Report says it’s the “end of the digital beginning”; mobile advertising is the greatest opportunity and asks how companies will implement their mobile strategies

TORONTO — The Canadian entertainment & media (E&M) market will grow faster than the U.S. to 2016 primarily because of higher spending on Internet access and TV subscriptions, says a new report from PwC. The Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2012-2016 shows Canada’s E&M market growing at a 6.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) compared to 5.2% in the U.S through 2016.

But growth of Internet advertising in both countries will continue to be significant and will be highlighted by the ability to capitalize on mobile advertising opportunities, says the report. In Canada, mobile advertising will grow at a 42.6% CAGR, followed by other internet advertising segments including video (31.9%), banner display (16.8%) and search (13.5%). Other fast growing segments will be Internet access at 11.8% and TV subscriptions and license fees at 8.6%.

“Mobile advertising is still a small market but it’s soaring in North America. Between 2010 and 2011 the segment grew by almost 149% in the U.S. and 109% in Canada,” says Michael Paterson, a partner in PwC’s Canadian Entertainment & Media practice. “Given the amount of time consumers are spending on their devices outside of making phone calls, it’s glaringly apparent how much of an opportunity this advertising medium is.”

Over the forecast period U.S. mobile advertising is expected to grow slightly slower at 42.4% CAGR. Paterson says there are challenges in monetizing the amount of time consumers spend on their mobile devices and Canadian and U.S. companies will need to act fast to capitalize on the opportunities. “As networks are upgraded, new location-based marketing services are developed, and the capability to mine customer data improves, mobile advertising dollars will begin to flow.”

The report also shows that the overall advertising market was healthier in Canada than the U.S. last year, growing by 5% compared to 2% in the U.S. Over the next five years it’s expected that U.S. and Canadian advertising spending on a combined basis will grow similarly at almost 6%, driven in part by mega-sporting and political events such as the Olympics and elections – from US$184 billion in 2011 to US$245 billion by 2016. Internet advertising (wired and mobile), in-video game advertising, TV and out-of-home are expected to be advertising’s winners.

“The challenge for entertainment & media companies rests not only in monetizing great content, but the growing fact that consumers are now "king" and their desire for customised experiences and getting content on their terms will require transformation on the part of companies to keep up,” says Paterson. “Location-based-marketing, mobile technology and social media are and will continue to be the driving forces behind revenue growth.”

In 2011 entertainment & media spending in North America grew by 3.3%, the largest increase since 2007. The Canadian market grew by 5.7% in 2011 due to higher spending in Internet advertising (22.8%) and Internet access (17.5%). TV subscriptions, radio and out-of-home advertising were other big winners, each expanding more than 6%.

Faster growth is expected over the next five years with the overall North American market expected to reach US$658 billion by 2016 from US$508 billion in 2011. “We will see double digit growth from Internet advertising, and increases of 5% CAGR or more from segments that continue to be important to consumers and advertisers like Internet access, Internet Advertising, TV subscriptions, specialty TV advertising, music and out-of-home advertising,” says Paterson.

Consumer spending in Canada will increase at 5.3% CAGR to 2016, compared to 3.7% in the U.S.

Tipping points

This year’s Outlook shows some interesting Canadian tipping points that will occur over the next few years, especially for those segments which are taking advantage of digital revenue streams:

  • Internet ads beat out TV ads by 2014: Canadian spending on internet advertising will overtake TV advertising by 2014 and be 23% larger by 2016.
  • Video games overtake consumer books: spending on video games will overtake spending on consumer and educational books in Canada this year, to be almost 20% larger by 2016.
  • Music: Canadian spending on music rose 2% in 2011, the first gain in many years, thanks to the growth in the concert and music festival market and a slower decline in recorded music spending. As a result, and due to increased spending on digital music, overall spending will increase from now through to 2016 at 4.1% CAGR.

