another EqualLogic SAN to gain additional storage capacity and processing power, without any compromise to performance or client service.

·         The virtualized environment means only five physical servers are required to handle the work of 80 virtualized servers. The resulting space and power savings are considerable – approximately one-tenth of what they would be in a traditional one-server, one-function environment.

·         The VMware private cloud architecture allows for 100 percent availability even during ongoing maintenance and upgrades. Services are simply switched to another server with no downtime or service degradation.

SecureKey also selected Dell SecureWorks to monitor incoming and outgoing networking traffic using SecureWorks Network IPS and iSensor network intrusion prevention appliance.

QUOTES

“It was an easy decision to partner with Dell for our technology infrastructure needs. Dell immediately understood our concepts and need for a private cloud-based platform. They offered a one-stop shop for all our hardware and security needs, were able to design and implement our solution quickly and efficiently and offered tremendous support services. Having the Dell name behind us gives us added credibility when competing for contracts, particularly in the government space. With Dell, we’re confident we could double capacity and accommodate another large customer with millions of users in just a couple of weeks.” - Scott Allan, Head of Infrastructure Operations, SecureKey Technologies.

“Our association with SecureKey Technologies is a true end-to-end partnership. We were able to work with them from the earliest stages to design and build a cloud-based data centre, bringing together all of Dell’s component parts and business units. We’re delighted to provide the technology infrastructure to support this Canadian success story as they continue to grow in the online security space.” - David Miketinac, VP and GM, SMB, Dell Canada.

Organizations Improve Business Performance with HP Application Performance Management Software

Organizations Improve Business Performance with HP Application Performance Management Software

Topics:Converged Infrastructure, Cloud, Strategic Focus: Software

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- HP today announced that organizations are using HP Application Performance Management (APM) software to significantly improve their business performance and customer responsiveness.

Vodafone Ireland—the country's leading total communications provider—and HP channel partner J9 Technologies are using HP APM software modules to proactively monitor the performance of their IT infrastructure and application offerings, such as cloud and mobile.

HP also announced that it was placed in the leadership position in the recent Ovum “Solution Guide: Application Performance Management” report, scoring at the top in the Ovum APM Rainbow Map.(1) Ovum cited HP APM’s capabilities in application performance testing and optimization, as well as predictive analytics, as helping it to achieve the top status.

“APM is in a growth phase at the moment, the result of transitions to new technologies, spanning web, mobile, cloud and virtualization,” said Michael Azoff, principal analyst, Software—IT Solutions, Ovum. “HP has a long history in the business services management space, and APM is a major offering in its portfolio. HP has the capability and opportunity to address these trends, as well as deliver one of the top-end solutions in the market.”

Vodafone Ireland increases IT service quality, decreases IT costs

Vodafone Ireland relies on IT to deliver critical business services—from executive planning to customer service—to more than 2.35 million mobile and fixed subscribers. Until recently, the company’s IT organization was juggling a variety of tools and processes, spending much of its time managing the infrastructure as opposed to developing new business services that improve customer experiences.

Vodafone Ireland selected HP APM software modules to monitor performance of applications across traditional, mobile, virtual and cloud environments. Within 18 months of deployment, the company has:

  • Achieved a return on investment of 300 percent
  • Realized annual savings of $769,237, including the retirement of third-party service-monitoring tools
  • Increased customer-satisfaction rating by 65 percent
  • Improved service quality by 125 percent across the portfolio

“Our IT Operations group was once perceived as introspective, reactive and technology focused,” said Shane Gaffney, head, IT Operations, Vodafone Ireland. “HP APM has enabled transformation of our IT organization and allowed us to shift from keeping the lights on to proactively managing applications performance.”

J9 Technologies improves manageability, reliability of applications for customers

J9 Technologies provides specialized IT services to leading technology adopters in North America. Its services include application development, implementation, application hosting and Software as a Service (SaaS). To help its customers maximize budgets and improve application performance and availability, J9 needed software that offered deep application diagnostics, enterprise-class event management and incident tracking.

HP APM allows J9 to work with its customers’ operations and development teams to pursue DevOps(2) opportunities that help efficiently test applications and identify key performance indicators used for monitoring. This enables the operations teams to quickly identify and resolve application performance issues, avoiding costly service disruptions and reducing IT spend.

“The success of our business depends on being proactive in ensuring that our customers can get the most from mobile, cloud and DevOps opportunities,” said Clay Roach, president and chief executive officer, J9 Technologies. “HP APM tools are enabling our customers to quickly adapt to technology changes and help prevent application performance and availability issues.”

HP APM is a key component of the HP IT Performance Suite, the next-generation enterprise performance software platform that enables IT management to improve performance with operational intelligence.

“As organizations adopt increasingly dynamic infrastructures using virtualization, cloud and mobility technologies, they must also ensure application performance does not negatively impact business performance,” said Matt Morgan, vice president and general manager, Product Marketing, Software, HP. “With HP APM, operations teams gain the necessary insight into every transaction, thereby reducing costs and ensuring peak application performance at all times.”

Additional information about HP APM is available at www.hp.com/go/APM and via the “ How to Use Predictive Analytics to Manage Cloud and Mobile Applications” webcast.

