Intel Previews 1Gbps DOCSIS* 3.0 Gateway Capability at The Cable Show

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Intel previews 1 gigabit per second DOCSIS 3.0 capability in its latest gateway solution, the Intel® Puma™ 6.
  • Next-generation Intel® Puma™ gateway allows service providers to extend their investments in current network infrastructure.
  • South Korea’s SKbroadband targeting deployment of 1Gbps network in 2013.

THE CABLE SHOW, Boston, May 21, 2012 – Intel Corporation today previewed its first DOCSIS* 3.0 cable gateway solution that is capable of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps). The Intel® Puma™ 6 technology solution will help enable service providers to meet consumer demand and offer new services while extending their extensive network investments. A test program by South Korea’s SKbroadband is targeting production deployment of 1Gbps in 2013.

As the number of Internet-connected devices in the home grows, service providers are challenged to provide higher broadband speeds to more customers utilizing an existing cable network. A service provider’s ability to scale up to this high level of bandwidth will help enable new high-bandwidth experiences for what the industry calls “TV Everywhere,” an immersive blend of Internet, television, gaming and applications across multiple screens throughout the home.

With the advanced technology of the DOCSIS 3.0 specification, multiple system operators (MSOs) can offer more users faster access to bandwidth-intensive experiences such as streaming video or online gaming using their existing network infrastructure and DOCSIS 3.0 equipment. Due to the flexibility of this technology, the Intel Puma 6 achieves the 1Gbps downstream speeds by bonding up to 24 DOCSIS channels (up from eight bonded channels in a typical deployment today). Intel Puma 6 has an upload speed that is double current-generation DOCSIS modems. With up to 240Mps upstream (eight bonded channels), more consumers will benefit from new services that include video conferencing, cloud storage and easy sharing.

“We continue to lead in DOCSIS technology, and are now providing cable gateway solutions with 1Gbps capability,” said Alan Crouch, general manager of Intel’s Service Provider Division. “Service providers can now deliver on consumer demands for higher broadband speeds, supporting a proliferation of new devices, services and experiences.”

The Intel Puma family system architecture provides OEMs with flexibility to easily customize their products to fit a wide range of MSO-required and optional features such as high data rates, wireless communications, power down modes and telephone support. Intel was the first to deploy DOCSIS 3.0 technology with Intel® Puma™ 5, and over 20 million DOCSIS 3.0 systems have shipped.

“SKbroadband is proud to lead the world in piloting a 1 gigabit Internet experience,” said Dae Chul Noh, team leader of SKbroadband’s Network Division. “Our customers use these lightning-fast Internet speeds for high-definition TV, multi-player gaming, video conferencing and more.”

IBM CEO study - Ever wonder what keeps the CEO up at night?

IBM CEO Study: Command & Control Meets Collaboration

CEOs embark on a new era of leadership as they embrace a more connected culture

ARMONK, NY, - 22 May 2012: A new IBM (NYSE: IBM) study of more than 1,700 Chief Executive Officers from 64 countries and 18 industries worldwide reveals that CEOs are changing the nature of work by adding a powerful dose of openness, transparency and employee empowerment to the command-and-control ethos that has characterized the modern corporation for more than a century.

The advantages of the fast-moving trend are clear. According to the IBM CEO study, companies that outperform their peers are 30 percent more likely to identify openness – often characterized by a greater use of social media as a key enabler of collaboration and innovation – as a key influence on their organization.  Outperformers are embracing new models of working that tap into the collective intelligence of an organization and its networks to devise new ideas and solutions for increased profitability and growth.

To forge closer connections with customers, partners and a new generation of employees in the future, CEOs will shift their focus from using e-mail and the phone as primary communication vehicles to using social networks as a new path for direct engagement. Today, only 16 percent of CEOs are using social business platforms to connect with customers, but that number is poised to spike to 57 percent within the next three to five years. While social media is the least utilized of all customer interaction methods today, it stands to become the number two organizational engagement method within the next five years, a close second to face-to-face interactions.

Coming after decades of top-down control, the shift has substantial ramifications – not just for the CEOs themselves – but for their organizations, managers, and employees, as well as for universities and business schools, and information technology suppliers. IBM’s research finds that technology is viewed as a powerful tool to recast organizational structures. More than half of CEOs (53 percent) are planning to use technology to facilitate greater partnering and collaboration with outside organizations, while 52 percent are shifting their attention to promoting great internal collaboration.