Key global stats from PwC’s Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2012 – 2016 also include:

  • Total E&M spending: Latin America will be the fastest-growing region over the next five years, while Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) will be the slowest-growing.
  • Total advertising spending: of the world’s 13 advertising markets above US$7 billion in 2011, the fastest-growing through 2016 will be China (14.6% CAGR), Russia and Indonesia (both 13.1 %) and Brazil (9%).
  • Total consumer/end-user E&M spending: of the countries above US$10 billion in 2011, the fastest-growing through 2016 will be China at a CAGR of 9.9%, followed by India and Brazil, both at 9%.
  • Mobile Internet access: during the next five years, India’s mobile Internet subscribers will increase at a 50.8% CAGR and spending at a 42.4% CAGR, the fastest in the world.
  • Internet advertising: China and South Africa will be the world’s fastest-growing countries during the next five years, with compound annual increases of 32.1% and 30.4%, respectively.

Basking Ridge, N.J.  – Avaya today announced that TELUS, a leading Canadian telecommunications service provider, has transformed its new employee training and onboarding program with TELUS Collaboration House.  The TELUS Collaboration House, built on AvayaLive™ Engage, is driving significantly higher satisfaction, better attitudes and faster time to productivity from new employees with greater efficiency and lower costs.

AvayaLive Engage, formerly known as web.alive, is a web-based, immersive collaboration environment that enables participants to use personalized avatars in a 3D environment to participate in online meetings, distance learning, training and recruiting.

TELUS continues to expand and hire new employees as part of its national growth strategy.  With previous methods of training producing less than optimal results, the company needed to find a way to relieve the cumbersome task of scheduling and significant investments in time, travel and facilities.

Using AvayaLive Engage, TELUS built the Collaboration House – a more cost-effective, efficient means to bring new employees into the company and get them excited and productive early in the employee lifecycle.  Since June 2011, more than 900 new TELUS employees have been trained and on-boarded through the Collaboration House and satisfaction rates have skyrocketed.  The program has been so successful that TELUS Collaboration House will soon launch a French version for new employees in Quebec.

AvayaLive Engage provides a full range of business tools, including audio and videoconferencing, customizable and easy to use presentation and graphics “containers,” document sharing and white boarding capabilities. Participants can join from any PC or Mac located anywhere they can get an Internet connection.

Toronto's up.time 7 Delivers Complete IT Dashboards for Greater Visibility and Control Across Enterprise IT Departments

NEWS RELEASE: up.time 7 Delivers Complete IT Dashboards for Greater Visibility and Control Across Enterprise IT Departments

New Easy-to-Use Network Performance Management Capability Rounds Out Deep Suite of Server and Application Performance, Availability and Capacity Management Tools

TORONTO – June 12, 2012uptime software, Inc., a leader in IT systems performance, availability and capacity management software for mid-market and enterprise organizations, today announced up.time 7, the complete IT dashboard for watching over servers, applications, networks, and IT services. up.time 7 delivers powerful, affordable and easy-to-use monitoring, alerting and reporting for unified performance, availability and capacity management across the enterprise datacenter.

Designed to help IT managers and network administrators keep networks performing ‘in the green’, up.time 7 now includes a deep suite of network performance management tools that provide visibility across all vendor switches, routers and other network devices – from a single view.

"IT needs to know immediately when problems start, why the network is slow, or if an imminent network failure is coming. Jumping between vendor-specific tools to find answers can waste precious time and be a frustrating experience," says Alex Bewley, CTO of uptime software. "With up.time 7, network performance issues or network devices with faults are highlighted on a single dashboard so you can always see what problems need your attention, all from a quick glance."

Better Visibility and Control of Multi-Vendor Networks

The dashboards included in up.time 7 provide complete network monitoring and analysis over the performance and availability of all routers, switches, servers and other SNMP-enabled devices (including Cisco, Dell, HP, IBM, Juniper, and more) right out-of-the-box.

"The ever-changing array of devices in use across enterprise-grade networks has made network monitoring more complex than ever," explains Bewley. "up.time 7 offers enterprise IT departments an easy-to-use, affordable and flexible tool that can handle whatever devices, regardless of vendor, that are thrown at them – with little set-up time."

up.time 7 also provides the flexibility that IT departments need to gain better insight into network performance issues before end-users complain about network slow-downs. up.time 7 is a highly scalable and extendable network performance suite that provides detailed bandwidth and bottleneck monitoring, alerting and reporting functions that send alerts on port bandwidth, errors, discards or latency issues directly to a network manager’s in-box or mobile device, before they impact mission-critical applications.