HP’s premier Europe, Middle East and Africa client event, HP Discover, takes place Dec. 4-6 in Frankfurt, Germany.

NEC Technology Enables the Design of High-Speed Big Data Processing Hardware in 1/50 the Time

NEC Technology Enables the Design of High-Speed Big Data Processing Hardware in 1/50 the Time- Technology enables processing content to be changed without shutting down systems -

Tokyo, August 31, 2012 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has developed technology that enables users to quickly and easily design hardware for the high-speed real-time analytical processing of big data, even if they do not have expert knowledge.

In recent years, expectations have increased regarding the analytical processing of big data, which provides added value by processing and analyzing large quantities of time-series data on a real-time basis. This type of processing has been launched in areas that include the automated trading (algorithmic trading) of securities companies' stock and the analyses of traffic by network providers. The utilization of this processing is also being considered in fields such as healthcare and public security. These industries require high-speed analytical processing for accurate information analysis, even as data volume increases. This processing must also flexibly respond to rapidly changing analysis requests.

The use of dedicated hardware is expected to accelerate the processing of big data by 10 to 50 times compared with processing using software. However, the development and implementation of new hardware has historically taken a significant amount of time, often requiring several months. Insufficient flexibility has also plagued hardware as it did not permit changes to content during processing.

"NEC's newly developed technologies permit the easy design of hardware dedicated to high-speed processing. In order to carry out data analysis, users simply input the required analytical processing content using SQL, a programming language used as an open interface," said Naoki Nishi, General Manager, Green Platform Research Laboratories, NEC Corporation. "This reduces the time for developing hardware from as much as several months to approximately 1/50 the time, or several hours. The technology also reduces the time required for rewriting the processing content to approximately 1/1,000,000 of the previous time, or from milliseconds to nanoseconds, allowing the dynamic operation of the system without shutting it down."

Main features of this NEC technology are as follows:

  1. Permits the use of SQL for designing hardware, reducing design time to approximately 1/50 of the previous time
NEC has developed design technology that permits the use of CyberWorkBench, a circuit synthesis technology for the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) owned by NEC, to automatically convert software designed using SQL, which is widely used for the analytical processing of big data, to dedicated hardware on FPGA. This permits users in charge of data analysis to design FPGA directly using SQL, a familiar programming language. This means that circuit design work by engineers is no longer necessary, and the time required for developing hardware, which conventionally takes several months, is reduced to approximately 1/50 of the time, or several hours.

  • Processing content can be changed dynamically without shutting down the system
NEC has developed a hardware processing mechanism that switches between data processing content instantaneously, while operating the circuit for the old processing and a circuit for the new processing in parallel. Previously, processing had to be halted for several milliseconds when changing processing content since the circuit for the old processing had to be reconfigured for the new processing. The newly developed mechanism reduces the shutdown time to nanoseconds, or approximately 1/1,000,000 of the previous time. This enables dynamic corrections and processing changes without shutting down the system.

  • NEC will continue to carry out research and development with the aim of providing the technology as a real-time big data processing solution using hardware by the close of the fiscal year ending March 2015.

AMD CTO Mark Papermaster Outlines Vision for “Surround Computing”

AMD CTO Mark Papermaster Outlines Vision for “Surround Computing,” Bringing an Era of Personalized, Adaptive and Responsive Environments to Consumers

AMD Charts a Course to the Next Generation of Computing Fueled by Ambidextrous IP Portfolios and Heterogeneous System Architecture

    SUNNYVALE, Calif.  —8/28/2012

In a keynote address opening the prestigious annual Hot Chips symposium, AMD (NYSE: AMD) CTO Mark Papermaster delivered a vision for the coming “Surround Computing Era,” and unveiled new processor architecture details which will enable technologies and design methodologies driving the next era in computing. Surround computing is an extension of pervasive and ambient computing trends and describes an environment where computing technologies are completely natural and seamless parts of daily life.

“Surround Computing imagines a world without keyboards or mice, where natural user interfaces based on voice and facial recognition redefine the PC experience, and where the cloud and clients collaborate to synthesize exabytes of image and natural language data. The ultimate goal is devices that deliver intelligent, relevant, contextual insight and value that improves consumers’ everyday life in real time through a variety of futuristic applications. AMD is leading the quest for devices that understand and anticipate users’ needs, are driven by natural user interfaces, and that disappear seamlessly into the background,” said Papermaster during his opening remarks.

Papermaster explained that the Surround Computing Era will rely on robust “plug-and-play” IP portfolios including central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), fixed function logic, and interconnect fabric. He also unveiled key details of AMD’s upcoming CPU architecture, codenamed “Steamroller,” while underscoring the benefits of the industry-standard Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) that enables software developers to easily assign scalar- and parallel-compute workloads to the most appropriate compute units, and therefore optimize power.

“The road that leads us to the Surround Computing Era will be no less challenging and every bit as exciting as the 20-year journey in graphics processing that brought gamers from ‘Pong’ to today’s modern game titles that feature stunning visual realism,” Papermaster explained. “It will take an industry movement to complete this journey, and HSA provides the clear path forward to enable this next generation in computing.”