“One of the most compelling findings is how in tune CEOs are about the implications and impact of social media,” said Bridget van Kralingen, senior vice president, IBM Global Business Services. “Rather than repeating the familiar lament about de-personalizing human relationships, this view leans heavily in favor of deepening them, and using dynamic social networks to harness collective intelligence to unlock new models of collaboration.”

Greater openness is not without risks. Openness increases vulnerability. The Internet – especially through social networks – can provide a worldwide stage to any employee interaction, positive or negative. For organizations to operate effectively in this environment, employees must internalize and embody the organizations values and mission.  Thus, organizations must equip employees with a set of guiding principles that they can use to empower everyday decision making. Championing collaborative innovation is not something CEOs are delegating to their HR leaders. According to the study findings, the business executives are interested in leading by example.

By the numbers

CEOs regard interpersonal skills of collaboration (75 percent), communication (67 percent), creativity (61 percent) and flexibility (61 percent) as key drivers of employee success to operate in a more complex, interconnected environment.

To build its next-generation workforce, organizations have to actively recruit and hire employees who excel at working in open, team-based environments.  At the same time, leaders must build and support practices to help employees thrive, such as encouraging the development of unconventional teams, promoting experiential learning techniques and empowering the use of high-value employee networks.

The trend toward greater collaboration extends beyond the corporation to external partnering relationships. Partnering is now at an all-time high. In 2008, slightly more than half of the CEOs IBM interviewed planned to partner extensively. Now, more than two-thirds intend to do so.

“Innovating together with your partners is a win-win for both,” Peter Voser, Chief Executive Officer, Royal Dutch Shell plc says. “At Shell, we not only deal with energy, we also need to focus on challenges such as water and food as they’re all interlinked. That’s why driving innovation together, also across industries, is extremely important.”

Other findings

The IBM study found that a majority (71 percent) of global CEOs regard technology as the number one factor to impact an organization’s future over the next three years – considered to be a bigger change agent than shifting economic and market conditions.

Across all aspects of their organization – from financials to competitors to operations – CEOs are most focused on gaining deeper insights about their customers. Seven out of every ten CEOs are making significant investments in their organizations’ ability to draw meaningful customer insights from available data.

Given the data explosion most organizations are facing, CEOs recognize the need for more sophisticated business analytics to mine the data being tracked online, on mobile phones and social media sites. The traditional approach to understanding customers better has been to consolidate and analyze transactions and activities from across the entire organization. However, to remain relevant, CEOs must piece together a more holistic view of the customer based on how he or she engages the rest of the world, not just their organization.  The ability to drive value from data is strongly correlated with performance.  Outperforming organizations are twice as good as underperformers at accessing and drawing insights from data.  Outperformers are also 84 percent better at translating those insights into real action.

Gartner Says Program and Portfolio Management Leaders Must Embrace Change and Adapt to the "New Normal"

Gartner Says Program and Portfolio Management Leaders Must Embrace Change and Adapt to the "New Normal"

Analysts to Discuss the Future of PPM at Gartner PPM & IT Governance Summit 2012, June 19-20, in London

EGHAM, UK, May 22, 2012—

The pervasiveness of information and communication technology is driving intense levels of change, requiring business to adapt in ways that IT organizations are not currently structured to address effectively, according to Gartner, Inc. This dynamic is being felt most in IT-intensive functions and services where IT effectiveness is closely coupled with business success, and in industries where IT is the business. Program and portfolio management (PPM) leaders must tackle the changed environment directly.

"The level of uncertainty and change is at an all-time high. The force of this change and uncertainty on PPM leaders necessitates constant adjustment and realignment of organizational roles, capabilities and mind-sets to succeed within the continuously evolving 'new normal,'" said Robert Handler, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. "Constant innovation and change are required if organizations are to deliver the value required by stakeholders and sponsors."

Gartner has the following key predictions and advice for PPM leaders at this time of intense change:

By 2016, the leading 20 percent of organizations in IT-intensive businesses will plan change using integrated, near-real-time, IT portfolio analysis.

IT organizations will be under enhanced scrutiny to show the ability to execute the business strategy and the effect of IT investment decisions across all technology silos and the business. Consequently IT-intensive businesses will lead an emerging trend toward integrated, near-real-time, IT portfolio analysis as a way to bridge the gap between business needs for rapid and frequent change and the new IT products, services and technologies that can respond dynamically to those changes (including the cloud, on-demand services and virtualization).

The disciplines that will be impacted, such as IT portfolio management, project and program management, enterprise architecture, application delivery, IT service management and/or operations, and others, traditionally operate in silos at different tempos — as opposed to acting in concert as Gartner recommends. Leaders within IT will be required to make decisions faster, while understanding the broader impacts of those decisions across the IT value chain. The work gets restructured, the roles change and the tooling needs to be highly integrated — very unlike the world of today. As more businesses increase their reliance on IT, this trend will evolve into other industries. Those who adapt will attain or maintain market leadership; those who don't will falter.