Availability

up.time 7 is immediately available from uptime software, and a free 30-day trial can be downloaded at: http://www.uptimesoftware.com.

Apple Previews iOS 6 With All New Maps, Siri Features, Facebook Integration, Shared Photo Streams & New Passbook App

Available to iPhone, iPad & iPod touch Users This Fall

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apple® today previewed iOS 6, introducing over 200 new features to the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and released a beta version to iOS Developer Program members. iOS 6 will be available to iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch® users this fall as a free software update. New iOS 6 features include: an all new Maps app with Apple-designed cartography, turn-by-turn navigation and an amazing new Flyover view; new Siri® features, including support for more languages, easy access to sports scores, restaurant recommendations and movie listings; Facebook integration for Contacts and Calendar, with the ability to post directly from Notification Center, Siri and Facebook-enabled apps like Photos, Safari® and Maps; Shared Photo Streams via iCloud®; and Passbook, the simplest way to get all your passes in one place.

“iOS 6 continues the rapid pace of innovation that is helping Apple reinvent the phone and create the iPad category, delivering the best mobile experience available on any device”

“iOS 6 continues the rapid pace of innovation that is helping Apple reinvent the phone and create the iPad category, delivering the best mobile experience available on any device,” said Scott Forstall, Apple's senior vice president of iOS Software. “We can’t wait for hundreds of millions of iOS users to experience the incredible new features in iOS 6 including the new Maps app, expanded Siri support, deep Facebook integration, Shared Photo Streams and the innovative new Passbook app.”

iOS 6 includes an all new Maps app with vector-based map elements that make graphics and text smooth, and panning, tilting and zooming incredibly fluid. New turn-by-turn navigation guides you to your destination with spoken directions, and the amazing Flyover feature has photo-realistic interactive 3D views. Real-time traffic information keeps you updated on how long it will take to get to your destination and offers alternate time-saving routes if traffic conditions change significantly. Additionally, local search includes information for over 100 million businesses with info cards that offer Yelp ratings, reviews, available deals and photos.

Siri, now available for the new iPad as well as iPhone 4S, includes language support for English, French, German and Japanese, and adds support for Spanish, Italian, Korean, Mandarin and Cantonese. Siri is optimized for use in 15 countries and helps you get even more done with just your voice, whether it’s finding the latest sports scores or making restaurant reservations. You also can ask Siri to update your status on Facebook, post to Twitter or launch an app. Additionally, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further with a new Eyes Free mode, enabling you to interact with your iPhone using nothing more than your voice.

Built-in Facebook integration is the best ever in a mobile device, allowing you to sign in once and post from Notification Center, Siri and Facebook-enabled apps, including Photos, Safari and Maps. Your Facebook friends’ information is kept up to date across all your iOS devices, automatically updating details in Contacts when they change, and scheduling events and birthdays in your Calendar. You can also “Like” content directly from the App Store™ and iTunes® and see what your friends recommend.

With more than 125 million users already enjoying iCloud, iOS 6 introduces new ways to share photos with friends and family using Shared Photo Streams. Simply select the photos you want to share, pick which friends you want to receive the album, and the Shared Photo Stream album is instantly available on their iOS devices, iPhoto® and Aperture® on their Mac®, via the web or even through Apple TV®. You and your friends can leave comments on or “Like” any photo in a shared album.

The new Passbook app is the simplest way to get all your passes in one place, such as boarding passes and baseball tickets. Passbook lets you scan your iPhone or iPod touch to use a coupon, get into a concert or check into your hotel. Passbook automatically displays your passes on your Lock Screen based on a specific time or location, so when you walk into your favorite coffee shop your loyalty card appears and you can scan it to buy a coffee or check your balance. Passbook can even alert you to last minute gate changes or flight delays at the airport.

Building on Apple’s commitment to provide innovative solutions for education and accessibility, iOS 6 introduces Guided Access. This new feature allows a parent, teacher or administrator to disable hardware buttons to lock an iOS device into a single app, especially useful for test taking or helping someone with a disability stay focused on learning. Guided Access also includes the ability to confine touch input to certain parts of the screen.