Lenovo Expands ThinkServer Line with Low-Cost Rack Servers for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses

Lenovo Expands ThinkServer Line with Low-Cost Rack Servers for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses

New Collaboration with Hitachi Data Systems for Lenovo EasyManage Server Monitoring Software Complements Growing Server Portfolio

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., August 28, 2012 - Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (PINK SHEETS: LNVGY) today announced the expansion of its server portfolio with the new ThinkServer RD430 and RD330 rack servers. Designed to deliver workhorse performance for growing small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs), the new rack servers are supported by a comprehensive services portfolio designed for ThinkServer products, including warranty support upgradeable to four hour onsite 24x7 response1 and the ability to deploy custom Windows imaging and BIOS settings at the Lenovo factory. Lenovo also announced that it has entered into an OEM agreement with Hitachi Data Systems to deliver ThinkServer EasyManage, a branded monitoring solution built from Hitachi IT Operations Analyzer monitoring software. Designed to simplify the most frequent management issues for IT administrators, EasyManage is now bundled with all ThinkServer rack and tower server models, including the new RD430 and RD330.

ThinkServer RD430 and RD330 – Value Priced Scalability and Efficiency

Lenovo’s ThinkServer RD430 and RD330 servers deliver high performance, improved power and cooling efficiency technologies, and easy serviceability with rapid response professional services. Based on the Intel® Xeon® E5-2400 processor family, which deliver up to a three times performance increase versus the Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1200 v2 product family2, the new Lenovo two-socket servers are available in either 2U (RD430) or 1U (RD330) chassis configurations with tool-less rail kits for easy installation. Both servers feature up to 192GB of RAM deployable in 12 DIMM slots, and either 24TB or 8TB of hard disk storage capacity for the RD430 and RD330, respectively. Industry standard protocols and IPMI 2.0 compliant interfaces make it easy for customers to easily integrate the new servers within existing IT infrastructures.

Adding to their outstanding value, the RD430 and RD330 are energy efficient systems that achieve a 160 percent performance improvement in performance per watt compared to previous generation Lenovo servers. Lenovo’s Smart Grid technology provides power planning intelligence and scales Intel® Node Manager to the rack level. With Smart Grid, IT administrators can set power cap policies so the servers can dynamically respond to changing workloads, which helps increase utilization while lowering energy consumption and operating costs. Further enhancing the power efficiency of the ThinkServer RD430 and RD330 is a new chassis design that improves cooling efficiency by up to 20 percent and reduces fan power as much as 20 percent.3

Synonymous with the Think brand, the ThinkServer RD430 and RD330 also deliver exceptional reliability and durability with features including a new anti-vibration alloy design in the hard drive tray to improve fault tolerance, resulting in a 40 percent lower risk of failure due to vibration and shock issues. In addition, built-in redundancy reduces 90 percent of server downtime due to single point system failure.

“These new ThinkServer rack servers are designed for growing small and mid-sized businesses who need a low priced yet highly scalable and efficient rack server to build their IT infrastructure,” said Lu Yan, senior vice president, Think Product Group, Lenovo. “In addition to the substantial increases in computing performance and energy efficiency, businesses with only one or two IT staff members will also appreciate the manageability features that simplify server deployment and operation. The mix of built-in capabilities with high performance, efficiency and reliability yields a package that pays dividends in return.”

Lenovo ThinkServer EasyManage – Best-in-Class Capability for Lenovo Server Administration

To maintain peak performance, the ThinkServer EasyManage server monitoring and management tool now comes standard with all new ThinkServer products—including the RD430 and RD330. Working with Hitachi Data Systems, an information technology and IT operations software leader, ThinkServer EasyManage leverages the proven capabilities of Hitachi IT Operations Analyzer to provide a holistic view into the status of up to 1000 Lenovo server nodes. Priority features of ThinkServer EasyManage include:

Simplified Web-based interface that monitors the health of Lenovo ThinkServers and installed applications from a centralized dashboard, keeping administrators abreast of key performance indicators for server components including temperature, voltage, fan speed, CPU and memory utilization, and free disk space.
Agentless architecture with easy, wizard-based installation, discovery and configuration eliminates performance impacts while helping IT administrators proactively manage critical system issues and respond to critical events in real-time.
Change monitoring that uses server and device-level intelligence to monitor and record changes of the end-to-end infrastructure, helping to avoid service degradation or help prevent unscheduled downtime.
Scheduled monitoring with user-defined alerting allows IT administrators to define two different threshold levels based on their specific needs, helping to prevent unnecessary alerts while ensuring notification before a problem actually happens.

“Both IT administrators and end users expect their server infrastructure to provide maximum efficiency, availability and performance, regardless of the constraints commonly found on IT resources,” said Frank Amato, director, Global Software, Hitachi Data Systems. “By utilizing the flexible functionality of the award-winning Hitachi IT Operations Analyzer as the foundation for ThinkServer EasyManage, Lenovo provides a proven monitoring solution that helps simplify IT operations, improve service levels, and boost efficiencies tied to IT management time, cost and effort.”