By 2016, demand for agile project leaders — blending project and change management skills with domain expertise — will increase by 75 percent.

Project failure rates are high and the most prevalent root cause of project failure is an inability to deliver necessary functionality fast enough to capitalize on market opportunities. Transformational leadership and domain expertise must be tightly coupled with project management to thrive in the new normal.

The need for pure-play project managers will decline as project management skills alone will be insufficient to deliver successful change in turbulent environments. Project leaders will still require project management skills, but they will also require domain expertise and transformational leadership skills to be able to sense and respond to changing project environments and mobilize teams to adapt effectively. High-value project leadership will emerge within business areas, and employees will be required to learn project management as a secondary skill.

By 2015, 80 percent of IT organizations will reach resource breaking points, under intense pressure to deliver the right project resources just in time.

Driven by a need to deliver near-real-time change and a general inability to manage the resources required to deliver that change, organizations will be forced to alter how project resources are allocated and managed. While the exact forms of resource management innovation have yet to be determined, they will fall into one of two camps: incremental and dramatic.

Incremental innovation will build on existing best practices and include the use of strategic partners, coupled with mergers in spirit or fact between vendor management offices and project management offices, to enable near-real-time sourcing of skilled resources, with the requisite domain expertise to get the job done correctly. Dramatic innovation will be quite different from current models. While it is still early days, a probable scenario will be the use of an open-source model, whereby users self-select projects to work on, and project leaders approve these self-selected resources based on "reputonics," which is their reputation codified in social software profiles.

Additional information is in the report "Predicts 2012: PPM Leaders Must Embrace 'The Next Normal' by Embracing Changes and Adapting" which is available on Gartner's website at http://www.gartner.com/resId=1854714.

Gartner PPM & IT Governance Summit 2012

The Gartner PPM & IT Governance Summit 2012 will focus on balancing resources, demand and benefits amid a volatile economic environment. The Summit aims to help organizations improve how they select, implement, and manage IT projects and investments. Gartner analysts will provide advice on how to master tactics that deliver reliably, how to maintain a lean and agile organization, how to gain an accurate view of all the different projects' strategic values, and how to ensure that benefits are realized.

In addition, utilizing the new Xeon Processor E3-1200 v2 Product Family
in the px12-450r is ideal for supporting customers’ needs to process
more information directly on the storage device.”

Anatomy of the new Iomega StorCenter px12-450r Network Storage Array

The heart of the new StorCenter px12-450r is the new low-power Intel
Xeon Processor E3-1200 v2, coupled with 8GB memory. The multicore
processor ex
cels at multi-threaded storage workloads like multi-LUN
iSCSI and multi-client virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). The 8GB
memory assists those workloads and easily supports memory-intensive
tasks like the Avamar source-based deduplicating agent, included with
all Iomega StorCenter PX series storage products.

The new StorCenter px12-450r is a ground-up redesign of Iomega’s
previous top-of-the-line model, the StorCenter px12-350r. The StorCenter
px12-450r is available in diskless and partially populated
configurations, enabling users to start small in terms of storage
capacity, or provide their own HDDs and grow as workloads and storage
capacity dictate. The px12-450r is qualified with a broad range of 1TB,
2TB and 3TB consumer and Server Class Series HDDs, as well as upcoming
4TB HDDs. All product configurations and expansion drives for the
px12-450r available from Iomega include Server Class Series ATA drives
for the highest reliability.

The new px12-450r also supports solid state drives (SSDs), ideal for
large amounts of small block random I/O workloads such as virtualization
and database. The px12-450r expands on the px12-350r’s user
serviceability with a new mechanical design that makes the processor
complex user-replaceable by removing just two thumbscrews. All product
configurations include disk drive trays to simplify capacity
expansion-users just add HDDs.

One of the key advantages of adopting leading-edge technology like the
new Intel Xeon Processor is that the StorCenter px12-450r can handle
advanced workloads to increase the lifespan of the network storage array
for end users. The multicore processor and 8GB memory are ready for the
next generation of storage-based applications. The px12-450r includes 2
PCIe slots to further expand the px12-450r’s capabilities,
particularly by adding I/O connectivity, like 10GbE when it becomes
mainstream. Finally, the px12-450r is ready to support 4TB HDDs,
expected in wide availability by the end of this year.