Additional new iOS 6 features include:

• enhancements to Safari, the world’s most popular mobile browser, such as iCloud tabs, offline reading lists, photo uploads and full screen view;

• support for FaceTime® calls over cellular networks;

• the ability to set up a VIP Mailbox, making it easier to quickly view messages from important people you designate as VIPs;

• the option to decline incoming calls with a quick message, set a callback reminder and enable a new Do Not Disturb option; and

• a whole new set of improvements and services specifically for iOS users in China, such as improved text input and built-in support for popular Chinese services including Baidu, Sina Weibo, Youku and Tudou.

Unisys Unveils New Suite of Mobility Solutions to Bring Order to Mobility Mayhem

Unisys Unveils New Suite of Mobility Solutions to Bring Order to Mobility Mayhem

New offerings help enterprises and government agencies manage, secure and support growing needs of mobile users

BLUE BELL, Pa., June 11, 2012 Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced the availability of its Mobility Solutions Suite of services. These services are designed to help organizations manage, secure and support mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets – as well as their applications – and lead to improved employee productivity and customer service.

The explosion in use of consumer devices is causing businesses and government agencies to rethink the way they serve a new generation of increasingly mobile employees, customers and constituents. CIOs and enterprise IT departments are quickly being forced to adopt cost-effective ways to manage and support mobile end users while maintaining the security of sensitive, mission-critical corporate data and resources.

“The mobility revolution is changing the way work gets done, and how people connect with data and with each other, and it’s changing what people expect from product and service providers, their employers and their governments,” said Terry Hartmann, vice president, global security solutions, Unisys. “Organizations need to move quickly to respond to these new requirements or risk being left behind. Our new services are designed to help reduce the complexity of enterprise mobile access, security and support, and guide clients on how to take advantage of new opportunities to transform the user experience.”

Building on Unisys’ experience in providing end-user IT support as well as security and application modernization services, Unisys Mobility Solutions help organizations address those challenges. Unisys consultants work with clients to assess their employees’ and customers’ mobile interactions; build an overall mobility framework; modernize and develop mobile applications; develop consistent policies for mobile device usage; manage access to enterprise data and resources to provide real-time support for end users on the go; and help organizations plan for new growth opportunities.

The Unisys Mobility Solutions set includes the following services:

Mobility Assessment Services

Unisys consultants work with clients to assess how their employees and customers currently use mobile devices to interact with the enterprise and how the organization could adapt its business processes to better serve mobile workers and clients. Unisys assessment services include an overview of the current state of the infrastructure including mobile device management (MDM) processes; a gap analysis that outlines specific threats and opportunities for improvement: and a roadmap for closing the gaps and securely integrating mobile users into the enterprise.

Mobile Application Development Services

Drawing on long experience in secure, mission-critical applications, Unisys works with organizations to modernize and port their legacy applications to mobile devices, as well as create innovative new mobile applications. Key security features and application performance monitoring are designed into each mobile application, along with capabilities that allow applications to run on multiple devices and platforms.

Mobile User Authentication Services

According to the Unisys Security Index - a global survey of consumer security attitudes and concerns - people consistently view identity theft as the top threat to their security. To address these concerns, Unisys Mobile User Authentication Services help enterprises protect business-critical resources by authenticating users’ identities based on multiple factors such as passwords, location or biometrics which leverage inbuilt mobile device cameras and microphones. Based on these and other factors, mobile users can be granted or denied access to web portals, corporate applications or physical checkpoints. The organization can require different authentication methods for different people, depending on user roles, usage patterns and the type of transaction they are undertaking.

MyWork Services for Mobile

Unisys MyWork Services for Mobile are subscription-based managed services designed to help an IT service desk operation improve the productivity and uptime of mobile end users through a dedicated and complete mobile device help desk. MyWork Services for Mobile enables IT support teams to enforce policies for managing mobile devices, minimize risk and enhance security for end users, and track mobile assets and data. The Unisys service provides dedicated support for mobile users without the need for clients’ IT organizations to buy or install on-premise MDM software, and eliminates the challenge for IT organizations to stay current with training on the growing matrix of mobile operating system options and devices.

Comprising Unisys MyWork Services for Mobile are:

  • Mobile Device Management. These services help organizations deploy and manage employee-owned and company-provided smartphones and tablets on enterprise networks. Through these services, Unisys helps clients create and implement corporate governance policies for mobile devices; create procedures for securing corporate data such as remote device tracking, device locking and data wiping; establish an enterprise application store to manage corporate mobile apps; deliver break/fix field support services; and provide a service desk that gives mobile end users a single point of contact to quickly resolve service issues including remote device support. The Unisys MDM offerings cover mobile platforms such as Apple iPhones and iPads, Google Android-based devices, BlackBerrys and Windows Mobile devices.
  • End-User Experience Monitoring. Using predictive analytics tools, this service monitors application, device and network performance to proactively look for issues that affect end-user productivity. IT support teams can then rapidly identify the root cause of an impending service event – such as slow application response due to a smartphone’s sudden switch from a 4G to a 3G network – and fix the issue or alert the end user before they even notice.
  • Support for Intel® Anti-Theft Technology (Intel® AT). Mobile device loss and theft can cost even a single organization more than $6 million a year. To help clients safeguard business assets, Unisys is partnering with Intel to support laptops and Ultrabook devices that include Intel AT. An Intel AT-enabled laptop or device can be “bricked” (disabled) automatically or remotely with the help of Unisys service desk professionals when necessary and restored to its original state if the authorized user finds it again. This support complements Unisys’ extensive security solution offerings.

“Protecting computing assets and confidential data is a huge challenge for CIOs and CISOs,” said Anand Pashupathy, general manager of Intel’s Anti-Theft Technology business unit. ”Intel® Anti-Thef t Technology’s device and data protection technology gives those executives peace of mind by addressing the challenge head-on. Intel is excited that Unisys, with its strength in enterprise IT services, is making support for Intel® Anti-Theft Technology capabilities part of Unisys Mobility Solutions.”

He also announced updates to the company’s developer tools and availability of the next release of Windows Intune, the company’s cloud-based solution for PC and mobile device management and security.

Built on decades of experience gleaned from running massive datacenters at scale, Windows Server 2012 is the cloud-optimized server OS for customers of all sizes, and Windows Azure, updated with new services and features, delivers both infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service capabilities. Built to complement each other with consistent development, management and identity, they make it easier to create, migrate, deploy and manage applications across public, private and hybrid clouds.

“The operating system does two things: it looks after the hardware, and it provides a platform for applications. The modern datacenter and modern apps put more pressure than ever on infrastructure to become truly cloud-optimized, and that’s where Microsoft builds on our legacy with the OS to help our customers,” Nadella said. “Microsoft is your partner in the transformation of IT because only Microsoft offers the modern, yet familiar, platform that enables you to connect with the cloud on your terms.”

Connecting With the Cloud

Every customer’s path to the cloud will be unique, which is why Microsoft Corp. is optimizing its technologies and tools so customers can easily connect to public, private or hybrid clouds when they are ready. Customers, such as Aflac Inc., ING Direct and Tribune Co., are already working with Microsoft to expand their datacenters into the cloud to scale on demand and help reduce infrastructure costs.

“Delivering content to thousands of users across multiple devices and platforms requires a level of infrastructure that’s easier to manage and more affordable with the cloud,” said Denise Schuster, senior vice president of Digital Innovations for Tribune Company. “We are currently using various methods to deliver content via cloud services, and we’re moving our digital content to Windows Azure to help us find new ways to better deliver a targeted, more personalized experience for our customer base.”

To ease customers’ transitions to the cloud, Microsoft underscored the release candidate of Windows Server 2012, recent updates to Windows Azure and the release of Windows Intune. Together, these new releases make it even easier for customers to leverage one modern operating system across public, private and hybrid clouds and manage a multitude of devices connected to those clouds.

• Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate (RC). Released May 31, 2012, the Windows Server 2012 RC is available for customers to download and evaluate today. Advancements in storage, networking and scalability have been drawn from Microsoft’s experience running public cloud services.

• Windows Azure. Windows Azure is newly updated with preview support for Virtual Machine and Virtual Network, support for Windows and Linux images, and additional support for Java and Python.