Software Enhancements

The StorCenter px12-450r features two software enhancements that are
well matched to its leading-edge hardware complex. The px12-450r is the
industry’s only sub $10K storage array to run the McAfee VirusScan
Enterprise product natively on the storage. Also the px12-450r can run
Linux applications created with Iomega’s LifeLine Software Development
Kit (SDK).

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise is an enterprise-class endpoint security
product which runs natively on the px12-450r, no external server
required. Enterprise-class threat scanning means 1) threat
identification and remediation through McAfee’s global network and

U of S Team Wins Award of Innovation for iUSask Mobile App

U of S Team Wins Award of Innovation for iUSask Mobile App

Released: 5/18/2012 6:00 AM EDT
Source: University of Saskatchewan

Newswise — A team of University of Saskatchewan computer scientists has been awarded the 2012 Award of Innovation for creating an iPhone application (app) – the first in Canada to offer university students broader, exceptionally secure access to confidential information such as grades.

Chad Jones and Eric Neufeld led the team of U of S developers that created the iUSask app to enhance the student life experience and provide general university information. The project became the foundation of CollegeMobile (www.collegemobile.com), a company that creates both educational and business apps for smartphones and tablet computers.

“The development of a single iPhone app at the U of S has led to the creation of a leading firm in developing customized mobile applications across computing platforms and business lines,” said Glen Schuler, managing director of the U of S Industry Liaison Office (ILO).

Co-sponsored by Innovation Place and the ILO, the Award of Innovation honours U of S researchers who have brought new and commercially viable technology to the ILO for development into marketable products. The winners were announced at the SABEX “Celebrate Success!” gala in Saskatoon on May 17th.

“Sponsoring this award is another example of how Innovation Place supports the growth of Saskatchewan’s technology sector,” said Austin Beggs, Innovation Place vice-president of corporate relations.

Founded in 2009, CollegeMobile has grown rapidly to meet demand for mobile applications. The company sets itself apart from competitors by programming for multiple mobile platforms and using complex security software to protect app users’ information.

A number of the company’s developers are U of S graduates who took Jones’ smartphone programming course. The company also employs graduates from the Edwards School of Business at the U of S.

Two other nominations were considered for this year’s Award of Innovation:

Rajendra Sharma and Anuraag Shrivastav of the U of S department of pathology have identified a marker present in the blood and bone marrow of patients with colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer diagnosed in Canada. This marker can be detected at all tumor stages, which will allow for early detection and a greater chance of survival for patients. Colorectal cancer is curable, but current methods for detection are invasive and costly. This discovery has potential to be developed into a simplified, cost-effective and accurate way to diagnose colorectal cancer.

With an international reputation in the area of plant development and hybrid seed production, U of S biology professor Vipen Sawhney has been conducting research on male sterility in tomatoes for over 30 years and developed the first commercially viable, male-sterile line of tomatoes. The line significantly reduces the cost of hybrid tomato seed production by eliminating the labour-intensive process of hand removal of the male part (stamen) of tomato flowers, ensuring a 100 per cent hybrid seed yield. The line has now been licensed to seed companies in Italy, India, and Holland.

The Award of Innovation is open to U of S employees and students. Selection criteria include innovation novelty and potential commercial impact. The selection committee includes representatives from Innovation Place and the U of S.

Innovation Place is one of North America's most successful university-related technology parks. For more information on Innovation Place, visit www.innovationplace.com.

The ILO works with inventors to help commercialize innovations developed at the U of S. For more information on the ILO, visit www.usask.ca/ilo.

Montreal's FixMeStick Launches First Ever Consumer-Ready USB Device for Removing Computer Viruses

FixMeStick Launches First Ever Consumer-Ready USB Device for Removing Computer Viruses

Partnership with 3 anti-virus leaders and a separate operating system means anyone can clean infections like the pros for a fraction of the price

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - May 9, 2012) -

Editors' note: A photo and a video are associated with this press release.

Computer viruses should be scared. Today, Montreal-based start-up, FixMeStick, has launched the first ever, consumer-ready USB device for removing viruses from infected PCs.

What makes this product unique?

The principles of the FixMeStick are not new to security IT professionals: multiple anti-virus engines increase the number of detectable viruses, and clean external scanning devices prevent viruses from hiding or from interfering with their removal. But, for the first time, FixMeStick has built these principles into a ready-to-go USB device that enables everyday users to do what the pros do (watch the FixMeStick remove the ZeroAccess rootkit that is blocking and hiding from desktop anti-virus software).