• Windows Intune. The next release of Windows Intune, now available at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windowsintune/pc-management.aspx, includes expanded management and security benefits through mobile device management and adds people-centric management capabilities and upgrade rights to the latest version of Windows.

Enabling Developers With Cloud Tools

To streamline and accelerate application development and deployment, Microsoft Team Foundation Service, an application lifecycle management tool hosted on Windows Azure, is now even easier for teams to integrate into their development process. Team Foundation Service features collaboration tools, a code repository, and powerful reporting and traceability tools to help teams more effectively manage software development. Beginning today, a public preview of Team Foundation Service is available at http://tfspreview.com.

To help developers and IT professionals build immersive experiences that scale across devices and the cloud, the company announced that Microsoft LightSwitch, an easy-to-use development tool for quickly building applications, will now render HTML5. Integrating HTML5 into LightSwitch will enable developers using the tool to target any device or platform supporting HTML5.

Managed Third-Party SIEM Services for Improved ROI

The service will be delivered based on local delivery or a “follow-the-sun” model for addressing the needs of customers globally and providing improved customer flexibility. Customers will have the option of Dell SecureWorks handling both the management and monitoring of the SIEM platform, or monitoring only. Customers can also decide to maintain the SIEM data at their location.

CA Technologies Survey Reveals More Than Fifty Percent of Businesses Choose Private Cloud

CA Technologies Survey Reveals More Than Fifty Percent of Businesses Choose Private Cloud

Results Point to High Growth for North American Cloud Service Providers

ISLANDIA, N.Y., June 11, 2012 – According to a new survey of North American cloud service providers (CSPs) unveiled today by CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA), more than half reported that their customers are opting for the private cloud services model, while 32 percent are choosing public cloud services. Moreover, these CSPs expect to grow their businesses by 30 percent in 2012.

The IT management software and solutions company surveyed CSPs and discovered respondents were upbeat about their performance and planned to continue investing in additional resources to increase business throughout the remainder of the year.

Although the cloud market is still considered to be fairly nascent, the average survey respondent has been delivering cloud services since 2009, with 22 percent reporting having offered cloud-based services before then. Nearly 25 percent indicate they had been “extremely successful” in their cloud services activities—having met or exceeded their goals—while another 35 percent noted they had been “moderately successful” in their efforts.

Respondents also offer a diverse set of services cutting across Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, Software as a Service (SaaS), virtual private data centers and other services, with the highest percentage (two-thirds of respondents) indicating they sell SaaS solutions.

“Cloud service providers are critical players in the cloud computing ecosystem and important drivers in this new cloud economy,” said Adam Famularo, senior vice president, Cloud Solutions and Service Providers, CA Technologies. “Third party providers come from a range of backgrounds – managed services, software development, value-added resellers, even IT consulting and technology outsourcing – and they’re leveraging the cloud to transform their businesses and those of their end customers.”

The survey also explored challenges and areas of investment for CSPs. Not surprisingly, nearly fifty percent cited dealing with their customers’ security concerns as the top challenge. Issues around billing strategies (39 percent) and ensuring customer satisfaction (27 percent) were the next largest concerns, while issues like ensuring regulatory compliance (17 percent) and managing data center capital costs (12 percent) appeared much lower on the list.

In terms of their 2012 investments to grow cloud revenue, 55 percent of the respondents indicated they intend to increase their marketing activities, while 46 percent planned to create new cloud services to expand their existing offerings. Thirty-one percent will make investments to specialize in vertical markets. These areas of investment suggest that CSPs have recognized the need to differentiate their services in a highly competitive marketplace, and to increase awareness to drive new customer wins.

“The survey results mirror many of the conversations we’ve had with our service provider partners,” continued Famularo. “They are expanding from their earlier roots and finding competitive advantage through delivery of new cloud-based services, and they are looking to see significant growth this year through efforts like vertical specialization and ramped up marketing initiatives. It’s a fast-paced market with a lot of opportunity, and we’re eager to work with our partners to achieve our mutual goal: to help companies accelerate, transform and secure IT.”

About the Survey

The survey was conducted in March 2012 of registered users of SearchCloudComputing.com and generated 121 responses from a representative cross-section of cloud service providers in North America.