"This is about enabling everyone to rid their machines of malware," says co-founder Marty Algire. "And it will help people continue to enjoy their computers and the Internet."

The FixMeStick costs $49.99 for an unlimited number of uses on three PCs per year. Renewals can be purchased for $24.99 annually.

Co-founder Corey Velan explains, "The FixMeStick enables anyone to use the biggest advantage they have over Internet thieves: physical access to the PC. This way, PC owners can use the FixMeStick, a safe external device, to remove infections."

The FixMeStick is powered by three of the biggest names in anti-virus software: Kaspersky Lab, Sophos, and GFI.

"The FixMeStick is an innovative solution that delivers great value to consumers," notes Julian Waits VP, Strategic Relationships at GFI Software.

"This collaboration will allow organizations and their users to significantly minimize the impact of a malware infection," stresses Michael Rogers, Vice President, Global Alliances & OEM at Sophos.

And Stephen Le Hir, VP Global Business Development at Kaspersky Lab, says, "It's always a pleasure to see an innovative product, such as FixMeStick, emerge on the market. I am sure this innovation, boosted by Kaspersky Lab's anti-malware expertise, will help protect and cure millions of computers."

For more information, to request a sample FixMeStick to review, or to book an interview, please contact Jackson Wightman at Jackson.Wightman@fixmestick.com or (514) 605 9255.

About FixMeStick

Headquartered in Montreal, FixMeStick is a private company, founded by two IT security veterans, Marty Algire and Corey Velan. The company's namesake product is a Linux-based device that runs before Windows boots, enabling it to clean the PC while malware is inactive. It contains three leading anti-virus engines: Kaspersky, Sophos, and GFI's VIPRE, integrated behind a single full-screen application. The FixMeStick is set up and ready to go right out of the box. No additional installation is required and automatic updates are stored directly on the device. The FixMeStick is easy to support and any quarantine operation is 100% reversible. The FixMeStick works on any PC with a minimum of 512 MB of RAM.

Calgary IT Consulting Team Saves Downtown Oil & Gas Firm From a Computer Cowboy

Calgary IT Consulting Team Saves Downtown Oil & Gas Firm From a Computer Cowboy

Submitted by ulistic on May 17, 2012

Calgary is known for its cowboy tradition, but what happens to your business IT systems when they’re managed by a computer cowboy? Business IT systems must be left to the professionals as one Calgary small business learned the hard way before calling in the cavalry from CTECH to fix things up.

Calgary IT Consulting

CTECH is well-known across Calgary for its commitment to helping the vibrant oil and gas sector with professional IT support services as well as its 90-second help desk guarantee. Commitment to excellence makes CTECH stand out from the crowd.

Having a rock solid reputation in the Calgary energy community provides CTECH with a constant stream of junior oil and gas firms looking for a trustworthy resource for their IT support. This was the case when one of our clients referred us to a peer.

“We live the Go Giver model,” said CTECH President Carl Fransen. “We never bad mouth a competitor. Our competitors have reasons for the way they do things, even if it doesn’t follow many of the best practices CTECH believes in”.

Our new client purchased a secondhand IBM server from an IT firm in Calgary. Originally, this IBM server cost $10,000, and the second-hand price of $5,000 seemed like a great deal. However, when CTECH’s team of support engineers started to peel back the skin of the onion, this “great deal” made the business owner cry.

Purchases with no warranty coverage, failing hard drives and a list of components that had seen better days, this once great deal ended up costing this Calgary oil and gas environmental firm more than if the executives had invested in the right solution from day one.

After meeting with the decision makers, CTECH came up with a DELL solution that cost less than what had been spent on the secondhand server. The Dell solution would provide four times the power of the IBM server it replaced and everything else that our client required. They now enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that the DELL server solution has a 4-hour service guarantee. Regardless of what time of day or night service is needed, someone will have the issue resolved in four hours or less.

CTECH went above and beyond the call of duty by providing a wider range of services than its predecessor. Our client now has the right security on its network, ensuring that those with the need-to-know can access corporate records on the network; staff can work remotely when required; collaboration and sharing is enhanced, and all team members can share calendars, contacts, and information when necessary.

Our client also enjoys a corporate Intranet service that facilitates the management of compliance updates and business documents.

What we learned from this experience is how important it is to have IT support from a company that understands the needs of the Calgary oil and gas industry, knows how to design solutions that meet the budgets of Calgary businesses and can provide them with live help desk professionals around the clock.

CTECH provides this level of service for all clients in the Calgary region. We specialize in hotels and oil and gas; however, if you are relying on a “Computer Cowboy” for your IT, you may want to call us for a second opinion.
